CHAPTER4
~Odaiba Regional Hospital~
~Takeru's POV~
Takeru was feeling pretty good despite the numerous aches and bruises he had. The pain pills they had him on were doing a good job of taking the edge off of everything. He was currently hobbling his way down a hallway towards Dai-chan's room with his mom, but he was not making as much progress as he could have been because every time he meet a member of the staff they wanted to stop and give him a few encouraging words and/or a hug. Apparently the two boys had sometime in the last week become the resident sweethearts of the hospital. Takeru had been thinking about what that one nurse had said the first night Daisuke had woken up and after many hours of mental turmoil, he had come to the conclusion that she was right. Sometime during the last few years of competing with Daisuke for Hikari's affections he had begun to fall for the courageous red-headed fire-brand and the feeling had slowly without his noticing grown into love. Now he just had to convince Dai-chan that his feelings were true. He already knew that his friend felt something for him and hopefully he would remember those feelings in spite of the bout of amnesia he was suffering from.
Finally the mother and son duo came within sight of Daisuke's room. Takeru broke out of his thoughts and glanced curiously at his mother who was smirking.
“Do I even want to know what you're thinking about?” he asked her quietly.
“Oh I was just noticing yours and Daisuke's fan club, that's all.”
“Yeah, well…”
Mrs. Takaishi gently hugged her battered son before letting go and opening the door to Daisuke's room.
~Daisuke's hospital room~
Daisuke was lying in bed trying to read a book, god yes I'm that bored, when somebody knocked on the door and Takeru's mom peeked inside.
“Hey, Mrs. Takaishi, please hurry inside and entertain me before I go crazy.”
Takeru came over to the bed and eased himself down into the chair his mom pulled up by the head of the hospital bed “so Dai-chan suffering from cabin fever already?”
“Yes! I've become so bored that I'm even trying to read a real book. On top of that the school sent me the work that I've missed while I've been in the hospital but I don't remember going over half this stuff. I look at it and I draw a big blank. This is so frustrating having these holes in what I remember from the last couple of months. Some things are starting to come back but it's happening so slowly. I will remember doing something but I don't remember why I started it or how it turned out, the nurses and doctors tell me that it's good that I'm already beginning to remember things but that doesn't help my frustration any. And to top it all off my arm itches and these stupid ribs hurt” Daisuke finished ranting.
Takeru chuckled lightly to keep from aggravating his own broken ribs “yeah, I'd say Dai-chan's feeling better if he can get up enough energy to raise that kind of fuss. The three of them continued to banter together with Daisuke tell about some of the funny things the nurses and other patients did and Ms. Takaishi told the two boys about some of the things going on at the office including the story about the intern and the secretary who were caught with their pants around their ankles, literally, by one of the more conservative middle managers. This would not have been too uncommon except for the fact that the two in question were both guys and the manager was completely anti-gay. He had wanted them fired immediately but cooler, more liberal, heads further up, had merely given the two a reprimand and moved them both to different departments. The two boys had a good laugh when Ms. T had related to them the look on the mangers face when he finally realized just what he had walked in on. “Well Daisuke I hope I have helped entertained you enough for one day. I have to run to work now so you two be good and Takeru, Yamato will be around to pick you up this afternoon. Ja ne!”
The two boys talked for about another hour before Takeru worked up the courage to breach a topic that he had been pondering since the day Daisuke had woken up from his coma. “Dai-kun there is something important that I do need to talk to you about” Takeru began nervously.
Oh no, he is finally going to tell me to shove it and that he is getting back together with Hikari and giving up on this whole being gay thing, and he will be right. Hikari was right, just look at how much he has suffered because of me, I don't deserve to be with someone like him, but I won't cry when he tells me. I will wait until he leaves and then I'll cry my heart out. “O-Oh okay.”
Takeru, oblivious to Daisuke's sudden nervousness continued to vocalize his thoughts. “I don't know if you remember this or not but we decided soon after we both came out that it would be best if we didn't date anybody right now what with all the trouble Hikari and Miyako would stir up at school. I can't do this any longer though; Dai-chan I like you a lot, heck I think I could even say I love you, so I was wondering if maybe you'd like to go out with me after we're both relatively healthy again?”
