Kim snuggled deeper into her dark gray hoodie, stuffing her cold fingers into her pockets. She watched hundreds of busy tourists, family members, and businessmen bustled about the checkout station of the Tokyo airport. She shrugged her heavy black backpack higher onto her shoulders and walked to the clear glass doors.

The sounds of car engines, squealing tires, honking horns, and thousands of footsteps from thousands of people bombarded Kim's ears. It was a particularly ugly, cloudy day. It was cold and strong gusts of wind attacked in every direction.

Kim brushed back a strand of dark brown hair that hadn't been pulled back into her long, tightly fixed braid.

"Okay," she whispered to herself, "take a deep breath." Inhaling deeply then exhaling slowly, the young girl started down the busy sidewalk of Tokyo, Japan.

"Everything is fine, everything is running smoothly as planned," she mumbled as she weaved through the crowd.

'What am I talking about? I ran away from home, stole over two thousand dollars, and I'm in Japan and can't speak a lick of Japanese!' she thought.

"I just need to calm down." She stood with a group of people huddled together at the corner, waiting for the light she suspected as the "walk" sign to turn green.

Making her way to the other side, Kim stared up at all the shop names and signs. And in the end, she had to walk into the stores to actually tell what they were.

So far, she walked into two grocery stores, one hair salon, one shoe store, and a store that sort of resembled a Best Buy back in America.

"Man, where're the stupid hotels?" she growled, a little agitated. She walked up to another large building, but this time she could hear the muffled tone of music coming from inside. She looked up at the strange foreign letters on the building, then at the door.

Curious, Kim opened the door and stepped in. When the door closed, darkness fell upon her. She quickly felt around her until her fingers brushed against the rough texture of a brick wall.

With her hand attached to the wall, Kim allowed herself to be guided by the hard beat of the music. And it led her to a large archway opening and what was through it made her stop in awe.

It seemed she had crossed the threshold from day to night. A massive, black tiled floor sat in the middle of the room, lowered a few feet with steps cut and embedded on all sides. Attached to the high beams in the ceiling were multicolored stage lights, strobe lights, and even a disco ball.

On the floor danced a couple dozen people and to the back of the building and placed right at the floor was a black stage with a band that sang something in Japanese. Even though she didn't understand the song, Kim still liked the beat it had.

Around the room were booths and round tables with a single light shining down over each of them. Kim stepped into the stuffy air and she suddenly saw a bar backed up to the far left of the room.

"Wow, a club," she said, still amazed. Suddenly feeling thirsty, Kim walked down a small stairway and made her way over to the bar.

She stepped up between two barstools and waited for the bartender. When he came over she smiled a little. That was, of course, until he started speaking to her in his native tongue.

"Er," she said looking confused. He blinked, then smiled at her. He raised a hand, nodded, and proceeded to say in slow, but clear English, "What would you like?"

Kim sighed in relief, then asked, "Do you have Sprite?" He nodded and turned to get the drink. Kim reached into the font pocket of her jeans and pulled out some loose change.

"One dollar," the bartender said. Kim handed him the money and he left to talk to another person.

While occasionally taking a sip from her cold Sprite, Kim started thinking about what she should do with her new life, as a runaway that is.

"Well, for one thing, I need to learn the language here or I'll never get anywhere!" As she took a gulp from her soda and sucked on an ice cube, she started getting the feeling she was being watched.

Stiffening, the ice cube trapped between her clenched teeth, Kim looked around slowly. Her eyes drifted over the room, over peoples' heads, over the dance floor, over the lights, and over the tables and booths. Her wandering gaze halted on one table crammed up in a corner.

Three boys, all looking around the ages between seventeen and nineteen and frighteningly buff, stared at her with wicked grins on their faces.

The ice cube crushed into tiny ice crystals in her mouth.

"Great," she mumbled, not liking their smiles or the direct attention. The older looking guy gave her a flirtatious wink and nudged one of his friends and they all started to laugh.

Kim rolled her eyes. As much as she liked the club, she didn't like the warnings her brain were sending her. So, gulping down the rest of the Sprite and sucking a couple more ice cubes into her mouth, Kim heft her backpack higher onto her shoulders, and she walked away from the bar to the arch doorway and back into the pitch black hallway.

