Chapter 6

I slept the rest of that day. It was a restless sleep.

I had strange visions of death, destruction and decay. Most of it was at my own hands! In the dream I killed so many people. It hardly phased me. Until I saw Ruki lying there, in the middle of the street, amongst the corpses. She shined with a brilliant light. I approached her, happy to see she was alive.

The closer I got to her however, the more her light began to fade. She was bleeding from a wound on her leg and through various places on her head. Her skin looked as pale as the moon that vaguely shown through the blood red clouds. Her eyes were glassy as she looked up at me.

"Jen… why? What have you become?" She asked. She began coughing up hordes of blood.

"R-Ruki?" I lifted her to a sitting position as gently as possible and cradled her head. "P-Please talk to me…"

"What have you dooone…" She asked one last time as her last breath escaped her pale lips.

"Ruki? Noo please come back. Ruki please…"

A voice came from behind me.

"We are the dying, however, you are the dead. So many are dying Jen. So many. There's only so much we can do. I'm afraid some one here is going to have to die. And it won't be me…"

"But what about…"

"No. Jen, there is no hope for her. Ruki is dead. She's as good as anyways. `Tis best you forget about her. Her time has come." The voice said dropping to just above a whisper.

I turned around, tears streaking my blood soaked face. The speaker walked off… his dark midnight cloak licking the blood-soaked pavement. Then the figure was gone, dispersed into the red mist.

I turned back to Ruki. She lied motionless in my arms. Her skin looked as white as death itself. Even in death she was beautiful. I brushed the hair off her face and whipped some of the blood from her mouth.

I leaned over her. I stared at her face for a moment. She looked so peaceful now. Like nothing could hurt her, nothing could corrupt her… but I had.

Such innocence like that of which I had never seen in Ruki was present on her face. There was something warm and inviting about her face. I leaned closer.

I kissed her, not gently but hard. I pulled her close to me. I continued to kiss her for a minute.

I broke away from her. WHAT THE HELL WAS I DOING? I dropped her and stepped away looking at her in horror of what I had done.

"No… what have I become?"

I stared at my hands in horror. A searing pain ripped through my neck as I collapsed to my knees in agony. I began tearing into the back of my neck with clawed fingers. Blood oozed down my neck and onto the ground which shattered with every drop. There was a fire burning in my stomach. I looked around. I saw all my friends. They were all dead. It was all my fault. So many faces… so many…

Juri wasn't among the dead. She was no where to be found. But that puppet she had carried all those years ago lied complacently at my feet. It was smiling.
