Chapter Six: Something Lost

Tuesday Night - Wednesday

Last time in “Garnet and Amethyst”…

“They took Daisuke, dammit! What the hell do you think I mean!?”

Inuyasha growled. “And just who the hell are you?”

Mirokou looked at the teen. “What happened here, Dark-san?”

PAGEBREAK

“D-Dark-san!?” Kagome squeaked.

The teen looked at the tachi. He couldn't believe what had just happened not more than five minutes previous. It had felt like and eternity, even if the events that had transpired here only lasted a minute. What was hurting the most was the fact he failed. He had failed to keep his tamer safe. Daisuke was gone and it was his entire fault. The kaitou couldn't even keep the person he treasured most close to him. Out of frustration his fist slammed into the ground. “Dammit…”

“Dark-san, if you would please tell us what happened here?” the monk prodded again.

Dark's violet eyes caught the dark ones of Mirokou. He inhaled to calm himself down before he could say anything. “Kagura knocked us out… You must've seen her carry us off, right?”

The monk nodded and Dark continued.

FLASHBACK

Dark awoke with a migraine that could kill. His entire body ached and felt as if it had been torn in half. His last thoughts were of Daisuke as he instantly remembered the red-head being ripped from his grasp. The kaitou called out to his tamer mentally, but no answer came. It was empty, blank. There was nothing. He was no longer connected to the Niwa boy. Dark was in a state of panic when he heard a weak voice sputter, “D-dark?”

His head shot around, catching a glimpse of read. The little hut that the kaitou had guess they were thrown in had collapsed. His tamer was trying to sit up amidst the debris. He picked himself up and stumbled next to Daisuke's side, ignoring the protests from his limbs. Dark held onto the boy. “You okay, Daisuke?”

“Wh-what's going on?”

“I don't know…”

The boy's red eyes grew wider and Dark thought he saw a light tinge of crimson across the boy's cheeks. “Wait… A-are y-you really there!?”

Dark smiled at that. He drew Dai's hand to feel the kaitou's cheek. “Apparently, I am as just as physically here as you are.”

“B-but how!?” Daisuke stammered, and then Dark smirked, he knew now that the boy was blushing as the tinge grew three shades brighter.

“I don't know, Dai-chan, and I really don't care.” The kaitou told his tamer, pulling the teen's head up, and their lips were only a few centimeters away. He was going to take this opportunity and definitely not let it go to waste. Dark could care less what caused this blessing and he would be damned if he missed out on perhaps his only chance with his affection. He was so close to closing the distance, confident by the blush on Daisuke's face. The boy wasn't going to protest; that thought made the kaitou's heart leap at hope just a little more. Perhaps he had more of a chance than the originally thought.

“Don't bother to thank us,” scoffed the wind witch from the distance.

The kaitou, growled, hating to be interrupted at that particular moment and silently swore. Daisuke, on the other hand, was as scarlet as his hair. Dark turned to glare at Kagura, trying his best not to jar the teen in his arms. There was another with her. The woman next to Kagura wore priestess robes in the colors of black and blue. Her hair was white like an old woman and here eyes were much older than her youthful appearance. She looked a bit worn out though.

“I didn't perform this ritual so that you two could sit there and ogle each other,” the second female spat.

A deep voice chuckled. Hopping down from a nearby tree branch was a taller man, only wearing what looked like to be a white-furred cape. “Well done, Tsubaki.”

“I have done what you asked of me, Naraku. Now I shall leave,” Tsubaki spat.

“Of course,” Naraku said, pulling of the hood of the garment, reavealing long wavy black tresses and evil red eyes.

“So you're Naraku?” Dark smirked. “Not that I'm ungrateful or anything, because I am, but what are you getting out of this?”

Naraku looked at Kagura and gave a slight nod. The incarnation left after the dark priestess. “That I am. You doubt my intentions?”

“No offense,” Daisuke added, “But from what we've heard, there are no good intentions from you.”

“Brave child. You will be interesting, to say the least.” he smirked. “You are correct. However, I do not believe I should tell you the price of your gift.”

“Price?”

The hanyou chuckled again. “Of course there is a price. Do you think that I would have gone to all this trouble and not require anything from you?”

“You bastard,” Dark hissed. “There's no way we're gonna do what you want!”

“Oh…” he mused. “I believe that you will… Kagura?”

“Yes, Naraku?” the witch replied as she returned.

“Did you take care of the priestess?”

“Of course.”

“Very well,” Naraku nodded then turned back to Dark and Daisuke. “Then it's time I take what I came for and we shall leave. Kagura…”

She snorted and she raised her fan. “Whatever…”

Kagura flicked her wrist and created a harsh wind. Dark placed an arm in front of his face to block the gale. Naraku took this moment and in one swift motion, sprinted at the two thieves and grasped Daisuke. Darting back up into a tree branch, he placed two fingers on the boy's pressure point, rendering him unconscious. Kagura withdrew once she received another nod from her “father.”

