Chapter Five- Beginning of the End
Ryan was silent as he watched -from his seat in the Hummer- Horatio and the others process his home. He was still in a state of denial about what happened to Jay. How could anyone get in? He knew he set his alarm system and locked all the doors and windows before going to bed. He paled even more when another possibility ran through his head. `Maybe I did it in my sleep.' He shivered, pulling his jacket closer. He and his mother had a bad case of OCD, but he never heard of anyone having any sleep disorders in his family, and Jay never told him anything about him doing anything in his sleep except for lightly snore, and talk in his sleep. Ryan tried to think of anyone who knew Jay was staying at his place. His boss knew he was talking a week of to give his ankle a break, but that was about it. The only other person he could think of was-
“Ryan!” Ryan was startled out of his thoughts. He looked up to see Horatio's concerned eyes watching him. “Are you okay?”
Ryan rubbed his throat. He had screamed it raw when he awoke to find Jay's blood everywhere. He took the pan and pad of paper Tripp had given him and wrote, `I woke up to find my boyfriend's blood all over me. Frankly the shock hasn't quite settled in yet.'
Horatio nodded. “Are you up for questions?”
`No point in delaying the inevitable.'
“What did you two do last night?”
Ryan flipped to a new page and started writing away on it. `Jay was doing work on his laptop while I made dinner. After dinner, he finished his work while I did dishes. I helped him take a shower (since his ankle was broken) then he took his pain killers and I used my cream to sooth my throat muscles. I helped him get comfortable before also going to bed. Around 2am, I woke up with a migraine and a dry throat so I went into the kitchen to get a glass of water and something for my head. I came back and drifted back to sleep. Then, when I woke up this morning, I found a knife in his chest and blood everywhere.' Ryan handed him the note pad before looking passed Horatio's shoulder to his house.
Horatio was about to say something when Eric walked up. “Hey Wolfe, do you have, uh, keys to that door in the kitchen?”
Horatio handed Ryan the note pad back. `Yeah.'
“Well, can I have them?”
Ryan looked away. `No.'
“Ryan, you aren't really in any position to be-” Horatio started to say, but was cut off at the insistent waving of Ryan's hand.
`Horatio, I have locks on that door for a reason and there shouldn't be any reason for you guys to go down there.' Ryan wrote, his eyes pleading for the red head to understand. `Besides, whoever did this couldn't have gotten into the basement without breaking the door down.'
“Ryan, your house is our crime scene, you don't have a say as to where we can or can't go. Moreover, people are going to start wondering if you have something to hide,” Horatio said gently.
Ryan sighed in defeat. `They're in the glove box of my car.' He motioned towards the garage. `Can someone take me to the lab so I can get some clothes on?'
Horatio nodded. “Frank will take you.”

“Hey Alexx,” Calleigh said, setting her kit down. “How bad is it?”
“Judging by the way those cuts were made, the killer was quick, but obviously messy,” Alexx said, moving Jay's head back so they could get a clear view of his bloody throat. “The killer sliced his neck twice before repeatedly stabbing him in the chest.”
“So, do you think the cause of death was exsanguination?” Calleigh asked, pulling gloves on.
“Probably, I'll know more back at the post.” Alexx stood. “What I find interesting is he doesn't look like he moved at all to defend himself.”
“He was more than likely attacked in his sleep,” Calleigh said. “Looking at the cast on his leg he might have been taking something that had a side effect to make him really drowsy.”
“Guess so.” Alexx looked Jay over. “So this is the guy Ryan was with,” she muttered coldly.
“Alexx, we don't know for sure if this is the same guy who gave Ryan those bruises,” Calleigh said softly, looking at her friend.
“Honey, this guy is twice Ryan's size,” Alexx countered.
“Still- hey, what's that on his left hand?” Calleigh pointed. Alexx frowned and held his hand up.
“This is getting way too confusing,” she said.
“Ryan's sleeping with a married man?” Calleigh said in disbelief.

Eric carefully dusted the door handle before lifting fingerprints that were probably Ryan's. He was just unlocking the first of six locks when Calleigh walked over to him. “Get anything usable?” She asked.
“Yeah, but they're more than likely Wolfe's or that guy he was with,” Eric said. “What about you?”
“Other than fingerprints everywhere I found what looks like mucus just above the headboard.”
“It night be our killer's because I can't see Wolfe leaving something like that un-cleaned,” Eric said.
“And our victim was a cheater,” Calleigh said.
Eric glanced at her before unlock the fifth lock. “How do you know?”
“He was married,” the Southern girl replied.
“That could be motive,” Horatio said from behind them.
“What do you suppose Wolfe was hidden to need so many damn locks?” Calleigh asked.
“Who knows.” Eric said, unlocking the last one. “Though he definitely wasn't willing to hand over these keys.” The Cuban grabbed his kit before opening the door.
Horatio suddenly stopped them from going down. “Hold on, do you smell that?”
“Is that decomp?” Calleigh said, pressing her arm to her nose.
Eric paused to get his flashlight. Flicking it on, he looked for a light switch before proceeding. “I think we know why Ryan had those locks on his door.”
Calleigh's eyes widened when she saw the body lying there. “This is not good.”
