~This is it. This is where I shall find my heart..~ Ken thought as he wondered the vast and damaged Digital World.

The Digital World that had been ruined at his hands. He found it hard to believe how one boy could cause so much destruction to this magical world.

He kept his mind focused on his sins of the past as he wandered through the stone-filled grounds, the endless desert and finally an emerald land of flowers.

He'd forgotten who his parents were, who he was.

He was now on the journey to find himself again. He remembered Osamu, though. Throughout his entire sleep, he dreamt of nothing but his past with Osamu Ichijouji, his older brother who past away when he was just a little child.. and all because of a stupid wish and feelings of jealousy..

But now, he'd done his searching for his past, he had to do his searching for his future and that meant to find Wormmon and his heart. Here, in the Digital World.

This place was hot. It felt too hot. But the feeling was familiar, like he'd been here before.

That's when he saw it. A vast, green valley. Colorful, small buildings were everywhere. Not only that, but there were Digieggs. They were all over the ground, scattered everywhere. They were all kinds of colors and no digiegg was the same as another.

~Digieggs. Thousands of them. What is this place?~

As if on que, a little voice answered that question.

"This is the Primary Village. This is where the digimon come to be reborn." Said the little, white Poyomon before him.

It was sitting in a tiny, brown, basket-looking crib.

"Reborn?" Ken answered.

"Yes."

"Wormmon, too?"

"That's right."

He couldn't help but let a small laugh of relief escape his lips and he ran from the small digimon into the valley of digieggs.

He paused in the middle of them. "..But.. which one's.. Wormmon's? I don't know... I've forgotten what it looked like!"

Another small digimon, a Yuramon, caught his attention. "You're the Digimon Emperor, aren't you?" It asked, then scuffed. "I'd recognize you even without your fancy costumes!"

~The Digimon Emperor? Yes, I am--~

The digimon leapt up at full speed and tried to attack Ken but Ken blocked the tiny digimon with his arm. The digimon flew back down with hard force to its cradle.

"Yes, you're right. I was the Digimon Emperor. I remember now..."

A little, red Punimon spoke up. "Why would you bother searching for Wormmon anyway? You only want to find Wormmon so you'll stop feeling guilty for what you did to him and to millions of others! He won't come back just to be treated badly by you all over again!" The digimon's eyes narrowed.

~This is it. This is the truth I don't want to face. Wormmon's not coming back... Just like Osamu didn't come back. ...What have I done?~

"Why don't you just go away and leave us alone!"

Then, another voice spoke behind him, more so to the side of him. It was another little digimon. This digimon was a Botamon, a tiny, black digimon with yellow eyes.

"Yes," It said to Ken. "you've caused enough trouble here. So why don't you go crawl back under the control spire you came out of!" The digimon snapped.

That did it.

Ken fell upon his knees, broken and hurt by their words.

He dared not look them in the face, he kept his head down so his dark hair covered his eyes and began to cry. His tears soaked the soft, winter-rye grass under him.

"Please.. Can't I have another chance? I know I've caused you all a lot of pain and I'm truly sorry. The evil things I did as the Digimon Emperor will never leave me but I have to move on with my life. I can't stay in the past, letting it rip me and my friends apart--"

"Friends? I hope you're not talking about us! We're not you're friends and never will be. We aren't going to welcome you back with open arms!" The Punimon said with narrowed eyes.

"You're a monster, remember?!" The Yuramon snapped.

Ken let out a gasp of despair.

~I should've known better than to think they'd forgive me..~

"That's right," The Botamon continued, interrupting Ken's thoughts. "We're not gonna forgive you! You've made your bed now lay in it!"

Ken's crying grew more desperate as they sat there in silence with no words of comfort to give.

"I.. I know I.. I can't change what I've done. All I can do is learn from it and try to help you. I'm trying to be kind ..and trying to find the good memories in me but all I can remember are all the bad ones. They haunt me over and over!"

He looked downward at his hands.

"And these hands.." He whispered, bringing them close to his chest, his eyes grew dark with anger and filled with hate.

"These hands have caused so much pain. They're dirty and stained with blood. Lives of many, tortured and dead, lay in them. ..Put a text book in them and I'm the boy genius. But put a whip in them and I'm the evil Digimon Emperor. All those memories are bad. I must think back. I must try to find where it began. Where the goodness had left me."

He clinched his hands into his hair as he thought hard, about his past.

: : : Flashback : : :

The desert sands blew wildly as Ken, Wormmon and his best friend, Ryo and the digimon, Veemon wandered through it.

Ken and his friend were only 9 years old at that time. They were searching for something. He couldn't remember what.

Everything seemed okay at first then, the gray, red-eyed digimon with catlike features leapt up out of the sand to attack the young children.

Wormmon jumped forward and blocked the digimon's attack. The blow knock Wormmon to the ground as the digimon fled away.

