Chapter 2: Death of the Old Order
Marshal Annan was black, like his father and his grandfather. He was the Head of the UN Organisation, and the uniform he wore bespoke of its importance. Unlike that of the other UN soldiers, his uniform was white with black collar and cuffs. He looked at the UN Generals that sat before him. They wore uniforms that were similar to that of the EVA soldiers, only their uniforms were green with black collar and cuffs, instead of black with red collar and cuffs.
The Field Marshal sighed, running a gloved hand through his thinning grey hair- not that there had been much to begin with. This problem they were having had begun with his grandfather, or rather, when his grandfather stepped down from his position as Secretary General of the UN Organisation. A militaristic madman had then taken his grandfather's place, and militarised the UN. That had been the cause of the Third World War. The UN had attempted to take over the world, and had succeeded to some degree. To think, he and his old out-dated generals were now technically the rulers of the world, using the Head of States of each government as puppet leaders.
"Gentlemen," he began, addressing the soldiers around him. "I'm afraid we cannot start this meeting until General Kaplan arrives. If you would be so kind as to wait a few more minutes until his arrival, I would be very grateful. I thank you for your patience up to this current point."
One of the soldiers, a young General with blonde hair stood up.
"Marshal Annan, I fail to see why Kaplan is so important that we should delay the entire meeting just for him," shouted the young General. "We should continue with or without Kaplan."
"General McCarthy, with all due respect, this concerns the Leader of the EVA Organisation as much as you," replied Marshal Annan. "We shall wait for him." After all, how could they go about the discussion of de-armement if the Leader of the largest military organisation wasn't even there?
The WereLeomon fell to the ground, his shoulder bleeding. As he lay there, the fur on his body began to disappear and before long, all could see that he was a human with blonde hair. In fact, if you are a devote fan of the Digimon cartoon series, and you were there, you would see that not only was he human, but he also looked like a young version of Gennai.
"You monster," Fumiko accussed Dr. Yamaki. "How could you?"
"I'd be all too happy to give him medical treatment if you agree to stay here," stated Dr. Yamaki smugly. "However, if you choose to leave, then by all means, please do. No one is stopping you from leaving here. Though, without you, I might refuse to give him the medical treatment he needs to stay alive." She lowered her gun and placed it in its holster. "Well? What is your decision?"
Cody looked down at the human that had once been a furry WereLeomon.
"I don't know about you guys, but I feel we should stay," he sighed miserably.
"No way are we staying!" protested Fumiko angrily. "We have to get out of here while we still can."
"He's the one who helped us get free," argued Kai. "If it weren't for him, we wouldn't be out of that cell. We owe him one. I'm staying."
Fumiko looked up and then smiled.
"We can always get him to a hospital if we escape," she sighed. She glanced momentarily towards Yamaki. It didn't seem as if the pink-haired woman suspected anything. "Grab him and let's get out of here!" she shouted, as she tore the rifle away from Kai's hand, aimed it upwards and fired.
The ceiling came down and Yamaki screeched, as dust and ceiling fell all around her.
"Guards!" she screamed, as she dived out of the way.
Cody and Takeru ducked down and slung an arm around their shoulders, lifting Lt. Reynolds up. With him supported between them, they quickly made their way back down the corridor away from Dr. Yamaki.
Imagine Yamato Ishida. Now imagine that he cut his hair such that he looked like Quatre from the Gundam Wing Series and decided to bleach it, such that his hair was now a silver-platinum colour. Now imagine he was 21-years old. This guy, this guy that wore an EVA uniform looked exactly like that.
Now imagine Jeri from Digimon Tamers was approximately a year younger than him and had navy blue hair. This woman looked exactly like that, and the EVA uniform that she wore suited her somehow.
"Michael," began the Jeri look-alike, as they walked down the corridor of the base, past several windows that took up the wall to their left. "Do you ever wonder when the fighting will ever stop?" she asked him.
For a while, the silver-haired guy didn't even reply. He just walked on with an expressionless face. It was hard to tell his emotions, mostly because he kept that expressionless façade about him at all times.
