Digimon Fan Fiction ❯ I saw you dancing in the gym... ❯ ...and Reactions ( Chapter 9 )

Total silence for what seems like an eternity. No-one speaks, no-one moves.
Then, suddenly, Sora begins to clap.
It's a tiny sound at first, barely audible, but then TK joins in, followed by Ken and then Yolei, and slowly, one by one, the others. Soon the clapping and cheering is drawing stares from nearby tables.
Matt and I sag with relief, clutching at each other for support. I manage a watery smile, and see it returned by each of our friends in turn. The response ranges from a beaming grin from TK, to a warm smile from Izzy, to a distinctly weak acknowledgement from Kari which barely reaches her eyes. Shock's still visible on her face, and that worries me, but before I can pursue the matter TK has leapt up and is dragging us towards a couple of empty seats. We slide into them, with TK on one side and Davis on the other, and I lean against Matt, pillowing my head on his shoulder as he puts his arm round me. Yolei tilts her head to one side, and from her expression I can tell she's just about to go 'Aww'.
Sure enough, she does.
"Aww, you look so sweet!" She breaks into a cheesy grin, and elbows Izzy. "Don't they?"
Izzy nods, grinning sheepishly at us, but before he can say anything TK pipes up.
"So, Matt, tell us how you two finally got together!"
One word from that sentence flags my brain, but before I can comment on it Matt beats me to it.
"Finally?"
TK grins. "Oh, come on, like it wasn't obvious from the word 'go'. It was just a question of how long it would take." A thought strikes him, and he digs around in his bag before pulling out a notepad. "Let's see...what is it today, the twelfth? That means...Joe wins the pot!"
He gets no further because Matt has grabbed him and is busily trying to strangle him.
"You took bets? You evil little..."
Words fail him, and TK starts snickering uncontrollably. Joe starts collecting his winnings from the rest of the group, who grumble good-humouredly before handing over the cash.
It's left to me to stop my koi from throttling his younger brother, which I achieve by dint of brute force. When I eventually manage to get his hands unlocked from around TK's throat, the younger boy slides away down the bench, still sniggering.
Ken speaks next, from his place safely across the table. "C'mon then, guys, spill the story!"
Matt flashes me a quick look, and I wiggle my eyebrows, indicating that he should tell it. He takes a deep breath, and starts off.
"Well, there's not that much to tell really..." I have to stop myself laughing out loud at this understatement, and he glares at me.
"Anyway," he says pointedly, and I shut up quickly, "the moment we first...got together was on the beach. Pavarotti here," he nudges me, "was murdering some song or other, so Sora and I tried to get him to sing something more cheerful - not to mention more tuneful."
Now it's my turn to elbow him, this time in mock outrage at his impugning of my singing talent.
He chuckles, then continues. "So he starts off into American Pie, like you do. Sora..." He casts a look at her across the table, not sure what to say, and she breaks in.
"Sora realised what was about to happen and decided to give the lovebirds a little privacy," she teases gently, and we blush in unison.
Matt clears his throat in embarrassment, then carries on. "Well, Tai gets to the chorus, and I can hear Don McLean turning in his grave, so I decide to help him out a bit by joining in." By now my face is a picture of shock at his gentle insults. "Somehow, don't ask me how, we ended up dancing together, and...well...when we got to the end of the song it just seemed the right thing to do, so I kissed him."

There's silence for a minute, and then a loud trumpeting noise as Yolei blows her nose. Trust her - she goes all gooey-eyed over sloppy romance novels and gets through a whole box of tissues every time there's a sappy film on TV.
"Aww," she squeals, "that's sooo sweet!"
Matt blushes, and TK pipes up again.
"So what did you do for the rest of the week?"
Damn that little blonde hentai...
Matt shrugs noncommittally. "Oh, nothing much. We went mountain-climbing, and Tai got so soaked that he got a massive cold and had to spend the rest of the holiday in bed."
I scowl at him, then put on my sweet-and-innocent voice.
"Aren't you forgetting something, Matt? You haven't told them about the flight back..."
TK's ears prick up, and I swear I can tell what he's thinking - what is it about that family? Were they allborn with one-track minds? Is there some sort of hentai gene that gets passed down?
Matt growls at me, then turns back to the group. "Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that. Well, nothing much happened..." Everyone slumps down, disappointed (especially TK, who was obviously expecting some juicy details).
"Oh, except that I screamed out to the whole plane that I wasn't going to sleep with Tai in the bathroom."
He giggles wickedly, and I get an action-replay of the scene from a few minutes ago - open mouths all around the table, with the exception of TK, who is laughing his dirty little blonde head off.
I counter him. "Wasn't that just before I poured a cup of coffee in your lap and told the air hostess you'd wet yourself?"
He stops laughing and glares murderously at me as the whole table erupts into giggles. He turns back to them and winks conspiratorially.
"Don't worry, guys, I got him back for that. You should've seen his face when he realised there was sugar on his chips and salt on his doughnut."
I glower at him and prepare to play the ultimate card, mouthing at him Prepare to lose, Ishida. He shakes his head and mouths back, something along the lines of You wouldn't dare.
Oh, but I would. "Of course, I had the last laugh, when I got the head of the cabin crew to read out the story of the Hawaiian Shirt Incident over the PA system."
By this time the table is rocking with hilarity. Even Kari's grinning along, and Davis is practically paralytic.
Eventually they recover, and Sora leans over and prods me in between gasping for breath.
"I don't believe you did that, Tai! You are SO evil" She prods Matt next, and he puts on his best 'innocent' look.
"And you, Matt, you must have the dirtiest mind I know!"
"Dirty-minded? You should have been there when Tai..." He trails off, realising what he was about to say, and flushes bright scarlet. TK nudges him.
"Go on, Matt. You were saying?"
Matt rounds on his brother again, who promptly dissolves into laughter at the deadly expression on his face. I'm forced to grab his arm to stop him from attacking the giggling boy.
"Children!" I chide them teasingly, and Matt backs off, looking shamefaced. TK has no such inhibitions, and carries on chuckling merrily. If he's not careful, I'll throttle him myself!
Izzy coughs politely, and everyone gradually quietens down.
"I think we'd all like to say congratulations to the happy couple - " He's forced to stop as he gets drowned out by cheering and wolf whistles (TK again - I am going to have serious words with that boy!). When all is calm again, he resumes.
"I have to say that it wasn't entirely unexpected - I think most of us caught a glimpse of the chemistry there, despite it being frequently explosive." That gets a chuckle from everyone and a mock glare from the two of us. "Still, it's great to see them both together at last - although trust them to manage it at the most dramatic moment possible. I hope Yolei doesn't mind having her thunder stolen too much."
That earns us a good-natured glare from a certain purple-haired girl, and then a grin.
"Oh, I couldn't possibly be angry with them," she flutes, "not when they look so adorable together."
A murmur of assent runs round the table, and Matt puts his arm round my shoulder and squeezes.
Seconds later, he places both hands on the table and stands up.
"Well, thanks everyone for being so understanding," he grins round the table, "but right now we've got some stuff to do. We'll see you all later, OK?"
As everyone starts to make plans as to where to meet tomorrow, I catch a glimpse of Ken across the table. He's staring almost wistfully at TK, as the latter continues to tease his brother mercilessly.
Suddenly, he feels my eyes on him and looks round, then flicks his gaze downward with a blush.
Aha. Caught red-handed. There's no mistaking that wistful look, nor that blush. Looks like our resident genius has a little unrequited crush. We'll have to see what we can do about that...

