(Nine)

(No one's POV)

The Keeper of the Castle watched the battle far below. MaloMyotismon had been winning until all of the Digimon had Digivolved to Mega.

"DarknessWizardmon! Who will be the victor of this battle?"

DarknessWizardmon looked up at the Keeper of the Castle. "If the Children are allowed to battle this way, then they will win."

"But without the other Chosen Child, they are crippled, are they not?"

"Yes. With the one named Daisuke in the Realm of Darkness, and his partner Veemon in MaloMyotismon's cage, there is no way that they can win."

~*~*~*~

"My bonnie lies over the ocean, my bonnie lies over the sea. My bonnie lies over the ocean, so bring back my bonnie to me." Veemon sang tiredly.

Suddenly, he was engulfed in a bright light.

"Eh? What's this? Woo, I feel strange. Veemon, Warp Digivolve to... Imperialdramon!" Imperialdramon broke free from the cage. "Hang on Daisuke, I'm coming!"

~*~*~*~

"You're positive that the Digimon will not escape?" The Keeper of the Castle asked.

"Well, yes. It was designed to keep any Rookie inside it forever."
Imperialdramon rushed past them.

"Of course, it probably wouldn't hold a Mega." DarknessWizardmon grinned as an afterthought.

~*~*~*~

Daisuke lay in the Dark, exhausted, cold, and hungry.

"Daisuke! Daisuke!"
"What the..?"
"Daisuke, where are yo- oh." Imperialdramon said, lifting his foot.

"Everything around here either wants to kill me or run over me around here." Daisuke grumbled.

"Sorry about that."
"That's what Aquilamon said... Twice..."

"Sorry, now hang on!"
Within seconds, they were out of the Realm of Darkness.

"It's so bright out here."
"Look! It's the otheres!"
"Yeah! Hey, there's Hikari!"
"What the..?" MaloMyotismon wondered.

~*~*~*~

(Yamato's POV)
I had just lost my best friend. There was no way MaloMyotismon was going to get away with this. "Omnimon! Let's go!"
"Right. Transendant Sword!" A huge sword appeared in Omnimon's hand, and with it he attacked MaloMyotismon.

"Starlight Explosion!" Phoenixmon.

"Thorn Whip!" Rosemon.

"High-Meg Blaster!" HerculesKabuterimon.

"Ocean Love!" MarineAngemon.

"Fire Tornado!" Magnadramon.

"Seven Heavens!" Seraphymon.

"Positron Laser!" Imperialdramon, the Mega form of Veemon.

"Ferir Sword!" Valkirymon.

"Chroner Detonation!" Vikmon.

"Dimensional Scissors!" GrandKuwagamon.

"Giant Missile!" SaintGargomon.

"Lightning Joust!" Gallantmon.

"Spirit Strike!" Sakuyamon.

"Twin Fang!" SaberLeomon.

"Double Impact!" Beelzemon.

"Rainbow Feather!" Supremon.

"Legendary Claw!" Gryphonmon.

"Blue Lightning!" Azulongmon.

"Cable Crusher!" Diaboromon.

"Darkness Zone!" Apocalymon.

"Heavenly Light!" Yasoshaymon.

"Trinity Arm!" Justimon.

"Lightning Spear!" Kerpymon.

It was amazing, seeing all of those attacks at once...

MaloMyotismon howled in pain. "No! I WILL rule! I shall not be defeated by the likes of you!" "Wanna bet? Omnimon, finish it!"
"Garuru Cannon!"
"NO!!!!"

"It's... over... It's finally over..." I said, relieved.

"Not yet, Yamato." Omnimon said. "Look."
"Huh?" I turned toward where he was pointing. The castle. The castle was glowing a deep crimson.

"What the...?" Takeru wondered.

A figure jumped from the very top of the castle and somehow landed perfectly on its toes.

"Congratulations, Chosen Children. You have done very well." She said.