"Bridgette, I don't think fighting will ever stop," he replied. "That's what General Kaplan believes anyway. In human beings, the will to fight is greater than anything else." He paused a while, stopping in his tracks. "I can see what his point is and even I am starting to believe in His Excellency's views."
"Surely you don't think it's impossible for us to achieve peace?" she asked him, stopping beside him.
"Not impossible as such," began the Lieutenant, "just difficult." He looked out of the window and north. He could just make out the skyline of the Italian city known as Milan. "Wars are created from inequalities, by differences. Until we can work at these inequalities and tolerate these differences, there'll be no chance for peace."
Bridgette sighed, rolling her eyes.
"You're beginning to sound like General Kaplan now," she stated. "You've been hanging around him too long." 'They are close though' she thought. 'Very close.' She turned round and looked out the window. The clear blue sky. The green trees outside the base. "It looks too beautiful," she muttered under her breath. "Looking out this window, you wouldn't think there was unrest in this world."
"Yeah," he agreed.
Kai didn't know whether to be shocked or impressed. The jeep was up and running, even without a key.
"So you know how to hot-wire a car," he said grumpily, his arms crossed in front of his chest. "Doesn't mean you have to drive."
"Doesn't it?" she asked in an innocent tone of voice, as she slipped into the driver's seat. "Are you getting in or what?" Fumiko asked him, glaring at him with an expression that could have sent chills down a snowman's spine. She watched as he jumped into the front seat beside her. Satisfied that he was buckled up, as were the three passengers behind her, she put her foot down on the pedal and drove towards the fence.
"Fumiko, you do know there's no gate in that fence, don't you?" asked Cody.
A smile spread across Fumiko's face.
"Well, I do have eyes," she replied, as she put her foot down on the gas and sped up. "Hold on to your stomachs, boys, 'cos we're going through!" With one cry, she drove the jeep through the fence, tearing through the metallic barrier. "Flimsy, ain't it?" she commented, as she looked behind her momentarily at the gaping hole in the wire fence.
Takeru looked behind him and saw spotlights shining through the night sky, as the entire military base came to life.
"They know we've escaped," he muttered under his breath.
"I don't believe we managed to escape in the first place," stated Cody, as he leaned back into his seat. "What are the odds of us managing to break through that fence? You'd think it'd be stronger than that, what with that being a military base and all."
"Who cares?" exclaimed Kai. "As long as we're free." He turned to face Fumiko. "Okay, pull up over there," he said, pointing to the side of the road, lined with trees. "Fumiko!" he shouted, when she didn't do as was told. "What do you think you're doing? We've got to ditch this thing and the uniforms!"
Fumiko sighed exasperatedly.
"If we do that, how are we going to get to a hospital in time?" she asked him. "We're making a beeline straight for the nearest town." She could see the lights of a city in front of her, and hoped that would do. "How's..." she began, but trailed off when she found she couldn't recall his name. She just motioned towards the wounded man.
"He's getting worse," replied Takeru with concern. "Wherever you're taking us, you'd better hurry about it."
"No problem," she said, as she stamped her foot down on to the gas, and they sped off down the road at what could have been deemed as unsafe speeds.
A Swiss flag flew from the pole outside the hospital, its lights glowing brightly in the darkness of the night. Surrounded by other buildings, it was a refuge in a sea of buildings.
A black military jeep with scratches all over its body, sped down the road and pulled up to the hospital entrance. Kai jumped off and helped Cody help Lt. Reynolds out of the jeep. He was just thankful they had time to dump their military tunics behind, and now looked less like EVA soldiers than they previously did. Slinging one of the Lieutenant's arms over his shoulder, he helped Cody carry the older man towards the entrace of the hospital.
