Chapter 2 - Bel Air

It was raining again.

But fortunately, this time it wasn't the pouring rain they'd had for the past month, but the gentle, peaceful, light rain that happens after the worst part of a storm. The skies were still dark with stormclouds, and the air was still somewhat chilly, but it was warming up.

Daisuke let out a whoop and almost literally dove head-first down the stairs, skidded around a corner, and ran through the open door with a grin nearly splitting his face. Once outside, he twirled around, chocolate eyes dancing with glee, and let out another whoop.

People looked out of their windows and out over the cobblestone streets at the noise he made, and smiled when they saw a teenager so happy. Seeing a large puddle in the middle of the street, he looked both ways along the street, listened carefully, and grinned, before making a running leap into the puddle.

He got splashed all the way up to this hips.

He grinned, twirling around again and laughing loudly, before tilting his head back, closing his eyes, opening his mouth, and letting the sweet water fill it. He swallowed, then opened his mouth, swallowed, and did it again numerous times.

<i>*This*</i> was the kind of rain he loved. He loved rain; just not the heavy, relentless rain they'd been getting. <i>*That*</i> you couldn't go out in for five seconds without getting soaked to the bone.

But this... This gentle, calming rain...

It was his favorite type of weather.

"Daisuke! Come back inside!" his mother shouted from the third story window of their stonework house. "You'll catch a cold!"

He turned and waved at her, smiling brightly, eyes twinkling, but ignored the command. He was half-Elven; the Elven part of his blood made him immune to viruses and colds, so he didn't worry.

She frowned at him when he didn't move to follow her orders, but didn't press the matter. She knew just as well as he did that he couldn't catch a cold. Then she sighed loudly enough for him to hear her, and turned away to return to...whatever she'd been doing.

He grinned at that; he, having Elven blood, would always be victorious in a battle of wills with anyone who wasn't Elven. And the human blood in his veins came from her. Then he frowned; he had to think of something to occupy his time...

Then a nearby whinny made him grin, and one could almost see a lightbulb appear of his head. <b>{AN: Even if there ARE no lightbulbs in this world... <i>::sweatdrop::</i>}</b> Without hesitation, he darted down the street, jumping in puddles, dodging other people with an agility most had to envy.

Then he was at the town's stables, where anyone with a horse had theirs stabled. Grinning cheerfully, he strolled through the open door and into the barn itself, walking through the "halls" between stalls. <b>{AN: look mommy! I can RHYME! <i>::giggle:: ::choke:: ::cough::</i> riiight...}</b>

Then he smiled and sidled up to the wooden door of one of them. "Hey Keras[1]," he murmured, and the beautiful snowy head snapped up, liquid blue eyes staring at him in surprise. Then the mare whickered and lifted her head to nuzzle his cheek with a velvety nose. His smile widened, and fondly, he ran a hand down her long, graceful neck. "You beautiful thing," he murmured, and reached up to scratch behind her ears.

She made a sound almost like a purr, and leaned into his caresses, eyes closing in bliss. He laughed, and reached for the halter she was wearing, wrapping his fingers around it, and backed up so he could open the door to her stall. "Come on," he cooed. "We're going for a ride."

Her ears perked up as she heard the last, beloved word, and she whinnied, tossing her beautiful, stark white mane. She pranced in place for a moment, silver hooves chiming like bells on even the hard-packed dirt "floor" of the stables.

One would wonder why a half-Elf would even glance at her, beautiful as she was. One would wonder why he hadn't chosen another, one "more elegant" than she.

But no one without Elven blood would see the pure silver horn in the center of her forehead, or the fact that her hooves were *pure* silver and cloven, like a deer's. And they wouldn't know that, even though her fur was white and her eyes blue, she could hear every word he said.[2] And understand them.

No one knew she was no ordinary mare.

She was a unicorn.

He smiled at her, gazing fondly into her ice blue eyes. "Come on, sweetling, let's get this harness off you."

She nodded vigorously, whinnying eagerly.

Just then, as he was unbuckling the harness, a stable-hand waltzed into the room. He blinked in surprise, and frowned. "Sir, you can't do that," he informed him.

"Can't do what?" he asked, amused, not looking up. He knew what the problem was...

"She's a very special horse, sir," the man continued.

<i>|You have <b>*no*</b> idea how right you are,|</i> he thought, amused. The unicorn danced in place, whickering her amusement. <i>:He's an idiot,:</i> he informed her.

She nodded vigorously in response.

"I am well aware of that," Daisuke said out loud, looking up and grinning, chocolate eyes sparkling with amusement. "She's my horse."

The stable-hand blinked at him, eyes wide and mouth open in an "o" of surprise, before he flushed. "F-forgive me, Daisuke, sir, I didn't realize it was you," he stammered.

He grinned, knowing how the stable-hands here practically worshipped him. "Quite all right, Klahn, it's your job."

The flush deepened, and in a slightly awed, slightly panicked motion, he reached forward to re-buckle the harness. "Here, sir, let me-"

"No."

Blink. "Pardon?"

