Chapter 2: First Day

"Today's the big day," Daisuke told himself as he parked in the teacher's parking lot of the school. "New school, new faces. I hope I can make a good impression." He looked up in his rear view mirror and adjusted his tie, then got out of the car, grabbing his briefcase in the process.

"Excuse me," said a voice behind him. Daisuke quickly turned around to face the owner of the voice.

"Yes?" he said to the dark haired man standing behind him.

"I'm sure you're in a rush and all, and I'm not trying to be mean, but you parked in my spot."

"I did?" Daisuke looked down at the parking block in front of his car. On the front there was a name painted in black letters: Mr. Ken Ichijouji.

"Whoops," said Daisuke with a nervous chuckle. "I'll move it right away." 'Way to go, doofus,' he thought to himself as he fumbled for the keys to his door. 'You're already messing up!'

"It's alright," said the guy known as Mr. Ichijouji. "I've already found another parking space for the day. I'll have that one back tomorrow. My name's Ken by the way." He extended his hand towards Daisuke.

"Daisuke," Daisuke said, returning the handshake.

"This your first day on the job?"

"Yeah, pretty much," said Daisuke as they began walking towards the school.

"Don't be too nervous. The kids aren't that bad. Just don't let them hog tie you."

Daisuke looked at Ken awkwardly as he started laughing. "I'm only kidding," he said. "They're actually pretty nice kids, once you get to know them." They went inside the school and to the Principal's Office to punch in. As they were leaving, they passed by Miss Takenouchi. They waved to her, and Daisuke almost caught himself staring at her again.

"Don't stare too hard," Ken said, grinning. Daisuke made a "you've got to be kidding" face at him.

"How can someone be that fine, and yet older than me?" Daisuke asked.

"How old are you?"

"Twenty-five."

"I see. She's just one of those types that takes care of her body properly. How else would you expect a thirty-four year old woman to look?"

"I don't know, a few wrinkle lines on her face, somewhat plump around her waist maybe?"

"Those may be the type that you find in America. A scary sight, if you happen to ask me."

"You've been to America?"

"Only for two years. I taught at Central High School in Beaumont, Texas while there."

"Where's Texas?"

"Somewhere in the south. Well, this is where we part ways." They arrived at Ken's classroom, P130. "Why don't you come to the cafeteria to eat there at lunch time? You can meet some of the other teachers as well."

"Okay. I may have to come here, since I won't know where you sit exactly."

"Just go into the middle section of the cafeteria and look for me. Good luck up there."

"Thanks," Daisuke said, as he headed towards the stairs. He made his way to the third floor and to his classroom. Along the way, he noticed a few other teachers settling into their classrooms. He waved to a few of them. As he passed by the blocked off doors leading to the fourth floor, he thought he saw someone out the corner of his eye at the top of the stairs through the porthole. He quickly turned his head towards the window, but saw no one there. Furrowing his eyebrows slightly, he continued on to his classroom.

'My, this place is creepy,' he thought as he entered the room and set his briefcase on his desk. He opened it and took out a few items that he would need, then set the briefcase on the side of his desk. 'I wonder why no one ever made mention of that floor?' He walked over to the window and rose it up, letting the cool morning breeze flow into the room. He looked down at the large crowd of lingering students below, reminiscing on his high school days. He grinned, remembering the small soccer games that he used to play before school started. He was brought out of his thoughts as the bell sounded for the students to make their way to their classrooms. He watched them as they all filed into the school, then turned from the window.

"Moment of truth, Daisuke," he said as he went to go stand outside. He greeted each student who came into the classroom, who looked at him strangely since they weren't used to teachers greeting them. The bell sounded for class to start, and Daisuke walked in and closed the door. He went to the front of his desk and sat on the edge of it, picking up the clipboard behind him.

