Dark clouds threatened the citizens of Odaiba as they bustled past. It
was a dreary winter morning, and pedestrians, bundled tightly in warm
clothes, hurried to their destinations, hoping to escape the rain
before it hit. As the clock struck 8:34, it began to rain. It fell in
small bunches, just barely getting one's hair wet, or someone's
newspaper stained with wetness. It made some retreat into cafe's for
coffee, while others, more prepared people, simply pulled open
umbrellas and shielded themselves from the droplets. As the water from
the sky continued to fall, harder now, a middle aged doctor stared out
the window of his office. The rain splashed into large puddles now,
and streamed in a constant 'pitterpitter splatsplatsplat
pitterpitter'. It reminded Kido Jyou of his failure.
Sure, he was fairly successful, if you considered a lower 1st class 29
year old doctor with a 2 bedroom 2 bath flat in the nicer part of
Odaiba successful. Most do, of course. I mean, consider that
"successful". But, success, like many other things, has many other
meanings, and covers a wide radius. He was not entirely successful. He
was unsuccessful in things like, having many friends. Unsuccessful in
fame. Unsuccessful in popularity with his coworkers. He was seen as a
loner. He was often criticized for his constant depressed mood. But
that was because of his next failure.
He had failed in winning a woman. He had no romantic interest, no
girlfriend, no wife. No love. This, according to Jyou, was the worst
failure of all. He wasn't interested in curt, mean and judgemental
women like those at his office. Those loud, flashy and gharrish women
that were found in clubs held no interest for him either.
All he remembered being attracted to was one. One woman. One girl.
Tachikawa Mimi. No one would have guessed it either. She wasn't his
'type' as it were. She was a boppy, hyper, girly girl. Plus, she lived
cross-seas. In America. He remembered her well. Last time he saw her,
at a didgidestined reunion, she was hosting a cooking show and had a
child. Pangs had stabbed at his heart that day. Whenever he thought of
it, for that matter, they returned.
"Doctor Kido?"
"Yes, Sarai."
"Someone's here to see you. They claim to be an old friend."
"Did you catch their name?"
"No sir."
"Well, I'd like to know who they are, Sarai, go and find out, ne?"
"Yessir."
The door shut, and "Dr. Kido" turned back to the paperwork he had been
filling out previously. Someone named... Takaishi Hikari. A smile
played across his lips for a moment, then dismissed the thought.
Couldn't be. He sighed and went back to filling out a subscription for
her illness, that had been diagnosed as 'morning sickness'. The door
opened again.
"He says his name is Yagami Taichi. Should I send him in?"
"Tai?! Of course!"
Taichi was already there, and Sarai looked a little flustered as he
brushed past her rudely and flopped into a chair, attempting to look
serious. "Doctor. I'm here for a serious matter. I'm... I'm attracted
to flowers." Sarai rolled her eyes and exited. AS the door -click-ed
shut, Jyou and Taichi burst into laughter. "Long time no see,
Yagami... what are you up to now?" Taichi grinned. "I thought I told
you. I have a romantic interest in greenery." Jyou smiled. "I
understand. I went through that phaze in the Digital World while back.
Palmon seemed strangely alluring that week." They shared more laughs,
and Taichi explained that the digidestined were having another
reunion, for a special reason, though.
This made Jyou's ears perk up. "What occaision?" Taichi cleared his
throat and diverted his gaze. "Mimi's husband just left her for
another woman, he took the kid too, and she needs some moral support.
She informed Sora, who decided who better than the digidestined to
cheer one up, ne?" He chuckled a bit and then glanced back at Jyou,
who looked morbid.
Taichi sighed. Whenever he mentioned Mimi, Jyou went into this
"I'm-so-darn-depressed-just-leave-me-be-and-let-me-mourn-for-mimi- alon
e." thing. "Jeez, Kido-san! It's not like she's gotten remarried or
anything! If anything, you should be ecstatic, for God's sake!
Kami-sama! She's available, Jyou!" The doctor sighed. "I know. I know.
Thanks for telling me, Taichi. I'll make sure to keep that date open."
Taichi nodded, and left his friend to ponder.
As the rain poured, Kido Jyou looked down at his feet. The loafers
were barely enough to keep his feet from freezing off, but they
worked. He stared into the depth of his coffee, black and steaming.
Sipping it gently, his gaze traveled outside of the cafe and onto the
grey streets of Japan.
"Hey! You son of a-" The young woman picked up and pebble and hurled
it at the retreating taxi. He hadn't taken her where she needed to
go... the medical offices. Instead, he'd gladly taken his payment
early and kicked her out on a main street. The pebble made contact
firmly with his back bumper, leaving a dent that would be remind him
of his foul deed. The woman huffed and looked around. It'd been so
long since Tachikawa Mimi had laid eyes on the streets of Japan.
Passerbyers looked at her strangely, her large cowboy hat, pink, of
course, making her stick out a bit. Now then... where the heck was
she?
No. It wasn't her! It couldn't be! But there, clear as day... well,
not that clear, considering the foggy weather, but still, there she
was-- Tachikawa Mimi! Jyou pushed his glasses up his nose, in case he
was seeing things, but, behold, there she was. Who else would dare
wear a big pink cowboy hat in Odaiba? Jyou gulped down more coffee,
demanding of his mind that he was delusional. But, no, she was still
there, in fact, it looked like she was heading towards the cafe. Oh
Kami-sama. She saw him.
"Jyou!!!" She squealed, at the man inside the coffee shop, staring in
shock at her. He was unmistakable, blue hair, glasses... and he
noticed her of course. Mimi burst into the cafe, laughing with joy,
after all, look who it was! She dropped her bags by his feet and
engulfed him into a damp hug. He returned it gratefully, his face
lighting up, and he embraced her as a long-missed friend. Some of the
servers were surprised, such a pretty woman- with Kido Jyou of all
people. Who would've guessed?
"How are you?" She asked him eagerly, as she accepted the double tall
latte with extra foam and caramel. The familiar tall man shrugged with
boyish meekness. "I'm doing all right... but..." His dark eyes met
hers across the table. "... I was worried about you. I heard the sad
news." Her smile flickered for a moment. So he knew. "Oh. No, it's all
fine now..." Her coffee suddenly became very interesting, for she
looked down into it, away from his concerned eyes. "... He got custody
of Miroku, and the house... and the car..." Her voice grew distant and
her brown eyes began to well up. "He got everything, and kicked me
out, Jyou! I have nowhere to go!" She began to sob, and Jyou inhaled
deeply, fighting back tears for his childhood love. "No, Mimi! You'll
stay with me--" Her eyes widened and flew up to meet his. "--or, or...
if you have a problem with that... maybe the Ishida's would take you
in... I'm Sora would love for you to stay with her and Yamato... and
their 2 children."
He looked away from her eyes, and continued listing possibilities. "Or
the Ichijoujis! You remember how Miyako adored you, I'm sure she'd
like you there... you could help out with the kids. The Takaishi's...
the Yagami's... the Motimoy--" Mimi interuppted him by placing her
hand on top of his, gently. "Jyou." She whispered. Swallowing, nervous
ebony eyes moved to meet chocolate brown orbs. "Mimi." She smiled.
"I'd love to stay with you."

Success. Was that what he finally had? A wife. Two years later, after
God knows how many years of failure, came success. Tachikawa Mimi was
no longer. Only Kido Mimi was present. And, she would remain. Ah,
sweet success in life. Few experience it. Kido Jyou was one, one of
few. Success.