Daisuke was speechless. This was not at all what he had been expecting. He thought that Takeru would leave his sorry ass alone again and get back together with Kari. He never in a million years would have predicted Takeru asking him out, while they were both in a hospital room no less. “I…I…I… yo-you're not leaving me? Don't you want to get back together with Kari and be happy? Af-after all it's because of me that you got beaten up.” A hand gently covering his mouth finally stopped Daisuke's rambling. He then merely sat in quietly growing hope as Takeru began addressing each of his questions.
“I don't ever want to leave you; I know what your life has been like up till now with your parents being away all the time and Jun always away at school. As for Hikari, she and I were never that happy together, at least I wasn't. I was only dating her because everybody expected it. And we were beaten up because some group of idiots can't accept the fact that the world doesn't revolve around them and their beliefs, not because of anything either of us did or didn't do. It wasn't my fault, and it certainly wasn't your fault so I don't want to hear you say that ever again. Now I'll ask again, Dai-chan I love you would you consider being my boyfriend?” Takeru asked with a hopeful look on his face.
“I-If you think you can put up with me th-then yes I absolutely for real want to start dating you. After all you're the reason I decide that I was definitely gay” Daisuke confessed. “I have been in love with you for a while now and I'm sure that I will love you for a long time to come.”
Takeru looked ecstatic as he listened to Daisuke's decision but suddenly he frowned “dammit all,” he said quietly which caused Daisuke to suddenly frown and feel nervous. Takeru seeing Daisuke's expression verbalized the thought he just had “this is the part were the happy couple usually shares their first kiss, but I don't think either of us are that maneuverable yet so… will you take a rain check on that kiss?”
Daisuke looked at Takeru for a few seconds before he busted out laughing which caused him to strain his damaged ribs bringing the laughter to an abrupt halt. When he could speak once again he glared at Takeru “no more making me laugh until these ribs are healed or the engagements off, oh and you're wearing the dress.”
Takeru just stared at his Dai-chan, dumbfounded.
~Later~
Daisuke and Takeru spent the rest of the morning talking about various things the way they normally did. When lunchtime came the nurse thoughtfully brought Takeru up a plate from the cafeteria since he had so much trouble moving around. About an hour after they finished eating they were still joking about hospital food when the doctor came by.
“So Daisuke how are we feeling today?” the doctor asked as he perused Daisuke's chart. “I see that everything looks normal. We're going to run you down stairs for another set of x-rays later and if everything looks good I think we can let you go home tomorrow.”
“That sounds great; I was telling Takeru this morning I thought I was going to go crazy from cabin fever before long.”
The doctor checked the red-head's injuries himself and then with a few more encouraging words he moved on to another patient. Daisuke's mom and sister came in just as the doctor was leaving and everybody's attention was again turned back to keeping Daisuke entertained. They were informed about Daisuke and Takeru deciding to take their relationship to the next level to which they both received the two female's congratulations and Jun's stern warning for Takeru not to hurt her baby brother or she would hurt him. After that warning was given Daisuke quipped “I think you just received your official big sister talk” followed by muted laughter from everybody. Takeru countered “well just you wait until Yamato hears about this; if you think Jun is over protective Yama is at least twice as bad.” This was followed by the two boys complaining about older siblings and their over protective tendencies.
At two o'clock a nurse came by to take Daisuke down to the x-ray lab. Takeru and the Motomiyas kept up the easy conversation while they waited for Daisuke's return. When he was brought back to his room, instead of placing him back in his bed immediately, it was decided that Daisuke should go ahead and take his afternoon walk up and down the halls. Jun and his mom accompanied him, one on either side to catch him in case he had a dizzy spell. On his first day up and about he'd had several such instances during his walks, but yesterday he'd had none and appeared to be walking much easier. Hopefully the same would be true today. Takeru having sat in the same chair all morning grabbed his crutches and hobbled along behind the trio stretching his own muscles and easing some of the stiffness he felt.
Upon returning to his room Daisuke was given a painkiller and promptly feel asleep from exhaustion. Takeru took one of his own pills and he too was soon slumped back in his chair sound asleep. Mrs. Motomiya and Jun left to make arrangement for bringing Daisuke home but only after they had carefully placed blankets around both boys to keep them warm in the slightly chilly hospital room.
