The Final Evolution
Or Fumbling towards Ecstasy
No, I do not own Digimon, if you fell the urge to sue all you can get is a box of Frosted Flakes, a empty jug of milk, and a cup of tea…wait no, you can't have my tea! You can't handle my tea!
This will be my first Digimon story that doesn't solely focus on one couple, features Action/Adventure, the digimon ^-^*, won't bash Kari, and isn't based wholly in the real world. It isn't practically good or original, but it's…odd? Look, I'm a physiological write, I like to know what goes on in the mind and I find that in my hands the mind can be a dark and twisted place. So you know…maybe those psychology classes were a bad idea.
A few things: 1) I was once an avid Kari, Miyako, and Sora basher. I'm almost positive I actually like Miya, I can tolerate Sora, and Kari can be cool…as long as she stays far away from Daisuke.
2) I'll admit I abuse my favorite people horribly, so if you're a big Daisuke, Takeru, Ken, or Iori fan, let me direct you to the door.
3) Canon is scary. End of story.
4) I only read Het when I'm desperate. Very, very, VERY desperate. No offense if you like it, but I don't.
5) I deal with grown up things in a less then totally mature way, but that doesn't mean you can ignore the warnings and read anyway, because it may be dark and creepy at parts. I think that's it.
Pairings: I'm open to suggestions, though I am leaning towards Taiato, Jyoushiro, Takedai, Kenori, Somi, and Hiyako. But I can also see Kensuke and Takori If that bothers you, once again, there's the way out.
Timeline: Last Episode, except things go wrong, so ignore the Epilogue. I do.
Prologue
Iori watched as the butterflies that had once been the body of his father's best friend flew away to heal the damage done to the digital world, a sad expression on his face. It was necessary, but still…he wished…
He could have asked about his father. And that this could have ended a lot differently.
The digimon at his feet blinked then begin sobbing loudly. Iori broke out of his thoughts and bent down to pick up the hatchling, then looked around at the bleak area around them.
The children who had once carried the dark spores lie on the icy, unforgiving ground, nothing left in them, leaving behind empty shells that didn't do their sacrifice justice. These children had just given everything they had inside of them; every ounce of love, hope, goodness, and most of all life, to create a force absolutely nothing could possibly stop.
The six digidestined stood, the only sound that of a small crying digimon who had just found his partner only to lose him and a part of himself as well. None of them had even imagined for a moment that it might end this way.
Maybe they should have seen it, they shouldn't have been so optimistic in the end, and should have been prepared, but they hadn't been and it was far too late to correct any of that now.
Hikari closed her eyes against the tears that threatened to escape. "Oh my god."
Miyako reached over and took her hand, squeezing slightly. "It's okay."
Kari's eyes snapped open and she turned to scream that it wasn't okay, that it could never be okay, because a bunch of kids had died, were dead and couldn't be reformatted and reborn, were gone, because they weren't strong enough. But Miyako's eyes were glazed with tears, but still calm and forgiving, and Kari couldn't be angry and she was so tired. She almost fell then and there, but Miyako and Takeru, who was on her other side, were there.
Ken opened his eyes after a moment and looked around for his only real friend other then Wormmon. Daisuke had walked away, far enough away that it took Ken a good five minutes to climb up the hill after him. He found Daisuke staring down into a ravine and more importantly the people at the bottom on their way up.
Ken could tell by the looks on their faces that they knew, he wasn't sure how and he found he didn't really care, but they knew.
"Dai."
"We messed up." Daisuke said without turning to look at him. "We messed up so bad, I fucked up really bad."
"I think we all did." Ken said carefully. "Not just you. We should have been more careful, smarter about this. But it wasn't you."
"But I am the leader." Daisuke said. "I'm supposed to see things like this and figure out safer ways and I didn't! I failed."
"Daisuke don't-"
"Don't what? Take the blame? I have to." Daisuke sighed. It could be no one's fault but his own. He wasn't sure where everything had gone so wrong, but somewhere along the way it had fallen apart and it was his fault. No one else could take the blame. "Can you get the others?"
Ken hesitated then nodded and turned to gather up the younger kids, giving Daisuke a little bit more time to himself. He needed it. Daisuke sighed and glanced down at Chibimon, who was staring up at him with the widest red eyes; he put Kari to shame.
