Chapter 2: Confessions

The scent of copper clogged his nose. Humidity fogged his airways. There was grit, coldness beneath him. His breath hitched. His hand moved, found purchase. He pulled, shuddered at the feel of his body scraping along the tile.
No.
A low moan rose from his lips as he felt a shiver work through his body. He heard the door creaking, cringed. His hand moved, found purchase. He pulled, dragging himself a few more inches across the floor. He coughed, heaved. A little more bile found its way to his mouth. He spat and kept going.
"Yagami-kun, remain still. You have been injured," a soft voice, it sounded so far away.
No.
Another few inches and his eyes managed to pull themselves open, glassy and unfocused. Someone was moaning. "No."
There were hands and he was struggling, pushing them away, turning until he felt his back pressed against a cold, moist wall. "No!" His breath hitched, body trembled. Cold air washed over him, making him keenly aware of his nakedness.
No, no, no, no, no!
Strength, where it came from he didn't know, but he used it. Pushed, struggled, struck out. He heard a curse, smelled the tang of blood in the air. He struggled until, on his arm, a pinch.
Blackness claimed him, and he was able to rest.
Softness. That was the first thing he noticed. Softness beneath him, covering him. Like a safe embrace, blankets weighed heavily on his form. He blinked his eyes open slowly, let them focus on the room around him.
"You are awake, Yagami-kun. How do you feel?" Ryuzaki inquired in a near whisper.
It seemed he anticipated the headache that was pounding around in Light's skull like a rabid boar. "What happened?"
"A question to answer a question is rude, Yagami-kun. How do you feel?" Ryuzaki pressed.
"Sore," he sighed wearily, raising a hand to his head, feeling the gauze that was wrapped around it. "What happened?"
"You fell in the shower, Yagami-kun. Too much steam leaves no room for oxygen," Ryuzaki explained.
"In the... shower?" He felt his throat tighten as he remembered. He closed his eyes tightly, but it didn't stop the memories from flooding him. Didn't stop him from remembering the gravel, the rain, the sweat, the tears. The zip of the man's pants.
The hot shower, the scrubbing, hours of scrubbing until the steam, the exhaustion had overcome him and everything had fallen blank.
"Yagami-kun. Why did you hurt yourself?" Ryuzaki asked when Light's eyes opened once again.
"Hurt myself?" Light frowned. "What are you talking about, Ryuzaki?"
"You have severe abrasions on your skin. It appears that you scrubbed your flesh raw. Why?" Ryuzaki asked blandly.
"What does it matter why I needed to scrub that hard?" Light retorted, defensive.
Ryuzaki sighed. "Another question to answer a question. When your hygiene rituals lead to self-inflicted harm, intervention is necessary, Yagami-kun."
"I don't need an intervention," Light snapped. What he needed was a memory block. Some way to forget what had happened, to erase it. Killing the man, he knew, would not be enough.
But what was Kira's justice if it was not enough?
"Was, Yagami-kun?" Ryuzaki smirked faintly, hid it by pressing his thumb to his mouth.
Had he said that aloud? Light blinked, glancing over at L, let the silence linger.
"You asked, but what was Kira's justice if it was not enough. Why do you say 'was', Yagami-kun? Is Kira dead?" His eyes were intent upon Light's face, searching.
Light considered it for a long moment, looked down at his hands, at the watch that was still on his wrist. He remembered the rape, the shower, closed his eyes again. "Not quite."
"Are you Kira, Yagami-kun?" Ryuzaki asked softly.
A thousand ideas hit Light's mind at once then and he leaned back in the bed, sighing softly and gazing at the ceiling. He swallowed heavily. "I am," he replied softly. Even from the infirmary floor, he could hear his father in the floor below, yelling in disbelief. He closed his eyes tightly in resignation. "Or rather, I was. Kira is... no longer a part of me."
"The first Kira, you mean," Ryuzaki supplied.
"Yes," Light looked over at L, watching him. "Misa Amane is the other Kira. I suggest you have her give up her memories and release her."
"And why would I do that, Yagami-kun? Or should I call you Kira?" Ryuzaki's smile was impish behind his thumb.
"Because Rem loves her. She will kill you if you put Misa's life in danger," he replied simply.
"So the shinigami will kill me, to save Misa-san?" Ryuzaki turned to the computer he had nearby, pressed a button and spoke into the microphone. "Ask the shinigami to confirm the information."
A moment passed before Aizawa replied. "The shinigami confirms it."
Again, Ryuzaki's gaze fell to Light, stayed for a long moment. "Why has Yagami-kun chosen now to reveal himself?"
A bitter, dark laugh left Light's lips then. "Do you expect me to believe that a thorough physical wasn't performed?" he spat.
"If you're implying that we found signs of recent trauma, your assumption is correct," Ryuzaki chewed on his thumb.
"Then you understand. My judgment is no longer pure," Light cast a glare at L.
"On the contrary," Ryuzaki replied smoothly. "You are humbled and therefore a better judge. However, your method is still highly illegal. I will require your Death Note. All pieces of it. You are under arrest, Yagami Light."
Light opened his watch, pulled out the piece of Death Note. "This is the only piece I have in the building," then he told L the location of the other Death Note. He said nothing when he was handcuffed to the bed, simply watched the rain fall upon the window with a blank gaze.
Distantly, he thought the weather suited the way he felt rather well. He closed his eyes and, with the help of a mild sedative in his IV, found a peaceful sleep.