Eventually, Matt manages to extricate himself from the planning session, with an agreement to meet the next day at ten over at Izzy's. He slings an arm around my shoulders and I put mine around his waist. We start walking out, only to be pulled up by TK's voice behind us.
"Onii-chan," and as soon as I hear the tone of his voice I know Matt's going to kill him for this one, "what sort of stuff are you going to be doing?"
I feel Matt stiffen, but he flicks his head dismissively. "Oh, we've just got some unpacking to do."
We're almost out the door when TK says, very loudly,
"Well, I never knew unpacking could be used as a euphemism for - "
He gets elbowed into silence by a giggling Yolei, and we can still hear the gales of laughter following us down the street. I can feel Matt fuming inwardly.
"That brother of mine is SO dead..."
"Hey, hey, calm down," I reproach him softly. "I think we might just have the last laugh on him..."
I quickly tell him about Ken, and he laughs.
"Yeah, I've noticed that recently. It's not as one-sided as you might think, either. I've had suspicions about my brother for a long time, and there's definitely something that neither of them will talk about."
He takes a deep breath and strikes a ridiculous heroic pose that makes me giggle.
"I guess it's up to Yamato Ishida, Master Matchmaker, to get them together!"
"Yeah, right," I chuckle. "You couldn't match-make two rabbits!"
He fakes a punch at me, and I laugh even more. Suddenly I remember exactly what he said back in the restaurant, and I mock-scowl at him.
"Hey, can we talk about where you get off telling everyone I'm a crap singer?"
He breaks out into laughter just as our bus pulls up next to us.

* * * * *

We're still arguing by the time we get back to his house to find his dad gone and a note left by the door. He picks it up and scans it quickly, then laughs.
"Boy, Dad's paranoid!"
I arch an eyebrow at him, and he explains.
"The gist of the note is 'don't screw in my house without my permission."
He looks at my face and sniggers. "Don't worry, it's not put exactly like that, but that's pretty much what it means. Still, since he's out...feel like breaking the rules?"
He grins at me, then moves up really close and kisses me, sliding a leg between mine and rubbing up against me. I purr into his mouth, and he chuckles softly.
Suddenly, I realise, and push back out of the kiss.
"Hey, you haven't apologised for saying I can't sing yet!"
He reaches out and pulls me back into a hug, enfolding me in his warm arms. He leans down and whispers in my ear,
"Can this be my way of saying sorry?"
I mmph as he kisses me deeply, grinding his hips into mine. Then, without warning, he scoops me up into his arms and carries me over to his bedroom door. The effect would be perfect, if it wasn't for the fact that he's panting slightly.
"Jeez, Tai, next time you want me to do this you'd better go on a diet!" he wheezes, and I punch him good-naturedly, nearly making him drop me.
Finally, he reaches the bed, and dumps me unceremoniously on it. He then leans over me, one hand either side of my head, knees either side of my hips, his deep blue eyes fixed on mine.
I wrap my legs around his waist and drag him down to meet my waiting lips. The kiss is long and delicious - he tastes like sweet fruit.
He presses his body full-length against me, and I shiver and moan involuntarily. He slides his tongue up my neck and swirls it around my earlobe, making me shudder again, then whispers softly,
"You know what I like best about fighting with you?"
I shake my head, and he rolls his hips into mine again, eliciting another moan.
"The make-up sex."

OWARI

A/N: Yay! Last chapter finally written and posted!
Don't worry, though, this doesn't end here (although I think Matt and Tai deserve their privacy...). The sequel will be up shortly.

Massive, massive thanks to everyone who read this, especially those who stuck with me through the crappy chapters (of which there were far too many).
Hope to see you all in the sequel. Love to you all :)