She looked like a cross between Angewomon and Sakuyamon. Tall and graceful, a bushy yellow tail, like that of a fox, and beautiful silky wings. Her face had the features of a cross between a cat and a fox- mysterious, yet deadly...

"You have gone through the maze, faced its dangers, completed its tasks. You have defeated FuegoDiaboromon, OmegaBasianmon, and MaloMyotismon. You are a very strong team."

"Who are you? And what do you want?"
"I am Menanakanamon, and I wish to invite you tho the castle to rest and heal your injuries.

"Some of our injuries... Cannot be healed." Sora said.

Menanakanamon nodded slowly. "A troubled heart cannot be healed with rest of medicine, but with time. I grieve for you, who have lost a true friend. Now, do you wish to come with me?"
"How do we know we can trust you? You may be another tool of evil. Or, maybe, the evil itself." Yasoshaymon said suspiciously.

"You are wise not to trust right away. But you have defeated the evils, I assure you."

"Then, I and the other Digimon of Legends Long Forgotten-"
Kerpymon and Justimon gave a cough.

"...And Kerpymon and Justimon... Will do what the humanswill do."

"Well then, what is it that the humans decide?"
Everyone turned to look at me. My mouth went dry. They expected me to decide for them. But what if I made the wrong decision? Now I knew what Taichi had been going through...

"I guess... We go in." I said, still unsure. Menanakanamon smiled and led us to the castle.

~*~*~*~

We were all sitting down, enjoying our meal, when a Gekomon came rushing in.

"Sir Yamato! Sir Yamato! The Lady wishes to see you."
'The Lady' was Menanakanamon.

"Really? Well, okay." I said, following the Gekomon through many corridors, up stairways, and down others.

"The Lady is inside here." Gekomon said, opening the door. I walked inside and noticed that the room was dark and dreary.

"Menanakanamon?"
"I am here, Yamato."
"You wanted to see me?"
"Yes. I have been watching you, Yamato, and I have noticed that there is a strange heaviness inside your heart. Tell me, Yamato, what is it that is wrong?"
I sighed. "I'm not sure where to start."
She nodded. "Maybe some tea would help you ease your troubles."
"Yeah, sure." I said.

Menanakanamon poured me a cup, and I drank it gladly. It seemed to have a strangely bitter aftertaste, though.
"What kind of tea is this?" I asked.
"Poison." She smirked. I dropped the cup on the floor, and heard it break. My eyes widened.

"W- What?" I stammered, watching as she left the room.

"I'll be back, Yamato." She hissed.

I sank to the floor, my stomach churning violently.

~*~*~*~

(Sora's POV)

I declined the invitation to dinner. I wanted to be alone, so I sat in the garden near a delicate marble fountain.

"What's wrong, Lady Sora?" A Gekomon asked me.

"Hm? Oh, nothing. I'm fine."
"Okay, then." He said, returning to his gardening.

"Sora. I thought I would find you here."
"Hm? Oh, hello, Menanakanamon." I greeted her, turning back to the fountain.

"You seem troubled. Tell me, what is on your mind?"
"Taichi..."
"Ah..."
"He was one of my best friends, and I loved him. But, now he's..." I started crying.

"I understand how you feel. I have lost someone close to me recently as well."
"Y- You have?" I asked, drying my eyes with a tissue.

"Yes. I'm wondering, do you enjoy tea?"

"Tea? Well, yes, sometimes."
"Then would you care to join me? The Gekomon make an absolutely delicious tea."
I smiled. "Sure."
As soon as I said that, I saw two Gekomon bringing a pot of tea and two tiny china tea cups. They poured us the tea, and left. I sipped a little of it.

"Do you like it?"
"Yes. It has a strange taste, though... A little bitter."
Menanakanamon nodded and walked away. "I'll be back soon." She informed me. I couldn't help but notice that she had not touched her tea.

