Chapter 10: Destiny Calls
by Wannabe Koushiro
A/N: Phew! I finished this chapter finally! I can't believe all the good reviews
I've gotten for this story. The first part of this chapter isn't great,
but...I've taken care of one part of Koushiro's angst...thank goodness. And I
seriously doubt there'll be any more lemon content....Don't hold me to that
though. Okay, timeline note: Takes off from the end of the last chapter, which
explains them yelling at you-know-who, and then, even though I marked it, ends
up two years later. During which, if you were curious, and I'm sure no one
really cares, but, and this proves how lazy I am, Koushiro did have a
baby......*looks around* Oh, come on, how can you have read this far and _not_
know what I'm talking about?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"A dream I had sometime,
a voice I felt somewhere,
It's not a lie,
I'll accept everything"
- "Seven"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"IZZY!!" I heard myself, Tai, Nika, Agumon, and Tentomon yell at her.
"What?" She asked, probably trying to figure out what she had done wrong.
"No offense, but that creeped me out more than usual." I told her. And she knew
that she creeped me out just by existing.
"Fine, fine. Just don't come crawling to me when you find out it's your fate
that was sealed by the wind." She said, taking to flight to be at eye level with
me. I think she would have stuck her tongue out at me, if she had one. I raised
an eyebrow at what she had said.
"Something tells me that you know something that you're not supposed to." I
said, wondering what in the world was with that ladybug mutant. Nika started
looking at me strangely. "But, I'm not going to worry about it right now." I
swear I heard a sigh of relief from Tai, who was standing right behind me. I
felt his hand on my back. I knew what he was trying to encourage me to do, but I
just couldn't. Not yet, anyway. Unless...
"Hey, I'm going to take the 'mons and get them playing a game or something. I
think you and Nika need to talk." That figures. Leave it to Tai to give me a
chance like that.
"Yeah, we haven't have a chance to talk by ourselves for awhile, Koushiro.
Thanks, Tai." Yeah, thanks a lot, Tai. Nika latched herself to my hand and led
me to where we could watch everything, but be by ourselves at the same time.
We sat down against a tree. Nika leaned up against me. "Thanks." She said.
I smiled. "No problem. Anything for you, sis." I told her. She pulled her charm
out.
"Um...So, would you explain what these are?" She asked, examining hers.
I laughed a bit, and got mine out. "Well, they're our crests." I told her. She
looked at me like I was crazy. "They helped our digimon digivolve to their
highest level." I explained a bit more. "Kari's crest was light, which is the
engraved symbol on yours. I assume the reason for that was that you happen to
have mentioned that your name is 'Hikari'. I'll explain the rest in a bit." Nika
nodded in answer. "On mine and Tai's, the engraved symbol is his crest,
courage."
Nika interrupted me at this point. "So, I take the larger symbol, the one that
got the others engraved on is yours?" She asked. I nodded in answer.
"Of course. I am pretty much the connecting thread here. And before you ask, my
crest was knowledge." I told her.
"I can see why. I swear, you seem to know everything." Nika said. I blushed a
bit.
"I don't know everything, Nika-chan." I told her. I debated with myself on
whether to tell her the secret I'd been keeping from her for the past seven
years. "There's one thing I know I have to do, though." I told her, feeling very
nervous.
"Oh? What's that?" Nika asked.
"Nika, you love me, right?" I asked her.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I?" She asked. Ah, childish innocence. Something I wish
I could have kept a bit longer than I did.
"Would you still love me even if you knew that I wasn't really your brother?" I
asked her. Nika looked at me strangely.
"Why are you asking me this?" She asked me nervously.
"Because, Nika, I'm not really your brother." I waited for that to register with
her. She turned her brown eyes at me with a realization.
"I had a feeling." She said. "You've acted kinda weird since that meeting at
Kari's house. So, what's the story?"
"Do you think you can handle it? I know this has to be a bit of a shock to you."
She looked so nervous. I wish I hadn't started this conversation, but now that I
have, I better see it through to the end. Nika finally nodded.
I took a deep breath to calm myself before I gave her the short form of the
story. "Well, when I was just a baby, my real parents died in a car accident." I
shuddered as I remembered the nightmare I used to have when I was younger. "Mom
and Dad were distant relatives, and they took me in." I explained to Nika. She
had a look of...sadness? in her eyes. "Nika-chan, are you okay?" I asked, unsure
of what to do anymore. If it hadn't have been for what I just told her, I would
have just gathered her up in a hug and held her, but I wasn't sure of what to do
now.
"So, what happens now? I'm scared of that prophecy now, niisan." She still
called me 'brother.' I guess I was worried for nothing after all.
"Nika, you know I wouldn't let anything happen to you. You're my sister, and
nothing can change that." I grasped her small hand and stared straight into her
eyes. "And you still called me 'niisan,' so I know that things haven't changed
that much between us."
"I don't see how they could. I love you too much, Koushiro. And I'm sorry about
what happened to your real parents." I sighed.
"It's okay, Nika-chan." I said as she climbed into my lap. "It just so happens
that I think I'm one of the luckiest people on the planet now." And I did. I
have her, our parents, Tai, and Tentomon. Well, if it wasn't for Izzy's higher
evolutions trying to kill me, I'd be lucky for everyone. Speaking of her, I
think Nika and I have had our moment. "You want to go play with them now?" I
asked her. She nodded.
We got up and headed over to where Tai and our digimon were playing. We couldn't
exactly figure out what they playing though. It looked like a screwy version of
tag. Actually, I think it was, with the rules changed in consideration of two
flying creatures. Tai walked over to us as we approached.
"Hey, you two. Wanna join us?" Tai asked us.
"I do!" Nika cried.
"Go on, then, Nika-chan." Tai said, knowing she didn't like him calling her
that. Nika ran over to where the 'mons where and asked Izzy what was going on.
