Meet The Tachikawas - Joe's POV

Let's see now… I'm dressed neatly, a bunch of flowers for Mimi fresh from Mrs Takenouchi's flower shop, a heart shaped box of chocolates and… am I forgetting something? Oh hi. I'm Joe Kido and as you noticed I'm getting ready for an important appointment. Sigh! I make it sound like a chore, don't I? Actually I'm getting ready for a date with Mimi Tachikawa a very good friend of mine. Okay! It's not a "date-date" but still it's very important to me. You see tonight is a little different, she has invited me over for dinner, WITH HER PARENTS!

No, I have no problem with her parents, actually I don't even know that much about them. Still the pressure is on me, you see, I want to make the right impression. I want to show them that I am not someone who would take advantage of their daughter. The wrong impression at this small dinner party could have costly repercussions towards my lasting friendship with Mimi and even worse, it could totally blow my romantic chances with her as well. Let's just hope that being neatly dressed and well mannered will win them over. Now if only I could find an aftershave to splash on me that won't affect my allergies. Yes I know what your thinking, a kid using aftershave, well anything that will help me make a good impression with Mimi's parents will be welcomed with open arms.

"Joe! Are you ready to go yet?" a familiar voice calls out.

That is my brother Jim. He has been kind enough in offering to take me to Mimi's place. With my father and mother out of town at a doctor's convention this week, Jim was the only person available to take me. Besides, my father is still a bit peeved about what happened last week when he took to the hospital where he works. What happened? Well let's just say it's not at all funny to shout out "HELLO NURSE!" in the hospital's staff room.

"I'll be there in a minute." I reply.

Time to do a double check. Neatly dressed. Check! Well-groomed. Check! Box of chocolates. Check! Flowers. Check! Card?… Card?… Card?… Oh, here it is. Yikes! I forgot to write a message in the card that came with the bouquet of flowers! What to write? It has to be special, something that will express my true feelings for her. It has to be witty, yet serious. Deep with symbolic meaning but simple enough to understand. It has to… come from the heart.

A quick mental debate later…

I don't know how I came to this conclusion. Maybe from watching too many of those romantic movies that Mimi drags me to. Oh! Didn't you know? I guess you are expecting an explanation from me. Very well, you see, while Mimi and I haven't "DATED" we have spent a lot of time together as friends. You know? Hanging out at malls, going to the movies, the sort of thing that FRIENDS do.

Back to the matter at hand. I decided to write one of those overused Rose are Red, Violets are Blue poems in the card. Original? No! Other options? None! Okay maybe there are other options but I can't seem to think of any right now. The problem is that my mind goes numb everytime I think of Mimi. Definitely my Archille's Heel, it prevents me from be suave and confident in front of her. Although I don't think I had those qualities to begin with. Anyway, back to the card. A nagging thought at the back of my head reminds me to limit my use of metaphors. Why? If you pay close attention to Mimi personality then you would realise that she prefers people to speak their minds and not hide their feelings behind cleverly formed sentences containing soulless metaphors. A simple and direct poem is what I must write. Hmmm, I can't think of anything right now but you can rely on me come up with something sooner or later. I just hope that it comes sooner rather than later.

"Joe!" my brother calls as he enters my room, "Are you ready to go yet? You don't want to keep your girlfriend waiting do you?"

"I'm almost ready. Don't rush me!" I snap back at Jim. "And she's not my girlfriend… yet." I continue, my face registering a dark shade of crimson as I think of the idea of Mimi and me as a couple and drift off into a daydream.

I'm brought back to reality by my brother, who resorts to shaking me about like a rag doll.

"Joe! Joe! Earth to Joe! Wake up!" he says to me as I try to quickly regain my senses.

"I'm sorry. I must have been day-dreaming again." I reply.

And what a daydream it was. It was like a scene straight out of the Sound Of Music. Mimi and myself frolicking carefree in a meadow filled with many different varieties of flowers - many of which would cause my sinuses constant grief - accompanied by a cheesy love song playing in the background.

"Let me do just one last thing and then we can leave. Okay Jim?" I ask.

