Digimon Fan Fiction ❯ Soccer star ❯ Dogfight ( Chapter 10 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

This is kinda late isn't it? -_-; Now, this is going to be a bit of a bitch for me because I've not seen, nor played a soccer/football game in a long while. But I would like to thank Ben Myatt ( http://www.fanfiction.net/u/121323/ ) for helping me out with details of how a Soccer/Football game is played. And as for the coach and team I just used what I could find when I researched.

Chapter Ten - Dogfight

Davis panted roughly as he ran, dodging tree after tree. Every few minutes a small blue energy ball would hit the ground and he'd evade it. Using his foot, Davis kicked the ball upward into the air and head butted it over a bush as he jumped over it and continued. In the distance he could see the goal. He could make, it, he knew he could. Once in the clear the ball went airborne. If flew toward the goal, it was headed for the post, Davis' heartbeat slowed. The ball made contact...........it flew to the left, into the forest. Davis let loose.

“GODDAMNIT! THAT'S THE THIRD FUCKING ONE! What in the hell is going on?!?!”

“You know, stress and bottled feelings are the keys to unfocused game.” Davis immediately recognized the voice.

“Bite me, Tai.”

“It's true and you know it, now come on and fess up. What's bothering you?”

“Sorry, no can do old buddy.” Davis made sure to emphasize old.

“You know, we are sorry about what we did and said.”

Davis sighed and sat down, leaning on a tree, “it's just not that simple.”

Tai sat opposite Davis, “I've got time, explain.”

“Maybe one day I can, but not now. I'm sorry.”

The two sat in silence for a long while.

“Wanna try a little one-on-one?” Tai asked. Davis smirked.

The Next Day, Japan National locker room...

The crowd was deafening when they heard the guitars of the Japan National's Theme Flashback by Asian Kung-Fu Generation. They roared even louder as it hit that main and the team started running out to greet the field. The crowd began to settle once the team was on the field and set-up.

Since it was a home game, the away team warmed up first, but now it was their turn. Davis stretched and soon they began their little run. Davis was starting to get back into a groove that suited him. The game was ready to begin; Davis looked around and soon caught the eye of his sister, Andrew by her side. He waved to them and lined up to his spot.

“Who's that?” The guy next to him asked him from behind, the number on his back showed 18 and Ono, a midfielder.

“My sister and my son.” He replied behind him.

“Your what?”

“I'll explain later, Shinji, just keep your game focused.”

“Right.”

The ball was in the air and the second the whistle blew, Davis was on it. He dodged the first forward and let loose, Ono on his tail. A midfielder came right at him, this one he couldn't avoid. He stepped over the ball; Shinji took over until Masashi, number 10, was in position. Shinji let the ball loose to Masashi.............intercepted. The other team took off Davis tailed the forward, once he was close enough and Masashi was beside the other forward, Davis made his move. Davis hit the ground, his leg slide between the forward's and the ball flew to the left toward the out-of-bounds line. It was only a few feet from it.

Masashi head butted it back in and took over as the game switched yet again. Davis was already back up and running, headed toward Masashi and Shinji. The two were switching the ball back and fourth. Shinji ran ahead as Davis ran up behind Masashi, Masashi passed it back and ran ahead.

As Davis came close, the goalkeeper was nervous. Davis saw it and took his chance, the ball fired. The goalie leapt, no ball, Shinji passed to Masashi. With the ball in the air, Masashi jumped, he shot, SCORE! The crowd roared in approval, it was apparent who the favorite team was. The goalkeeper was still trying to figure out what happened.

(Back to Game!)

The three teammates commended each other. The rest of the team was a bit in shock, they'd never seen that play before. Although, one group of people in the stands had seen that play before, and only one had done it before and even he hadn't expected that one. The game resumed. Meanwhile in the stands, someone else was the topic of discussion, or rather, something.

“Did you teach him that?” Sora asked.

“I forgot that I even knew that play.” Tai replied.

“I actually think that was better than the original.” Matt smirked.

“Yeah,” Tai said, mindlessly, “wait, HEY!” They busted out laughing. Tai pouted. Back in the game, it was just starting.

The opposite team's (US) midfielder, number 15 Josh Wolff, was darting down the field, Daisuke and Masashi deep in pursuit. Davis took point and ran parallel to Wolff. Wolff saw him coming and prepared to shoot, Davis was too fast. He slide in front of Wolff, the ball flew to the right to Masashi, who picked up the slack and took off. Wolff growled and went in pursuit with Davis on his heels. Wolff completely ignored the tear and bloody scratch on his shin, Davis did though, and laughed a bit at the irony.

Masashi was nearly at the Goal, he dodged right, dodged left, he shoots, blocked. Defender, number 16, Carlos Llamosa took the reigns, but not quick enough to see Daisuke slide in and kick the ball, neither did the goalkeeper, SCORE!

By the time half-time hit it was 5 - 5, both Japan and the US were deadlocked for the past ten minutes, Daisuke and Wolff “trading” the ball throughout. Coach Philippe Troussier called the team around him and began on a new strategy to get past the two equally talented Forwards.

Once he finished it was time for the second half, Davis prepared himself. As the team took the line, Davis and Wolff caught eyes, both sneered. The ball dropped and the two shot like bullets toward it. Yet again using his sliding technique, Davis shot the ball underneath Wolff's legs straight to the awaiting Shinji who then passed it to Masashi. Davis was up and at Wolff's ass in the blink of an eye. What came next was completely unexpected. Masashi kicked the ball straight up, when positioned, he shot it backwards?

Wolff saw the ball speeding toward his face and ducked, Davis, using his head, head-butted (no pun) the ball high and fast into the air toward the goal and with his focus on the ball, goalkeeper, number 19 Tony Meola, didn't even notice Shinji come up, when the ball got closer, he finally noticed Shinji. All but too late though, with the ball in range, Shinji jumped up and took the shot. SCORE!

The next round started as the stalemate continued between Davis and Wolff. The longer the game went on, the harder the two fought. The two would variably pass to other players in an attempt to get past the other team's forwards, but still ended up losing the ball. With Ten minutes left in the game, with it at 6 - 7, Japan lead, Wolff finally evened the score.

Four minutes left, the next goal wins, both teams were pushing themselves to the limit, finally Masashi captured the ball Shinji and Daisuke were the only two open, with Wolff closing in on Shinji, Masashi passed to Davis, only to have it intercepted by USA Midfielder, Landon Donovan. Davis cursed and went in pursuit.

With Davis almost directly to his right, Donovan felt the pressure. Davis waited and watched, as Donovan dribbled the ball with his feet down the field. Donovan pulled his leg up and took the shot, Davis saw the opening. In what seemed like slow-motion, Davis dropped, leg extended, stopping the ball, Donovan's foot missing its target. Davis had the ball once again and blasted down the field.

Davis had but a minute and a half, he dodged as he ran. From the stands it looked as though he were predicting their moves. Thirty seconds, faster he ran the long field, twenty-five, another dodge, twenty-three, passed, twenty, passed back. It was now or never and he knew it, but the goal was too far. He leg went up, down, it made contact and the ball flew.

It was in almost stop-motion to Davis as watched the ball fly. He see the goalkeeper jump for it, he'd get it, Davis knew it was over.................... The goalkeeper's fingers were on the ball, until it flew past, SCORE! Davis turned, the crowd was silent. A small smile crept at the edges of Davis' mouth, the crowd began to roar and cheer as Shinji, Masashi, and the rest of the team ran up to Davis, as patting him on the back, congratulating him, or something or that sort.