Yamato and Jyou arrived an hour before visiting hours ended to find the two boys still asleep though now Takeru had his head pillowed on the side of Daisuke's bed and the two boys each held the others hand in a loose clasp. Yamato wished for a second that Hikari was there to take a picture but remembered that she was no longer on speaking terms with the rest of the digidestined. It saddened him to think that she and Miyako were willing to end so many long term friendships simply because of the gender of the people her friends loved. The older blonde and his boyfriend sat on the small couch over by the window and talked softly while they waited to see if the two boy's would wake up on their own before it was time for them to leave.
The sound of voices intruded upon Takeru's sleep and as he came partially awake he unconsciously tightened his grip on Daisuke's hand bringing the other boy awake as well. Noticing that they once again had visitors the two younger boys' stretched as much as their sore ribs would allow. They spent a few minutes chatting and informing the older couple about their new relationship upon which Yamato, as predicted, gave Daisuke his own version of the big brother speech. The two younger boys broke out in soft laughter and when they saw the expression on the older blonde's face they laughed even harder despite the ache this caused in their ribs. After calming down, they explained to the older boys about Jun's similar speech, and they once again began making fun of their over protective siblings, this time to a new audience. Jyou laughed along with them while Yamato simply looked disgruntled at being made fun of.
Soon though it was time for the three to leave and after Daisuke and Takeru said their goodbyes and Takeru made Yamato and Jyou promise to drive him over to Daisuke's house after he got home the next day so they could hang out and watch movies. When the two older boys agreed the trio walked to the elevator and then out to Jyou's car.
~Monday morning~
Takeru and Daisuke were both to return to school Monday morning and Yamato and Jyou had to get up early to drive the two injured teens there. Daisuke was able to climb out on his own while Yamato helped Takeru out. After grabbing Takeru's crutches Yamato closed the car door and escorted the two inside while Jyou went to find a place to park.
Yamato left the two invalids' at the front door as he made his way to his own locker. Daisuke and Takeru were soon surrounded by a group of female admirers who insisted on helping the two boys' with everything. Much to the shock and envy of several of the straight boys, the girls insisted on helping carry the two's books and copying down their notes in class. Markers soon appeared and many people signed the boys' cast, and when the two teens' announced that they were officially a couple the girls went ecstatic and talked almost constantly during classes about how perfect they were together and what a cute couple they made.
Takeru finally got a few minutes alone when, during one class, he received permission to go to the restroom. It was on the trip back that he met Hikari who was running an errand for a teacher.
“Hi Take-chan, how are you feeling. I was worried sick when I heard that you were in the hospital. I would have come and visited you but things kept coming up” she said as she slide in closer to him. “I miss you, you know. I was hoping that we could get together and talk things over between us.”
Takeru could not figure out why but being this close to his ex-girlfriend was giving him the creeps for some reason. “Daisuke and I will be staying around each others places for a while since we aren't very mobile right now. If you want to come over and hang out with us then I guess you could stop by his apartment this afternoon and apologize to him for those nasty things you said to him. After all neither he nor I are the type to hold grudges so once you apologize we can go back to being friends.”
“But I don't want us to be just friends” Hikari said while trying to latch onto Takeru's arm despite his being impaired by his crutches. “I want us to go back to the way things were before Daisuke's stupid announcement. I want to be your girlfriend again and for us to go out on dates and do the stuff happy couples normally do.”
Takeru didn't want to get into this discussion with Hikari right now but it looked like there would be no avoiding it. “I guess you've missed the gossip circle today, Daisuke and I are officially a couple since yesterday morning. You and I aren't meant to spend the rest of our lives together as a couple; now that we've been apart for a while I realize that. I love you yes, but more like a sibling than as a mate.” Takeru had been purposely avoiding looking at Hikari during his confession so he missed her expression of shocked denial. When he finally did look up he saw her face take on a hateful glare as she began shrieking at him.
“NO, NO, NO you are not gay, do you hear me. I don't know why you feel the need to make me jealous like this but you and Daisuke need to stop this game right now before both of you get hurt worse. If you keep this up I'm sure something awful will happen to you.”
Takeru got a suspicious look on his face and tried to confront Hikari about what she had just said. “Why would you say something like that, what do you know?”