"Okay fine." He shrugs.

I quickly grab a pen and scribble in the card. It was a good thing that I was day-dreaming because it gave me inspiration for what I should write in the card. I then stuffed it into my breast pocket of my jacket and called out to Jim.

"Okay Jim. I'm ready to go."

"Great. I'll get the car warmed up." Jim says as he gives me the thumbs up sign.

I gather up the flowers with card as well as the box of chocolates and then leave my room.

PLACE: Apartment complex car park TIME: 18:35 PM

Beautiful, isn't it? Jim's yellow VW beetle or The Road Queen as he likes to call it.

"Come on! Are you ready to go yet?" he asks me.

"Okay. I'm ready." I answer cautiously.

I've never been in his car before but I heard his driving skills have given him quite a reputation. I've heard him been called by the nickname Kamikaze Kido by his friends. The Drag Racing King Of Odaiba is another nickname but I think it's just a rumour. I mean, Drag Racing is illegal and Jim wouldn't compete in it, would he?

Upon entering the car, I noticed how spacious it was. Leather interior, stereo as well as some other electronic equipment that would probably require a Ph.D. in computers to operate.

"What do you think?"

"Huh?"

"What do you think of the car?" Jim repeats.

"It's… very smart." A questioning look is all my answer gets from Jim.

"Very, very smart, best car ever, fantastic achievement in automobile excellence." I continue trying to be as sincere as possible. Reason being that my knowledge of cars is minimal. Thankfully Jim's expression has changed, he is quite pleased with my praise of his car.

"Fasten your seat belt." Jim instructs me as he turns the ignition key.

VROOOOOOMMM!!!

The engine roars, audible to anyone within a two-mile radius. Jim shifts into gear, releases the hand brake and the car bolts forward like a bullet.

My expression paled. I sank deeper into my seat. My heart rate increased and my body was numb with terror. We had just travelled out of the apartment's parking lot and already I was filled with dread. Without warning the car shot off into the streets of Odaiba.

"Jim, could you please drive a little slower?" I pleaded.

"Why little brother?"

"Well…" I began. "I not sure if this seat belt is safe, it feels a little loose on me."

"Don't worry about that Joe." He reassured me. "It's perfectly safe, besides this car has driver and passenger side airbags."

"Sorry Jim but I hardly find the prospect of having half a zeppelin being rammed into my face comforting."

Jim lets out a small chuckle before turning his attention back to the road. Then without any warning…

SCREEEEEECH!!!!!!

"WHY DID YOU STOP!" I practically screamed as I was jerked forward.

"Er… the traffic lights are red. It usually means that I should stop." He replied somewhat sarcastically. "Why are you so on edge tonight?"

At least he remembers the Highway Code, however I felt a bit bad for snapping at him like that, so I apologised.

"I'm sorry Jim. It's just that I'm meeting Mimi's parents tonight and I'm a little nervous."

"Oh! So that's why."

"Huh? What are you trying to saaaaaaaaaaayy-" I could hardly finish my question when the lights changed green and caused the car to zoom off into the distance.

The next couple of minutes were a blur to me, actually I had my eyes closed for the remainder of the journey. However what my sight had missed my sense of hearing didn't. Jim's driving had prompted honking and verbal obscenities from other road users.

In addition, plenty of SCREECHING noises.

SCREEEEEECH!!!!!!

Déjà vu.

"WE'RE HERE!" announced Jim.

I opened my eyes and couldn't believe it. We had made it to the Tachikawa apartment in ONE piece.

I gathered up the gifts for Mimi and got out of the car. What I saw next gave me an uneasy feeling, leading from the car and stretching into the distance were tire marks. Talk about burning rubber.

"See you later Joe." Jim called out to me as he pulled away.

"Er… bye." I said waving nervously.

Finally, after convincing my stomach that the intense white-knuckle ride was over, I made my way to the Tachikawa's apartment. Unfortunately, the elevator was out of order so I had to trek up several flights of stairs.

Later…

Huffing and puffing I arrived at the Tachikawa's door. How do I know that this is the Tachikawa's place? Well if you look carefully at the door, you will notice a wooden nameplate with a carving of Mimi and her parents.

