Chapter One: Asking Her Out

* * *

It was Friday afternoon. Ken walked at a fair pace home from school, one hand in his pocket, the other carrying some books, and his head deep in thought. Recently, he had just come in terms with his feelings for a certain violet-haired girl. It took him a while but he was ready to admit it to himself. He knew that the `feelings' for her was real when his thoughts would drift to her during class for no apparent reason at all. That didn't usually happen to him, he would always be the one that was always listening in class but these days, sometimes he just would think of her.

Ever since the dark spore inside of him had been deactivated, he had tried harder in class to keep up. He still had the reputation as `The Rocket' during soccer matches because he found that he was naturally fast, though not as fast as he was when there was that dark spore. So all in all, everything was going well until just a while ago, hormones suddenly started to kick in at full force and he began to look at a certain lavender-haired friend differently. He began to notice the small things about her, like how beautiful her hair looked in the sun and how perfectly it moved when there was a wind about. He also then noticed the pure beauty of her face, then finding himself staring at her longer than he would have liked.

One afternoon while they were going out for ice cream. He even risked it when the whole gang was around, including Davis, being the perceptive one he was for anything gossipy. "What are you staring at?" He had asked that afternoon, following Ken's gaze towards…well, whatever he was looking at. Ken looked away before Davis could find the object of his attention. He could feel a blush pulling up to his cheeks.

"What? Oh, I'm not staring at anyone, anything," Ken quickly rephrased his sentence, mentally slapping himself in the process.

"No, you said anyone, you were staring at someone?" Davis eyes lit up in interest. Ken turned even redder and thanked God that no one else was sitting close to them (even though he did wished Yolei would sit a little bit closer so he could get a closer glimpse of her, she was all the way across the table). He looked down at his vanilla ice cream with sprinkles (which was beginning to melt, probably due to all the heat that was radiating from his face).

`No Ken,' he thought to himself, `don't think about her right now, think about how to get yourself out of this mess.' "I was staring at…" he tried to think of a good thing to look at, "the street." It was stupid but the best thing he could come up with in four seconds. He was very well aware that he wasn't even staring in the direction of the street, he just hope Davis wasn't.

"You don't want to tell me, do you? Just say it," Davis said, making a mock pained face and went back to eating his double ice cream sundae while eyeing at Ken's vanilla. Ken thanked the gods for Davis' obsession with food, obsessive enough to temporarily forget about what had just happened.

By the time he stopped recalling, Ken had already reached his apartment complex. Getting out his keys, he unlocked the door to the apartment. He removed his shoes and placed them neatly against the wall. "Momma, I'm home," he said in a voice slightly louder than his usual tone.

"Hi Ken," Mrs. Ichijouji said from the kitchen, "How was school?"

"Fine, Momma," he said before continuing onto his room.

"Hi Ken," Wormmon said when he opened the door to his room. The digimon crawled over and looked at him with it's large, yet kind, eyes as he set down his backpack.

"Hello Wormmon." That was all he could get out before Mrs. Ichijouji called him out to help her prepare the evening meal. Picking up his digimon, he walked out his bedroom door. These days, he was closer to both his parents and now, they would always call on him to help them with their daily routine. He enjoyed helping them out, however silly that sounds.

After dinner that night, which consisted of rice with fish, chicken, and seafood soup, Ken asked to be excused from the table. Wormmon stayed at the table to finish his dinner. Like any other digimon, Wormmon had a very big appetite, much to Mrs. Ichijouji's delight. Leaving a small crack in the door, Ken sat down to finish up the rest of his homework. He liked to finish his homework before starting on the weekends, that way he didn't have to worry about homework during the days of no school.

"Ken?" Wormmon peeped up, closing the door behind him as he crawled in.

"Yes Wormmon?" Ken said, turning away from his homework to look at the digimon.

"Did you tell her yet?" Ken shook his head. Wormmon knew Ken cared about Yolei deeply and he just wanted his human companion to be happy with someone. After all that had happened to him, Ken deserved some real happiness other than friendship.

"No."

"But how come?" His partner sighed, yes, why didn't he?

"Because I'm not sure she feels the same way."

"Why don't you ask and find out?"

"Because I can't. Besides that would be a risk to our friendship."