Little Ken reached down for Wormmon and held him in his warm arms, softly. His vibrant, lavender shirt brushing gently, against Wormmon's body.

"Wormmon?! Are you okay?" Ken asked, tears glittering his glorious eyes.

Wormmon's azure eyes opened, slowly. "Yeah. It'll take more than that to hurt me."

"I'm glad you're okay." He hugged the little worm close to him.

"Ken?"

"Yes?"

"That digivice.. belongs to you, not your brother. You are Digidestined and no one can ever take that away from you. You must be gentle and kind."

"Kay." Young Ken squeaked out, pulling away from the hug to look his digimon in the face.

Wommon only blinked. "But being gentle is not enough, you must be strong, full of kindness. Evil will try to tell you otherwise, but you must not listen to them. Never forget who you are, Ichijouji Ken, full of kindness."

Ken smiled at his friend. "I won't."

All at once, their eyes seemed to lock; bright, azure burning into deep, ocean blue.

Softly, Wormmon asked of Ken.

"Promise?"

: : : End Flashback : : :

Ken's eyes rose from the ground to the digimon before him, realization burning in them, mixed with crystal tears.

"But I broke my promise. I did forget. I'd forgotten who I was. I let Wormmon down. I let him and my whole family down! If only I had the chance, I.. I'd say.. I'm sorry Osamu!"

He kept his hands clinched into his hair and he lifted his gaze to the empty sky above. His scream filled the entire village.

"I'm sorry Wormmon!!"

His body lowered as his arms clinched to his chest, hard.

"I kept trying to fill my parents wish to have their perfect, genius child that I ignored who I was. I was trying to be my brother! I have never been Ken."

His eyes shut tight, angry with himself for his foolishness.

"But from now on, I will be the kind and gentle person Wormmon wanted me to be!" The tears streamed down his face and his hands were shaking.

That's when it happened. A pink, radiant light flashed from the left side of his chest where the heart was. The very heart he'd came to find.

His heart.

His eyes opened quickly as a gasp escaped his lips. "W-What's that?"

"It's your Crest of Kindness." One of the digimon told Ken, a happy tone shown in its voice. "It reacted to you."

Ken pulled the little crest out of the left pocket of his white, Tamachi shirt.

His crest was pink with a rose of the same color carved into it. The crest glowed in his hand as he stood up and looked out over the valley of digieggs.

At the same time, lil' Leafmon awoke within his digiegg.

"Ken?" He whispered. "Come find me.. Hurry."

Ken watched a digiegg light up with the color of his crest. He wandered over to it. It was white with pink hearts on it.

"Hurry. Find me, Ken, please.." Leafmon whispered, his leaf moving in the small egg.

Ken paused. "Wait, this digiegg is different from the others. It's glowing like the crest. I wonder if..."

He reached down and touched the egg with both hands in an attempt to pick it up but it glowed even brighter. It glowed so bright that it caused Ken to back away and cover his eyes for a moment. The light faded as Ken brought his arm down from over his eyes.

A tiny, brown cradle appeared with a small, green digimon that had a leaf rising from a stem on his head and small, long ears laying inside the cradle. It opened its dark, shinning eyes and looked up at Ken, seeming very happy.

"W-who are you?" Ken whispered as other digimon watched from the far distance.

"Hi, Ken." The digimon whispered, his voice very soft. "I'm Leafmon, the baby form of Wormmon."

Leafmon didn't even get to finish his sentence when Ken began crying.. Yet again.

But this time, they weren't tears of pain, they were tears of joy.

"..My Wormmon.. You came back.."

Leafmon smiled. "Did ya miss me?"

Ken nodded, little strands of hair stuck to his cheeks from the tears.

Ken knelt down on his knees and picked Leafmon up out of the cradle gently, holding him close. "I kept searching for you. I never stopped."

"Thank you, Ken. You took a little detour in getting' there but you kept your promise." Leafmon said. His voice calming Ken by the second.

"W-what promise?" Ken asked, slightly confused, feeling like he'd broken his only promise to Wormmon.

"..Being kind and gentle." Leafmon replied.

Ken sniffled, fighting the on coming sobs. "Thank you Leafmon, for giving me a second chance."

"You're welcome, Ken." Leafmon whispered as warm tears began to stream down his pink cheeks.

"Ai shiteru, Leafmon." Ken whispered as he held Leafmon's cheek closed against his own.

"Ai shiteru, Ken..." Leafmon replied, caressing Ken's cheek with his fur. (Doesn't Leafmon have fur? I guess so. :)

~I wonder..~ Ken thought once more while standing up to return home. ~..would Leafmon be the only one who misses me? ..No, I don't think so.~

"Did you say something, Ken?" Leafmon asked, opening his eyes.

"Hmm.. Just thinking..."

Leafmon sighed with a smile. "You think too much, Ken."

Ken chuckled softly, resulting in a tiny giggle from Leafmon.

"Ya don't have ta tell me that twice."
