Crossover With Non-anime Series Fan Fiction ❯ Terdwilicker's Anime Reviews ❯ Louie The Rune Soldier ( Chapter 2 )
In the beginning there was D&D, Dungeons and Dragons, the game version of Lord Of the Rings with the serial numbers filed off for copyright reasons. Then TSR published campaigns, including Forgotten Realms, which got translated into a number of languages, including Japanese. Fans of that expansion used the setting to write a manga called Record of Lodoss War, where busty Elf Maiden was first invented as a character archetype. Some might argue that an american comic book was actually first, but moving on...
Lodoss inspired a parody, called Slayers. Slayers is about Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev. Every short overpowered sorceress with small boobs is literally based on Lina. Slayers ran for multiple years, stopped, came back for movies and OVAs, stopped, came back again for a new series called Revolution and got more OVAs out of that, probably. I personally think they ran that into the ground by season 3 back in the 90's. Slayers is also the reason that long ENGLISH language incantations are used for magic in all Japanese anime. It is because she did, because of Lodoss and Forgotten Realmns origins in America. This also lead to special attacks in all shounen anime being English is a direct reference to Forgotten Realms and Lina, even when those attacks are in mecha anime. There is a lot more cultural sharing between Japan and the USA than either side likes to admit.
Slayers got parodied by Louie the Rune Soldier. Louie is a parody of a parody of a ripoff of American D&D. Louie uses all the tropes from Lodoss and Lina, turns them sideways and mocks them. It is very well done, and the English voice acting is excellent. It does not get used much in fan fiction because people are satisfied with the story and ending, so the usual outrage that drives fiction is missing. It is just good, as it is. There are still anime being done today which reference Louie. Konosuba is a squinty-eyes remake of it, with Megumin being Lina. She even has an explosion magic that duplicates the Dragon Slave from Slayers.
Highly recommended watching for Louie. Just remember it is a comedy and never gets serious.