He smiled disarmingly. "I'm taking her out today," he replied. "<i>*Without*</i> harness and saddle. I'll go bareback."

The man's thick eyebrows creased in concern. "Are you sure that is wise, sir?"

He snorted. "I think I can handle it."

"All... All right..."

He smiled at that, knowing he'd won, and finished unbuckling the harness. He pulled it gently over her head, lifting the top part so it wouldn't get caught on her invisible-to anyone else, anyway-horn, and gently handed it to the stable-hand. "Thank you, Klahn, but I must be going now," he said, smiling.

And with that, he gently grabbed fistfuls of silky white hair and pulled himself up on Keras's back.

Then he nudged her gently with his heal, letting her know his urge to gallop through their mental link, and she reared on her hind legs, eyes glittering in glee, front hooves pawing at empty air. Then she shot through the halls at a slow canter, passing into a gallop when they left the stables, darting down the streets at full speed.

With agility and grace better than his, she darted and dodged people, and on one occasion where a cart appeared in front of them too suddenly for her to dodge, she <i>*lept*</i> over it, and Daisuke let out of loud whoop as the brief sensation of flying caused his adrenaline to shoot sky-high.

They ignored several indignant shouts at them, and the one city guard who had decided to stop them. He stepped in front of them, too quickly for them to dodge, and again, Keras used her powerful hind legs to send them flying over his head, leaving him there with his mouth open, eyes wide and blinking, and a hand held up to stop them.

Finally, they were out of city bounds, and into the Ghiran Forest, racing along the trails. He leaned forward, and pressed his face against the silky white fur of Keras's neck, smiling as he noticed the slight blue overtones.[3]

Suddenly, they broke out of the massive trees and into a field, and Keras reared off to the left. He smiled at that. <i>:Ah, so you knew where I wanted to go all along, hmm?:</i> he murmured into the back of her mind.

A mental rush of glee was his affirming reply.

He laughed softly, and sat up straighter as he heard the river nearing. <i>:Do you think he's there?:

:Mmhmm.:</i>

He grinned, then.

It'd been months since he'd last visited Veernith[4].

Abruptly, Keras was slowing down to a trot, and they stood gazing over a fifty-foot wide, crystal-clear river. On the other side was a large expanse of sandy beach, littered here and there with a huge boulder. It lead up to a large, gaping cave in the side of a sheer, granite cliff, the cave being big enough to fit half of the town he lived in, in it.

Slowly dragging his gaze up the cliff, he took in the beauty of it all, the way the cracked granite had gathered dirt with vegetation growing in it and hanging over the sides of the sheer drop-off, and how willow trees dropped their huge, heavy limbs over the edges at the top. It looked like a hanging garden, and the complete beauty of it never failed to steal his breath from him. To the left of the cave, ten feet away from it at most, a <i>*huge*</i> waterfall cascaded over the granite, ending in a large pool of water, which in turn poured steadily into the river.

He smiled then. "Come on, sweetling," he murmured. "I want to visit him."

With that, the unicorn plunged head-long into the swift currents of the river.

And even over the sound of the roaring waterfall, Veernith heard their plunge into the river. And a massive, iridescent blue-scaled head peered out of the cave from between two stalagmites and just to the side of a huge stalactite, so long it almost touched the floor. Crystal-clear, slitted blood red eyes darted around, finally settling on them, and the thin, clear, crystalline eye-membrane all dragons had slithered across the huge orbs. A rumbling greeting in the flowing, hissing Draconic tongue floated across the water to them, and gripping Keras's mane with one hand, Daisuke waved back across the river.

By the time they'd gotten to the other side, Veernith was already waiting on the sandy beach for them, curled around and over a large boulder, absorbing the warmth from the sunrays just now peeking hesitantly out from behind the clouds. His massive head was resting on clawed talon-like hands, each scale gleaming every shade of blue with the way the sunlight hit them. His tail, long and thick, ended in what looked almost like the fin of a mermaid, and was a deeper shade of blue than the rest of him; the "fin" at the end was a pale, shimmery sky blue.

He smiled at the huge dragon. "Hi, Veernith," he said warmly in the Draconic tongue, shaking himself off like a dog would. "What's up?"

Slitted, liquid scarlet eyes blinked at him, the dragon momentarily confused, before a deep, rumbling chuckle made the air tremble. "Besides the sky, you mean?" Veernith replied with a Draconic smile.

Daisuke laughed, nodding. "Yeah, besides the sky." His chocolate eyes twinkled with laughter, and he lifted a hand to scratch at his nose. "Ugh. Itch," he muttered, and loud, raucous Draconic laughter rolled through the air like thunder, accompanied by the twinkling of a unicorn's amused whinny.

The burgundy-haired boy sighed slightly. "So. Any news on the Kaizer?" he asked, eyes taking on a worried glow as he stared at the dragon.

The massive sapphire head shook from side-to-side. "Nothing important, anyway," he replied, tone turning serious. "Gordai[5] informed me that he received a new concubine, but other than that, nothing."