"Well?" He asked me. "Did you tell her?"
"I told her." I told him, watching Nika and her digimon playing. I turned my
gaze away from then and looked at Tai. "It went better than I thought it would."
I told him. Tai wrapped his arm around my waist.
"And you feel much better for it, don't you?" He asked. I just nodded in answer.
"I'm proud of you, love." He whispered in my ear. I could feel the blood rising
in my cheeks to form a blush.
"Come on, you guys. Join us!" Nika hollered at us. I looked at Tai. He just
nodded and ran down to them. I sighed, and joined them as well. It may be my
last chance for a while.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
{2 years later}
I was awakened by a cry in the night. I poked Tai to see if he would get up, but
he didn't. I sighed and went to see what my dear Ikiru needed.
"Hush, hush." I whispered to him as I picked up my miracle. I laughed to myself.
"'Mama's' here." It was kind of a joke around the house now. Though I have a
feeling that I'll probably be called 'Mama' for the rest of my life. I don't
care though. I went through a lot to bring Ikiru into existence, so it just may
be a small price to pay. Thankfully he just needed changed, so I was back in bed
quickly.
I smiled as I remembered about eight or nine years ago, to when my sister was
born. Has it really been that long? It really makes me think 'where did the time
go?'. I snuggled up against Tai and went back to sleep. Well, sleep was a
relative term at four in the morning.
Tai muttered at me quietly about an hour and a half later, and still half
asleep. "Everything okay, Koko?" I grinned. He finally found a new stupid
nickname for me, but it wasn't that I minded. It was slightly better than
'Izzy', and it was kind of my own fault anyway.
"Yeah." I answered.
"You're lying." Tai responded. I sighed.
"It's just that...things have been so quiet recently." I said. Tai ran his hand
through my hair.
"You want something to happen? And wasn't what happened with Ikiru enough
excitement for a while?" He asked as his other arm went around me.
I nodded in response. I don't think I would ever want to go through that again,
not that I could anyway. Tai bent down to give me a quick kiss. "You know I love
you." I smiled.
"I know." I answered. "Hey, it's Saturday, isn't it?" I asked. Tai nodded. The
days have been somewhat blurred together for me lately. I didn't have a chance
to say anything more as the phone rang.
"What the...? It's like six in the morning!" Tai said.
"It might be one of our sisters..." I answered him. Tai just grumbled something
and reached over and picked up the phone by the bed.
"Hello?" He answered somewhat groggily. Apparently, the person on the other end
started speaking a bit fast and in a bit of a frenzy.
"Whoa! Hikari, calm down!" He told her. I mouthed at him 'Which one?' I would
love to know what my parents were smoking when they named my sister 'Hikari'. He
pointed at himself to let me know it was his sister and not mine. Which didn't
really surprise me because I couldn't see Nika getting up this early on a
Saturday morning. "Okay, we'll meet with you later today, alright. Let me ask
Koushiro something quick." He turned to me quickly. "Do you think your mom would
baby-sit Ikiru and Hana?" I nodded quickly. She loves those two kids for some
reason. And I was thinking of going there anyway.
"Tai, I was thinking of going there anyway, why don't we all meet there? I'm
sure my parents won't mind. Nika's involved in this, isn't she?" Tai nodded
sadly and in agreement. I sighed as he turned back to the phone. 'Nika-chan, I
know you're going to get hurt. And I don't like it one bit...' I thought to
myself.
"We might as well get up, huh?" I said after Tai finished speaking to his
sister.
"What's the rush?" Tai asked as he straddled me. He bent down and kissed me. I
just melted.
"I guess there isn't that much of one." I answered, smiling. I pulled him back
down to me. A wailing cry broke the romantic atmosphere, however.
"Ah, well." Tai said, grinning. "I'll go check on him." He volunteered himself,
stealing a kiss as he left the room. I just got up and got dressed for the day.
Tai returned, bringing Ikiru with him. "I think he just wants his mommy." Tai
grinned at me. I gave him a mock glare as I took the baby from him.
"Someone is going to get hurt if they keep calling me 'mommy,' aren't they?" I
said, looking into Ikiru's dark eyes, but directing the comment at Tai.
"That's not my fault, Koko." He said. "However, that was your own fault." Tai
smirked at me.
"Come on, I was in a hurry. It's kinda hard to remember how to write your name
when you're out of your mind in pain." I told him. He just grinned.
"It's okay, and it gave me a new nickname for you, so..." He trailed off.
"So, what time are we supposed to meet?" I asked.
"About 10." He answered. A look of pain crossed his face. "I'm glad your family
still accepts us." I sighed. Tai's family had all but forgotten about him. Just
because he chose to live the rest of his life with me. I really felt sad for
him, but his sister still associates with him and me, and my family has accepted
him as one of us.
"Hey, I never thought I'd have so many relatives." I smiled at him. I wrapped my
arms around his waist and stole a small kiss after I had set down Ikiru.
"We're just one, big, happy family, ne?" He laughed nervously.
"It's alright." I told him. I sighed. "Everything will be alright..." I said
quietly, hoping that I was right.
"Ikiru! Koushiro! Tai! How are you guys?" My sister Nika gathered us in a big
hug.
"Geez, Nika," Tai began. "You'd think we live countries apart, not just across
town!" I smiled at that. "Is Kari here yet?" He asked. Nika took her nephew from
me and shook her head.
"No. She said it's just going to be her and Hana though." I shrugged.
"Where's Mom and Dad?" I asked.
"Dad's working, and, well, why don't you take a wild guess where Mom is?" She
said, smiling. I had already wandered towards the kitchen.
"Hi, Mom!" I said, shocking her a bit.
"Koushiro!" She laughed, then turned around to hug me. "How are you, and how's
Ikiru?"
