Death Note Fan Fiction ❯ Light and Shadow ❯ Light and Shadow (part 2) ( Chapter 2 )

A quick initial glance around the room showed that once again, L was missing. Light sighed. It had been two weeks! Why was he still acting so weird? And if Light himself was causing it, why didn't he just say so? It's not like he was a real detective or anything, he was just helping out…or so Light wanted everyone to believe. But still…this obvious shunning L had begun was getting bothersome.
After pretending to look over some files for an hour, Light stood up and stretched. “Wow, I'm still kinda beat from school. Mind if I take a quick breather, dad?”
His father gave a small smile, a proud smile. His perfect A-student son, always working so hard. Light's heart squeezed a bit tightly at the fact that he had to live a secret double life and that he could never tell his father about it.
“Sure, Light. You deserve a break.” He gave him another heart-wrenching smile and turned back to Mogi, showing him some pictures from a manila envelope.
The boy slipped out of the room, grabbing his jacket off his chair as he went. His concentration was off, not that he'd really been trying to work a moment ago. He knew who Kira was, why make such an effort? His goal was mainly to make sure he stayed a step ahead of everyone else…especially L. He'd come too close with finding him out during his incarceration and even when they'd been handcuffed together. Looking back during that time in particular, he found it quite strange that L had rarely spoken to him even then.
The main room the taskforce was now using was a large and spacious area, the first room accessed when coming out of the security checkpoint. On either side of the room was a wide staircase leading to the upper levels. Light figured a trip around the building would serve for a nice reprieve. Besides, the place had been built just for them, right?
The fifth floor was Misa's. Not that she used it much since she was always out, rehearsing for some new fashion show or another. Still, Light decided to skip that hallway and continued on to the next. Anywhere that Misa had been he considered tainted.
He figured he'd been away long enough and started to turn around, when he realized that he'd reached the roof. L had once said that two helicopters were up there. Not that he'd never seen one before, but…a quick look wouldn't hurt, right?
He pushed open the heavy metal door to the outside, all to stop dead.
A torrential downpour had started, and through the icy sheets of rain, he could just make out L's form, standing shoeless as he stared off at nothing in particular.
What the hell--? Now this really took the icing in his weird behavior.
“Ryuzaki! What are you doing?!” He tried to shout to him.
L flicked his eyes to the sound, but didn't seem to spot him. His gaze went back to whatever point in the distance he'd been focusing on before.
“Ryuzaki!” Light tried calling again, but either L truly could not hear him or refused to acknowledge him. Either way, it looked like he'd have to go out there and drag him back in.
Throwing his jacket over his head, he braced his body against the freezing harsh winds. When he'd reached level with L, he tapped the older boy's shoulder. L jumped back more out of surprise of being touched than of seeing Light standing there.
“Come on, what are you doing out here?” Light yelled over nature's fury.
L was silent for a moment, then said. “The bells…don't you hear them?”
Light strained his ears for a moment, then mentally smacked himself when he heard nothing. Of course there were no bells, especially with this kind of weather. Unless L was speaking of the chime of a public clock.
“Look Ryuzaki, I'm not hearing anything. How about we go back inside before we catch our death out here?” Light flinched as a particularly strong gust of wind blew stinging needles of rain onto his face.
L's eyes flicked at him again, then away. The same way they had a moment ago. So he had seen him. And had chosen to ignore him. That bastard!
“Have you ever told a lie, Light?” L asked instead. His voice hinted at something…sadness?
Light was caught off-guard by the question. “What? What's that have to do with anything?” Was this question Kira related? And how do you answer a question like that without making yourself look guilty or suspicious?”
“Just answer, please.” L said, still sounding as far off as his staring.
Light sighed and shook his head slowly. “There's really no way of going through life without telling some kind of lie, even if it's to protect someone. We all lie at least once.”
“Hm.” L murmured.
“Okay, Ryuzaki. I'm soaked to the bone. Seriously, we should get back inside.” Really, Light was starting to get nervous. Had he answered correctly? It was the honest truth, everyone lies at some point. Still…would that make L consider him to be Kira again? He knew that just because the handcuffs had been taken off didn't mean he'd dropped his suspicions. As they walked back inside, he felt L's intense gaze on his back, making his skin crawl with what the detective could be thinking.
Once through the doorway, L slammed and bolted it shut. Light started removing his shoes, hating the squishy sound and feel of water in them. Great Ryuzaki, just great. I let myself get soaked for what? Now you probably suspect me of Kira more than ever. You're getting a little too close to the truth. I'll have to take you out of the picture here very soon—what?!!
Light felt something touch his shoulders and looked up from where he was sitting on the steps to see that L had draped a towel across his shoulders. Another one he had hanging off his own hair. “Figured you could use it,” L said quietly, hands in his pockets as he shuffled his feet. “You were starting to shiver.”