PLACE: Tachikawa's apartment door TIME: 18:58 PM

I checked my watch, two minutes to spare, it gave me a moment to catch my breath. The hike up those stairs had made me a little tired. It's lucky that I'm in pretty good shape, otherwise I'd be exhausted. After catching my breath, I quickly gave myself one last check over to see if I was presentable.

All that separated me from my true love was a wooden door. I slowly extended my arm and rang the doorbell.

It's one of those theme door chimes that plays a well-known tune. In stereo no less.

"What is love" By Haddaway to be precise. *Play*

What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more

Catchy tune…

Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more

Head bobbing commences…

What is love
Yeah

Foot tapping follows…

Oh I don't know
why you're not fair
I give you my love
but you don't care
So what is right
and what is wrong
gimme a sign

Finally, my whole body starts swaying in rhythm to the music…

What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh

Arms swaying, pelvis thrusting, head bobbing and plenty of booty shaking is going on. I don't care, I know I'm not the most graceful of people, my dancing resembles the movements of a crab with mad cows disease but so what?!

Oh I don't know
what can I do
what else can I say
it's up to you
I know we're one
just me and you
I can't go on
What is love ?...
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more

I close my eyes and allow my body to act on it's own. It's only me and the music now…

What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh

Unknown to me, the door opens…

What is love
What is love
What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more

I continue my dance routine unconcerned…

Don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
I want no other
No other lover
This is your life
our time
When we are together
I need you forever
Is it love

Eat your heart out Ricky Martin, check out these dance steps…

What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh

Why not? I start to sing along with the song…

What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
What is love ?...
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more

"What is love?!"

I shout out while striking a pose straight out of Saturday Night Fever that John Travolta would be proud of.

CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!

"HUH!?!"

I open my eyes…

Oh boy! There before me stand the two senior members of the Tachikawa clan applauding my little dance routine.

Talk about embarrassing… so much for first impressions.

"Er… good evening Mr. And Mrs. Tachikawa." I greet them, desperately trying to cover up the fact that I'm blushing violently.

"Evening Joe." Greets Mrs. Tachikawa, who seems to be having a tough time trying to surpress her giggles.

Mr. Tachikawa however, can only nod with both hands covering his mouth to prevent him from bursting. His attempt however is in vain, he bursts out laughing clutching his sides. Mrs. Tachikawa tries to stop him but is struggling to hold in her own laugh, she finally breaks out into a fit of giggles.

Just then, Mimi enters with a bewildered look on her face. I don't blame her, what a sight it is. Her parents laughing their heads off while a good friend of hers, namely me, stands there blushing like there's no tomorrow.

"What's happening here?" She asks.

"Nothing!" answers her parents in unison.

I was relieved that they didn't tell Mimi what happened, I was embarrassed enough already.

Mimi, sensing that she wasn't going to get any information from her parents just shrugged and then signalled for me to come inside.

I nodded and made my way into the apartment passing Mr. And Mrs. Tachikawa who are still trying to regain their composure.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm…

I haven't been in Mimi's home before. It was quite warm and inviting, various colours adored the apartment, it kind of made my family's apartment look drab and unimaginative by comparison.

"Hi Mimi." I say while handing her the box of chocolates and the bunch of flowers.

"Thank you Joe, but you didn't have to bring me gifts."

"Oh, it was nothing." I smiled.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww…

Mimi quickly shot a glare at her parents

"Oops! Sorry!" apologised Mrs. Tachikawa, who then gave a very visible knowing wink.

Mimi sighed heavily and hung her head in defeat.

This is interesting, Mimi's actions can mean two things…

A: She does like me more than a friend.

B: She is just plain embarrassed.

I really hope it's the former.

Anyway, I made my way to the couch and sat down next to Mimi while Mr. And Mrs. Tachikawa prepared the dinner. This was my chance to impress Mimi, I had memorise a few lines, not pick-up lines but compliments. Compliments that would surely melt her heart, guaranteed! First, I'll tell her that she has beautiful eyes.