I returned the hug. "We're great, Mom. I do, however have a favor to ask."
"Ask away."
"Would you mind watching Ikiru and Hana for a while today?"
"Of course I will. Where is he, anyway?" She asked.
"Ikiru is with his aunt." I smiled. Nika was only nine and she was already an
aunt!
"You know Nika loves him." Mom said as she turned back to her kitchen counter
which had various baking ingredients scattered across it.
"You're on this baking kick again?" She had a thing for bringing us food back
when we faced MaloMyotismon...It really scared me...that, and the fact that
everyone would thank her in unison...
"Well, just being a good hostess." She smiled at me.
"No, Mom's just wierd." Nika said, walking into the kitchen, still holding
Ikiru.
"Hikari!" I chastised her. Mom just smiled.
"Nika's had an attitude for a while. And she'll just ignore you if you call her
that."
I took Ikiru from Nika and held him while I glared at her. I stood up and handed
Ikiru to Tai. "I think I'm going to have a little talk with my little sister." I
said to Tai's face, but directed the comment at Nika. I grabbed her arm, and
dragged her to her room.
Nika looked down at the floor. "Gomen."
"You should be sorry. Mom is not that wierd, plus, you may not realize this now,
but you should be grateful. You have your parents. You'll never go through what
I did, and for that, I am thankful. Now, are you going to apologize to Mom?" I
asked.
"Yes, I will." She said.
"No time like the present, right?" I told her. Nika nodded and left. I sighed,
and heard the door bell ring. Since I was closest, I answered it.
"Hello, Kari, Hana. Come on in." I invited them.
"Hello, Koushiro. I wish we'd be meeting under better circumstances." Kari
apologized.
"It's alright. I take it you had some sort of a vision." Kari nodded.
"Mom's going to watch the kids while we meet. You can tell us all about it." I
told her. She looked extremely nervous. I put my hand on her shoulder. "It'll be
alright." I told her, trying to get her to relax a bit.
"Thanks for trying." She said. "Come on, Hana, why don't see what 'Grandma' is
doing?" I laughed at that. Mom really has become the unofficial grandmother of
Hana. I don't know how that happened, but...
I followed them back towards the kitchen, where everyone else was. Tai was
sitting at the table, holding our son, Nika was sitting across from them looking
a bit sour. She probably was after what I told her.
"Shall we go in the living room?" I asked. Everyone nodded, and leaving the
children with Mom, we got settled in there. "Alright, Kari, you're the one who
called it, tell us why we're here."
"Well, I had a premonition last night...It involved us, except for you Tai, and,
well...I'm not sure if they were our 'mons or not, but there was Magnadramon,
and a wierd, gold insect, and...Gatomon...which doesn't really make sense to
me..." Kari trailed off.
"I've finally figured out who the gold insect is." I told them, and smiled. "But
you're right about the Gatomon and Magnadramon thing, it doesn't really make
sense..."
"It could be a different Magnadramon..." Tentomon interjected.
"What makes you say that?" I asked.
"Because, the ultimates that can digivolve to a magnadramon are Angewomon,
Okuwamon...and MegaKabuterimon..." That startling revelation made us all stare
at him and Izzy.
"You don't think..." Nika and Kari said at the same time...
"That was freaky..." Tai commented about our sisters doing that.
"I'm starting to think that being named 'Hikari' is a curse." Kari said.
"Don't say that!" Nika said. "That's my name, too, you know."
"Sorry, Nika-chan." Kari apologized. "But I really do. Now, for the big
question...Why would we have the same mega level digimon, assuming, now, of
course that the magnadramon in question is Izzy?"
"Pure, dumb luck?" Izzy suggested. That brought her some glares from a few of
us. "Besides...I can't even reach ultimate, considering that some people around
here think that I'm trying to kill them and won't even let me digivolve to
champion anymore!"
"Calm down, Izzy-chan." Nika told her. "We know you didn't mean it." She said,
quickly glancing at me. "Hey, what's that noise?" Nika asked. Everyone suddenly
became quiet, listening to hear whatever it was that Nika heard.
"Is that..." Tai began.
"The digivices?" I finished his thought for him. I pulled mine out, and he, Nika
and Kari did the same. The two D-3's were beeping wildly, along with mine. "Why
isn't yours beeping?" I asked Tai, and all he could do was shrug.
"Weird, ne?" Nika asked.
"Too wierd..." I trailed off.
"You are needed..."
"Uh...did you guys hear that?" I asked, hoping that I wasn't the only one that
heard the strange voice.
"The Guardian must arrive soon...all will be lost without her..."
I shivered. Kari nodded an answer to my question. Nika looked like she was in a
trance. Tai just looked at us like we were weird. Wait a minute...'Her?' Then
why in the name of anything holy was my digivice going crazy?
"I think we need to get to the Digiworld, and quick." Kari said, trying to keep
her wits about her. I think she was as disturbed as I was. I nodded in
agreement, even though I had a bad feeling about going.
I told Mom what we were doing. I knew I had a sad look on my face when I did it,
but, it couldn't be helped. I looked at Ikiru...'I'm sorry, son...I'll be back
when I can...Grandma will take care of you until then,' I thought at him. Kari
told Hana goodbye and to be a good girl for her while she was gone. At least
Hana's father wasn't coming with us. At least, if we don't make it back...I
won't finish that sentence. I can't finish that sentence.
"Are we ready?" Kari asked, as we gathered around Nika's computer.
"Just about." Nika answered. She quickly grabbed a jacket and was in the process
of putting her shoes on. "Okay, I'm ready." I grinned.
"You're still wearing those?" I asked her.
"Actually, I figured, since they're old, why not?" Nika shrugged.