Light quirked an eyebrow. What angle was he taking now? “Oh, um, thanks…” He wasn't going to let L throw him off guard that easily! It'd take more than a kind gesture to make him—er, why was he now drying Light's feet?
“Ryuzaki, you don't have to, I could—“
“Shh. Just hold still.”
Light obeyed, and winced as the boy rubbed a bit too hard on his soles. But after a few moments, by small degrees, the pain ebbed and it actually was somewhat relaxing. If you could get over the fact that your biggest rival was giving you a foot massage.
Suddenly, L stopped. His head remained bowed, covered by his long black strands. “Light…? Have you ever…cared for someone?” His voice was very quiet, as though afraid someone might overhear them.
Oh no. Not another trick question. Was it a trick? This was getting more bothersome than his disappearing acts. “Of course I care for others,” Light said good-naturedly. “I mean, I have my entire family who cares about me also. It's only natural to care for people.”
L frowned and looked off to the side. “That's not what I meant,” he said very quietly. “Have you ever…cared for someone other than family or friends? In a…wanting way?”
Light blinked. “I've dated, if that's what you mean—“
“It's not.”
Light narrowed his eyes in confusion, then blushed as his meaning hit him. Oh. “Well…no, not like that, not really. I've always been so busy with school to truly notice any girls that I might have a true interest in. Mainly, I just casually dated so my family would stop questioning me about it.” He gave a fake chuckle while rubbing the back of his head. For some strange reason, Matsuda came to mind.
L was silent for another pause. “So then. You've never…given yourself over to emotions for someone else?” His head was bowed again, shielding his face but not the evident trepidation in his voice.
Light was starting to get annoyed with him beating around the bush like this. “Ryuzaki, what are you—“
His question was smothered out by coal-black eyes. Light only had enough time to register that L was within inches of his face, before a pair of lips brushed his own. The touch was quick, soft, and a second later was gone. If it wasn't for the blush on L's face and the one he could feel on his own, he'd have wondered if it had happened at all.
“Ryu…zaki. What…? Why?” Light found it hard to make a coherent sentence.
L's eyes narrowed and he turned his face away again. “I don't believe there is a true answer to that. How can I explain what I feel? That despite the fact that you very well may be the biggest serial killer in history, I have feelings for you? How can I rationalize the point that my gut wants to throw you in prison for the crimes I all but have proof of you committing, and yet…yet my heart…” Embarrassment and shame made him stop.
Light leaned over, gently putting a finger under his chin. Tilting it up slightly, he pressed his lips to his, another chaste kiss. “Who are we to feel this way? It doesn't make sense but then again…you've never been all that sensible.” He smirked, and instead of L huffing off as he'd been wont to do in the past when his strange habits were approached, he gave a small smile of his own.
The dark haired detective adjusted his position to where he was now sitting next to the brunette. He let out a sigh filled with relief, nervousness, and even a small tinge of fear. “So. Where do we go from here?” he asked, not particularly asking the boy next to him.
But Light seemed happy to answer. Tilting his head to the side, he let their lips meet for a third time. The interminable seconds ticked by. This was a bit too much, and L wanted time to clear his mind and think. He put his hands on Light shoulders, trying to push back and away, away to where he could regain his sanity.
Light wasn't having any of it, and brought his other hand around to the back of his head to stay him, pressing them together more firmly. He didn't know where the emotions had come from or when they had started, but they were out in the open now and he be damned if anything ruined what he'd been so patient for.
L's mind began to short out. Was it the lack of oxygen? It screamed for him to run, to be rational and not give in like this. The sensible choice was to build walls around his heart and never let his emotions show. It was safest that way. But now—oh gods. His heart skipped a beat as Light angled his head to deepen the kiss, making him give a soft sigh of want.
Light eagerly complied and slipped his tongue in to taste L's. He tasted sweet, not because of his sugary diet, but simply because, well, it was L. The one he had been secretly longing for…since shortly after they met? They were adversaries but even then the detective allured him.
Finally, Light pulled back, his breath now uneven, eyes full of an unfilled desire. L's face reflected the same emotions. But…were they going too fast? This was evidently new to both of them, though Light had said he'd dated before. But L had made him confess, those were just casual dates, none of them tinted with these heart-racing feelings that was now going on inside the pair.
So if that was how he felt, why was he standing up, Light's hand in his? Why was he leading him back to his room on the 26th floor of the building? And now…Light had captured his lips again in a passionate kiss, while at the same time pushing him down on the bed...
Then the touches stopped.
L opened half-lidded eyes. “Something wrong?” He hated that needy sound in his voice, so weak. He'd have to work on that.
Light pulled back to where he was sitting on his knees on the bed in front of L. “I…though we've known each other for over a year, this isn't…?” The question was obvious.
L sighed and ran a hand through his naturally wild hair. “I thought the same thing. But as you just pointed out, we're not new to one another, only to these…” Like Light, he found it hard to say his feelings so point-blank. He let the full intensity of his dark eyes shine upon the boy in front of him. “Nonetheless though. I'm ready,” he whispered.