Daisuke's bronzed brow <b>{AN: LOOK! it's an alliteration!! <i>::bounce:: ::cough:: ::flush::</i> right. anyway...}</b> creased in thought. <i>|A concubine, hmm?|</i> He looked up, a grin on his face. "I just got an idea."

The crimson eyes blinked, before the thick, scaly brow creased. "Uh-oh. I'm not sure I like the sound of that," Veernith teased. "Daisuke thinking is never a good thing."
Pointedly ignoring the friendly jibe, Daisuke worked out a plan in his head. "Is the Kaizer always accepting additional servants into his palace?"

A scaled eyebrow rose in curiosity. "I believe so, yes," he replied after a moment.

Daisuke finally met the vermilion eyes, a triumphant smile on his face. "I think I just found us a way to overthrow the Kaizer before he rules all of Shyllia."

"All right, Daisuke. We're all here," Miyako snapped waspishly. "What's this brilliant idea of yours?"

Daisuke frowned at the violet-haired girl, but didn't comment on her vehemence. "We're all aware that the Kaizer is constantly adding new servants to his service, am I correct?" he began, raising an eyebrow at the group of ten (excluding him) in front of him.

Taichi blinked. "I am now," he muttered, looking bemused.

The burgundy-haired boy had to fight down a smile at that. "All right, now that we have that cleared up." He spared a grin at the older boy, who grinned back. "I came up with an idea," and seeing the look Miyako had on her face, added, "and Veernith agrees with me completely." He raised an eyebrow at the girl, who frowned, but didn't say anything. "He also worked it out with Gordai, who decided it was just crazy enough to work."

Miyako frowned, and glared down at the ground. "Wonderful," she muttered under her breath, which earned her a reproving cuff on the back of her head from Hikari. Daisuke smirked mentally. <i>|Thank you, 'Kari,| </i> he mused silently.

Daisuke pretended not to hear her comment, and glanced around the group. "I propose that one of us get into the group of people being sold to the Kaizer, and get put into one of his ranks of servants." He raised his eyebrow again. "Now, it's not fully formulated yet, which is the other reason I called you guys here." He paused, letting it sink in. "Any comments?"

To his surprise, it wasn't Miyako who answered.

Yamato looked up and nodded sharply. "I like it," he replied instantly.

Daisuke blinked, startled. "Oh. Well, then. Anyone else?"

Koushiro was frowning thoughtfully, inward-turned eyes fixed unseeingly on the floor in front of his shoes. "I think it should work well," he said after a long, silence-filled pause that had made Daisuke twitch nervously; he never <i>*had*</i> been able to stand silence. "Provided you have a means of communicating any information on him you discover to us." He shrugged. "The only problem I can foresee is knowing which sector you'll be placed in, and what kind of work you'll be performing."

Daisuke shrugged. "It all depends on what he chooses, I guess. Whoever we choose will have to report the job he or she gets in the first communication they send."

Koushiro nodded, and then glanced at Jyou. The dark-haired boy looked up and stared curiously at Daisuke. "Now that we have that established, exactly who did you have planned to go on this... 'trip'?"

"Actually... I'd thought maybe I could go."

He waited for the outburst that was sure to cause.

And had to repress a smile at how several of his friends exploded.

"ALL RIGHT!!"

Everyone fell silent, startled.

He glared around the circle of teenagers, meeting each and every person's eyes. "I feel this way because I am the only one, besides Koushiro and Jyou, who doesn't have a lover who'd be upset that I'm not here, but in the Kaizer's palace for an undetermined length of time. But Koushiro and Jyou are the most intelligent of us besides Iori, and thus are needed with you guys to work through any other plans we've got."

Koushiro was again thinking this over, but Miyako had no qualms in expressing her opinion.

"<i>*YOU*</i>?!" Her voice was shrill with disbelief. "The reason we should have either Koushiro or Jyou go is because they are <i>*intelligent*</i> and aren't impulsive!" she snapped. "You are <i>*both unintelligent and <b>very</b> impulsive*</i>!"

Daisuke smiled tightly at her. "Thank you, Miyako, for your unasked for opinion on my intelligence," he murmured softly, voice tight and controlled.

Yamato cleared his throat suddenly. "Sorry, Miyako, but I've got to agree with Daisuke. He should go."

The chocolate-eyed boy had to hold back a snicker at the gape-mouthed, landed-fish look Miyako adapted at that moment.

Koushiro and Jyou both nodded. "We both agree, also."

Daisuke, smiling slightly, raised an eyebrow at the rest of the group. "Anyone else?"

No one said a thing.

He grinned. "Okay! So now we just have to decide when I'm leaving." He raised an eyebrow at everyone.

"Immediately," Iori said instantly, eyes lighting with a smoldering fire. "The sooner you get there, the better, because the sooner we can get this over with."

Daisuke's eyes hardened slightly as he stared at Iori. "You mean the sooner you get rid of me," he said softly, smiling bitterly at the flabbergasted boy. "Nah, don't worry about it. Maybe someone there will actually appreciate me."

Then he stood up and left.
