Chapter One: Unrequited

“I'm so excited!” squealed a girl with long brown hair tied partially back in a pink ribbon. “We finally made it to Tokyo!”

“Calm down, Risa,” chided her older twin, Harada Riku, with brown hair cropped to her chin, the only visible difference between her and Risa. “It's just another class trip and it's not like we haven't been here before! Am I right, Daisuke?”

A boy, no older than fifteen, grinned with embarrassment all over his face. The red-headed teen with matching eyes didn't want to envoke either of the Harada twins' anger. Truth was this was his first time to Tokyo, like many other of the students that came along, so he was just as excited as Risa. Their class had decided to go on a week long trip to Tokyo as their annual class trip. He'd get to spend time with both the Haradas as well as the rest of his classmates as they got to explore their nation's capitol. Daisuke Niwa was also excited at the idea he wouldn't have to steal for this entire week.

He grabbed his room key from the check-in receptionist and laughed nervously. “Well, I understand Risa's excitement since this is my first time here, Riku. But then again, if I wasn't able to contain it and I was bothering others, that's not okay.”

Way to not pick sides there, partner. A voice teased in the back of Daisuke's head.

Dark? When did you wake up? The teen asked the thief.

Just a few minutes ago. Surprised?
Well, you've been sleeping a lot recently. So, I guess I am… He said, heading up the stairs to his assigned room to unpack before heading off with some friends to explore some of Tokyo's shrines.

Tch… You're the one who rarely transforms into me anymore. It's like I am the one who has to force it out of you, even when you're with your girlfriend.

Daisuke blushed. He'd forgotten that he hadn't been reacting to Riku or Risa that much anymore. It wasn't that he didn't have any feelings of unrequited love, because they were there, just not like they used to be. The red-head really didn't know why it was happening.

Thinking of her, are we? What is it? Did she tell you she loved you?

Setting his bag on the bed and unpacking, Daisuke's blush deepened. We are fine! And no she didn't tell me that! If she had, you wouldn't be here, now would you, Dark?

Dark was quiet for a few minutes as his tamer finished putting away his clothes. When are you going to tell her? The sooner you do I'll be able to leave you alone…

“Dark…” the teen spoke quietly, almost sad. “Is that? … Do you…”

“You shouldn't talk to yourself, Niwa,” and emotionless voice said from the doorway. “People might get ideas, you calling out the Phantom Thief's name…”

“S-satoshi!” Daisuke squeaked, his face as red as his hair. “What are you doing here? I thought Takeshi and I were rooming together!”

The blue-eyed and haired boy smirked. “You thought wrong. I was assigned to this room. Is there a problem with that?”

Well, yeah there is! You creepy commander! Doesn't he remember that he lost our bet!? Dark yelled inside of Daisuke, making the boy cringe.

What's your problem, Dark? He asked, remembering that the thief and other tamer made a bet. Hiwatari lost and hence couldn't touch Daisuke. What do you think he's going to do to me? Jealous?

The thief made a snorting noise. Forget I said anything.

Daisuke laughed nervously. “Well, of course I don't have a problem with it, Satoshi, but are you?”

Blue eyes met red. The Hikari raised an eyebrow. “Everything is under control, Daisuke. Why? Planning on going out tonight?”

What a fag… Dark snorted. He knows that no note was sent out!

Dark! Shut up! The younger tamer yelled at his other half. He then waved his hands in front of his face as he answered Satoshi. “N-no! Of course not! This is a vacation, Satoshi!”

The other teen laughed slightly, pushing up his glasses from the end of his nose. “I meant with the younger Harada-san.”

“Well…” Daisuke laughed nervously out of embarrassment.

Before he could finish, a boy sprinted into the room and held Daisuke in a head-lock. The boy had dark hair and messy brown hair. A clumsy, but sly grin spread wide across his face, making Satoshi frown and Daisuke worried. “Of course he is! We're going to go to the Higurashi Shrine! Do you wanna' come, Hiwatari?”

“I'll pass,” the police chief said coldly.

“Fine!” The boy stuck out his tongue. “C'mon, Niwa! We're going to be late for the Haradas!”

“Takeshi!” Daisuke yelped as Takeshi drug the boy out of the room, still in that headlock.

Dark sat back in his corner of Daisuke's mind. Every time… Every time this conversation came up his tamer's sentence would be interrupted. The thief wanted to know badly what the teen wanted him to hear. At first, it didn't bother the three-hundred-year-old spirit. After all, he could just pry into Dai's thoughts later to find out what he wanted to know.

Just like Murphy's Law states, things never go as planned. Daisuke long ago learned how to keep his most personal thoughts from Dark. When Dark went in search of what Daisuke wanted to say, he found himself unable to pass Dai's mental barrier. That's what made it disturbing to him. Nothing that concerned himself was so close to his tamer's heart. At least, he thought, nothing that the Niwa had kept from the phantom thief; so this was very new to him. Of all the Niwa's he'd come to know over the years, Daisuke was certainly the closest one to him and the most different.