"Do you prefer digital or analog?"

"Yikes!" Where did that come from? That wasn't what I was suppose to say! Mimi was perplexed to say the least, I needed a quick recovery. "Think Kido! Think!" I got it! I'll tell her that I've always admired her from afar.

"Have you notice the lack of good latex clothing nowadays?"

"EEK!" That was even worse than what I said before! Mimi's expression was that of total confusion. Please someone save me!

"Dinner's ready!" called out Mrs. Tachikawa

Talk about being saved by the bell, what a relief! Then without anymore embarrassment on my part we made our way to the dinning area.

Mr. Tachikawa took his seat at the head of the table, Mrs. Tachikawa sat across from him and Mimi took the seat opposite mine. I can definitely say that I got the best seat in the room. I could gaze at Mimi the entire time.

"For starters I made sushi." Mrs. Tachikawa announced.

"OH BOY!" Mr. Tachikawa cheered.

"That's terrific mom, I love sushi!" Mimi said smiling.

"I know you do dear. Do you like sushi Joe?" Mrs. Tachikawa questioned me.

"Like it? I love it Mrs. Tachikawa." I answered with enthusiasm.

That's weird. I heard from many sources that Mrs. Tachikawa's cooking skills were quite eccentric to say the least. And here she is serving sushi, which is raw fish in layman's terms. I thought it would be some weird concoction of unusual ingredients.

"I hope everybody is very hungry, I made plenty." Mrs. Tachikawa said while setting down the tray of food.

I was wrong.

They were right.

Her cooking IS eccentric.

"Here you go Joe. An extra large piece for you." Mrs. Tachikawa said placing a generous portion of "Sushi" on my plate before serving everyone else.

"Thank you Mrs. Tachikawa." I respond politely.

I stared at my plate. Is sushi still sushi if it is cooked? I pondered.

"Would you like rice with that?"

"Sorry?"

"Would you like rice with that?" Mrs. Tachikawa repeated.

"Go ahead Joe. Have some, it's good for growing boys. It helps to build up your muscles." Urged Mr. Tachikawa who then flexed his arm to make a muscle.

This brings a gleeful smile on Mrs. Tachikawa's face who then begins to chant "HERCULES! HERCULES!" while clapping her hands together. Poor Mimi! She didn't know where to look as a slight blush crept on her face.

"Okay I'll have some."

"Coming right up."

Mrs. Tachikawa dished a large helping of rice on my plate. Unfortunately she neglected to COOK the rice. It seemed that she had gotten her recipe mixed up. The sushi should have been raw and the rice cooked. However, this did not stop Mr. Tachikawa from wolfing down the first course, probably used to these types of culinary dishes. He must have an iron-clad stomach.

"Aren't you going to eat Joe?" Mimi asked.

This prompted stares from Mr. And Mrs. Tachikawa. Noticing the fact that there was no way out, I took a deep breath, looked Mimi in the eye, smiled and said…

"Of course I am, you know that you can rely on me."

I shovelled a large helping of sushi and rice into my mouth. After what seemed like an eternity of chewing, I was finally able to swallow. It wasn't that unpleasant but if I keep eating uncooked rice I would grind my molars to oblivion.

"How do you like the sushi Joe?"

"It's perfect Mimi."

"And what do you think of the rice?" Mrs. Tachikawa questioned me.

"Crunchy." I answered. "I'm really enjoying it."

I got a satisfied nod from Mrs. Tachikawa, a smile from Mimi and Mr. Tachikawa… well he was still stuffing his face. It seemed that he was REALLY enjoying his meal.

Nothing could prepare me for what came next. If you thought the first course was a fiasco then the main cause really took the cake, and I mean cake literally. It began with a simple, harmless question from Mrs. Tachikawa.

"Joe, do you like chicken and chocolate cake?"

"Yes, I love them both."

Yes, I do like chicken and chocolate cake, but not when they are COMBINED together.

"You're in luck, I call it Chocolate Chicken Cake Surprise." announced Mrs. Tachikawa.

What a sight it was, it looked like an ordinary cake but with various meaty chicken bones sticking out of it. This had to be a new form of torture.