"Are you okay Dais?"
"I'm fine." Daisuke forced a tiny smile.
A few minutes later the digidestined and their digimon, past and present, were standing on ridge in an almost total silence, no one knowing quite what to say about it.
Mimi brushed a strand of curly brown hair from her face and looked at the ground. A breeze ruffled her hair, throwing the hair back into her face and scattering a few stray tears away. Sora stood next to her, arms wrapped around herself in an effort to keep warm.
"How could something like this happen?" She wondered out loud, then winced at the looks on the younger kids faces and the writing looks Tai and Matt fixed on her.
Daisuke was the one who responded. "We couldn't do it. The digimon de-digivolved, the darkness was spreading fast and we didn't have anything, no fire-power, and no idea what the hell we should do and then…I don't know what.
"They fought in our place." Kari said, voice strangely flat. "They gave everything that had to save the digital world and our homes and it created the bright light and…it was over. They were gone, it was gone, the darkness had been banished, it was all over." She looked down for a moment and kicked the dust underneath her feet. "It was just over."
Tai touched her should then looked around at the older kids for ideas. No one had any to offer. They didn't want to stay but they couldn't just leave, could they.
"Digidestined." A man was walking towards him, someone none of them recognized. He was tall with green hair and smoky gray eyes.
Tai pulled Kari back towards him. "Who are you?"
"You can call me Sirius." He replied, watching them all intently. "I have come to tell you it's time for you to leave here, for good I believe."
Matt glanced back down. "But what about the kids."
"No one will remember about your adventures in the digital world. Not your parents, their parents, the children who say you on the computer, or even the digidestined in other parts of your own world." Sirius said calmly. "It will be as if none of the attacks happened, Ken never ran away from home, those children never existed and no one accidentally stumbled across this place. But for it to work all gates must be sealed."
"If you seal the gates we…" Izzy trailed off and looked at Tentomon who was hovering close to his ear.
"Yes," Sirius agreed.
Joe frowned. "What's the catch?"
"Isn't not being able to return catch enough?" The man asked, arching an eyebrow.
"Yes." Iori said softly.
"But you accept?"
Tai looked around them, seeing grim and set faces, then nodded. "We accept."
Sirius nodded and made a gesture towards the ridge. "The final gate is right off the ridge. Think of it as…the last rush. You have one minute."
They all turned in almost unison and looked over the edge of the ridge and say a swirling black hole in the sky, slowly closing in on itself.
"No way!" Mimi shrieked, taking a step back.
"But Mimi." Her digimon said. "You have to! Your parents would miss you if you didn't."
"A minute." Izzy repeated then smiled at his digimon. "Then I guess it's time to say good bye."
"I suppose." Tentomon said, a hint of sadness obvious.
"Have feeling you'll be seeing us again?" Kari asked, voice thick. Gatomon looked up into her partners pleading eyes and paused then nodded.
"Of course kid, like you can ever get rid of me."
"It was nice getting to know you." Armadillomon said, smiling at Iori, who was setting the hatchling down.
"Yes, it was." Iori said quietly. "You'll take of him won't you?"
"Of course we will." Wormmon said from Ken's shoulder. Ken smiled at Iori then looked at Wormmon.
"You'll be okay right?"
Wormmon managed a laugh. "Will you continue to be you?" Ken nodded. "Then I'll be fine."
"Now who's going to keep you from drowning in schoolwork?" Gonamon sighed heavily.
"The one thing I won't miss about you." Joe said. "I'll get work done now."
"You don't mean that do you? I wasn't so bad to have around was I?"
Joe raised an eyebrow. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
Hawkmon looked at Miyako who looked back then burst into loud noisy tears, much to her partner's chagrin and dismay.
"Don't cry Miyako, please, I hate it when you cry."
The girl sniffled. "Sorry."
"I will miss you." Hawkmon said, patting her leg with his feather.
Sora knelt in front of Biyomon then grabbed her into a crushing hug. The bird made gagging sounds but made no real effort to get away. She didn't mind.
Daisuke tilted his head off to the side and looked at Chibimon, the only Digimon not on the rookie level.
"How about turning into Veemon one last time?"