"Already the people of the world are crying out that we of the UN are despots, old military generals who do not know what they truly want," said Marshal Annan, as he continued his speech. "We must show them otherwise by disbanding our own armies. True world peace cannot be achieved when there are weapons available to fight with," continued Marshal Annan, his gaze sweeping across the faces of each General present. "If we are truly to rid the world of fighting and suffering, first we must disarm our missiles, disband our armies and set aside our differences. In a world where there is plenty of resources for everyone, there is no need to fight."
General Kaplan smiled, a strange smile that didn't seem quite sincere in the way it appeared on his face. He had his eyes closed, as if he were half-asleep from Marshal Annan's speech.
"I cannot believe that people are so simple," he stated in a quiet voice that was loud enough for everyone to hear. "You do not seem to understand the will of the people. They fight, because they choose to fight. Greed, power, religion, even national pride are more potent causes for war these days and even in the days of your grandfather." He opened his eyes and looked towards the UN Leader. "Yes, like you, I do believe that we can achieve peace. However, I do not think that it can be achieved with such a simplistic way."
"And what do you suggest, General Kaplan?" Annan asked the Leader of the EVA Organisation.
"We should not disband the armies so hastily," began General Kaplan in a tone of voice that suggested that he thought it was the most obvious answer to that question. "Let us see what truly motivates the people to fight. Wars are caused by a complex web of events that lead up to fighting. It is necessary for us to study the events that lead up to war, and analyse these events, find out their significance for bringing about the fighting."
For a while, Marshal Annan did not say a thing. He just looked at Kaplan with a wary expression on his face.
"If I did not know better, Lord Kaplan, I'd believe that you were trying to stall the dismantling of your organisation," he said, addressing General Kaplan by his first name. "This is not the case, though, is it?"
"Of course not," replied General Kaplan, as glanced sideways towards the clock that hung on the wall behind the Field Marshal. His facial expression did not change, even though he allowed himself a moment of contentment.
"Gentlemen, I'm afraid our time here is up," announced Marshal Annan, as he looked at his watch. "We will discuss this further, after our inspection of the nuclear disarmement facility at Sellafield."
There was a collective of murmurs and speech, as the Generals rose from their seats.
As General McCarthy picked up his military cap from the table, he felt a hand rest on his shoulder.
"General McCarthy."
The blonde-haired General turned round.
"General Kaplan?" he exclaimed in surprise.
"I was very interested in the opinions you voiced earlier on today," began General Kaplan, allowing a friendly smile to spread across his face for once. "Apparently there is no room for all of you on the UN plane, so if you would care to join me on my private plane, I would very much like to discuss the issues of world peace with you."
McCarthy frowned. He was fully aware that the UN Plane, which had once been a troop-carrier before it was converted to hold passengers like a commercial flight, had enough seats for all of them. Something was up, but he couldn't quite understand what. Still, General Kaplan, the Leader of the EVA Organisation was inviting him to board his own private jet. It would have been rude to refuse the offer.
"Of course, Lord Kaplan," he agreed.
Dr. Yamaki smiled, as her two newest creations stood in front of her. One was a female with long brunette hair and brown eyes. The other was a male with brown eyes and blue hair (imagine Kazu with Joe's hair, and you'll have this guy described perfectly).
"Kari, Joshua, I have an important assignment for you," she said, as she tossed a folder on to her own desk. "Take a look at what's in that folder."
The male with blue hair, Joshua, walked up and picked the folder up, opening it up and looked in it. A frown spread across his face.
"You want us to..." he began, before he was abruptly cut off.
"Yes, I prefered it if you wouldn't shout that out loud," interrupted Dr. Yamaki. "What's in that folder is confidential and for your eyes only." She leaned back into her chair. "Go through with the mission and don't come back until you succeed."
"Of course, ma'am," agreed Joshua, bowing respectfully.
Even Air Force One wasn't anything like this place. General McCarthy thought that this private jet was a bit too fancy for its own good. Whoever, after all, heard of a chandelier within a plane? He sat in a chair facing General Kaplan.
"Commander Kaplan, why aren't we lifting off yet?" he asked the General, as he looked out of the window. "The others must be far ahead of us by now."