"Here Joe, have a nice big slice." offered Mrs. Tachikawa.

"Er… thank you." I said, my heart sinking and my stomach churning.

The less I tell you about the main course the better, let's just say, I never want to see chocolate and chicken ever again whether they are together or separate!

A few tortured taste buds later…

"Mimi, could you help me with the dishes?"

"Certainly mom."

The two female Tachikawa members gathered up the dishes and left for the kitchen. Now, if television has taught me ONE thing, it's when your having dinner with your girlfriend's parents and she leaves with her mother to the kitchen, it could only mean…

Quality time with her father…

Thankfully, Mr. Tachikawa was a man of few words. He just sat there staring at me, a small grin lingered on his face, probably from my earlier antics.

"You're a good dancer."

"Er… thanks Mr. Tachikawa."

'Not a bad singing voice either."

"Er… thank you, again."

This was somewhat awkward, silence filled the room as I tried to think up ways to impress him. But, there was a problem, I was completely out of ideas.

Meanwhile, Mimi and her mother were having a slight dilemma of their own in the kitchen.

"OH NO!"

"What is it Mimi?"

"There's no strawberries! What are we going to do?"

"Don't worry dear, we'll just have to improvise."

"Improvise?"

"Yes, quickly hand me that basket and the cream."

"Okay mother. I hope you know what you're doing."

"Trust me."

"O-kay..."

One quick improvisation later…

Mrs. Tachikawa along with Mimi then entered the room carrying a large tray with the desserts on it.

"Here you go, strawberries and cream for everybody." Proclaimed Mrs. Tachikawa as she served the desserts.

I was glad, after the last two exotic dishes finally something ordinary.

Or so I thought.

The cream was normal, it was fresh but the strawberries, they seemed… different. They looked more round in shape and had a much thicker skin than usual.

"Is something wrong Joe?" asked Mimi.

"Oh, er… no, it's just, these strawberries, they look different."

Nervous laughter emitted from Mrs. Tachikawa and Mimi.

"They're imported strawberries, from… Canada." answered Mrs. Tachikawa.

Somehow, I didn't believe her. I quickly glanced around the table, Mr. Tachikawa was almost finish eating his dessert, Mrs. Tachikawa had a nervous grin on her face and Mimi, well she just smiled and shrugged at me.

"He who dares, wins!" I thought to myself so I decided to eat the dessert anyway.

One large spoonful of strawberries and cream later…

The cream tasted normal but the strawberries… they tasted completely different from any strawberries I've ever eaten. Then it dawned on me, they weren't strawberries but mini tomatoes. Ugh!

"Are you okay Joe?"

"I'm fine Mimi."

I looked at her face, full of concern and then at my dessert.

"You don't have to eat it if you don't want to Joe."

"I do want to eat it Mimi, I'm enjoying it. Really I am."

I made a decision. I was going to finish this dessert even if it lands me in hospital with food poisoning.

Tick Tock… Tick Tock… Tick Tock…

A few minutes later I had accomplished my task, it wasn't too unpleasant just kind of weird. Mimi's parents then cleared the table, this left me and Mimi alone together. We moved to the living room and talked for what seemed to be an hour. However like all good things, they must end. It was nine 'o clock and I had to leave, Jim would be waiting outside for me. I sighed and reluctantly said my goodbyes.

"Thanks for the wonderful meal Mrs. Tachikawa."

"It was a pleasure Joe, I love trying out new recipes."

Great! Now I'm a genni pig, but somehow I felt it was worth it.

"Good night Joe."

"Good night Mr. Tachikawa."

"May I walk Joe to the door dad?"

"Of course you may Mimi."

OH BOY! This could be it. This could be my chance to get my first kiss. I almost jumped up into the air and cheered but managed to keep my composure.

"Well… er… goodnight Joe. I'll… see you tomorrow." Mimi told me, her voice slightly nervous, but why?

Then I noticed, looking over her shoulder I saw Mr. And Mrs. Tachikawa watching us with grins plastered on their faces. I supposed this made Mimi feel uncomfortable, I know it made me uncomfortable. She extended her hand towards me. Sigh! It's seems all I would be getting tonight was a handshake goodbye.