"You know, I hate to say this, but...I think your sister is turning out be just
like you!" Tai said to me...I took a good look at her. She was wearing my old
shoes, a pair of jeans that looked just comfortably worn...not completely ratty,
but not perfect either, an orange t-shirt with a purple, plaid, flannel shirt
over that...and her computer strapped to her back.
"Unfortunately, I think you're right." I said.
"Okay, guys, what's the joke?" Nika asked as she glared at us from behind her
glasses. Tai and I just grinned. Nika was almost blind without her glasses,
something that she inherited from Dad. I guess I should be lucky I don't have to
put up with that.
"I'll explain it to you later, Nika-chan." I told her. "So, anyone named
'Hikari,' do you mind opening the port?" I asked.
"Don't call me 'Hikari'!" Nika and Kari said in unison.
"Don't talk in unison!" Tai told them. "That's freaky!"
"There are things freakier than that." I told Tai.
"Yeah, like your sister reliving your life."
"Ouch." I replied to that little jab at my family, but I smiled at it anyway.
"Besides, she reminds me of Yolei more."
"Shut up, guys." Nika said, holding her digivice up. "Before I take anymore of
your 'abuse,' Digiport open!" She said quickly and all four of us were sucked in
before we could say anything more.
It seemed like a long while before I was conscious...Wait a second...I sat up,
and immediately felt someone's arms go around me.
"Are you alright?" Tai asked nervously. I nodded, and took a good look around.
"Uh...Tai, would you mind pinching me?" I asked...This place looked so
familiar...Like something from a dream I had... "OW!" I exclaimed as Tai did
what I had asked him to do. "You know, people don't usually actually go ahead
and pinch someone even if they were asked to do it!" I told him.
"Sorry..." Tai said.
"It's alright," I told him. "Where's Nika and Kari?" I asked. I looked down, and
noticed that our 'mons weren't there either. "And the digimon?"
"I don't know." Tai answered. "When we got here, you hit your head, Tentomon and
Izzy disappeared, and, I'm not sure, but I think it might have been a Gennai
clone came and took our sisters..." He paused for a moment. "I'm worried about
them, Koushiro..."
"I am too..." I responded. I was about to say more, when someone walked into the
room. They motioned for us to follow them. Well, I thought it was us. Tai tried
to follow, but the person shook their head no. I looked at him. "I'll be fine."
I said, trying to make the best of it. "I'll be back soon." I said, not sure if
I would be. I stumbled a bit, feeling a bit lightheaded, but quickly regained my
footing.
The strange person led me for a while before I finally asked the question that
had been on my mind. "Where are we going?" I asked.
"You'll find out soon." An unfamiliar girl's voice answered. I just grimaced and
left it at that. We soon stopped at...I'm not exactly sure what it was, but it
was dark.
"Uh..."
"Shush, Koushiro." She commanded me. "Close your eyes and open your heart...and
your mind."
Huh?! How did she know my name? That confused me, but I followed her
instructions.
"Can you see it?" She asked in a voice barely above a whisper.
I opened my eyes, and was a bit surprised. It seemed that I was somewhere else,
and yet, I hadn't moved. This was more familiar than anywhere we'd been yet. As
if to confirm my suspicions, a large dragon flew overhead and landed behind the
young lady.
"There you are, my friend. We have a guest." She told the dragon as it wrapped
it's serpentine body around her.
"Why?" It asked in a low, hissing voice.
"Now, now. You know better than to ask that." She told the dragon. "My friend is
suspicious of anyone who finds this place. It is sacred to many." She explained
to me. I just nodded, afraid to speak. "You should feel special, as you were
actually invited."
"May I ask a couple of questions?" I asked, hoping I wouldn't get the same
answer as she gave to her dragon friend. Who looked suspiciously familiar...I
swear that's the same purple color that Izzy had retained through all her
evolutions...It can't be though...I pray to the higher beings that are listening
that it's not her...That's not Nika, either...If it is, something really wierd
is going on.
"Please, go ahead and ask. I cannot guarantee an answer, however." The young
lady answered me. That was something, anyway.
"First, what is this place, and why was I, of all people, chosen to be invited?"
I asked, a little bit scared of the answer.
She laughed. "Why, the answer to both is in your name." She giggled. I knew I
had a confused look on my face. What in the name of anything holy did that have
to do with anything? She smiles as she continued. "Legend tells of a place where
only the pure hearted and open minded souls converge, here in the Digital World.
And it has been without it's guardian for almost 25 years." She said.
'Twenty-five years?' I thought to myself. "And, usually, it's guardian is named
for the object. This should answer your questions," She said as she suddenly
became smaller than she just was and took the more familiar shape
of..."brother." Nika finished.
"Nika!" That did answer a lot.
"There's just one little matter to clear up." Nika said. I held my breath,
awaiting to hear this. She raised her head and met my eyes. "You knew, and you
didn't tell me." Now I was really confused.
"Knew what, Nika?" I asked.
"That...AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!" She fell to her knees, screaming in pain. The
dragon screamed in perfect unison with her.
"Nika!" I cried, not quite sure what to do. And totally scared to do anything,
to tell the truth. "I don't have a clue as to what's going on, so how could I
have known whatever it is that I was supposed to have?"
Nika seemed to regain her composure, but somehow seemed different. Her eyes
didn't look right. "You're right, Koushiro...just...just don't let her win..." A
voice that wasn't Nika's came out of her mouth. It sounded familiar, but I
couldn't place it at the moment.
The dragon was slowly coming around. I looked around, hoping for somewhere to
run to and hide, but there wasn't much of a chance of that.
"I...can't...let you...hurt her..." The dragon said slowly, taking to flight
with its feathery wings that seemed too small to lift the large body. She
started gathering energy around her forepaws. I suddenly had a sense of
deja-vu. Only this time, Kabuterimon wasn't around to save me. Her low voice
growled out, announcing her attack this time..."Dragon..." She never finished as
an unannounced attack hit her. I turned my head around to confirm my suspicions.