But I pushed that thought aside and nodded, also noticing my stomach was starting to do backflips and cartwheels.

'What was in that tea?' I asked myself silently.

I walked around the huge garden. It seemed to go on and on. I finally came to a door in one of the walls. I stared at it, wondering if I should go in.

"I wouldn't go in there..." A Gekomon said.

"Why? What's in there?"
"Well, first of all, everybody says that that doorway leads to an ancient and totally secret burial chamber. And down there are all sorts of ghosts and ancient evils that will be awakedned if you open that door and go down the corridor..."

"That's silly."

"Okay, if you want to go down there you can, but don't say I didn't warn you!" He said, rushing back to trim the bushes.

I stared at the door, and finally decided to open it.

~*~*~*~

It took a while to get to the bottom of the staircase, but when I finally got down there, it was just a big, long corridor. So, I walked on and on until I reached another door. I pushed that one open, too.

And what I saw nearly gave me a heart attack.

~*~*~*~

(Hikari's POV)

It wasn't fair. My only brother ...gone... For a long time, I cried as Yamato held me. His shirt was soaked afterwards, but he didn't seem to mind. We later went down to eat the dinner that the Gekomon had prepared. Clam chowder, chicken, rice, and salad.

I didn't feel like eating, but I thought it would be best if I had just a little, so as not to seem rude.

"Sir Yamato! Sir Yamato! The Lady wishes to see you." A Gekomon told him.

"Really? Well, okay." Yamato said, getting up.

I got up a minute later and headed in the direction that they did. I was luckily able to catch up with them. I didn't trust 'The Lady', Menanakanamon, or her castle. The Gekomon were okay, though. But it was just something about her that worried me. She was just too nice, and she had only appeared after we had defeated MaloMyotismon. If she was really on our side, whe had she waited until we were very weak and tired to show herself?

"You're suspicious, too?" Nyaromon asked. After the fight, all of the Digimon except for the Allies had DeDigivolved back to their In-Training forms.

I nodded as we silently followed.

"The Lady is inside here." The Gekomon informed him. I hid behind a large column and waited. A while later, I saw Menanakanamon leave. But Yamato hadn't come out yet! Nyaromon and I snuck into the room.

There, we saw Yamato lying on the floor, shivering.

"Yamato? Yamato, what's wrong?"

"It's all so cold, Hikari." He said, his eyes blank.

"Yamato, what happened?"
"Menanakanamon... Poisoned tea... Stomach hurts ...my heart feels like it's going to fast..." He gasped.

"I knew we couldn't trust her..." Nyaromon growled.

I nodded. "Yes, but we can't stop her like this. Yamato, are you going to be okay? Yamato?" I gave him a little shake.

"Hm? Yeah, yeah... I'll be fine." He said. Then, he tried to stand up, but ended up sitting back down. "My legs feel... like jelly."

"Here." I said, helping him up.

"Thanks..."

We walked down the halls, as I looked for Jyou. He was the brains in the medical department. He'd know what to do. Finally, I found him.

"Hikari! Hey, do you know where the bathroom is? I've really got to... What happened to Yamato?" He asked.

"Menanakanamon's tea... Poisoned..." Yamato muttered.

"Oh, great. And here I thought Menanakanamon was one of the good guys... Well, come on, we've got to get you some medicine." He said, leading us away.

"You're not going anywhere, Chosen Ones." I turned around.

"Menanakanamon!" Nyaromon growled. "Nyaromon, Warp Digivolve to... Gatomon! Lightning Paw!"
Menanakanamon laughed. "Fallen Angel Fox Claw!"
Gatomon screamed, and reverted back to Nyaromon. "Sorry, Hikari... I tried..." She said weakly.

"It's okay. You're still tired."
"We're not giving up that easily! Bukamon, Warp Digivolve to... Ikkakumon! Harpoon Torpedo!"
Menanakanamon jumped out of the way. "Fools! Do you really think you can defeat me? I am invincible! Fallen Angel Fox Claw!"
Ikkakumon, to, DeDigivolved back to Bukamon.