"Good morning, class," he started off. "I'm the new History teacher, Daisuke Motomiya. Since this is homeroom, I won't be teaching anything, so don't worry." A few chuckles sounded from a few students. "Now, I'm going to call role. If I get your name wrong, please don't hesitate to correct me..."
**********************

Lunch time rolled around a little quicker than Daisuke expected. He found his way to the cafeteria easily enough, despite the large crowds of students packing the halls. The cafeteria was composed of three parts: Lunchroom A, the middle section, and Lunchroom B. The doors, obviously, led into the middle section, where most of the teachers and staff would eat at the tables set towards the back. This section also housed the lines to get the food. There was the hamburger line which was always full, the oriental line, the pizza line, and the country line. On the opposite wall was a consession stand where you could buy other types of snacks like chicken baskets, ramen bowls, chips, and drinks. In the lunchrooms there were bake stands where sweets and cakes were bought, like cinnamon rolls and mocchi. This is where Daisuke was now, in Lunchroom A, purchasing a donut and a carton of milk. He walked into the middle section and looked around.

'This place is really crowded,' he thought to himself. He spotted Ken amongst three tables on the far end of the room. Ken noticed him and waved him over. Daisuke made his way over to the table and sat down next to a guy with blond hair.

"Did you have trouble finding the place?" Ken asked.

"I nearly got ran over by a bunch of students on the way," Daisuke replied jokingly. Ken chuckled a little.

"This is Takeru Takashi, by the way," he said, introducing Daisuke to the blond head. "He teaches Language Arts."

"Pleased to make your acquaintance," Takeru said, extending his hand out to Daisuke.

"The pleasure's all mine," Daisuke said, returning the hand shake. "You're really into your line of work, aren't you?"

"Well, I try my best. How are you liking the school so far?"

"It's okay, even though I've only been here for just five hours teaching a bunch of unruly kids."

"Sure wit, I like that."

"I hear that you transferred from another school, am I correct?" Ken asked inquisitively.

"My, news travel quick. But, yeah. I transferred from TJH, and I'm staying with my sister who's in college right now studying to be a doctor. Who told you anyway?"

"The assistant principal."

"Great, we have an assistant principal that's both fine and a gossiper."

"You don't know the half of it," Takeru said.

"I don't think I want to know," Daisuke said. "Mind if I ask a question?"

"It's a free country, I think."

"What's the deal with the fourth floor? I mean, why is it blocked off?"

"Can't really say too much about it, of course, there's not much to know about it. The only thing I can tell you is that an accident happened some years ago, some time before I came here."

"How long have you been teaching here?"

"Three years."

"Both of you?"

Ken and Takeru nodded their heads. "Why do you want to know about the floor anyway?" Ken asked.

"I'm just curious," Daisuke said, taking a bite out of his donut. "It seems kind of creepy, due to it being the only floor touched by this accident."

"Creepy?" Takeru asked.

"Yeah. I'm sure I keep seeing..."

"What?" Ken asked.

"Whoa."

"You keep seeing 'whoa'?" Takeru asked.

"I'm sorry," Daisuke said. "But who is that?"

Ken and Takeru turned around to look in the direction he was looking. Behind them was a lady with long lavender hair heading to the table behind Ken.

"Oh, that's uh, that's Miyako," Ken said with a smirk on his face as he turned back around. He looked at Takeru who had a smirk on his face as well.

"Not her, the one behind her," Daisuke said. Takeru looked towards the table again. Another lady with brown hair pulled into a braided ponytail sat down at the same table as Miyako.

"Aw, that's just Hikari," he said dismissively, turning back around. "Nice girl, but can be a bit temperamental at times."

"She must be cute when she's angry."

"I've never stuck around to find out."

"She doesn't look that bad."

"So go talk to her," Ken said, biting into his sandwich.

Daisuke gave him a bewildered look. "What?"

"What, am I speaking English? Get up, and go talk to her."

"Are you crazy?! I don't even know her like that!"

"You can get to know her," Takeru said.

"Have you ever tried talking to her?" Daisuke asked, turning towards him.

"If I did, it would be on friendly terms, nothing more."

"Why not?"

"She's not my type. Besides, she's not much of a looker in my book. Now, the Librarian, Catherine? She's hot!"

"A French girl that can speak Japanese with that accent would turn any man out," Ken said.

"I'm sorry, you guys just lost me," Daisuke said.

"It's the Librarian. She got here a year or so after we did," Takeru said.

"Excuse me?" a voice said from behind them. The guys turned to see Miyako standing over them and looking at Daisuke. "Hi, you must be Daisuke."

