Queen ofWings
Prologue
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
The sky was black, illuminated by the scarlet moon that stared, like a bleeding eye, at the destruction below. The place? Azumano, Japan. The year? 1604 AD. The nation was ruled by the Hikari family. Or at least it was, before war broke out between the citizens of the country. Those of White Wings - the Hikaris and their followers - and those of Black Wings - the Mousy family and their followers.
The White Wings and the Black Wings, bitter enemies since the beginning of time. Yet in the midst of battle, a forbidden romance bloomed between these two clans. One that was destined to end in suffering.
"Dark!"
The Black Wing jolted up, the maroon bed sheets falling to expose his bare chest. The loud voice had awoken him, and caused a wave of panic to wash through his mind. Beside him, a feminine figure stirred slightly.
"Dark Mousy, I know you're in here! Release the woman, and I might be merciful enough to allow you to live!"
Dark looked down to the woman next to him. "Miss Harada!"
The woman stirred again, this time blinking open her large, chocolate colored eyes. Hearing the loud banging coming from the front door, she instinctively clutched the man next to her. She heard the angry yelling and the threats from outside, and her body shivered uncontrollably. "Krad...how did he find us?!"
Dark looked to the White Wing and closed his eyes. "He was able to track you down. I shouldn't have put it past him. Krad is smarter than we've given him credit for. He's the Lord of the White Wings, and as such he can easily find any other member of his clan; especially one as important to him as you, Riku."
Riku gazed at the other with sorrowful eyes. "But you are the Thief Lord of the Black Wings, and this is your turf. Surely there is a way you know of for us to get out of Krad's grasp!"
"If I know Krad like I think I do then I know he's betting on us trying to escape. Maybe the best thing to do is just waiting for him to find us and then fight him."
The auburn haired woman shook her head. "That won't do, Dark! You know you aren't powerful enough to take on Krad by yourself! You don't even have backup!" she took his hands in her own holding them to her chest. "If you stay and fight, then we will both die. Escaping is the best thing we can do."
Dark sighed, squeezing her hands. "He will follow us."
"I know where we can go."
The amethyst-eyed thief nodded and stood from the bed. "Clothe yourself, Miss Harada," he said, a smile forming on his lips. The woman blushed and did as told, slipping the grey colored nightdress over her shoulders. "Shall we fly then?"
Riku nodded, gasping when Dark quickly took her in his arms, black wings unfolding from his back. Through the skylight they exited, immediately capturing the attention of the White Wing Lord, as well as all the guards with him.
"Quickly, catch them before they can reach the city boundaries!" Krad commanded, pearly white wings protruding from the white robe he wore and lifting him up into the sky. "Obey me! Follow them!"
Dark soared away from the commotion, leaving the soldiers of the White Wing Lord far behind him. Though his wings of jet-black weren't as beautiful a sight as Krad's and the others of that clan, his were speedy and blended in well with the surrounding night sky.
Riku clung to the Black Wing's chest, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck. "You must land at the Towa no Shirube's," she explained, pointing south to the lighthouse. "She will help us."
Dark quickly changed directions quickly, an uneasy feeling forming in the pit of his stomach. The Towa no Shirube was a guardian that had belonged to the Hikari family for generations. How could it help them? The White Wing, sensing his discomfort, smiled reassuringly. "I promise, she is loyal to the Black Wing clan."
OoOoOoO
"There is a way..."
Dark and Riku stared patiently at the Towa no Shirube. Towa paced around the room, her birdlike eyes scanning the sky above them. Smiling coyly, she pointed in the pair. "But! It involves a sacrifice."
"Sacrifice?" Dark repeated, a crease forming on his forehead. "What kind of sacrifice?"
Towa turned away, showing her back to the two. "In order to free yourself from Krad, for the time being at least, you must offer one of your souls to the mighty gods above!" She pointed to the heavens, her expression one of seriousness. "The spell will last until the sacrificed is reborn and falls in love."
Riku bit her lip, holding her lover tightly. She wanted to be free of Krad, free from his rule, and free from being his wife, but she had no idea that being sacrificed was part of the plan. She would gladly give up her life for her love, but Dark would never be able to handle her death. She knew that it would cause him tremendous heartache.
"I will do it."
Towa turned to the dark haired male. "Will you?"
Dark nodded in affirmation. "I will, so Riku can be free of him."
Riku blinked, and then stood quickly. "No, you can't." She looked to the floor, her cheeks flushing slightly. "I...I should be the sacrifice. It's me that Krad wants, not you, Dark. Krad...I never told you before, but he placed his powers in me. If something were to happen, he would be virtually powerless."
The Thief Lord shook his head. "I don't want to live without you, Riku."
"Do you think I want to live without you, Dark?" The brown-eyed woman sighed. "This is the only way. If it is me who is sacrificed, you will be able to live on without worrying if Krad was after you or not. If I am sacrificed Krad's powers will be gone, and you and the Black Wings can take over the Hikari throne. The war will end. Dark, you must understand that this is the only way things will work out." She took his hands in his, squeezing them tightly. "You must understand, Dark."
Dark looked to her, keeping her gaze focused on him. "How long will it be...till you return?"
Towa looked between the couple, closing her eyes. "It's not certain how long it will take before her Spirit is reborn. It could be anywhere from one to one thousand years. But what is certain is that when she is reborn, she will have no memory of her past with you. You will have to awaken the memories from deep inside of her, and by doing so; you will unlock her powers as Queen of the White Wings."
The Black Wing glanced briefly at the guardian. "No memories?" he questioned.
"None," Towa answered sadly.
Riku balled her hands into fists, a determined look on her face. "I will remember, don't worry." She wrapped her arms around Dark, burying her face in his neck. "I know I could never forget you...for too long, at least." Raising her head, she pressed their lips together. "Wait for me, Dark Mousy."
"I will wait till the end of my days for you, Riku Harada." Dark stood, taking the woman in his arms and lifting her chin with one hand. Leaning down, he captured her lips in a final, forbidden kiss.
The Towa no Shirube watched the scene, her eyes watering slightly. "I hate this part of my job," she sniffed, wiping the tears away. "Dark, you must go now. Krad and his followers will be arriving soon and I wish not for you to witness your love being sacrificed."
The Thief Lord nodded, whispering his last goodbye to the auburn haired woman before extending his wings and fleeing from the lighthouse. He could hear not too far away the orders being given by the enemy. And as he flew, narrowly missing their attacks, he could hear the screams of his dying love echo through the night sky.
Picturing Riku dying caused sharp pains in Dark's heart. Losing control of his wings, he went plummeting down into the black woods below. His last thoughts before losing consciousness were of Riku, and how one day he would find her and make her remember their past together.