“Daisuke!” Dark yelled, alarmed. “What the hell do you want with him!?”

END FLASHBACK

“Then he and that witch just took off. I was too weak to chases after them…” Dark finished, angry once again.

It was now deep into the night. The tachi had decided to camp in a forest clearing just a mile north of the village, not even bothering to bury the dead. Kagome had started up a fire and began cooking.

“That bastard,” Inuyasha growled angrily.

Dark looked away from the tachi. He hadn't mentioned what the evil hanyou had told him before he disappeared with Kagura on the feather…

Naraku chuckled. “You should guard your treasures better, kaitou. If you truly want to know, come back to this very spot by sunrise… If not, then I will assume this boy is nothing to you.”

I will wait. No one is more important than Daisuke… the kaitou decided.

“I'm very sorry, Dark-san,” Kagome said, placing a caring hand on his shoulder.

Dark met her gaze. He removed her hand from his person and just stared back into the fire. “It's not your fault. It's mine. Don't feel sorry for me. Feel sorry for Daisuke. He's the one that I failed to protect.”

“Stop it,” Inuyasha growled. “Are you just gonna sit there and be pissed off about it?”

“Then what the hell do you suggest I do, mutt face!?”

“I suggest, kaitou, that your sittin' around here ain't gonna help the kid at all!” the hanyou yelled into Dark's face. “Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, we'll go after him!”

Dark's mind raced. How was he going to get them to stay at least for the night? If he didn't go back at sunrise, then what would Naraku do with Daisuke? Whatever it was, he couldn't let that happen. The kaitou then thought of something. It was lame, but he'd look uncool for his tamer's sake. “I can't.”

“What do you mean, Dark-san?” Sango questioned, petting Kirara on her lap.

“The ritual must've taken more out of me than I thought. It would be pointless to chase after Naraku and Kagura without the strength to take Daisuke back, am I right?”

Inuyasha growled. He hated it when someone was reasonable among them. Kagome told the hanyou that the kaitou was right on this. Mirokou agreed, stating that if they left now, they'd be too tired to fight Naraku and win. Sango wanted to leave, but made a comment that she's rather take the evil hanyou on and win, even if that meant they would have to wait a little bit longer. Inuyasha growled again, hating being outnumbered among his tachi. Finally, after a few more minutes of arguing, the inu agreed that they would stay here the night and when he woke up, they'd be leaving.

“But what about Dai-niisan?” whined Shippo.

Dark smiled. “Daisuke is just as much me as I am him. He will be fine. Emiko has trained him well. Where ever that guy takes him, he'll be able to escape.”

The kitsune nodded. “If you're sure, Dark-san.”

Not that it matters, because I'll do what it takes to get Daisuke back…

PAGEBREAK

Mirokou watched the kaitou intensely. He was keeping something from the rest of the group. His aura was flaring. No matter how calm he looked on the outside, he was furious and panicking on the inside. This disturbed the monk greatly. Naraku must've gotten to Dark to upset him that much. Perhaps the hanyou was aware of his feelings for the younger thief? Surely if there was any doubt in Mirokou's mind about that, the kaitou's reactions to recent events had bade such thoughts goodbye. In that respect, he felt for Dark. It was indeed hard to lose someone of such a high value.

Dark then turned and faced the monk, the firelight making the glare in his amethyst eyes almost demonic in nature. He knew that Mirokou's senses were focused on him. Dark was not at naïve when it came to someone checking up on him. Mirokou should've known that the kaitou would not be so easy to watch, unlike Daisuke. The monk smiled, hoping that would lessen the suspicion. He inwardly frowned when he felt the kaitou's aura fade. Dark was hiding it from him. This made Mirokou worry even more. Was he about to do something on his own? Surely he would not act without aid, would he?

The monk pushed those thoughts out of his mind. It was time to rest, as Kagome was pulling out her sleeping bag and the fire was dying. Inuyasha leapt into the closest tree and perched in it, as was custom. Kagome pulled out a second sleeping bag for Sango, who gladly accepted and began to settle into it, Kirara remaining at her side. Shippo, of course, was ready whenever Kagome was. Dark leaned against another tree, eyes closed and head titled back. Mirokou placed his staff to the right on his shoulder and placed his arms in his sleeves, allowing his senses to stretch out and feel; should anyone come to cause them harm, he would know right away. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to fall into a light sleep.

It was a few hours later that he felt something stir. He opened his eyes slightly to see the morning light peeking through some of the trees. Was it sunrise already? Inuyasha would want to go in a few hours, three at the maximum. The monk glanced around to see if anyone else was up. Kagome and Shippo were snuggled together. Kirara was curled up on a sleeping Sango's delectable chest. Mirokou pushed his perverted thoughts aside. Inuyasha, of course, was snoring lightly up in the tree, nothing new. However, when he looked to see how the kaitou was fairing, he saw nothing but bark. Mirokou frowned. “My friend that was very foolish of you to do.”

