Chapter 12: Eternal Flames of Dark and Light

By KellyQ

Tomoki slowly opened his eyes to feel as though someone had dropped a cement block on his head; but something didn't feel right ... like something was missing, he sat up and looked around to see that Izumi was not in the room but Junpei standing at the window, his shoulders shaking. Was he crying and where was Izumi. He turned his head to see (a few feet away) a pile of sand; amongst the pile was Izumi's green dress ...

"Junpei ...?" I asked walking up and looked up at the older boy indeed he had tears and he was clutching something to his heart.

"You better go check on the others ..." was all he could say keeping his eyes fixed straight ahead.

"I will. But what happened? Where's Izumi?"

"Come here my child." Came a voice.

Tomoki turned to see Kenchi walking up. He walked up as she bent down to one knee with a sad look in her eyes ...

"Tomoki ... when Kouji and Junpei shattered the ring it broke the curse ..."

"It did," the boy asked then turned to look back at Junpei and then realized that he was human, "it did! That's great. But where's Izumi?"

"When the ring was shattered it broke the curse sending Izumi and Takuya free ..."

"Free? I don't understand?"

"They're dead, Tomoki ..." Junpei said bluntly.

Kouichi slowly opened his eyes feeling an arm lightly brushing his hand. He turned his head to see the figure who just saved his life lying on his back unconscious. He looked like cross between a human and a Digimon spirit, just like his brother described, brown rich fur; flaming red bushy hair, elf like ears, black nose, a white scare that ran down from his upper chest beyond his red baggy pants. The dark haired twin slipped his arm under Takuya's head and brought his other hand over to the right of the red haired digimon's shoulder, gently shaking him.

"Come on. Wake up," he pleated still shaking Takuya getting no response, "you can't leave us ... not when my brother needs you ... please ..."

By know Kouichi was in the verge of breaking down ... he painfully closed his eyes as a tear escaped his eye. It trailed down his cheek and landed right on Takuya's heart. It didn't take long for it dry up causing his form to glow .... Kouichi looked down and his eyes widen ... there in his arms lay a tan boy, short brown hair that stuck out blow his ears and wearing nothing but a gray shirt, and white/gray baggy pants and black moccasins. Takuya opened his eyes ... they where a rich brown full of life ... there where now clouded over ... a smile spread across his face.

"We did it ---"

"Uh ... yes we --- No! You can't fall a sleep on us. Just try and hang in there --- long enough until my brother gets here."

His deep voice sent a chill down Takuya's spine ... he never heard a voice that sounded like heaven … the burnette took Kouichi's hand and tightened his grip and looked into the other twins eyes …

"Promise me that you wont leave your brother?"

"Of course not," Kouichi said, "I love my brother."

Takuya smiled and closed his eyes ….

The villagers stood at the dock, the ladies wore long dress the men wore nice sateen pants and white shirts … Junpei was the first to put the lantern on the water and poured the sand in the river. Putting the gar down, he put his hands together as his eyes closed.

"May this lantern guide you and keep you warm."

He clapped his hands a few times and got to his feet taking the gar in his hand as he rose. It was then Kouji's turn but didn't want to do it… he didn't want to part with the last thing he had left of Takuya. Kenchi put her long bony hand on his shoulder and tried to smile at him …

"You wanted to do a favor for what Takuya did for you and your brother?"

"We'll do it together," Kouichi said rubbing his brothers back hoping that the sensation would sooth him.

They both stepped up to the edge, Kouichi was the first to bent down. He took the lantern and placed into the river and gave it a gentle push. Looking at his brother, Kouichi rubbed his brother back …

"It is time."

With shaky hands, Kouji opened the gar and poured the sand in the river. Kenchi stepped up and bent down and put her hands together, her eyes closed.

"May this lantern keep you warm …"

"… And may the lantern keep burning, even to the darkest places."

The three clapped twice and rose to their feet as Kouji looked head, tears escaping from his blue eye there where now clouded over. Kouichi look sadly at his brother, he really wanted to Kouji's pain … but the only thing he could do was just be there for him.

"I'm ready to go home now."

"You go on head," Tomoki said, "I'm going to stay here to say a few words …"

"I'll stay with you," Kenchi said walking to the little boy.