"Yes I am," Daisuke said, standing up.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Miyako Inoue, the Guidance Counselor here at this school. This is Hikari Yagami, the Reading teacher."

"Pleasure to meet you, Mrs-"

"Miss," Hikari said flatly. She had no expression on her face whatsoever, and if she did it was very hard to tell.

"Oh, uh sorry. Pleasure to meet you Miss Yagami," Daisuke corrected.

"Charmed." She turned to Miyako. "I'm heading out," she said. She turned and sauntered off.

"Did...I do something wrong?" Daisuke asked.

"No, you didn't. Her brother just died two weeks ago in a car accident, and she's still mourning over him. Plus, I think she's mad at me for forcing her over here. So don't be surprised if she's a bit edgy. So anyway, how are you liking your first day so far?"

"It's okay. Nothing bad's happened yet."

'Except I keep seeing ghosts,' he thought.

"I see that you've made friends with the staff cretins," she said, referring to Ken and Takeru, who glared at her.

"Uh, yeah," Daisuke said, grinning at the playful behavior she was showing.

"Well, Mr. Motomiya, I'm going to go catch up to Hikari. Again, I apologize for her behavior. She'll calm down in time." She turned and walked off.

"Uh, see you," Daisuke said nervously, sitting down again. "That was weird."

"I'm sure it was," Ken said. "Anyway, back to what we were talking about earlier. You said that you saw something?"

"Yeah. Are there ghosts on that floor?"

"Not a clue. Never been up there. Like Takeru mentioned before, we only know bits and pieces. I doubt enyone else around here knows the full story."

"I think it should be something worth investigating, don't you think?"

"I would, if I didn't want to keep my job anymore," Takeru said. "Accordingly, we're not supposed to be talking about the floor in the first place."

"I guess curiosity kills in more ways than one."

"So does losing your job. It would behoove you not to mention it out loud."

"Point taken."
*****************

The day ended well, with Daisuke getting along with a few students. After they all left to go home, Daisuke stayed in the classroom to grade the last of the day's assignments. As he was doing this, the sound of light whispering caught his attention. He looked up sharply, expecting to see someone there, but there was no one.

"Huh," he said. "Must be hearing things." He went back to grading papers again. After a minute, he heard the whispering again, this time a little louder.

"Is someone there?" he asked loudly, looking up again. No answer. He got up and went to the door and peeked both ways down the hall. No one was around. All the other classrooms were closed with the lights off, indicating that the teachers all went home except him. Now he was starting to get a little spooked.

"I can always finish grading these at home," he said, walking back to his desk. He picked up his briefcase from the side of the desk, opened it, and began placing his things in it. He dropped his stapler on the ground and bent to pick it up. As he did, he looked ahead under the space of the desk and saw a pair of child like legs that had burn marks and blood oozing down on them onto a pair of white shoes. Daisuke quickly shot up, banging his head on the edge of the desk in the process, causing him to yelp in pain. He looked around while rubbing the back of his head, but no one there. He stuffed his stapler inside his bag, closed it up, and headed out the door.

'What in God's name is going on?" he thought as he made his way down the hall towards the stairs. He turned his head away from the double doors leading to the fourth floor- he was spooked enough already- and took the stairs next to them leading down. Lucky for him, he didn't look back and see the transparent figure at the top of the stairs, watching him as he left.

Down on the first floor, Daisuke hurried towards the front of the school. As he was leaving, he passed by Hikari's room, which was still open, and her sitting at the desk, grading test papers. He stopped and backed up, stopping in front of her door. He stared at her for a second, wondering how she didn't hear him walking past her door. He cleared his throat to get her attention, and she looked up at him sharply, a stern look on her beautiful face.

"Hello again, Miss Yagami," he said with a grin on his face. She continued to look at him sternly which made him feel a little uneasy.

"May I help you?" she asked flatly.

"I was just passing by, getting ready to leave, and I just stopped to say hi."

"Is that all?"

Daisuke hesitated. "Um...yes, I suppose," he said.

"Then why are you still in front of my door?"

Daisuke started backing up slowly. "I guess that means I should..."

"NOW."

"Leaving!" Daisuke said, jetting away from the door.

"Cute," Hikari muttered, turning back to her work.