He got up and sighed. “Inuyasha?”

The hanyou's ear twitched. He yawned, displaying his fangs. “Whatdya want, Mirokou?”

“How long ago did Dark-san leave?”

Inuyasha landed gently in front of the young monk. “I'd say about twenty minutes ago. Do you think we should wake the girls up?”

“No,” Mirokou said. “Let's just go see what our friend is up to, shall we?”

“Tch…” he snorted. “Mr. Purple Hair is starting to become a pain in the ass.”

The monk lifted his finger to his chin in thought. “That reminds me of a certain hanyou that I know. What a coincidence!”

“Shut up and let's get going. He couldn't have gotten too far by now…”

“My lord, what is it?” asked a little girl in a yellow and orange yukata, holding a bouquet of wildflowers.

“Do not bother him, girl!” a green imp chided, holding a large two-headed staff.

“Jaken,” an emotionless voice reprimanded. Something was amiss in his lands. The trees, and all the other various kinds of flora, were emitting something peculiar in this morning light. They were brimming with energy and life; it was an uncommon occurrence that was an omen. Weather this omen was good or bad, only time would tell. Either way, this was his lands. He would find out and take care of the matter before it could get out of hand. Nothing should be able to happen in these lands without their lord knowing.

The two other persons in his tachi were beginning to get bothersome. Their squabbling was starting to hurt his over sensitive ears. Without removing the mask from his face, he kicked the imp in the head and simply moved on towards to foci of this energy. The girl looked at the fallen vassal, shrugged and ran on ahead to catch up with the lord. Growling, the green imp soon followed suit.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” a nervous Towa asked her former master.

Satoshi glared, giving his answer. He had one hell of a headache after he woke up and he felt so weak that even a transformation into Krad felt better. However, he had pulled himself out of Towa's grasp when he has awaken and demanded that she get on with it immediately. Something was not right and he needed to get Niwa back soon. He felt odd, even hours after that fainting spell happened. Krad was poking at the back of his mind. It seemed even his other half was not himself at the moment.

`We need to go now, Satoshi-sama,' Krad nearly moaned. He felt about the same as the Hikari.

So now you're willing? I'm touched.

`Do not get carried away,' he scoffed. `If there is something wrong with the both of us and the little Niwa is the cause, I want to find out what it is and fix it. Then I can kill him for doing whatever this is to us.'

You seem to be losing your grip as it is.

`Hmph. I have not. I am just deciding to be compliant, that is all.'

That is what I meant.

He felt Krad turn from him. The blunette focused his attention on the silver-haired girl. She was examining the tree. They had left for the Higurashi Shrine as soon as Hiwatari had found the strength to stand. The Guide glanced at Satoshi. “I can do it, Hikari-sama. I just don't now where you will turn up. I will be accompanying you, of course, but I don't think this tree will cooperate with us.”

“But you can get us to the time period we need?” Satoshi frowned, he was starting to get annoyed and pissed.

“Yes, but again, I don't know where…”

“Let's go then already!” he snapped, walking to her and the tree.

“Right away, geez!” Towa frowned.

She clutched onto the Hikari's shoulders and began chanting. Light shot up into the skies, electrifying the air. Sparks could be seen around the pillar of light. The world began to disintegrate around them. Satoshi felt something pull at him then as if he was submerged underwater. He looked around. There was a faint purple light everywhere. Bubbles floated around them, each containing an image. “Is this?”

“The passage of time as the tree perceives it,” Towa finished. “Careful not to look at those memories for too long or else you may end up there.”

“Memories?”

`Those `bubbles' are memories of the Tree of Ages, Satoshi-sama.'

The purple-pink hue began to fade. In its place, tall grasses came in like brush strokes of a painting. Satoshi could make out the grass through the various mid-tones that were being painted on to create the shadows, layer by layer. Then it seemed that the sky was that of morning; brilliant pink, blue, and light hazy violet scattered across the sky, clouds billowing in like a child sketching a flower. It was a fascinating sight, to say the least. Even though he could see the trees being etched as a forest to his left and even further to the right by miles, he could feel anything solid. That came last.

Towa let go and breathed in the new scents. She “poofed” into her bird form and sat on top of Satoshi's head. The Hikari didn't mind at all. Instead, he started to trek into the woods. He needed to find out where the other tamer was. Satoshi prodded Krad. “Well?”

`I feel nothing, Satoshi-sama.' Krad mused. `Nothing, at least, of Dark and the Niwa boy.'

“Then what?”

`It is coming this way. Whatever is approaching is strong, very much so. I would be wary, Satoshi-sama.'

