Chapter 3 - Mom, Dad, Do You Love Me?

A man walked into the apartment in the late afternoon. He looked tired and was probably headed to rest in this bedroom when he turned his head and was surprised to find Tai, Joe, Tentomon, and Izzy there.

He blinked. “Hi boys,” he said in an exhausted manner.

Everyone exchanged their greetings to Mr. Izumi and he continued with a smile. “You guys working on a school project?”

Izzy nervously looked away. “Actually, dad… I need to tell you and mom something.” he said in a small voice. He raised his head to meet his father's confused face. “It's really important.”

Masami Izumi looked concerned for a moment, then smiled through his obvious fatigue. “We'll wait until your mother gets home, then.”

A few minutes later Mrs. Izumi graced her presence through the front door. She didn't look nearly as tired as her husband.

She smiled sweetly at the boys and Digimon in the living room. “Hi boys!”

She turned forward again to be greeted by her husband, who kissed her forehead lightly. “Izzy says he has something important to tell us,” he said once he broke away, as if it were a passing comment.

“Oh?” she looked surprised as she headed over into the living room, Joe giving up his chair to her. Mr. Izumi sat in a different chair close to his wife, Joe standing near one end of the couch that Izzy and Tai were sitting on together.

“So, what's going on, Izzy?” his dad said, leaning forward intently for the news.

Izzy's face blushed again as he looked down at his feet. He sighed quietly to himself.

“Mom, dad, do you love me?” he asked in a serious and concerned voice, looking back up to see their reactions. His parents looked startled and turned to face each other for a short moment, then turned back to face their son.

“Of course we do, Izzy, we love you more than anything in the world,” came Mrs. Izumi's reply.

Izzy sighed a relieved happy sigh, a smile creeping to his lips through the nervous expression he held. He looked back down at his feet again and sighed heavily, his blush darkening.

“I have something… to tell you…” He looked up at them again, his eyes clouded with hurt. He looked so small sitting there, like a child, fragile and scared.

His mother looked a little frightened while his dad creased his brow in a serious manner.

“Izzy?” his mom asked, her voice uneasy.

His breathing started to become unsteady as fresh tears drew themselves down his heated face. He looked down at his arms in despair. His father blinked in astonishment and his mother gasped faintly. Tai placed one hand on Izzy's back comfortingly.

After a painful broken sob filled the quiet room, Izzy moved his gaze up to his parents again.

“Mom… dad…” he hesitated, emitting struggled partial words. “I'm…” He held his head down and with a sigh, forced himself to look back at them. “…I'm gay.”

His parents leaned back in their chairs, completely amazed.

Izzy sighed and gazed downwards again. “I'm sorry, I've always felt -“ he left off as he looked up quickly to see his dad storm out of the room, anger apparent on his face.

“Dad?!” Izzy cried out desperately, his shout immediately followed by the loud slam of his parent's bedroom door.

Tai and Joe looked shocked to say the least, their mouths hanging open. Tentomon blinked in confusion. Mrs. Izumi groaned and got out of her chair.

“I'm sorry Izzy, I just can't talk to you right now,” she said, her words trailing in the air after her. She waved her arms in dramatic despair.

Izzy, wide eyed and filled to the brim with hurt, chased off after her into the kitchen.

“Mom?! Why won't you talk to me?! You said you loved me!” he desperately forced her to listen.

“Izzy, just, go away right now,” she said in frustration, pinching her forehead in thought with her eyes closed, her other arm hugging her waist.

“Go away?! GO AWAY?! Where?!” he belted out at her, his body starting to tremble.

“Anywhere! I don't care, just GO!” she shouted back, her feminine voice straining. Her arms were straight against her sides with her hands balled tightly into fists.

Izzy furiously tried to calm himself down. “Mom, I -“ he left off abruptly as his head snapped to the side the second Mrs. Izumi reached out and bitterly slapped him across the face.

His eyes were wide and filled with absolute shock and hurt, his cheek throbbing lightly and turning red. He could have sworn he heard three gasps from behind him somewhere, but he was distracted by his mother's angered and ragged breathing.

He slowly turned to face her, hot tears beginning to stream down his face, burning the abused spot on his cheek. Her face was filled with frustration and she was clearly pissed off.

Without thinking, he shoved his left sleeve up to bunch helplessly at his elbow and thrust the inside of his forearm at her. She tried to leave the room then, but was frozen with the sight of deep red cuts on her son's left wrist.

She didn't even get a chance to react when Izzy's face twisted in an upset and angry manner. “You see this? THIS is what I've been doing! I've been doing this because of YOU!” The words spewed forth fiercely.

“Iz -“ she began before her son cut her off.

“I have been cutting my wrists! ON PURPOSE! All because of what you would say when I TOLD YOU! Because of YOU!” he spit out the words hatefully, angry tears flowing down his face.

She blinked in amazement and shook her head from side to side forcefully. “I need some time to think,” she retorted, then maneuvered around him and out of the kitchen, passing Tai, Joe and Tentomon without a care. She joined her husband in their room and slammed the door behind her.

Izzy sank to the floor, defeated. He began to sob painfully.

His friends ran over to him and leaned down.

Tai clutched a violently shaking Izzy to his body, holding him tight. Joe placed a hand on Izzy's head, his hand bobbing up and down with his sobs. Tentomon moved to stand in front of Izzy, lightly placing one of his large silver claws on his human partner's knee.

Joe spoke softly and soothingly after a few minutes. “Izzy, you can stay at my place for a few days until things calm down.”

Izzy heard him, but couldn't seem to manage anything other than bawling his eyes out at the moment. Tai spoke for him. “I'm sure Izzy greatly appreciates that, thank you.”

After a while, Izzy's sobs slowed down from loud painful piercing to quiet discontented crying. He wiped his eyes with the back of one hand and leaned away from Tai's grasp.

“You okay now, Izzy?” Tai asked concerned, one arm wrapped loosely around his back.

“Yeah… I'm okay,” he whispered, barely audible. Tai took his hand and led him to stand up. Joe got up too.

“Let's go pack some stuff for you for a few days while you stay at Joe's place,” Tai said mildly. Izzy nodded and they headed off to his room to pack.