"Now what?" Jyou asked.

"Yamato! Hang on!" Gabumon called, running towards us.

Of course! How could I have forgotten? Gabumon, Agumon, and Biyomon had all rturned to their Rookie forms insteal of their In-Training.

"Gabumon..?" Yamato asked weakly.

"Yes. Hold on. Gabumon, Warp Digivolve to... MetalGarurumon! Ice Wolf Bite!" Menanakanamon jumped out of the way.

"Do you really think you can defeat me? Don't you understand that you cannot win? Fallen Angel Fox Claw!"
MetalGarurumon dodged the attack. "Metal Wolf Claw!"
"Fallen Angel Fox Claw!"
MetalGarurumon didn't jump out of the way fast enough this time. He gave a roar and DeDigivolved back to Gabumon. "Blue... Blaster!"

Menanakanamon batted the attack away. "How can you expect to win?" She laughed.

"Why are you... Doing this?" Jyou asked.

"Because of you, Chosen Children."
"Us?" I wondered.

She nodded. "Yes. But mostly because of the Holders of Love, Friendship, and Courage. The Holders of the Sacred Crests were responsible for the death of my brother, MaloMyotismon. I was only going to poison the Holder of Friendship, because of his Digivolution, but then I realized that all the Sacred Crest Holders must die."
"So you poisoned Sora as well." I said.

"Not yet, but I will soon. Very soon." She grinned.

"You monster!" Nyaromon growled.

"Thank you." She replied darkly. "DarknessWizardmon? Take them all down to the dungeons." She said.

"Of course. Mysterious Riddles!"
We immediately found ourselves in a dark, damp cave, lit only by the small flickering candles.

"How did we get here?"

"Where's... Gabumon?" Yamato asked.

"I'm right here, Yamato. Are you all right?"
"I think so... I still don't feel well... My stomach hurts really bad... I need to sit down..." He groaned, obviously in more pain than he was letting us know about.

I nodded. "Maybe we can find some sort of antidote for the poison in here."

"Why do you say that, Hikari?" Bukamon asked.

"Take a look around you. This doesn't look like a dungeon to me. More like an apothecary."
"Apatawhat?" Nyaromon asked.

"An apothecary. Like a place with lots of herbs that can be used for medicines." Jyou explained, searching the shelves.

"Hey, this looks like it's been used recently!" Bukamon exclaimed.

Jyou and I ran over to the small floating Digimon.

Jyou read the label. "Pukumon Poison... Deadly when mixed with a Fralamon's Toadstool Poison..." He looked at the notes and book that was under the small bottle.

"It's a diary of some sort..." He muttered. "Here's today's entry... The Chosen Children have waged war on us in the hopes that they will get back the one called Daisuke... They have defeated FuegoDiaboromon and OmegaBasianmon. MaloMyotismon is fighting them now... The Holders of the Sacred Crests have allowed all of the Digimon to Digivolve to the Mega Level... The Courage Holder has fallen, yet his Digimon still stands with great power. ...MaloMyotismon has fallen at the Chosen Children's hands.

"I will avenge my brother... There is not enough Fralamon poison for two cups of tea... ...I have decided to place it in the Holder of Friendship's glass, for it was his Digimon's final attack that caused my brother's demise... There is a cure for the Frala/Pukumon poison, unfortunately..." Jyou trailed off.

"Well... What is it?" Yamato asked.

"It, uh... ends there..." Jyou said.

"Great! This is just great!" I yelled angrily, sitting down on the ground. "I can't do this... I can't lose my brother and you, Yamato..."

He slowly walked towards me and put his arm around me. "It's okay, Hikari... Nothing bad is going to happen anymore... I'm going to make sure of that..." He whispered quietly.

I looked up into his deep blue eyes and nodded. "Thank you."