"It wouldn't be because she would care for you in the same way." The digimon said, not understanding why Yolie wouldn't say yes to Ken's invitation to be her, …um… what do you call that when a guy and a girl are something more than friends? Oh yes, a couple. He couldn't understand how someone can not like Ken.

"It's not that simple Wormmon," Ken answered. Wormmon stopped talking and went out of the room while thinking to himself how silly human beings are.

"Hey Ken!" Davis called from the park the next afternoon. He waved from the bench where almost the whole gang was sitting. Everyone turned to look at him, with welcoming smiles on their faces.

"Hello everyone," Ken said in his usual, even tone. He gave a small smile and scanned all their faces before realizing that one person was missing. "Where's Yolei?" Today, he was going to do it. He promised himself he would.

"She hasn't gotten here yet," Kari answered, moving over with the other digidestineds to make room for Ken on the bench.

"Oh look, there she is," Cody said and waved to a purple-haired figure, running towards them. Ken looked at her, mesmerized by her and the way she always gave out that aura of happiness. She was near them when she began to stumble. Ken stood up on impulse and ran at rocket speed towards her. He could make out the surprised look on her face as she lost her balance. Then, he finally reached her and was close enough to grad her waist right before she hit the ground. She fell against his chest and they both fell to their knees. Ken could feel himself blushing as he realized how close they actually were to each other but his arms wouldn't respond at his command to release her of his grip. His heart was pounding. It may be brief but he was going to enjoy it while it lasted. Yolei looked up at him, her brown eyes wide with surprised.

Yolei was caught up at the store and had run out of there when remembering that she had agreed to meet her friends at the park. She had sped to the park with Hawkmon in her bag so she wouldn't have to worry about him not being able to keep up. She found them sitting on a bench and had waved to them. Yolei must not have looked where she was going because the next thing she knew, vertigo seemed to be dominating as she tripped on a rock and the ground sped up towards her. But, she never hit the ground. Strangely, she felt a pair of arms wrapped themselves tightly around her waist. She looked up and was surprised to look into a pair of purple and blue eyes. Wait a minute, those eyes only belonged to one person. This could only happen in her dreams but she knew she wasn't dreaming; he felt too real and too warm. Yolei's body seemed to go limp but she made no effort to get up, she could look into those beautiful blue purple eyes forever. She just wanted to rest her head against his shoulder and have him hold her. But, since when was that going to happen? She could still enjoy this while it lasted. They both didn't know what a sight they made, kneeling there and almost hugging each other while looking into each other's eyes as if they were something more than just good friends.

"Uh, Ken, you can let go now, she's fine." Davis said from behind them, trying hard not to laugh but managed to let out a few sniggers out. Everyone else was also refrained from laughing. The trance Ken found himself in faded away. Why did he allow himself to hold her as long as he did? Davis was going to have a field day teasing him. His arms loosed their grip on her waist and he got up onto his feet, helping Yolei to her feet in the process.

"Are you alright?" He asked, after managing to find his voice. Yolei could just nod but managed to croak out a feeble and barely audible "Yes." He let go of her hands and dropped his own to his side, already missing the touch of her skin. Great, he was letting his thoughts go astray on a certain topic that he would have been better off not thinking about at a moment like this. Not that thinking about Yolie was bad, of course not. Thinking about her was the second best thing to actually seeing her. Actually, third, the first best thing was talking to her.

After he had let go of her hands, Yolie clasped her hands to her side and gripped the fabric of her sweater coat. The feel of the fabric didn't replace the feel of his hand though. She then reminded herself to later make Davis sorry for interrupting her special moment with Ken. On top of that, she cursed at her own clumsiness.

"Ok, so, can we play now?" Davis spoke up again, rudely interrupting Yolie's (and Ken's) train of thought. The group had been silent, eyes focused on the two people standing in front of each other. All, but Davis, realized the certain…something that was flying between those two. Kari, though, understood it better than the rest of them did.

"Play what?" Ken asked.

"Duh, soccer," Davis said, surprised that his friend had forgotten so quickly, they had only talked about it a mere five minutes ago. Ken mentally slapped himself, of course, soccer; they were playing soccer.

"Yolei," Hawkmon's voice spoke up. Yolei looked down at her bird digimon whose head popped out of the bag. "Are you all right?"

"Of course," she answered, smiling her usual big smile.

"Are you sure," Cody said. Yolei nodded, why would he ask that?