Once outside again, Kim had to close her eyes to the dim light, having to wait for them to adjust themselves. Looking from side to side, she started walking in the direction she confronted the club in.

"I need to find a place to stay before it gets dark," she suggested to herself. Like before, Kim peered into all the buildings she came across in order to find a hotel or an apartment to rent.

Just as she walked out of another shoe store, she glanced down the sidewalk to find, to her horror, that the same group of boys from the club was following her.

Kim diverted her eyes before they saw her watching them. Thinking quickly, she shoved her hands into her pockets and began her trip to the next building, wanting everything to seem normal.

"They're probably just going in the same direction as me. There's probably a store or something and it's just on the same sidewalk," she said, trying to reassure herself.

But they hadn't turned into any of the buildings and it was beginning to scare her.

"You're a fifteen-year-old girl, walking down a sidewalk alone in a foreign country. Smart, Kim! Maybe we should have thought about this kinda stuff before running away!"

Glancing over her shoulder she saw them still following her, but they were acting painfully casual about it. And because they were so casual, a small part of her mind still nagged at her about them not really stalking her.

Tired of being unsure and paranoid, Kim decided to finish this little game and see if she was in fact being stalked or just being stupid.

Kim turned and stood at a crossing and pressed the button for the walk light, mentally screaming at it to hurry up and turn green.

When it did, she all but jogged across the road, cars honking at her impatiently. When she got to the other side, Kim peeked over to the crossing, and found that the boys stood at it, waiting for the light to turn green again.

Her heart slammed against her ribcage in a wave of panic. She whirled around and began speed walking up hill. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw them cross the street and turn in her direction.

"Oh no, oh no, oh man! Crap!" she cried as began jogging away at this point. Being casual was over. Now it was time to face the harsh truth of reality: those boys were after her and she knew deep in the pit of stomach that they weren't going to ask for her phone number.

'Coincidence!'

"Shut up!" she cried, annoyed that her mind would think up something so stupid when she already knew what was going on.

She peered over her shoulder once more and her eyes locked with the older one's. With a cry of distress, Kim started running, dodging around other people, street lamps, parked bicycles, and fire hydrants.

In only four to five minutes, Kim had to stop and catch her breath. She fell against a wall and coughed a few times, cursing herself for being so out of shape. ((A/N: She's not fat, guys! lol))

Gulping down some air, she lifted her head and found that people looked at her oddly as they passed by her. She rose a shaky hand and smiled weakly.

"I'm fine," she said, then remembered they probably don't know what she just said. She rolled her gaze to the side and just barely saw the group of boys now running toward her.

"No, I'm not," she whispered, then shoved herself from the wall and began running again.

"Gotta hide, gotta hide, gotta hide," she chanted between breaths. Just then, and alleyway drew near and her mind debated frantically on whether or not to hide herself there.

Looking over her shoulder she saw the boys closer than she liked. Groaning, she took a sharp turn into the dark, narrow space between two buildings.

Almost immediately, Kim spotted a dumpster positioned against the wall of one of the buildings and she dove behind it, flattening herself against the wall.

She heard pairs of feet clapping nearer and louder then getting softer and fainter as they went by. She waited a few seconds before letting her breath out slowly and heavily.

Kim slowly stood up and was about to step out when one of the boys suddenly jumped into view at the mouth of the alley. She stifled a gasp behind her hand and fell back against the wall quickly. She heard his slow, time-consuming footsteps draw closer as he walked deeper into the narrow space.

Tears sting the corner of her eyes as she edged closer to the dumpster. Her fingers brushed along the wall, failing to notice a faint rippling in it.

'Oh god, oh god', she thought as she crouched in front of the rippling wall. Suddenly she exhaled loudly and quickly covered her mouth, and then shoved herself against the wall, or what looked like a wall.

"AHHH!!" she cried as she fell through the wall.

The boy jerked her head up and ran to the dumpster, expecting to that cute girl they had been chasing. Instead, all he found was trash, grime, and graffiti on the wall. But it was too dark for him to see the faint ripples just next to the dumpster.

He looked around and, after figuring she wasn't there, turned and left the alleyway, running out to catch up with his friends.