Light blushed again and nodded. Slowly, he crawled over to where he was leaning over L again, their bodies pressed as he began their kissing again, this time more slowly and much more tender, savoring this moment in time.
L responded, opening his mouth more to allow Light's tongue to explore him. When theirs touched, L's body sent a bolt of electricity coursing through it. This was too new and too sweet. He was starting to have doubts of whether he could handle it.
Light's lips moved from L's mouth to his ear. He softly nibbled on the lobe, feeling the detective, give the softest of sighs, then licked the flesh. A hand grabbed his shoulder as L let out his first moan. Light captured his lips again, slipping his hands under the white shirt to feel more of the man's skin. Silky smooth. A thumb brushed a pert nipple and he squeezed it. L arched slightly off the bed as his throat unwillingly let out a harsh pant. His eyes rolled back in ecstasy as the brunette's hands continued their exploration of his body.
He couldn't remember when it had started, but soon he found himself completely unclothed. His mind started to remind him how unreasonable this was, they'd only confessed their love a short while ago—wait? Love? Was it too soon to call it that as well? L shook his head. There was definitely something there, even if it didn't have a specific name just yet. As he allowed himself to come back to the present, his breathing caught in his throat as he realized that Light was also undressed, now leaning over him…
The first brush of their uncovered bodies made L squirm. Light knew that since he'd been so anti-social that this was even more difficult for him than it was for himself. He trailed a finger down his face, then gave him a gentle kiss. Amber eyes met obsidian and the detective stilled under the soft gaze.
Another small kiss followed, then another. L closed his eyes, not wanting his logical mind to ruin these new feelings. Light kept up with the small, quick kisses, making his heart flutter. Those sweet lips left his and began to trail down to his chin…his jawline, another ear, each time bringing a soft gasp from his own lips.
Then Light ground their hips together. L gasped, then arched to meet him, needing more. “Yes…”
Light brought his lips back up to meet his soon-to be lover's, feeling as L fisted his hair in his intensity to have him closer. He spread the legs below him slightly for more access, then dipped his body again to rub their hips together.
This time, L moaned, a choked cry of need. His eyes closed again so as to lose himself in the pleasure of it all.
Light started up a slow movement, accompanied by feather-light brushes with his lips. His own body arched in desire, desperately wanting to take things further and much quicker.
“Ryu…zaki..” he panted, lidded eyes watching as the apparent lust played on the raven's face. Almost without thinking about it, he pushed himself against L even harder, wanting to hear more of those soft cries from before.
As he had hoped, L whimpered his name in a breathless heat. “Light…uhh…” He pushed his own body back against his, their bodies starting to move in tandem.
Light's own lips began to whisper incoherent words of longing, noticing that their brushing erections were becoming increasingly slickened with their pre-cum. Using one hand to hold L down by the shoulder, he used the other to lift one of the boy's legs up over his thigh. His thrusting became deeper, his voice coming in high-pitched moans that sounded foreign to him, but accurately showed the heat that was starting to bloom in his loins.
With their close contact becoming even closer, L was dangerously leaning over the edge of his orgasm. He pulled Light's lips to his in a savage kiss, then fully moaned again in his ear as another thrust brought him that much more near to his completion.
Light felt neither he nor L were going to last much longer. Releasing the raven's thigh, but keeping his hand on his shoulder, he slipped both of their aching erections in his hand, moving his hand up their shafts and over their slits, begging L to come with him.
“Oh gods, Ryuzaki…release…mmm…” His eyes closed and his head tilted back, knowing the other boy was just as close as he was.
L came first, a white light shattering all of his senses. Sharp nails clawed Light's back as his first orgasm ripped through his body, dragging an utmost heated cry of satisfaction as he finally undulated as his come covered Light's body.
The feel of L dissolving beneath him was too much for his senses, and Light let out a warning whimper before also succumbing to his release. Burying his face in L's collarbone, he rode out the wave of heat as it drained his entire body.
When at last their spasmodic thrusting subsided, Light slowly sat up, a small smile on his tired visage. “Well…wasn't that…pleasant.”
L blushed, still panting from the exertion. “Yes…agreed.” Gently, he pushed the boy from on top of him, but was happy when the brunette didn't' move fully away and instead grabbed his body. He snuggled into the raven, placing his head on his shoulder while draping an arm across his torso.
“I had told my father I was just taking a quick break from the investigation,” Light said quietly, yawning with the tiredness that comes after such bliss. “Some break this was! But…I'm happy that I did this…that we did this, Ryuzaki.” He looked at L with shining amber eyes.
L gave his own small smile, one that Light was becoming more content to see so often. “Yes, I am too.” He simply said, pulling the ruffled covers over their bodies. There was no telling what tomorrow would hold, but for now, he allowed himself to give way to the contentment of this perfect moment.