"Goodnight Mimi. See you tomorrow." I said shaking her hand.

I got a smile and nod from her. Better than nothing I suppose.

The door closed, I turned around and began to walk down the stairs when I remembered about the card. I forgot to give Mimi the card. "Stupid Joe, stupid!" I mentally scolded myself. Noticing that the door was close, I slid the card under the door and made my way out of the building.

Minutes later…

I had finally made it to Jim's car when I heard someone call out my name.

"Joe!"

The voice was faint but it was defiantly female. Knowing that I had nothing to lose I turned around only to see…

"MIMI!"

There she stood, like a goddess. Her face however was full of emotion, between happiness and sadness, confusion I think. But why? Then I noticed it.

The card!

She clutched it tightly. Oh no! Is it because of what I wrote in it? Have I ruined our friendship with those words? She walked towards me, I felt paralysed, my legs turned to jelly. I couldn't move!

"What is this?" She asked as she rammed the card into my face.

"Er… er… a card."

"Read it!"

"Huh?"

"You heard me. Read it!"

My heart rate increases as I open the card and begin to read it aloud…

ROSES ARE RED…

VIOLETS ARE BLUE…

THREE SIMPLE WORDS…

I LOVE YOU!

After I said the three final words I looked up from the card and stared straight into Mimi's eyes.

"Joe… " She manages to choke out before continuing, "…do you really mean it?"

Her eyes began to fill with tears, tears of hope, which then became tears of joy when I opened my mouth and said…

"With all my heart."

With a small smile to her face she approaches me, places her arms around my neck and gives me my first kiss. A kiss filled with so much passion and love that it stops time for me. It melts my heart, erasing all of my worries.

"I love you too." She whispers in my ear.

We stood there holding each other for what seemed to be an eternity. Finally we broke our embrace, said goodnight and went our separate ways.

Approaching the car, I noticed Jim seated there staring in my direction with his mouth hanging open.

"Um… er… hi." I muttered as I got into the car. "What's up?"

"I was going to ask how your evening went but…" Jim trailed off.

"Well…" I began, trying to change the subject but starting to blush again. "How was your evening?"

"The events of your evening seems to have overshadowed mine."

"What's that?" I asked pointing to a metal object he held in his hand.

"This? It's… nothing." He said then tossed it at the back of the car.

CLANG!

What was that sound? It sounded like metal being knocked together. I turned only to see five similar metal objects. I grabbed one and studied it. It was a metal trophy with writing on it. The inscription reads…

ODAIBA DRAG RACING CHAMPIONSHIP 1st PLACE

This shocks me, could those rumours be true? I quickly reached for another trophy to confirm this it too reads…

ODAIBA STUNT DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP 1st PLACE

I turn to Jim who is grinning quite nervously.

"Jim is this… oh, nevermind, I'm in too much of a good mood to worry right now. Let's go home."

"Yes sir!" Jim says quite relieved.

With that Jim starts the car and we leave the area where Mimi and I shared our first kiss.

"Oh Jim."

"Yes Joe."

"Could we make one stop before we go home?"

"Sure! Where to?"

"The hospital."

"The hospital? Why?"

"I think I need to get my stomach pumped. I don't think it agrees with Mrs. Tachikawa's cooking."

"Oh Joe." Jim sighs, "Want to listen to some music till we get there?"

"Sure, why not?"

Jim leans over and presses a combination of buttons. The music starts…

"Oh no." I groan as the car begins to fill with another rendition of… *Play*

What is love
Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more

"What is love? By Haddaway. I love this song." announced Jim "Why? Don't you like it?"

Baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
no more

"It's not that, it's… a long story."

"I'm all ears. You can tell me."

"It's kind of embarrassing."

"Even better, do tell."

What is love
Yeah

"Fine." I sighed, "It all started with an invite to a dinner party and…"

I began telling my story to Jim as the car sped off into the night with Haddaway's What is love? Blaring in the background.

THE END!