“Something is coming our way!” Towa chirped.

Satoshi stopped in his tracks. He was not going to go into this forest without first seeing what was going to meet him. The tamer did not have to wait long. What he saw didn't impress him at all. It was a man, or so his appearance was, with long silver hair. His eyes were a cold amber, a gaze that Satoshi often had himself; two magenta streaks ran across his cheeks and an indigo, or blue since it was only beginning to get light out, crescent moon was upon his forehead. He wore armor and a furry white pelt draped over his shoulder. Following behind him was a young girl and a green creature.

“Human,” he stated coldly, “why do you trespass on my land?”

PAGEBREAK

Daisuke blinked. He had regained consciousness a few hours ago. When he had awoken, he was in this room. The teen thought that Naraku would've put him in a cell or something and certainly wasn't expecting to wake up to this. He could see the sunrise out his window. Dai wondered about Dark. Was he really imagining it when the kaitou's face was so close? The red-head touched his lips lightly, remembering Dark's warm breathe against them, and began to blush all over again. Had that been real?

“Are you okay, not that I care…” Kagura said from the doorway.

“Yes,” Daisuke responded. “Why am I being kept here?”

“Naraku does as he pleases,” she snorted. “I have no idea why other than there's something he wants from you. Keeping you comfortable and healthy seems to be key to that.”

“You don't like him very much, do you?”

“No, I don't.”

Dai titled his head slightly. “Then why do you serve him?”

She stopped leaning against the door and turned away from him. “I don't have any other options. Now, just so you know, you won't be able to leave this room. Naraku has placed a barrier around it. I shall return so that you may eat.”

“Thank you.” He smiled.

“Hmph. Don't you dare think anything of it. I would kill you where you stand if Naraku hadn't commanded me to make sure you are well,” she growled and walked away.

“Dark… I hope you are all right…”

PAGEBREAK

Dark tapped his foot impatiently. He was here, so where was that hanyou? Would Daisuke be with him?

“Worry not, kaitou,” said half-breed said, walking calmly into the arranged meeting place. “Your other self is quite well and should be getting fed as we speak.”

“What do you want with him?” Dark growled.

“That I cannot tell you,” he smiled. “But what I will offer you is a trade.”

“What is it?”

“The rest of the Shikon for your boy.”

“What? That's it? You want the thingie that the girl Kagome has? And you would just hand him over?” the kaitou frowned, doubtful.

“That is all that I require. You have my word that I will not harm the boy and once the jewel is in my hand, he shall be given to you. If you fail, I promise nothing.”

“DARK-SAN!” Dark heard in the distance.

“Seems like the monk and Inuyasha have followed after you. Heh heh. It is your choice, kaitou. Should you need to know how to find me, only ask and I will tell you,” Naraku said before vanishing into the morning sunlight.

The two intruders came into view. Dark wanted so much to hurt them for interrupting the conversation. What was he to do? He was not going to tell them what had happened here, but what could he tell them? Could he betray their trust in order to get Daisuke back? Morally, he didn't want to go that far. Yet, his tamer was more important than anything, anyone, else. Daisuke came first and if he had to become a devil and an accomplice, then he would. Anything to have Daisuke back. “Hey…”

“Was Naraku here?” Inuyasha growled. “I know his scent…”

“Only that witch,” he lied. “I came here to find some clues and she showed up to tell me that Daisuke was being held at Naraku's castle.”

“Tch… That's Kagura for you. Tells you some information and leaves out everything else,” Inuyasha snorted.

“All the more reason to find out where Naraku is,” the monk agreed.

Dark glanced longingly back to the spot where he almost kissed Dai. Soon… Dai-chan… I promise anything that I will have you back into my arms.

Wiz darted around the hotel. Satoshi hadn't given him the extra key before leaving and now he was trying to stay out of sight and still be Daisuke at the same time. Not only was the familiar running from the Haradas, but Takeshi was confident to track him down as well. The teen had said something about a tournament or whatnot and was hounding down every guy in the class. Why did all these scary people follow Daisuke around anyways!?

“Daisuke!” he heard Takeshi call out. “We need another man for Mahjong!”

“Daisuke!” came Risa. “Where are you? I wanted to ask you something!”

“DAISUKE NIWA!” roared Riku. “WHERE THE HELL DO YOU GET OFF LEAVING YOUR GIRLFRIEND BEHIND!? GET BACK HERE!”

The rabbit whimpered. This was going to be a long scary ride. He started to creep out of his hiding spot behind one of the plants in the lobby. Wiz looked up to see if anyone was coming his way and sighed in relief when he saw no one. He took one step out the door only to be glomped. “It's Niwa-kun!!”

Wiz looked up, hoping it wasn't who he often saw Dai being tackled by. Well… So much for hope… He was in the arms of Saga… Perfect… What else could happen?