He never wanted Dark in the first place. Unlike his ancestors, who accepted the thief without hesitation or with enthusiasm, Dai wanted him to go away the very night they had met. The thief found the idea of rejection from his tamer very interesting. It was almost as interesting as the idea that a Niwa could do anything but steal. Daisuke not only had the thieving abilities of his forefathers, but he was the first Niwa to create.

In all reality, Daisuke hated to steal. Every time they went out thieving, Dark noted that the boy, though talented, didn't really have a heart for it. However, with every line or stroke of a paint brush, the boy's face lit up. He would spend hours just painting a sunset or a portrait. It reminded the spirit of what Hiwatari had told him about Daisuke; he had the ability to bring things to life.

Dark could only think that it was because his tamer was so full of life. The teen was always energetic and cheerful. He was always looking on the brighter side of things and Dark really did rely on him for it, not that he would ever admit it to the red-eyed boy. It hurt slightly to see that Dai wasn't acting like that anymore. In fact, it seemed to the thief the teen pulling away from him.

He was distancing himself from Dark. More and more things were being kept from the phantom thief. Dai was putting on more of a front with his smiles more than ever. He even started to busy himself with schoolwork and/or dates with the younger Harada. The teen barely ever got the urge to transformed, which also worried Dark. He wanted to know what exactly was bothering Daisuke Niwa. After watching from his spot in the teen's mind, he decided he was going to find out by the end of tonight, even if that meant invoking Dai's temper.

“What are you thinking about, Daisuke?” Riku asked as they four walked up the stairs.

“It's nothing,” Daisuke said, throwing on his trademark grin. “So… Where is this shrine keeper at?”

“Up there!” Takeshi shouted, running up the stairs.

“Niwa…” Riku said quietly.

Daisuke shook his head and held onto her hand. He then began his own sprint to catch up with his friend and the younger Harada twin. The light squeeze he gave Rike's hand made her blush and worry even more. Dai had been acting strange all day and she was already forming a plan to find out what he was keeping from everyone else.

This plan was set into motion as the old man, dressed in the traditional priest garb, began the tour by explaining the history of the shrine. It was home to the Jewel of Four Souls, but the girl could care less. By the time the old man was going on endlessly about some Sacred Tree while walking passed a well house, she was ready to get away for just a little while to talk to Niwa.

She grabbed onto her boyfriend's shirt and threw him, along with herself, into the well house while the man was babbling. The older Harada looked straight into the garnet eyes of Daisuke Niwa. “Care to tell me what your problem is?”

“Wh-what do you mean, Riku?” he grinned nervously.

“Don't give me that! You know what I mean! Did you not think I would notice your fake smiles? Why are you hiding what's bothering you from me? Can't you trust me?”

“Riku…” he said, looking away. Dark?

No answer came and Riku looked angry. “It's me, isn't it!?”

“No! It's not you!” Daisuke said calmly.

“Then tell me… How do you really feel about me? I need to know, Daisuke…”

His mind was panicking. Dark!? DARK! What do I do!?

Tell her Daisuke… Its time.

Daisuke sighed sadly at his other half's answer. “Riku… Before I can tell you that, there's something I need to confess. Then, will you decide how you feel about me?”

“What is it?” she asked, feeling a bit better.

“Riku…” he said, shaking. “I'm… I'm…”

“You're?”

“I'm sorry!” he said, tears welling up in his eyes. “I'm so sorry Riku! Please! It's not your fault, but I can't do this!”

He ran out of the well house and straight for the little wooded area behind it. He didn't need to be found by anyone at the moment. The red-head needed to sort things out to himself…

You idiot! That was your chance, Daisuke! Dark hissed. What the hell were you thinking?

Daisuke ignored the thief. He was trying to figure that out himself. While he knew why he didn't confess to Riku, he wanted to know why that was a problem now for him. The answer he came up with didn't sit well with him. Though he knew it was very true… He wasn't really in love with the Harada anymore. His Sacred Maiden was no longer the person he wanted. But how would Dark take that? He obviously wanted to be rid of Daisuke…

Dark was still trying to get a hold of his tamer's attention, but it was a good hour or two before the teen even got up from his spot. Something else was calling Dai. He was walking in the direction of the Sacred Tree. Immediately he slouched against it, the bark seemingly trying to soothe the boy's confused spirit. It was singing to him, calling. The lullaby was actually putting him to sleep, despite Dark's curses. Said thief had manifested so to only be visible to the teen.

He could see his amethyst eyes heated with anger and mixed with something else, but Dai's mind was going hazy. He murmured his response before fully nodding off. “You'd go away…”

Dark's expression immediately softened. Sighing, he knelt down in front of a sleeping Daisuke. The teen's breathing was calm and level and dark knew that the slight confession was sincere. It made his heart hurt a little but at the same same it was relieved. Reaching over to him, he brushed garnet strands out of his tamer's face. Why does it bother you, Dai-chan? It's the way things are… I'd rather vanish than to be like -

His train of thought was cut off by a shift in the dimension. Dark looked around, trying to find the source of the sudden shift. The tree! It was causing a tear in time. He and Daisuke were both being sucked into it. Turning to the teen, he tried to jar him awake. Daisuke! Daisuke! Wake up DAISUKE!

But it was too late…