The digimon looked to be concentrating hard then in a familiar burst of light Daisuke was knocked over by a blue digimon.
"Not to interrupt but we have to go." Tai said loudly. He glanced at Agumon who nodded his agreement. "Bye buddy."
Agumon just blinked at him, like that had surprised him. Tai saw a glimmer of something n his bright emerald eyes then shrugged it off.
Matt nodded at Gabumon, but didn't say anything other then that. Gabumon understood, even all of these years later, Matt still wanted to play it cool. Except now he did it a lot better and actually looked like he meant his cool practiced indifference.
"Who first?" Mimi asked.
"I'll go." Daisuke said before Tai could open his mouth to volunteer. No one protested to this, though Tai did look very unhappy with it.
Daisuke stood on the edge and looked at the swirling smoke that made up the gate. If he missed he could become a permanent fixture on the rocks below…that would kind of suck. So he had better not miss. He took a deep breath and stepped off, leaving his friends holding their breaths and wondering if they were about to see another death.
Daisuke felt like he was being pulled inside out and thrown around by an angry Seadramon. All the air left his lungs with a whoosh and the air around him crackled and sparked. It seemed like forever but at the same time a brief moment and then
Seven Years Later
Daisuke Motomiya blinked at the harsh sunlight as he stepped out of his apartment building, a thoughtful expression on his face. His sister had some how got it into her head that she needed to come and visit him and make sure he was eating and all of that other stuff essential to living, since Daisuke didn't seem capable of doing it on his own.
It wasn't that he couldn't, contrary to what Jun had convinced herself of, he was just busy and food…well he ate, what more did she want from him?
She wanted to see him. After what had happened he hadn't been at home or in Japan for more then a month at a time. First he had lived with an aunt in England, which had been okay and his parents hadn't care what he did, then he had stayed with Willis in America, then he had gone to a school in Canada.
He still didn't know what had possessed him to go there. The other ones made sense at least, but the last one…oh well.
He found himself thinking about his old friends as he walked down the busy streets. It had been almost six years since he had seen most of them, though he couldn't escape Ken or Kari, no matter how hard he tried and he had tried pretty damn hard. They didn't want to let him go.
Kari wouldn't let anyone go and he was all Ken really had as far as close friends went, though he knew his best friend still saw Iori frequently. An unlikely friendship since Iori had been the last to trust him, but Daisuke was glad Ken had someone to talk to.
The digidestined just couldn't be around each other after that. It had hurt them so much to see and remember what no one else did that they had just…drifted apart in the end.
Sora and Matt had called it quits for good, Matt was on tour at the moment and Sora was helping her mother at their shop and considering being a teacher, Joe had moved somewhere and Izzy, or Koushiro as he now preferred, was doing the college thing, Kari had joked and said he was teaching. Daisuke had halfway believed her.
Ken was debating on which full college scholarship he should take while Takeru help off for a year and got a job to pay for it. Tai was…well honestly Daisuke wasn't too sure what Tai was doing, but he knew Mimi was in school to be a fashion designer. Miyako was taking a course in journalism and Iori was still in high school. Kari was taking classes in photography and he…
Was trying to keep his sister from finding out he had actually dropped out of school sometime last year. Jun was going to skin him alive for it, since she was more of a mother to him then their real mother was, but his heart hadn't been in it and he just couldn't make himself get up and go anymore. It hadn't been thought out or intentional, but one day he had woken up, thought, rolled back over and hadn't gone to school since.
So here he was, Daisuke world-class dropout, while the rest of his former friends went and did all sorts of things. Maybe he would go back. But not right now, he was much happier sitting around and doing nothing. It was going to be something different when that money his grandmother had left him and Jun ran out, but until then he was pretty much set.
He was standing outside the restaurant where he ad agreed to meet Jun when a faint beeping caught his attention. He frowned as the sound got louder and louder. Then a streak of light came weaving out of the crowd of people and hit him square in the chest, making him go back a few steps.
This was far too familiar for his taste.
He looked down and his heart nearly stopped. New design, different color, but he knew what it was, he wasn't that stupid.
It was a digivice.
Fuck.
So, should I continue, or should I just go and work on my other stuff? And as for what happened between jumping and seven years later, I'm not telling yet, so there.
