The Call of Darkness! A New Adventure Begins

The Chosen were able to successfully defeat the Dark Masters and Apocalymon. Once they returned home, the Chosen Children gradually went to back to their daily lives with the help of their families. Fortunately, they had been able to bring their digimon partners back to Earth with them.

Now, six years later, they were starting to gradually drift apart, as everyday life demanded more of them then ever before.

Yagami Taichi still occasionally played soccer, although he was now the assistant coach of the Junior High team he had formerly played on.

Ishida Yamato had formed a band, the Teenage Wolves, and had recently signed a record contract. Garurumon was all too happy to act as a live stage prop.

Takenouchi Sora was helping her mother run the family flower shop. In her spare time, she still played soccer and tennis, although not as much as she had when she was younger.

The Tachikawa family had moved to Kyoto, where Mimi was thinking of becoming either a teacher or a nurse.

Izumi Koushiro had started a small computer business, and was saving up money for the apartment he and Taichi were planning to move into soon.

Kido Jyou was studying to become a marine biologist, with some help from his brother, Shin, and Gomamon.

Takaishi Takeru, Yagami Hikari, Motomiya Daisuke, Inoue Miyako, and Ichijouji Ken had begun to attend high school the previous fall.

The youngest member of the team, Hida Iori, was in his first year of junior high.

They would soon be required to fight for the two worlds again, although they didn't yet know it. And some of their new enemies would be human.

Two-year-old Kawada Noriko toddled over to the window of her room, gazing out at the darkness covering the city of Tokyo like a heavy black blanket. She felt at home in the night, when she could be alone with the shadows.

In her short life, darkness had always been comforting to her. It welcomed her, while her parents and brother rejected her.

The Kawadas had not wanted another child after their first- born son, Kosaku. A son, they felt, could ensure the future of their family line. A daughter, on the other hand, would contribute nothing.

Noriko neither knew nor understood this. She did know, however, that her desire for affection was pushed aside in favor of her older brother. Her young mind resented this deeply.

But the night seemed to embrace her.

And now, as the little girl heard her brother's arrogant voice in the living room, and as she heard her mother, all too happy to please him, answer, something happened which her young mind could not yet comprehend.

The night seemed to seep in through the slightly open window, surrounding her in an aura of utter Darkness.

Most children her age would be afraid at this point, but not Noriko. She simply stood there as the darkness flowed into her body. To her, this felt so right, as if it was her destiny.

"I am Kawada Noriko," she announced in a voice that sounded much too old for such a small child. "And I am Darkness."

And with that, she was gone.

"Keiko!" Mrs. Murasaki threw up her hands in exasperation. "Please hurry! We're going to be late!"

"But, Mama...I'm so tired."

"There is NO reason for you to be exhausted all the time! That's why we're going to the doctor!"

The woman turned as loud laughter burst out from the living room.

"Mom!" Taheiji called in annoyance. He wasn't laughing. "Would you please lock
Joruri in her room or something? I'm trying to spend time with my friends!"

Mrs. Murasaki sighed. "Oh, Joruri, what now?"

The little girl had stripped down to her underwear, painted her bare skin with her finger-paints, and had wandered into the living room.

"Joruri," her mother said in resignation, "you're getting too old to do things like this. Taheiji, send your friends home. You're going to have to babysit your little sister."

She scooped up Keiko in one arm and her youngest child, Hyobe, in the other, and rushed out the door. She would never see them again.

"Kiyomi!" Mr. Nataga shouted. "I can't believe you failed ANOTHER test!"

"Why should I bother? It's not as if I'm not past everyone else's level! I could be in Junior High this year, but no! You made me stay back with the rest of those idiots!"

"Kiyomi," her mother began nervously. "We've talked about this before-"

"I hate it! Why should I have to put up with them? Why can't I start going to the advanced school in Tamachi? I could at least get a CHALLENGE there!"

"That's ENOUGH!" Her father slammed his fist on the table. "We can't afford it!
You know that!"

"Oh, really? Then how were you and Mom able to afford that trip to Korea last year?!"

"Kiyomi, that was a business trip-"

"I won't go back to that school!"

"Go to your room until you can think of how you're going to apologize to us."

"Fine."

"My God, Hiroshi...What have you DONE?!"

Arishima Kawori pressed her hands to her mouth in complete horror. In front of her, sitting on the ground, was her grandsonâ€"with the bloody remains of her cat.

She fell to her knees, the tears starting. Pochi had been her only companion during the times when her daughter and grandson weren't here. Her husband had died two years ago, and her daughter, Shibata Shirubi, gave her mother the small kitten as a source of comfort.

And now she was gone...sliced apart by her own grandchild.

"How could you? How could you be so CRUEL?!"

"What's going on out here?"

Shirubi, her stomach swollen with child, came out onto the patio. Her eyes widened with similar horror when she saw what Hiroshi had done to her mother's cat.

The shock was so great that she went into labor immediately. She sank to the ground, clutching her stomach and groaning in pain.

On a little-used road in the mountains, another mother-to-be was dying.

Yoshizawa Hachiro and Setsuna had been heading back to Kyoto. There had been several bad storms lately, and they wanted to get back before the roads became impassable.

As they were driving around a particularly sharp curve in the road, they discovered a tree lying directly in the car's path. Hachiro hadn't been able to stop in time, and the car had flipped over, skidding several yards down the road before coming to a stop.

He had died instantly. Setsuna wasn't so lucky. She had fallen onto the dashboard, the broken gearshaft piercing her chest.

She could feel herself dying. As her vision darkened, she rubbed her hand over her stomach and made a wish.

And her wish was granted.

Siagyo Chimari burst into tears as her older brother grabbed the pocky from her hand. "Mama, he took my snack!"

Mrs. Siagyo sighed in frustration. "Kyoji, did you take your sister's snack again?"

"No, Mama."

"Why do you always lie? I can see the crumbs on your hands. Now tell me the truth," his mother demanded.

"I didn't take her pocky!"

"That's it, you're grounded until you can tell the truth. Now go to your room!"
She pointed sternly in the direction of her son's room.

Oniji sat on the hard plastic chair outside the principal's office, swinging his legs.

"I just don't know what to do with him," Mr. Kanegawa said. "He seems to break everything he touches."

Principal Gidayu folded her hands on her desk. "Some children just have this problem. No one knows why. Something's just not connected right in their heads."

"Are you saying our son is crazy?" Mrs. Kanegawa demanded.

"No, not at all. He's simply accident-prone. There's a special program at this school for kids like him."

"But he doesn't need special-ed classes!"

"You're right, he doesn't. He's very bright for a child his age. The problem is with his body, not his mind."

***

One by one, they disappeared. Some of their families actually saw them fade away, while others were simply missing from their beds the next morning.

Some of the Chosen Children saw the accounts of the disappearances on the news, but gave no thought to them.

Until a few days later.