"We have to gain clearance first," replied the General mysteriously, as he leaned into his chair. "You are right though. The others are far ahead of us by now." A strange look came across Kaplan's face, as if he were lost in thought. "I'll go and see what the hold up is," he announced, as he got up from his seat. Walking away from General McCarthy, he didn't look back. "Captain Takenawa," he said, as she approached the woman in the burgundy military uniform, "please keep General McCarthy company."
"There they go," sighed Lt. Bridgette Hoffman, as she looked out of the window. The UN Jet was flying up into the air and gaining altitude fast. "Where's His Excellency's jet?" she wondered out loud.
"I'm not sure," replied Lt. Michael Reisz, as he stood beside her. 'What a way to spend this day off; watching the airfield' he thought to himself, as he looked out of the window.
Marshal Annan sighed, as he looked out of the window and at the clear blue sky.
"Such a wonderful day," he sighed. "Perhaps, if we can come to an agreement, on this wonderful day, all the people will be able to enjoy such wonderful weather for the first time in their lives since the end of the Third World War."
"Has anyone seen General McCarthy?" asked a General from behind them. "I can't seem to find him anywhere."
"Last I saw of him, he was with General Kaplan," came a reply.
Annan placed a hand thoughtfully on his chin, as he sat there, looking out of the window.
"I do so hope that today will be the day when the armies disband and all wars will cease to exist," he stated. He saw a flash of light from the corner of his eye, and turned round. "What on Earth is that?" he asked, and a few of the Generals looked out of the window.
"Seems like US Fighter Jets," came a reply. "Two of them. I thought they were dismantled after the end of World War Three."
"They must be from the American Liberation Front!" exclaimed one General.
Marshal Annan's heart raced with fear at the mention of that terrorist group.
"They're coming right at us!" he exclaimed in terror. His pupils widened as he suddenly realised what was happening. "Now, don't do anything rash!" he said, as if trying to speak with the pilots of the jet.
Seconds later, the jets were retreating and there was no more Marshal Annan.
"By assassinating the UN Leaders, the American Liberation Front has declared war on the UN Organisation and on the peoples of the Earth," crackled the voice over the radio, as Fumiko listened carefully. She couldn't believe what was happening. The girl was feeling conflicting emotions. One was joy, a joy that the fact that the tyrannical leaders of the UN Organisation had been destroyed. The second emotion was despair, as she realised that war was about to break out across the Earth. "We must not tolerate these enemies of justice and freedom," continued the voice.
"If they truly want war, then we will give it to them and eliminate them!" finished General McCarthy.
Capt. Mimi Takenawa nodded to him, a signal for him to stop. She reached out and switched the camera off. She smiled almost smugly, as she realised that the whole world now knew what the UN truly intended to do.
"That was well done, General McCarthy," commended Mimi. "General Kaplan would be very pleased."
Holding a hand to his forehead, McCarthy looked disappointed with himself.
"Are you sure that this is the best way forward?" he asked her. "I could swear that we would want to avoid war, especially with a terrorist group. Do we really want to repeat the mistsakes of the former US's Bush Administration?"
"Are you questioning His Exellency?" Mimi asked him. "You don't understand the loyalty to General Kaplan that all us soldiers have. He is much loved amongst our ranks. To question him is like blasphemy."
"I apologise, Lady Mimi," said McCarthy quickly, afraid to offend.
"As you should," said Mimi, as she motioned silently and discreetly to a soldier standing to the side. The floor underneath McCarthy gave way and the General fell out of the converted transport jet, screaming. Bringing out a gun, she aimed and fired, silencing McCarthy. 'We don't want to stain General Kaplan's carpet with blood, after all' she mused. She walked away from that area, as the platform rose back up, and into the front compartment where General Kaplan was seated. "Your Exellency, it is done."
A proud smile spread across General Kaplan's face.
"Good," he sighed in relief. "Now begins the second act, where EVA takes centre stage." He smiled. Everything had gone according to plan, like always. He was closer to becoming the undisputed ruler of the world, and there was no stopping him.
To be continued...