'Jeez, what's her problem?' Daisuke thought as he headed towards the front door. 'I understand that her brother died, but does she have to act like that towards everyone?' He emerged from the building and began walking towards the parking lot. Along the way, he spotted Takeru walking towards the gym in a pair of red shorts, a white T-shirt, and some white tennis shoes. A silver whistle hung around his neck and a red baseball cap rested on his head, and he carried a clipboard with a few sheets of paper on it.

'Wonder what he's doing?' he thought, turning in his direction. Takeru turned towards the sound of his name being called, and saw Daisuke walking up to him.

"Hey! It's the new guy!" he said cheerfully. Daisuke scowled lightly at him.

"I have a name, you know," he said.

"I was just kidding you," Takeru said, slapping him playfully on the shoulder.

Daisuke let out a dry chuckle. "What are you doing?"

"Getting ready for basketball practice. We have a game scheduled in October against the Okinawan Pandas."

"That sounds very ironic for a team name," Daisuke said as they walked inside the gym. "Mind if I watch?"

"Not at all. It's not as ironic as our team name being the Odaibah Tanukis."

"I see." The inside of the gym wasn't too grand, but it was better than some others that he's seen before. The ceiling was even lined with a balcony. Without the bleachers, the hoops, and the scoreboard, the whole place could pass for a souped-up warehouse. On one set of bleachers sat a group of boys all dressed in blue jerseys with gold stripes on the sides, matching shorts, and black basketball shoes, talking amongst themselves. They all stood up when they saw Takeru walking their way.

"Alright, listen up for your names," Takeru said, taking the clipboard from under his arm. He began reading off the names, all of them answering present.

"Looks like everyone's here. Now, as you know, we have a game next month against the Pandas. Also as you know, they have thirteen straight victories in a period of over three years to our nine. That's only four ahead of us, but that doesn't mean that we should take them lightly. So, until our time to shine gets here, we're going to practice a bit harder. There will be a few changes to our practice routine, so make sure you get a good stretch today."

"Is Motomiya-san helping?" one of the students asked. Daisuke recognized him as one of his students in his fourth period class.

"No, he's just here to watch," Takeru said. "Now, here's what we're going to do..."

Daisuke watched with mixed enthusiasm as Takeru carefully went throught the routines with the basketball players. It kind of reminded him of sort of a boot camp session, but less stressful. It was a quarter after six when they were done for the evening. The students, of course, were tired and hurting from the rigorous practice.

"Don't worry," Takeru said. "A few more practices of this, and you'll get used to it. Just get some good rest tonight, and I'll see you same time tomorrow." The students let out a groan as they stumbled out the door, holding on to each other.

"You weren't pulling any punches with them," Daisuke said, coming down from the bleachers.

"The Pandas are a hard team. I know their coach. We went to college together." They walked out of the gym into the warm evening air. The setting sun cast a luminous red-orange glow amongst the clouds. Takeru stopped to lock the gym doors.

"That's a nice sunset," Daisuke said as they began walking towards te parking lot. "Reminds me of the rice paddies at my grandparents' house out in the country."

"Are you from the country?"

"Me? No. Me and my older sister used to frequent our grandparents' house during the summer when we were young. I used to stand out in the paddies and watch the sun set beyond the fields. It was always something to enjoy, that is, until my grandma would call me in to clean up the mess I made in the kitchen."

Takeru chuckled lightly. "You were quite the trouble maker when you were little, huh?"

"Not really," Daisuke said, chuckling as well. "I was blamed for my sister's mistakes most of the time."

"Ah. The old sibling rivalry bit. I know about that. I have an older brother myself. What does your sister do again?"

"She's in college, studying to be a doctor. What about your brother?"

"He's an accountant for some oddball law firm. I keep trying to convince him to take up NASA's offer on that space expedition."

"The law firm must not pay that well, huh?"

"It pays decently, but the NASA program pays a whole lot better."

"Wouldn't that mean he would have to leave Japan?"

"Not necessarily. The program is stationed in Nagano, not too far from here."

"That'll work." They reached their cars. Daisuke opened his door and placed his bag on the passenger's seat.

"Hey, Takeru," he said, getting Takeru's attention before he got in his car.

"Yo," Takeru said, turning towards him.