It was what I thought it was, but, now the question was 'is that _who_ I think
it is?'.
I didn't know if I dared ask, but I did anyway. "Tentomon?" I asked incredously.
"Finally figured it out, huh?" He retorted.
"I didn't think you could reach mega!" I said, the events surrounding this
leaving my mind for a moment.
"Well, until this little problem is over, don't worry about it!" He told me,
circling around to attack again.
"Don't hurt her!" I hollered to him. "I think it's Izzy!"
"I'll take it under advisement." He answered.
"I'll deal with Nika." I said. I moved closer to her. "Nika-chan?" I asked,
hoping she was herself for the moment.
"I...I'm alright...I think..." She answered, and fainted away again.
"Hey, I'm going to take the 'mons and get them playing a game or something. I
think you and Nika need to talk." That figures. Leave it to Tai to give me a
chance like that.
"Yeah, we haven't have a chance to talk by ourselves for awhile, Koushiro.
Thanks, Tai." Yeah, thanks a lot, Tai. Nika latched herself to my hand and led
me to where we could watch everything, but be by ourselves at the same time.
We sat down against a tree. Nika leaned up against me. "Thanks." She said.
I smiled. "No problem. Anything for you, sis." I told her. She pulled her charm
out.
"Um...So, would you explain what these are?" She asked, examining hers.
I laughed a bit, and got mine out. "Well, they're our crests." I told her. She
looked at me like I was crazy. "They helped our digimon digivolve to their
highest level." I explained a bit more. "Kari's crest was light, which is the
engraved symbol on yours. I assume the reason for that was that you happen to
have mentioned that your name is 'Hikari'. I'll explain the rest in a bit." Nika
nodded in answer. "On mine and Tai's, the engraved symbol is his crest,
courage."
Nika interrupted me at this point. "So, I take the larger symbol, the one that
got the others engraved on is yours?" She asked. I nodded in answer.
"Of course. I am pretty much the connecting thread here. And before you ask, my
crest was knowledge." I told her.
"I can see why. I swear, you seem to know everything." Nika said. I blushed a
bit.
"I don't know everything, Nika-chan." I told her. I debated with myself on
whether to tell her the secret I'd been keeping from her for the past seven
years. "There's one thing I know I have to do, though." I told her, feeling very
nervous.
"Oh? What's that?" Nika asked.
"Nika, you love me, right?" I asked her.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I?" She asked. Ah, childish innocence. Something I wish
I could have kept a bit longer than I did.
"Would you still love me even if you knew that I wasn't really your brother?" I
asked her. Nika looked at me strangely.
"Why are you asking me this?" She asked me nervously.
"Because, Nika, I'm not really your brother." I waited for that to register with
her. She turned her brown eyes at me with a realization.
"I had a feeling." She said. "You've acted kinda weird since that meeting at
Kari's house. So, what's the story?"
"Do you think you can handle it? I know this has to be a bit of a shock to you."
She looked so nervous. I wish I hadn't started this conversation, but now that I
have, I better see it through to the end. Nika finally nodded.
I took a deep breath to calm myself before I gave her the short form of the
story. "Well, when I was just a baby, my real parents died in a car accident." I
shuddered as I remembered the nightmare I used to have when I was younger. "Mom
and Dad were distant relatives, and they took me in." I explained to Nika. She
had a look of...sadness? in her eyes. "Nika-chan, are you okay?" I asked, unsure
of what to do anymore. If it hadn't have been for what I just told her, I would
have just gathered her up in a hug and held her, but I wasn't sure of what to do
now.
"So, what happens now? I'm scared of that prophecy now, niisan." She still
called me 'brother.' I guess I was worried for nothing after all.
"Nika, you know I wouldn't let anything happen to you. You're my sister, and
nothing can change that." I grasped her small hand and stared straight into her
eyes. "And you still called me 'niisan,' so I know that things haven't changed
that much between us."
"I don't see how they could. I love you too much, Koushiro. And I'm sorry about
what happened to your real parents." I sighed.
"It's okay, Nika-chan." I said as she climbed into my lap. "It just so happens
that I think I'm one of the luckiest people on the planet now." And I did. I
have her, our parents, Tai, and Tentomon. Well, if it wasn't for Izzy's higher
evolutions trying to kill me, I'd be lucky for everyone. Speaking of her, I
think Nika and I have had our moment. "You want to go play with them now?" I
asked her. She nodded.
We got up and headed over to where Tai and our digimon were playing. We couldn't
exactly figure out what they playing though. It looked like a screwy version of
tag. Actually, I think it was, with the rules changed in consideration of two
flying creatures. Tai walked over to us as we approached.
"Hey, you two. Wanna join us?" Tai asked us.
"I do!" Nika cried.
"Go on, then, Nika-chan." Tai said, knowing she didn't like him calling her
that. Nika ran over to where the 'mons where and asked Izzy what was going on.
"Well?" He asked me. "Did you tell her?"
"I told her." I told him, watching Nika and her digimon playing. I turned my
gaze away from then and looked at Tai. "It went better than I thought it would."
I told him. Tai wrapped his arm around my waist.
"And you feel much better for it, don't you?" He asked. I just nodded in answer.
"I'm proud of you, love." He whispered in my ear. I could feel the blood rising
in my cheeks to form a blush.
"Come on, you guys. Join us!" Nika hollered at us. I looked at Tai. He just
nodded and ran down to them. I sighed, and joined them as well. It may be my
last chance for a while.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
{2 years later}
I was awakened by a cry in the night. I poked Tai to see if he would get up, but
he didn't. I sighed and went to see what my dear Ikiru needed.
