“Ryuzaki, what are you doing?” Light’s smooth, steady voice drifted over from behind a tall stack of papers. There was no response. “Ryuzaki?”

L felt some slight pressure against his wrist. Light was gingerly tugging on the chain that bound the two men together. Peeling his eyes away from the screen, L gazed inquisitively at Light. “Yes? What is it, Light-kun?”

Light met L’s penetrating gaze, seemingly unabashed. “What are you doing?”

“I believe I am observing Amane, the second Kira suspect,” L replied simply, averting his gaze back to the observation screen where Misa Amane could be seen dancing in front of a mirror, scantily clad in her most intimate apparel.

“Ryuzaki,” Light began, in his most self-righteous tone, but was interrupted by L, who did not want another lecture on his questionable methods and morals. “Light-kun, I understand that this is an infringement upon Misa Amane’s privacy, but it is a necessary step in catching and detaining the second Kira, and ultimately, Kira himself.”

Light folded his arms across his chest and leaned back in his chair so he had a clearer view of Ryuzaki. The detective was daintily holding a cherry above a bowl, and in a contrastingly sudden and somewhat awkward motion, he raised his hand so that the fruit was dangling at head-level. As Misa twirled around, L slipped the cherry into his mouth, tugging at the stem, which broke off. L kept his hand level with his head, and as he chewed he began to twirl the stem between his long, slender middle finger and thumb. Light suddenly felt sick, but ignored the feeling, as he did with all his emotions that didn’t make sense.

Pushing all nausea aside, Light spoke, a slight edginess to his usually calculatingly calm voice. “Ryuzaki, I thought you’d cleared all suspicion against Amane after our confinement.”

L dropped the cherry stem back into the bowl and turned away from the screen. All his attention was on Light now, and Light felt better, but ignored that fact. “This is not like Light-kun,” Ryuzaki said emotionlessly, face void of expression.

“What do you mean, Ryuzaki?” asked Light, unfolding his arms and sitting up, ready to counter a verbal attack.

L did not move from his normal abnormal position. He rested his hands on his knees and continued to stare at Light with those obstructing, judging, owl-like eyes that didn’t miss a thing. Light felt slightly exposed, but since he had nothing to hide, as he was not Kira, he didn’t look away. “I mean,” said L matter-of-factly, “that Light-kun usually thinks more before he talks. If you remember correctly, I stated, and you agreed, that although Amane was in confinement for over fifty days, physical evidence still suggests that she was indeed connected to the one who sent those tapes to Sakura TV. That is why we are keeping her under surveillance.”

Ryuzaki was right. Light knew all of this. The truth was, the fact that Ryuzaki was watching Misa so scrutinizingly when she was dressed in only lingerie greatly bothered Light for some reason. Annoyance at his own unexplainable feelings leaked into Light’s carefully constructed facial composure, and L caught this change in Light’s expression and tilted his head to one side, as if that would help him better read the adolescent.

“I just don’t think it’s appropriate...” Light began, but L once more cut him off.

“We’ve already been over this, Light-kun.” Not again.

“Yes, well it would appear that you were enjoying yourself, Ryuzaki,” Light lashed out, and immediately wished he hadn’t. Ryuzaki’s eyes had widened in curiosity. “I mean, she’s my girlfriend, you know,” Light muttered, feigning feelings for Misa.

“I thought Misa’s love for Light-kun was one-sided?” L asked coyly, “Or has that changed over the course of a few days?”

“Th- That’s not the point!”

“Although it would be normal for any 25-year-old male to enjoy watching an attractive 20-year-old woman, that is not the case for me. This task is strictly professional,” L paused to grab another cherry from the bowl, “and for the sole purpose of catching Kira.” Still staring at Light, L ripped the cherry from its stem with his teeth. Light was immediately comforted by this action, although he didn’t divulge into why that was.

L glanced back at the observation screen. Misa was now curled up in bed and the light was off. He turned back to Light. The teenager was staring at him, but quickly looked away. Strange. “I think it’s about time we turned in for the night too, Light-kun,” L said as he stood up from his chair.

“Yes,” yawned Light. “Shall we go then, Ryuzaki?”