"You were right about Miss Yagami. She is a bit temperamental. I tried to say hi to her, and she nearly bit my head off."

"Told you," Takeru said, hopping into his car. "I'll see you tomorrow." He started his car, backed out of his space, and drove away. Daisuke got into his car as well.

"She really is cute when she's angry," he said to himself as he drove out of the parking lot.
**********************

It was six thirty by the time Daisuke pulled into the parking lot of the apartment complex. The sky had already darkened considerably, and a few stars were visible. He got out of his car and walked tiredly up the stairs to his sister's apartment.

'This place needs to install some elevators,' he thought. 'Either that, or I need to drink more energy drinks. Why couldn't she have an apartment on the first floor?' Her apartment, unfortunately, was on the fifth floor, and it was right in the middle of a long outside corridor. Daisuke was ready to drop by the time he reached the door.

'As many times as I climb steps here and at school, I could kick a soccer ball all the way to the moon,' he thought. He was about to grab his house key, when he noticed that the door was cracked open a notch.

'What the...?' He pushed the door open slowly- it opened with no sound- and crept inside, taking his shoes off silently.

'If someone tried to break in here, they'll be quite disappointed,' he thought. 'My sister has nothing of value to steal.' He closed the door silently, and was about to go around the corner when he heard soft moaning and heavy panting. It was then that he noticed the faint blue light illuminating the area.

'Oh no,' he thought dejectedly. He silently walked into the living room and saw a sight he wish he didn't have to see. His sister and some guy were in a position on the couch where Jun was straddling his waist, and he was lying down, holding on to her hips. While he was completely naked with only his socks on, Jun only wore a T-shirt with no bra, where her round breasts and hard, pink nipples were visible through the slightly transparent fabric. Her hands were placed on his chest and her head was thrown back with her eyes closed as she slowly moved up and down on his member. Her mouth was slightly open, giving testimony to where the moans were coming from. The guy thrust into her, keeping pace. His eyes were closed as well, and he was breathing heavily. Neither one of them saw nor heard Daisuke enter the room, in part because the couch they were on was faced in a direction that was parallel to the opposite wall and next to the hallway leading to the bedrooms.

Daisuke shook his head and reached over to flip on the light switch next to the door. The reaction he got was comical. Both of them started scrambling around on the couch, which ended up with Jun falling on the floor, and the guy grabbing a throw pillow and quickly placing it over his groin.

"DAISUKE, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" Jun shouted as she dived behind the sofa to hide herself. Daisuke just stood there, bent over and holding his ribs, cracking up.

"This isn't funny! How long have you been standing there?"

"Long enough," Daisuke managed to answer before laughing again.

"I'm going to kick your butt when I get dressed!" Jun cried, bolting for her room. Daisuke looked over at the guy who was still on the couch, holding the pillow over his now limp member. He grinned and waved nervously at Daisuke. Daisuke went and sat down in the chair at the opposite side of the room, smiling the whole time.

"So, may I have the name of the guy who was boning my sister just now?" he asked.

"Um, Yamato Ishida," the guy said.

"Uh huh. And how old are you?"

"Twenty-nine?" Daisuke looked him over. His blonde hair and set face reminded him of Takeru.

"You wouldn't happen to know a guy named Takeru Takaishi, do you?"

"Yes, that's my younger brother. He's a teacher at Odaibah High."

"I thought as much."

"Matt, get up and put your clothes on," Jun said, walking into the living room with her jeans and a long blue shirt on.

"Matt?" Daisuke asked.

"Just a nickname," Yamato said, sitting up and putting his clothes on. Jun stood in front of him to block Daisuke's view. She looked back and glared at him.

"What are you looking at me like that for?" he asked.

"Because you walked in on us," she said.

"Hey, you're the one who left the door cracked open, and you knew I was coming home. If you were going to be doing this, you could have at least done it in your room."

Jun rolled her eyes at him, and turned back to Yamato, who had just finished putting his clothes on and stood up. "I'm sorry, baby," she said, putting her arms around his neck.

"It's okay," he said, kissing her on the lips. Daisuke was heard in the background gagging. Jun shot the finger at him. "I have to go anyway. It's going to be a late night at the office."

"Don't stay up too late," Jun said, walking him to the door.

