Lyrics to Story: D'espairsRay - Garnet

Notes: Don't really know when this takes place, near the beginning I guess. I have no idea wtf this is, I had a couple of good lines in my head and didn't want them to go to waste.

When did I start to forget the pain,
and let my heart degenerate into ugliness,
and wither completely.

- D'espairsRay - Monokuro ni Natta Saigo no Hi

Raito was staring at the T.V. again. A bag of chips lay forgotten beside him, and a notebook and pencil lay in his lap. It wasn't the Death Note, it was just a regular pad and paper on which he could scrawl a name and rough face to remember for later. Ryuk stood beside him, his eyes glued to the wall but not really seeing anything. He was thinking.

A devil in disguise was the perfect description for him. Raito looked angelic; at least he used to. To anyone who hadn't been paying attention, he still did. But Ryuk, who knew everything about his plans, desires, hopes and fears knew that he was anything but an angel. His bright brown eyes had frozen over and narrowed into cold slits, seeing only death and possible destruction. His mannerisms had become even more quiet and secluded than before to the point of being almost hostile.

Humans were so weak, Ryuk mused. They were so susceptible to outside influences and they were weak to power. If someone had more power than them, they cowered automatically, without a second thought. And if they were offered power… then that was when they changed.

Ryuk's Death Note had seen a lot of owners in its time. Ryuk had seen even the most gentle, kind soul become corrupted because they had the power to kill anonymously at their disposal. But Raito was somewhat of a different case.

Raito hadn't been kind or gentle. He was incredibly intelligent, another characteristic Ryuk hadn't seen much in the other owners. At first, he hadn't assumed Raito to be easily affected by the offering of power, he hadn't assumed that Raito would accept the Death Note as being real so easily, and he definitely didn't assume Raito would be this much of a genius.

Ryuk's focus was shattered as Raito shifted on his chair and retrieved the Death Note from his desk drawer. “I've got six more people to kill. This should prove to everyone that the heart attacks really aren't a coincidence.”

Sometimes, Raito scared even him.