"Hush, hush." I whispered to him as I picked up my miracle. I laughed to myself.
"'Mama's' here." It was kind of a joke around the house now. Though I have a
feeling that I'll probably be called 'Mama' for the rest of my life. I don't
care though. I went through a lot to bring Ikiru into existence, so it just may
be a small price to pay. Thankfully he just needed changed, so I was back in bed
quickly.
I smiled as I remembered about eight or nine years ago, to when my sister was
born. Has it really been that long? It really makes me think 'where did the time
go?'. I snuggled up against Tai and went back to sleep. Well, sleep was a
relative term at four in the morning.
Tai muttered at me quietly about an hour and a half later, and still half
asleep. "Everything okay, Koko?" I grinned. He finally found a new stupid
nickname for me, but it wasn't that I minded. It was slightly better than
'Izzy', and it was kind of my own fault anyway.
"Yeah." I answered.
"You're lying." Tai responded. I sighed.
"It's just that...things have been so quiet recently." I said. Tai ran his hand
through my hair.
"You want something to happen? And wasn't what happened with Ikiru enough
excitement for a while?" He asked as his other arm went around me.
I nodded in response. I don't think I would ever want to go through that again,
not that I could anyway. Tai bent down to give me a quick kiss. "You know I love
you." I smiled.
"I know." I answered. "Hey, it's Saturday, isn't it?" I asked. Tai nodded. The
days have been somewhat blurred together for me lately. I didn't have a chance
to say anything more as the phone rang.
"What the...? It's like six in the morning!" Tai said.
"It might be one of our sisters..." I answered him. Tai just grumbled something
and reached over and picked up the phone by the bed.
"Hello?" He answered somewhat groggily. Apparently, the person on the other end
started speaking a bit fast and in a bit of a frenzy.
"Whoa! Hikari, calm down!" He told her. I mouthed at him 'Which one?' I would
love to know what my parents were smoking when they named my sister 'Hikari'. He
pointed at himself to let me know it was his sister and not mine. Which didn't
really surprise me because I couldn't see Nika getting up this early on a
Saturday morning. "Okay, we'll meet with you later today, alright. Let me ask
Koushiro something quick." He turned to me quickly. "Do you think your mom would
baby-sit Ikiru and Hana?" I nodded quickly. She loves those two kids for some
reason. And I was thinking of going there anyway.
"Tai, I was thinking of going there anyway, why don't we all meet there? I'm
sure my parents won't mind. Nika's involved in this, isn't she?" Tai nodded
sadly and in agreement. I sighed as he turned back to the phone. 'Nika-chan, I
know you're going to get hurt. And I don't like it one bit...' I thought to
myself.
"We might as well get up, huh?" I said after Tai finished speaking to his
sister.
"What's the rush?" Tai asked as he straddled me. He bent down and kissed me. I
just melted.
"I guess there isn't that much of one." I answered, smiling. I pulled him back
down to me. A wailing cry broke the romantic atmosphere, however.
"Ah, well." Tai said, grinning. "I'll go check on him." He volunteered himself,
stealing a kiss as he left the room. I just got up and got dressed for the day.
Tai returned, bringing Ikiru with him. "I think he just wants his mommy." Tai
grinned at me. I gave him a mock glare as I took the baby from him.
"Someone is going to get hurt if they keep calling me 'mommy,' aren't they?" I
said, looking into Ikiru's dark eyes, but directing the comment at Tai.
"That's not my fault, Koko." He said. "However, that was your own fault." Tai
smirked at me.
"Come on, I was in a hurry. It's kinda hard to remember how to write your name
when you're out of your mind in pain." I told him. He just grinned.
"It's okay, and it gave me a new nickname for you, so..." He trailed off.
"So, what time are we supposed to meet?" I asked.
"About 10." He answered. A look of pain crossed his face. "I'm glad your family
still accepts us." I sighed. Tai's family had all but forgotten about him. Just
because he chose to live the rest of his life with me. I really felt sad for
him, but his sister still associates with him and me, and my family has accepted
him as one of us.
"Hey, I never thought I'd have so many relatives." I smiled at him. I wrapped my
arms around his waist and stole a small kiss after I had set down Ikiru.
"We're just one, big, happy family, ne?" He laughed nervously.
"It's alright." I told him. I sighed. "Everything will be alright..." I said
quietly, hoping that I was right.
"Ikiru! Koushiro! Tai! How are you guys?" My sister Nika gathered us in a big
hug.
"Geez, Nika," Tai began. "You'd think we live countries apart, not just across
town!" I smiled at that. "Is Kari here yet?" He asked. Nika took her nephew from
me and shook her head.
"No. She said it's just going to be her and Hana though." I shrugged.
"Where's Mom and Dad?" I asked.
"Dad's working, and, well, why don't you take a wild guess where Mom is?" She
said, smiling. I had already wandered towards the kitchen.
"Hi, Mom!" I said, shocking her a bit.
"Koushiro!" She laughed, then turned around to hug me. "How are you, and how's
Ikiru?"
I returned the hug. "We're great, Mom. I do, however have a favor to ask."
"Ask away."
"Would you mind watching Ikiru and Hana for a while today?"
"Of course I will. Where is he, anyway?" She asked.
"Ikiru is with his aunt." I smiled. Nika was only nine and she was already an
aunt!
"You know Nika loves him." Mom said as she turned back to her kitchen counter
which had various baking ingredients scattered across it.
"You're on this baking kick again?" She had a thing for bringing us food back
when we faced MaloMyotismon...It really scared me...that, and the fact that
everyone would thank her in unison...
"Well, just being a good hostess." She smiled at me.
"No, Mom's just wierd." Nika said, walking into the kitchen, still holding
Ikiru.
"Hikari!" I chastised her. Mom just smiled.
"Nika's had an attitude for a while. And she'll just ignore you if you call her
that."