"I'll try not to," he said as he stepped outside.

"See you later, 'Matty'!" Daisuke sang. Jun shot the finger at him again from around the corner.

"Bye, babe," Jun said, kissing him again. She closed the door as he left, then turned her full wrath on Daisuke.

"DAISUKE, YOU JERK!" she shouted, coming around the corner and swinging at him. Daisuke jumped up from the chair and dodged the blow, laughing the whole time. She ran over to the couch and snatched up the pillow, and threw it at Daisuke.

"Hey! He had his penis on that thing!" he cried, batting it away with his fist.

"You didn't have to walk in on us. You could have just left until we were done."

"You know, I really didn't want to hear that."

"Well, you heard it. And now, I have to use my hand to finish off."

"Uh, Jun. Please stop. You're going to give me nightmares."

"You know how I am when I'm horny," she said, picking up the pillow and setting it back on the couch. She walked into the kitchen and Daisuke went back into the living room to sit down.

"Actually, I don't and I really don't care to know about it. I don't think anything's worse than someone having nightmares of their own siblings beating off."

"Shut up," she said. She got a glass out of the cabinet and poured herself some water from the faucet. "So how was your first day?"

"It was okay. I made a few friends already."

"One obviously being Matt's brother...Takeru, was it?"

"Yeah. He's a little weird, but still cool. Then there's Ken, who looks as if he could pass for a Japanese Fabio."

"Who?"

"Fabio. You know, Mr. French who played on those I Can't Believe It's Not Butter commercials."

Jun just looked at him strangely.

"He's got the...nevermind. Anyway, he's cool people too. There's this one girl named Miyako. I don't know a thing about her because we didn't talk for very long."

"Is she cute?"

"What?"

"Is she cute?"

"What are you, a lesbian now? What does that have to do with anything?"

"Just answer the question. Is she cute, or not?"

"Yeah, why?"

"I was just curious. So who else did you meet?" She took a sip of her water.

Daisuke stared at her for a few seconds. "It's a shame that I can't even understand my own sister," he said.

"My life is not for you to understand," she said. "Now continue."

Daisuke shook his head with a sigh. "There's another girl named Hikari. From what I know, her brother just died in a car accident about two weeks ago."

"Oh, that was her brother?" Jun asked, slightly shocked.

"You knew him?"

"No, but the accident occured when I was on my way to class that day. I saw his picture in the obituaries. It said his name was Taichi, I believe. He didn't look too bad."

"Yeah, well now she's got this attitude towards everyone. I tried to say hi to her, and she nearly bit my head off."

"I would be that way too if you died," Jun said. "You know I care for you."

"And I thank God for a sister like you, too," he said, getting up. "Anyway, I'm going to soak in the tub for about fifty minutes, then I'm going to bed."

"Why? It's only 6:45."

"I was up since 5:30. I have to stay up anyway and grade the rest of these papers." He picked up his briefcase from the ground. "By the way, where was that light coming from?"

"What light?"

"That sky blue light that I saw."

"Oh, you mean this?" she said, pointing to a night light that was plugged into the wall socket sitting above the kitchen counter. "It comes on automatically when the lights are cut off. I use it to get around when I'm looking to get something to drink, or a late night snack."

"And yet, you somehow manage to keep your figure." Jun glared at him over her glass. Daisuke smirked at her. "So how long have you known this guy?"

"Long enough," she said, repeating his words back to him.

"I guess that's fair," he said. "See you."
***************************

Later that night, after soaking in the tub for almost an hour, Daisuke was in his room with the lamp on, grading test papers. He had a hard time because he kept nodding off.

"Oh, man," he said, rubbing his face with his hands. "I should be used to this now. I guess all of the excitement that was going on today really drained me." He looked through the papers he was grading.

"Only five more," he said. "These shouldn't take very long to grade. I can do this before class tomorrow." He stacked the papers together and set them on the desk next to his bed. He set his alarm on his clock, turned off the light and snuggled under the covers, but didn't go to sleep. He was thinking about the bloody legs he saw in front of his desk, which also brought back the memory of him bumping his head. He subconsciously rubbed the back of his head.

'Something's going on at that school,' he thought, closing his eyes. 'I intend to find out what it is, no matter the consequences.'
