History of a Dragon
Chapter 1: Birth of the Dragon

My name is Ryu Katsumaru. Considering my current condition I should probably tell you how I got this way. It started when I was nine years old. I still remember it. I awoke to the smell of something burning. I went into the hall outside my bedroom. We lived in a large house but not mansion. There were four bedrooms. I went to the top of the stairs and looked down. It was like looking into Hell itself. Fire was everywhere. I knew I had to get out. I also knew that I couldn't jump from a second story window, at my age, and expect to come out of it in one piece.

I made my way down and started calling for my parents. There was no response. Even my nine year old brain knew that they were already dead. Somehow though calling out for them was comforting. Then I heard the creaking. I looked up just in time to see a cross beam give way and come crashing down. I closed my eyes and surrendered myself. Then I felt something pick me up. I looked around and saw that I was wrapped in a comforter.

“Survive. Live. Exist. Ryu,” the person that was carrying me said.

I recognized my fathers voice. Event though his lungs were damaged by the smoke and heat, I could still recognize him. Then I felt weightless for just a second then hit something. The barrier gave way with a crash and I felt myself hit something else. I rolled and the comforter opened. I was on my hands and knees when I saw it. It was like looking into the sun. I couldn't see anything but fire. The heat was so intense that I could barely stay were I was almost twelve feet away.

The Fire Fighters arrived after I'd stopped crying. They tried putting out the fire but soon gave up. There wasn't much they could do against that inferno. The Paramedics checked me out. I don't remember anything of what was said. The shock of losing my home and my parents was a big hit. My grandparents showed up and took me home with them. Their house was smaller but not much. Not much happened for the next few years.

It had been three months since my birthday. I'd turned eleven and had the usual party. I'd grown slightly rebellious over the years. My grandparents took it in stride. They understood what I'd been through. No one else seemed to get it. My teachers gave me a hard time. Partly because my hair is red, partly because the school uniform is blue and I wear black. This day was different. I was sitting in detention, again. I looked out and saw a couple of kids having a friendly duel with their digimon. Digimon had become more common over the years.

I found myself wishing I had a digimon myself so I could find out who it was that burned my home to the ground. I was so focused on my anger that I didn't notice the glow from my jacket pocket. It was dark before I got out of school. You know how winter is, short days, long nights. Little did I know that this night would be different. I started looking through the digimon cards I'd collected over the years. That's when I saw the strange blue card. I put my cards away and I heard something hit the ground.

What I saw was a strange device. It was black with a red rubber grip on the right side. There was a slight protrusion from the left next to this screen. The protrusion had a slit so I thought it was probably a reader of some kind. The screen was lined with red and there were three white triangles that pointed toward the screen. There was a white clothe strap that was clipped to the device. I decided I'd see what this blue card could do.

There was a flash as I slid the card through the reader. I shielded my eyes and when I looked I saw him. The digimon I'd created to help me exact my revenge on the person responsible for my parents death. He stood six feet tall. He walked on his back legs. Black scales covered his body. His underbelly had red scales. White curved spines ran down his back and tail. A pair of white horns went from the back of his long head. His yellow eyes reguarded me calmly. His three clawed hands and feet looked like they could take my head off with one clean swipe.

“Drakemon,” I said smiling.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“My name's,” I wiped away the tears as they weld up, “I'm Ryu. I'm your tamer.”

“Don't cry.”

He reminded me so much of my father. When we made it home I introduced Drakemon to my grandparents. I guess the look on my face was what made them let me keep him. My grandparents weren't big fans of digimon. The next day Drakemon slept in a tree while I was in school. After school we took on this kid that I went to school with. He had a Renamon. When he saw Drakemon he was more then a little intimidated.

“Show them what you can do Drakemon!” I shouted, maybe a little too eager to see just how powerful Drakemon was.

“Fire Breath!” Drakemon shouted launching a fire ball at the REnamon.

The attack was dodged easily.

“Diamond Storm!” the Renamon shouted launching several diamonds at Drakemon.

Drakemon swatted them away then snorted making small bits of flame shoot from his nose.

“Ryu. Why do I have to fight this weakling?” Drakemon asked looking at me.

“Weakling? I'll show you,” the Renamon's tamer said pulling out a card.

“Renamon digivolve to…Kyubimon,” the fox said changing into it's more powerful form.

“Please. Drakemon could still take you on,” I said the pride in my creation giving me a big head.

“Dragon Wheel!” the fox shouted jumping into the air and doing a flip.

The attack hit Drakemon sending him skidding back. He clutched his chest and growled. I was shocked to see my dragon moved at all. I pulled out my own digivolution card and slid it through. I knew what was in store for my opponent.

“Drakemon digivolve to… Lungmon,” Drakemon changed himself.

He was on all fours. His body was long. Each foot had four claws. His body was yellow with white underbelly scales. He growled and I couldn't help but smile.

“Dragon Lightning!” he shouted as lightning went shooting from his mouth at the fox.

“What was that?” the other kid was obviously shocked.

“Don't you know. Eastern dragon's are the rulers of the rivers and storms. The control Lightning and Water,” I said crossing my arms and smiling.

I knew there was no way he could beat me now. Then he did something that I hadn't expected.

“Kyubimon digivolve to…Taomon,” his fox changed again.

This ultimate version was something that I hadn't expected. Then I remembered a rumor I'd heard not long ago. There was supposed to be a kid that could have his digimon go to Ultimate level. That was unheard of for kids our age. The older kids, teenagers mostly were supposed to be able to do it. Almost all kids could biomerge. However, most kids didn't fight when they weren't at school, and the schools didn't allow biomerging.

“What do I do?” I was getting nervous now.

I knew what Taomon was capable of. A wide variety of things, that's what. I couldn't do much. Then something made me pull out the blue card. It had created Drakemon so I didn't know if it was good for much else. I pulled out my digivice, I didn't' know what this model was called, and slid the card through. Boy, did I get a surprise.

To be continued…
