From Here To Eternity

Light had been wandering along on this barren plain for quite some time now. It was boring, to say the least. You'll like it there. Puh. God, he hoped Ryuk was suffering in the worst of ways right now. With him gone and the notebooks to surely be destroyed, no one would be there to feed the Shinigami his daily dose of apples. Yeah, didn't think that one through, did you, Ryuk?

This train of thought led him to simply pondering on that bastard's betrayal and those few minutes that led up to his death. It was not the glorious ending he had in mind. If anything, it was downright embarrassing. Great, now he was feeling betrayed, embarrassed, and angry.

With little regards to the wispy forms hovering in the distance of the foggy horizon, Light let out a great shout of frustration, cursing the names of those who had been there, those he once knew, the criminals he killed, and yes, even the actor Ryuuga Hideki for owning such a name in the first place for L to use (and damn you, too, Tom Cruise!).

Naturally, with such aggravation comes the need to physically exert oneself, a task that was limited to kicking small rocks, waving his arms about in great circles, shaking his fists at the sky, and dropping to his knees to punch the ground at the unfairness of it all.

“Really, now, Light-kun, you're making enough noise to wake the dead.”

Light stopped.

Light blinked.

Light knew that voice.

There was only one person in existence who held the ability to sound thoughtful and condescending at the same time.

Looking over, Light's dread was confirmed.

“Ryuuzaki.”

“Light,” the infamous detective greeted back solemnly, somehow managing to keep any form of delight or amusement from his face.

“What are you doing here?” Light demanded defensively, not at all pleased that his moment of outburst was being interrupted.

L blinked. “If you didn't want me here, you shouldn't have killed me in the first place.”

Light scowled. The man did have a point.

“Speaking of,” L crouched down so that he was level with the brunette, “considering how close we had gotten in the days before my death, Kira could have at least been kind enough to choose a more pleasant way for me to die, you know.”

“Oh yeah?” Light snorted. “How? Death by too much chocolate?”

L's eyes glazed over at the thought and a rather disturbing smile crossed his face.

“I was kidding.”

The grin fell. “Light-kun is no fun. Could it be he is feeling sore about Kira's untimely demise?”

A dark glare was cast before Light seemed to get a hold of himself. Chuckling softly, a humorless grin graced his features as he rolled over to sit upright and look up at the sunless sky. “I'm in Hell, aren't I? That's the only explanation for you being here to greet me. Is this my punishment? To spend the rest of eternity in your company?”

“Actually, you're yelling and screaming attracted my attention. Any resemblance this place holds to your image of Hell and my appearing before you in such a timely manner are purely coincidental.” Switching tracks, L voice took on a somber tone. “When I ran into Mello here, I was beginning to worry Kira had the upper hand.”

“Beginning to wor-?”

“But I'm glad to see that's not the case.”

Light stared. He couldn't help it. Even in death, this guy was just as ridiculous and moronic-!

“I suppose, in hindsight, it is a good thing Kira defeated me before Light died,” L said thoughtfully, wrapping his arms around his knees and looking intently at his companion.

“And why is that?” Light humored.

“Because with Kira destroyed, I now get to see my friend again.”

Light stopped.

Light blinked.

Light watched as Ryuuzaki's face bloomed with a true smile.

“Welcome to your new home, Light-kun.”

Unable to stop himself, Light smiled back as the full implications of what Ryuuzaki was saying sunk in.

His new home? Yeah, he supposed he could live with that.

Owari.

End Note: I'm sure you all have heard of psychological deaths before? Er…no? I could explain, but I'm hungry and craving some cheesecake right now in celebration of Day One of finals being over. Hooray! (throws confetti)
