Digimon: The Bond
Disclaimer: Digimon isn't mine, it's copyright of Toei, blah blah, on with the story!
The scream rang out loud in the land of the four holy beasts. It was a scream of horror mixed with fear, a cry that reached out to all that could hear.
But to the people close to the source, it was obvious where it came from. It was from the girl called Juri, whose best friend had just perished at the hands of a demon.
Takato just stared ahead in dumb terror at what had been created, no, what he had created. A monster that looked like it had emerged straight from the pits of hell. He called to the monster, but it paid no heed to his words. It was a truly evil creature, formed from the anger that had rocked Takato less than five minutes before.
Looking on from the side, Lee, Ruki, Hirokazu, and Kenta were as scared as Takato. But they did not know, could not possibly fathom the emotions that Takato was feeling. They didn't share the bond with the monster that had been Takato's best friend and loyal partner up till now. Le was the first to break out of the shocked silence, and stared down at the device in his hands, his green D-arc, which was identifying the creature as Megidramon, a virus-type mega level Digimon. He considered shouting this to Takato, but thought better of it.
Takato tried to run through his mind what had happened to his best friend to make it this way. He remembered the beginning. He was an avid fan of the Digimon card game, and his drawings plus a blue card had created Guilmon, his soon-to-be-best friend. He and Guilmon had done everything together, and had formed a special bond, which surpassed anything that could be thrown at them. This bond had faltered when a mean Digimon called Impmon had framed Guilmon for some attacks, but Takato's trust in his Digimon had pulled through, strengthening their bond, and allowing Guilmon to evolve into a new form, Growmon. Later, when the area of West Shinjuku was threatened by a program threatening to destroy all Digimon forever, an evil Digimon had emerged to destroy the humans for doing this. Again, against all odds, the bond between the partners had come through for them, bringing forth the power for Growmon to evolve into MegaloGrowmon. It was this power that now, in the digital world, the source of Digimon everywhere, Takato had most faith in. However, he failed to rely on the fact that anger was felt in the bond as well. When Beelzebumon had destroyed Juri's partner Leomon, Takato had felt a surge of hatred through him, which flowed into MegaloGrowmon, and had turned him dark. But Takato had not noticed this. Blinded by his anger, he had screamed at MegaloGrowmon to evolve so that he could destroy Beelzebumon. However, this had caused a dark evolution, which led to the monster that the group were seeing now. Takato's hatred was personified in it, and there was no doubt that it was evil. Takato was almost crying now. How could I have done this? He was my best friend, and now, because of me, he's become this…this monster and I can't reach him. Our bond is shattered. And it's all my fault.
It's not your fault, Takato. Takato's tear-struck face snapped up as he heard Guilmon's voice. Everyone makes mistakes…just this one was a little bigger than usual. You can't beat yourself up for it.
Guilmon, there's still a part of you inside that…thing? Takato thought furiously, hoping this was true.
Of course there is, Takato. Our friendship is unbreakable, haven't you realized that by now? One little mess-up can't destroy that… But you've forgotten that, haven't you? Takato, I'll always be here for you. But only when you understand that will I be free of this curse your anger has caused.
Takato stared at the remains of his broken D-arc on the ground. It had cracked and fallen into pieces when Megidramon had appeared. But how can I understand that? All I've caused you so far is pain.
Pain? Takato, the time I've spent with you has been the happiest time in my life!
Takato couldn't help a little inner laugh. Guilmon, the time you've spent with me has been the only time in your life!
Exactly! And who started that life? You did. It's because of you that I'm here, Takato. Do you want to end our friendship so soon? Think of all the times we've spent together! Do those mean nothing to you? Guilmon asked.
Of course they don't! Our time together's been the happiest of my life, and I have a longer one to speak of! You're right, Guilmon. Our friendship can surpass anything. We just have to believe. Takato's face was covered in tears now, but he didn't care.
That's the way, Takato. You finally understand. Guilmon told him silently.
Takato blinked back tears, as his partner materialized in front of him, taking the place of the dark monster that had been rampaging and destroying everything.
Guilmon… Takato didn't need to talk, as his bond with Guilmon was at its strongest at that very moment.
Takato! Your faith restored me. Now, let's face this evil together! As a team, I know we can fight Beelzebumon. Guilmon told him confidently.
But what about… Takato stared down at the wreckage of his D-arc.
You don't need that, Takato. All we need is ourselves. Guilmon smiled.
Takato nodded, returning the heartfelt smile, and the two reached out and touched each other, and as they did, the bond reacted.
The two were surrounded by a bright light, then as it cleared, the personification of the two's friendship was there. They had become one and the same, albeit temporarily. But that last part didn't worry them. As they looked down, Takato's D-arc reformed itself and hovered in the air, glowing with a blue light.
Takato…we're part of each other now. Guilmon said in their shared mind.
Takato replied, When were we ever not? Thanks to you, I know our friendship goes past pricelessness, past sentimental value, past everything. It means more to me than anything else.
I know, Takato…I know.