Hikari realized that she might have said too much and feinted to try and allay Takeru's suspicions. “Well I have the proof right here before me with your injuries, which were caused by a group of boys who do not take kindly to people calling themselves faggots. And I have heard that several churches and groups in town have taken issue with all the gay activity here on campus.”
“Do any of these people include you and your family? You're no different from the way you were several weeks ago. You don't want to be mine and Dai-chan's friend because you can't accept us for who we really are, you're to busy living in your fantasy world were everything revolves around you and what you want. Well wake up little girl because the reality is that I do find boys sexually attractive and I'm in love with Daisuke Motomiya. When you think you can get over your prejudices and join the rest of us in reality then come find me and apologize, until then stay out of my sight.” With that Takeru hobbled back to his classroom feeling drained and very depressed.
~Lunchtime~
During the lunch break Iori and Scott came over and sat with Daisuke and Takeru. He formally introduced the two to his new boyfriend and congratulations were given all around. The talk soon turned to mundane things and Daisuke and Takeru enjoyed being back among friends.
“Ken's suppose to come around to my house this afternoon and help us catch back up on our Algebra work. Geometry I can understand but this letters mixed with numbers mess is beyond me” Daisuke groused.
“Ditto, if Ken can't help explain it in a way we can understand I don't know what we're going to do” Takeru commiserated.
The conversation continued to flow with Takeru only occasionally giving his opinion on something as he pondered telling the others about his meeting with Hikari. Finally he decided that it was worth mentioning so he interrupted Daisuke and Scott's discussion on which was better RPG's or fighting games. “I had a run in with Hikari in the hall earlier today” he started out. By his tone of voice Iori and Daisuke knew that it had not gone well. “She started out by saying that she wanted to get together and talk things over. I told her that if she apologized to you Daisuke we would forgive and forget and go back to being friends. Apparently her gossip circle is running late because she immediately went into this spiel about wanting to go back to being a `happy couple' again and have things the way they were before my Dai-koi's `stupid' announcement. I then informed her of Dai-koi and mine's new relationship and that I no longer felt the same way about her. I told her I still cared for her but more in a sibling type manner than anything else. She then got this really nasty look on her face and told me that I was not gay and that you and I were simply trying to make her jealous and that we'd better stop or and I quote `if you keep this up I'm sure something awful will happen to you.' That made me a little suspicious and I tried to confront her about it but she tried to sidetrack me with talk about us already being beaten up by those boys and how the churches and other groups around here are making noise about all the `gay activity' going on at school. I can't prove it but I have a feeling that she had at least some knowledge of our being attacked before it happened and she may have even instigated it.”
Iori looked confused and asked “why would she do that; I mean sure she's not happy about any of us being gay but do you really think she'd go that far?”
Scott chuckled a little bit and hugged his boyfriend “you've heard the phrase `hell has no fury like a women scorned' well it sound to me like this Hikari chick feels like the three of you have scorned her and she may think she's justified in getting a little payback. I don't know her well enough to say for sure though, that's just my opinion. Whatever the case may be, I'll watch Iori-chan's back if he'll watch mine, and the two of you can look out for each other. Just to be safe let's not go anywhere alone for the time being and try to stay near crowds where anyone meaning us harm will be less likely to do anything.”
The three boys finished eating in silence until Iori spoke up “changing the topic of discussion to something more pleasant do the two of you think you'll be well in time to attend the Valentine's dance. I know you won't be out of your casts before Christmas but surely you'll have them off by then.”
Scott also pointed out “yeah the first major school function of the new year; hopefully the two of you will be able to go.”
“Yes I think we'll be able to at least show up together; it all depends on how my leg is. I wouldn't want to miss something like this for anything; which reminds me we need to check the student handbook for any rules that might hinder us and not allow us to go to functions as a couple.”
Daisuke had a thoughtful look on his face as he spoke up “didn't someone mention something about starting a Gay/Straight Alliance when I was in the hospital. We should start working on that too, while we still have the sympathy of the administration and some of the students.”
Takeru spoke up after Daisuke was finished speaking “so to summarize, one we need to avoid Hikari and watch each others backs so that an incident like what happened to me and Dai-chan isn't repeated. Two, we need to examine the student handbook and make sure there are no conflicts and change them if there is. Three, get together with the Di…, older kids and start laying out a plan for our new club.”