"You're looking a bit flushed," Hawkmon said. "Maybe you should sit down in the shade." Yolei put her hands to her cheeks. Oh dear. She did suddenly feel very warm. `Great, I probably looked like a cherry to everyone else.'

"It's probably just the heat," Kari said, stepping up to protect her friend, who had endured enough embarrassment for the day. Kari took Yolei's hand and led her to the bench. Yolei gave her a grateful look.

"What heat?" Davis asked, clearly seeing the color in both Yolei and Ken's cheeks. When seeing Yolei and Kari giving him a glare, he gulped at frantically changed the subject. "So, are we picking teams now or what?" He said.

`Alright now, should I call her or shouldn't I,' Ken debated with himself. God, this was harder than he thought. He had meant to do it this afternoon but…well… he chickened out at the last minute. So, Ken figured doing it over the phone would be easier. He looked at the phone in his hand and tried to remember her number. His brain couldn't seem to remember it. Was it 869 or 986 or something?

Furiously, he looked around his desk for the piece of paper that had her number on there. Finally, after ten minutes, he found it. It had been under his D3 this whole time. With his hands trembling, Ken dialed the number written on the paper. All he heard was a beep-beep-beep, signaling that someone was on the other line. The strange thing was, something inside him told him not to hang up, so, he didn't and just listened to the constant, yet rhythm tic sound.

* * *

"I don't know how to tell him Kari, I mean, what if he rejects me. He probably doesn't even like me in that way to begin with." Yolei said over the phone.

"I saw the way he was looking at you today, there was something there." The soft voice of Kari replied from the other line.

"What was there?" Yolei asked, surprised by Kari's reply. Was there really "something?" She hoped so. "Well, even if there was, who knew what that `something,' I mean, look at all the girls that flock at him every day. They're much prettier than I am and he could have any one of them. Why would he want me?"

"Yolei, you think too badly of yourself." Yolei was about to open her mouth to reply when suddenly, she heard a beeping. Someone must have been trying to call.

"Listen Kari, I'll call you back, someone's on the other line." She said before switching over. "Hello."

"Hello, is Yolei there," a kind and soft yet masculine voice asked.

"This is she."

"Hello Yolei, this is Ken. Um listen, I was wondering if er…you would like to um…spend some time with me maybe tomorrow. Maybe go out to lunch or… something." Yolei could feel herself smiling widely. Oh my god, he was asking her out on a date. She resisted the urge to pinch herself but instead, made a mental note to do that after she had put down the phone.

"Sure," she said, trying to keep the excitement down from her voice. "What kinds of things did you have in mind?"

"Well, just meet me at the park and we'll go from there."

"That'll be great! I'll be there. Well, see you tomorrow Ken."

"Bye Yolei. I'll see you tomorrow." They both hung up. She was stunned; did Ken really just call her? Yolei pinched the skin on her arm and was greeted by a stinging sensation. This meant the phone call wasn't a dream! "Yes, yes yes yes, YES! Perfecto!" She said, jumping up and down. She felt like she wanted to fly or sing out to the world her feelings for the indigo haired boy that had captured her heart with a butterfly net. She giggled at the mental image of Ken running around with a butterfly net chasing a heart-shaped butterfly.

"What's the matter Yolei? I heard your shouting." Hawkmon said, poking his head in her room. In an instant, Yolei picked up the poor digimon and started spinning him in the air and giving the poor thing a bear hug.

"Oh my god, Kari!" She suddenly realized she had hung up on Kari. Letting go of her bird digimon from her death grip, she furiously started to punch in Kari's number. Hawkmon, while trying to stop the room from spinning and stabilized his breathing, wondered why his friend was happier than usual.

"Sorry, I hung up on you Kari but guess what! Ken just asked me out!"

Breathing a sigh of relief, Ken set the phone down. That had to be the hardest thing he has ever done. This comes from a digidestined who was on the dark side once and battled a champion digimon that went by the name of Malomyotismon. Alright, he was worried that she wouldn't accept but she did and he couldn't help feeling a type of warmth spread throughout his body. Lying down on his bed, Ken wondered if this was going to be the start of a relationship. Not that he minded having a relationship with Yolei, of course. He actually was looking forward to the day tomorrow when he would be spending it with a person he was extremely fond of. Yet, was it just a fondness or something more than that? Ken had to wait till tomorrow to find out.
