Chapter 1

"Hey, Kouji! Wait up!" Takuya called as he ran up to Kouji. "First day of school, you excited?"
Kouji shrugged as he held his school bag over his shoulder.
"Can‘t wait to join the soccer team!" Takuya said, clapping his hands together and grinning. Kouji shrugged again as they trudged along the sidewalk.
It had been quite a long time since they left the Digiworld and everything has basically gone back to normal.
The bell rang and Kouji and Takuya decided to run to school or else they’d be late. When something suddenly walked in front of them and they ran straight into him, knocking Takuya and the boy down.
"Oh, sorry!" Takuya said as he helped the kid pick up his school books.
"No, it is okay," he said. His voice had a weird sound to it, eerie almost. The kid had blue, black-ish short hair, a little bit falling in front of each ear and an abnormal sparkle to his eyes. "Um, see you around."
The kid turned around and started to run, even before Takuya could ask what his name was.
"Hm, weird kid," Takuya said.
"Come on, we‘re going to be late for school," Kouji said and Takuya nodded and ran off with him towards the school grounds.

At school, they had barely made it before the second bell and slid into the class right when it rang.
"Ah, Takuya, Kouji," the teacher said. "Nice of you to join us."
"Yeah, we‘re sorry," Takuya apologized, panting.
"My name is Miss Tasuke," she said and Takuya and Kouji bowed and sat down. When they looked up, they just noticed the kid they ran into standing in front of the class, blushing slightly.
"Hey, it‘s that kid again," Takuya said to Kouji.
"Takuya, I can see that," Kouji said coldly.
"Hey! Buds!" Junpei said from beside Izumi.
"We‘re in the same class again!" Izumi exclaimed, throwing them a thumbs up sign. Takuya returned the sign with his thumbs up and turned back to the teacher. Kouji ignored them, leaning his head on his hands.
The teacher introduced the kid as Kaji Tsubasa. He bowed appropriately and sat down in the front seat, right in front of Kouji. Kouji stared at him. He had seen that movement somewhere...how he sat down and bowed like that, but he couldn’t place it. The teacher’s loud, high voice snapped him out of his thoughts and took out his notebook as told.

"Hey, Tomoki," Kouji said, ruffling the kid’s hair. School was over and Kouji was walking home when he met up with Tomoki.
"Kouji!" he exclaimed, startled by the sudden ruffling of the hair. He embraced Kouji in a waist hug. Tomoki hadn’t seen Kouji for about four months since they had gotten back from the Digiworld.
"I missed you tons!" he said, finally letting go of Kouji finally.
"Same here, Tomoki," he said as they began to walk. Tomoki had moved from his house, closer to Kouji’s since they couldn‘t afford their old house.
Kouji felt sensed something coming, alert like a wolf, and glanced around but saw nothing. Then a something in the bushes, where the light bounced of something and saw a spiral of fire come out of a partings in the bushes. Without hesitation he pushed Tomoki one way and jumped the other, flattening himself against the wall, the fire barely grazing his back. Soon, the fire had gone and the hole in the bush was covered with leaves again.
"You okay, Tomoki?" Kouji asked, helping him up from the road. It was a good thing a car didn’t happen to come by.
"Yeah, what was that?" he asked, straightening his hat and picking up his back pack.
"I don‘t know," Kouji replied and at the moment, from behind the bush of which the flames had from, Kaji stepped out. Kouji glared at him as he stepped forward.
"Were you responsible for the flames?" Kouji asked irritably without delay. Kaji cocked his head at him innocently.
"Fire? I do not know what you are talking about," he said, scratching his head, eyes sparkling eerily.
"You know what I‘m talking about, you came from behind the bush right after it had happened!" Kouji exclaimed. Head still tilted to one side, looked at him.
"I am sorry, please excuse me, I do no know what you are talking about," he said, starting to walk across the streets and brushed past Kouji.
"Hello, Tomoki," Kaji said, stopping to pat him on the head. He walked around the corner and until a car came screeching to a halt in front of Kouji, they ran off the street.
"Stupid kids! Stay of the roads you juvenile hazards!" the man inside the car yelled, shacking his fist at them as he drove down the road.
"Who was that guy?" Tomoki asked. Kouji blinked at him. "I mean, the kid that patted me over the head. Not the guy in the car."
"Oh. His name is Kaji Tsubasa," explained Kouji, "a new kid in our class. Something‘s weird about him."
"Like what?" Tomoki asked as they began to walk towards their houses.
"I don‘t know...I just...know him some how, his movements are familiar to me," Kouji said, placing one hand in his pocket.
"I see what you mean," Tomoki said, "It seems like I‘ve met him too...and how did he know my name?"
Kouji shrugged, "that‘s another weird thing about him."
"And did you notice something weird about the fire?"
"...? No, my back was facing it," Kouji said. He had only cought a glimpse of it until he had pushed himself against the wall.
"It was black," Tomoki said and Kouji looked at him expectantly.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, it was almost black, red but tinted black," he said. "It wasn‘t ordinary fire I know that."
Kouji contemplated that for a moment but came up with nothing. Black fire? How could that be possible?
"Well, this is where I leave," Tomoki said after a period of silence. "I‘ll see you tomorrow morning."
He waved as he walked up his steps.
"Bye, Tomoki," Kouji said and hesitated before walking off.
Something about Tomoki’s house and Kaji gave off this weird sort of strange aura. Was there a connection with Tomoki’s house and Kaji? Kouji shook his head. No, he was being suspicious. Kaji was just a normal kid, and there was nothing wrong with Tomoki’s house. And that was that.
Kouji walked through his gate and up to the door. He absentmindedly looked around as if he were expecting someone to be spying on him.
"Hey, mom, I‘m home," he said, throwing his book bag onto the table on his way up. Ignoring the Coke commercial on the television.
"Hi Kouji," she said, peering around this corner. The sound of her knife cutting vegetables and hitting the wooden cutting board was heard from the kitchen. "What did I say about throwing your book bag on the table?"
"Sorry, mother," Kouji said and trudged back down the stairs. He slid his book bag off the table when he noticed something familiar on the t.v. He sat down on the couch and turned up the volume.
It was the fire he had seen earlier today.
"Weird flames have been appearing around the city," the reporter said, "so far, no one has been reported injured, but try and be on the look out for these mysterious flames. The flames have been said to be almost black instead of orange and red. Around the areas where the fire has said to been seen, witnesses have reported to have seen this boy. Some nearby residents have recorded this footage."
On the screen it showed a boy sitting on the fence, quickly darting out of sight. Kouji squinted his eyes, quickly popped in a tape and pressed record. Luckily, they showed the image again.
"The boy is unrecognisable..."
Kouji stopped the tape, rewound, pressed the play button and paused it when it showed the boy. He frowned and picked the phone up.
"Hello, Himi residents?" said Tomoki over the phone.
"Hey, Kouji here. Were you watching the news?"
"No, why?"
"I think Kaji‘s responsible for the flames, just like I hate expected."
There was no answer.
"Hello? Tomoki?"
The phone was dead.