I took Ikiru from Nika and held him while I glared at her. I stood up and handed
Ikiru to Tai. "I think I'm going to have a little talk with my little sister." I
said to Tai's face, but directed the comment at Nika. I grabbed her arm, and
dragged her to her room.
Nika looked down at the floor. "Gomen."
"You should be sorry. Mom is not that wierd, plus, you may not realize this now,
but you should be grateful. You have your parents. You'll never go through what
I did, and for that, I am thankful. Now, are you going to apologize to Mom?" I
asked.
"Yes, I will." She said.
"No time like the present, right?" I told her. Nika nodded and left. I sighed,
and heard the door bell ring. Since I was closest, I answered it.
"Hello, Kari, Hana. Come on in." I invited them.
"Hello, Koushiro. I wish we'd be meeting under better circumstances." Kari
apologized.
"It's alright. I take it you had some sort of a vision." Kari nodded.
"Mom's going to watch the kids while we meet. You can tell us all about it." I
told her. She looked extremely nervous. I put my hand on her shoulder. "It'll be
alright." I told her, trying to get her to relax a bit.
"Thanks for trying." She said. "Come on, Hana, why don't see what 'Grandma' is
doing?" I laughed at that. Mom really has become the unofficial grandmother of
Hana. I don't know how that happened, but...
I followed them back towards the kitchen, where everyone else was. Tai was
sitting at the table, holding our son, Nika was sitting across from them looking
a bit sour. She probably was after what I told her.
"Shall we go in the living room?" I asked. Everyone nodded, and leaving the
children with Mom, we got settled in there. "Alright, Kari, you're the one who
called it, tell us why we're here."
"Well, I had a premonition last night...It involved us, except for you Tai, and,
well...I'm not sure if they were our 'mons or not, but there was Magnadramon,
and a wierd, gold insect, and...Gatomon...which doesn't really make sense to
me..." Kari trailed off.
"I've finally figured out who the gold insect is." I told them, and smiled. "But
you're right about the Gatomon and Magnadramon thing, it doesn't really make
sense..."
"It could be a different Magnadramon..." Tentomon interjected.
"What makes you say that?" I asked.
"Because, the ultimates that can digivolve to a magnadramon are Angewomon,
Okuwamon...and MegaKabuterimon..." That startling revelation made us all stare
at him and Izzy.
"You don't think..." Nika and Kari said at the same time...
"That was freaky..." Tai commented about our sisters doing that.
"I'm starting to think that being named 'Hikari' is a curse." Kari said.
"Don't say that!" Nika said. "That's my name, too, you know."
"Sorry, Nika-chan." Kari apologized. "But I really do. Now, for the big
question...Why would we have the same mega level digimon, assuming, now, of
course that the magnadramon in question is Izzy?"
"Pure, dumb luck?" Izzy suggested. That brought her some glares from a few of
us. "Besides...I can't even reach ultimate, considering that some people around
here think that I'm trying to kill them and won't even let me digivolve to
champion anymore!"
"Calm down, Izzy-chan." Nika told her. "We know you didn't mean it." She said,
quickly glancing at me. "Hey, what's that noise?" Nika asked. Everyone suddenly
became quiet, listening to hear whatever it was that Nika heard.
"Is that..." Tai began.
"The digivices?" I finished his thought for him. I pulled mine out, and he, Nika
and Kari did the same. The two D-3's were beeping wildly, along with mine. "Why
isn't yours beeping?" I asked Tai, and all he could do was shrug.
"Weird, ne?" Nika asked.
"Too wierd..." I trailed off.
"You are needed..."
"Uh...did you guys hear that?" I asked, hoping that I wasn't the only one that
heard the strange voice.
"The Guardian must arrive soon...all will be lost without her..."
I shivered. Kari nodded an answer to my question. Nika looked like she was in a
trance. Tai just looked at us like we were weird. Wait a minute...'Her?' Then
why in the name of anything holy was my digivice going crazy?
"I think we need to get to the Digiworld, and quick." Kari said, trying to keep
her wits about her. I think she was as disturbed as I was. I nodded in
agreement, even though I had a bad feeling about going.
I told Mom what we were doing. I knew I had a sad look on my face when I did it,
but, it couldn't be helped. I looked at Ikiru...'I'm sorry, son...I'll be back
when I can...Grandma will take care of you until then,' I thought at him. Kari
told Hana goodbye and to be a good girl for her while she was gone. At least
Hana's father wasn't coming with us. At least, if we don't make it back...I
won't finish that sentence. I can't finish that sentence.
"Are we ready?" Kari asked, as we gathered around Nika's computer.
"Just about." Nika answered. She quickly grabbed a jacket and was in the process
of putting her shoes on. "Okay, I'm ready." I grinned.
"You're still wearing those?" I asked her.
"Actually, I figured, since they're old, why not?" Nika shrugged.
"You know, I hate to say this, but...I think your sister is turning out be just
like you!" Tai said to me...I took a good look at her. She was wearing my old
shoes, a pair of jeans that looked just comfortably worn...not completely ratty,
but not perfect either, an orange t-shirt with a purple, plaid, flannel shirt
over that...and her computer strapped to her back.
"Unfortunately, I think you're right." I said.
"Okay, guys, what's the joke?" Nika asked as she glared at us from behind her
glasses. Tai and I just grinned. Nika was almost blind without her glasses,
something that she inherited from Dad. I guess I should be lucky I don't have to
put up with that.
"I'll explain it to you later, Nika-chan." I told her. "So, anyone named
'Hikari,' do you mind opening the port?" I asked.
"Don't call me 'Hikari'!" Nika and Kari said in unison.
"Don't talk in unison!" Tai told them. "That's freaky!"
"There are things freakier than that." I told Tai.
"Yeah, like your sister reliving your life."
"Ouch." I replied to that little jab at my family, but I smiled at it anyway.
"Besides, she reminds me of Yolei more."
"Shut up, guys." Nika said, holding her digivice up. "Before I take anymore of
your 'abuse,' Digiport open!" She said quickly and all four of us were sucked in
before we could say anything more.
It seemed like a long while before I was conscious...Wait a second...I sat up,
and immediately felt someone's arms go around me.
"Are you alright?" Tai asked nervously. I nodded, and took a good look around.
"Uh...Tai, would you mind pinching me?" I asked...This place looked so
familiar...Like something from a dream I had... "OW!" I exclaimed as Tai did
what I had asked him to do. "You know, people don't usually actually go ahead
and pinch someone even if they were asked to do it!" I told him.
"Sorry..." Tai said.
"It's alright," I told him. "Where's Nika and Kari?" I asked. I looked down, and
noticed that our 'mons weren't there either. "And the digimon?"
"I don't know." Tai answered. "When we got here, you hit your head, Tentomon and
Izzy disappeared, and, I'm not sure, but I think it might have been a Gennai
clone came and took our sisters..." He paused for a moment. "I'm worried about
them, Koushiro..."
"I am too..." I responded. I was about to say more, when someone walked into the
room. They motioned for us to follow them. Well, I thought it was us. Tai tried
to follow, but the person shook their head no. I looked at him. "I'll be fine."
I said, trying to make the best of it. "I'll be back soon." I said, not sure if
I would be. I stumbled a bit, feeling a bit lightheaded, but quickly regained my
footing.
The strange person led me for a while before I finally asked the question that
had been on my mind. "Where are we going?" I asked.
"You'll find out soon." An unfamiliar girl's voice answered. I just grimaced and
left it at that. We soon stopped at...I'm not exactly sure what it was, but it
was dark.
"Uh..."
"Shush, Koushiro." She commanded me. "Close your eyes and open your heart...and
your mind."
Huh?! How did she know my name? That confused me, but I followed her
instructions.
"Can you see it?" She asked in a voice barely above a whisper.
I opened my eyes, and was a bit surprised. It seemed that I was somewhere else,
and yet, I hadn't moved. This was more familiar than anywhere we'd been yet. As
if to confirm my suspicions, a large dragon flew overhead and landed behind the
young lady.
"There you are, my friend. We have a guest." She told the dragon as it wrapped
it's serpentine body around her.
"Why?" It asked in a low, hissing voice.
"Now, now. You know better than to ask that." She told the dragon. "My friend is
suspicious of anyone who finds this place. It is sacred to many." She explained
to me. I just nodded, afraid to speak. "You should feel special, as you were
actually invited."
"May I ask a couple of questions?" I asked, hoping I wouldn't get the same
answer as she gave to her dragon friend. Who looked suspiciously familiar...I
swear that's the same purple color that Izzy had retained through all her
evolutions...It can't be though...I pray to the higher beings that are listening
that it's not her...That's not Nika, either...If it is, something really wierd
is going on.
"Please, go ahead and ask. I cannot guarantee an answer, however." The young
lady answered me. That was something, anyway.
"First, what is this place, and why was I, of all people, chosen to be invited?"
I asked, a little bit scared of the answer.
She laughed. "Why, the answer to both is in your name." She giggled. I knew I
had a confused look on my face. What in the name of anything holy did that have
to do with anything? She smiles as she continued. "Legend tells of a place where
only the pure hearted and open minded souls converge, here in the Digital World.
And it has been without it's guardian for almost 25 years." She said.
'Twenty-five years?' I thought to myself. "And, usually, it's guardian is named
for the object. This should answer your questions," She said as she suddenly
became smaller than she just was and took the more familiar shape
of..."brother." Nika finished.
"Nika!" That did answer a lot.
"There's just one little matter to clear up." Nika said. I held my breath,
awaiting to hear this. She raised her head and met my eyes. "You knew, and you
didn't tell me." Now I was really confused.
"Knew what, Nika?" I asked.
"That...AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!" She fell to her knees, screaming in pain. The
dragon screamed in perfect unison with her.
"Nika!" I cried, not quite sure what to do. And totally scared to do anything,
to tell the truth. "I don't have a clue as to what's going on, so how could I
have known whatever it is that I was supposed to have?"
Nika seemed to regain her composure, but somehow seemed different. Her eyes
didn't look right. "You're right, Koushiro...just...just don't let her win..." A
voice that wasn't Nika's came out of her mouth. It sounded familiar, but I
couldn't place it at the moment.
The dragon was slowly coming around. I looked around, hoping for somewhere to
run to and hide, but there wasn't much of a chance of that.
"I...can't...let you...hurt her..." The dragon said slowly, taking to flight
with its feathery wings that seemed too small to lift the large body. She
started gathering energy around her forepaws. I suddenly had a sense of
deja-vu. Only this time, Kabuterimon wasn't around to save me. Her low voice
growled out, announcing her attack this time..."Dragon..." She never finished as
an unannounced attack hit her. I turned my head around to confirm my suspicions.
It was what I thought it was, but, now the question was 'is that _who_ I think
it is?'.
I didn't know if I dared ask, but I did anyway. "Tentomon?" I asked incredously.
"Finally figured it out, huh?" He retorted.
"I didn't think you could reach mega!" I said, the events surrounding this
leaving my mind for a moment.
"Well, until this little problem is over, don't worry about it!" He told me,
circling around to attack again.
"Don't hurt her!" I hollered to him. "I think it's Izzy!"
"I'll take it under advisement." He answered.
"I'll deal with Nika." I said. I moved closer to her. "Nika-chan?" I asked,
hoping she was herself for the moment.
"I...I'm alright...I think..." She answered, and fainted away again.
