"Attention class," the dark haired teacher said loudly to be heard over the noisy room.

Davis looked up from the daydream he'd been having about a soccer game that was coming up. Glancing over to his right he saw that Kari and T.K had done the same. Davis felt a jolt of rage seeing T.K whisper something in Kari's ear, making her giggle. He turned his attention back to the teacher at the front of the class. She waited until the class of kids had settled down before continuing.

"We have a new student that will be joining us," she stated plainly.

"Big deal" Davis thought with a small yawn. The class he was in seemed to be going way too slow. The fact that he was bored out of his mind didn't help either.

The lady teacher gave the class a stern look.

"I want you all to be especially considerate to this new student."

That got the classes attention. Davis didn't know any teacher that had said something like that. He sat up straighter in the uncomfortable desk to get a better look. The metal door of the classroom open slowly and a figure walked in. Whispers and soft gasps broke out among the people sitting near the front. This only proved to make Davis almost pull a muscle in his neck to see the new student as from his position he couldn't see very well.

The girl that stood up next to the teacher was almost unnaturally pretty. She was dressed in a light blue pair of jeans and a strawberry pink tank top with a slight V neckline. She also had on white band around her wrists and a black pair of runners. She stood a little over Kari's height. She had the most beautiful hair Davis had ever seen, a dark honey color that reflected the light of the class. Her hair was cut in an odd fashion. The back was styled in so that it hung down just below the tops of her ears. She had two longer strips along the sides of her head that ended below her chin and had short bangs along her forehead. Large emerald green eyes peered out shyly from a heart shaped face, not looking at any one person in the room but focusing on a point somewhere on the ground. Davis forgot to breathe for about five seconds from just looking at her. This is about the point when he noticed why everyone around him was laughing softly and talking among each other. Extending from the back of the girl's spine was a long, cat-like tail covered in fur the same shade as her hair. It stunned everyone in the room when her tail swished nervously.

The teacher cleared her throat loudly, reminding Davis of an old foghorn, "Class this is Melody Blake. She'll be working in this class so make her feel welcome."

A few laughs followed this introduction but no one spoke out loud.

The teacher smiled kindly at Melody and directed her to an empty seat near the front of the class. Davis noticed that she moved with a shy, defeated motion, like the weight of the world was on her shoulders. Her head was bowed and her tail swayed when she walked. Occasionally it would twitch sharply, making the people near her move away. Once Melody had sat down the teacher continued her lecture and Davis let his mind wander once again.

Davis gathered up the cafeteria's very poor excuse for a meatloaf from the counter and headed towards the table his friends were sitting at. Kari, Davis's not so secret crush, was there with T.K, Cody and Yoglei. Falling into a seat next to Cody he listened to the conversation.

"Have you guys seen the new girl everyone's talking about," Yoglei asked in a rather excited voice.

"Uh huh," T.K managed to say around a mouthful of baked beans.

"It's all over the school that she's got a tail. Is its true?" Cody asked in his always-calm sounding voice.

Kari answered for T.K since he was shoveling the goop of the day into his mouth at an alarming rate.

"Ya, it is. Her names Melody and her tail makes her look really bazaar."

This really surprised Davis as Kari had always struck him as being some one who care for everyone.

"Bazaar," Yoglei scoffed loudly, "she's just a downright freakshow."

Melody was not looking forward to entering the lunchroom but her hunger won over her fear. Pushing open the large swinging doors she stepped into the loud room hope no one would notice her. Luck was not with her today. Almost every pair of eyes in the room lifted to stare at her. She walked meekly to the counter with her head bowed in a very non-threating way and did not protest when a blacked hair boy with mean eyes push in front of her. Choosing a meal of brunt rice and beef stew she turned and scanned the room. Melody noticed a small group of kids at a table close to her. She recognized three of them from her class before. The boy she'd heard the teacher call Davis had short, dark brown hair that was spiked, a pretty girl with short, sandy brown hair held back by a clip was sitting across from him. Beside her was a tall boy with blond hair wearing a very unfashionable tan colored hat. There were two more people with them that Melody didn't recognize. A young boy with very dark brown hair and green eyes that showed he was wise beyond his years and a girl with purple hair and very large glasses.

She turned and looked for a table spotting a nearly empty one near the back. Melody began to move towards it.

"Hey Monkey Girl," a loud and rude voice called out.

Turning Melody saw the blacked hair boy again. She noticed he was very large and muscular.

"Probably plays on the football team" she thought dryly.

He sneered at her giving Melody the impression of a rattlesnake before it strikes.

"Have some milk kitty cat," he said in a mocking voice.

She never had any time to react before an open flying milk carton connected with the side of her face. Hysterical laughter broke out everywhere and Melody gave the boy a sharp look before moving on. A rather loud laugh caught her attention and she turned to she Davis and his friends almost rolling with laughter. Oddly enough, seeing that group laugh at her hurt more then all the other kids. Sitting at the empty table she picked up some of the napkins she had grabbed and wiped of the remaining white liquid from her face. Fortunately the carton had been thrown so hard that not much of the milk had gotten on her clothes or lunch. She began to eat the food on her tray ignoring the jeering voices around the room.

It had always been like this. Melody had transferred from 6 different schools in hopes that things would get better. She had grown used to the stares and name-calling and bullies who pushed her around. She'd been born with the tail that brought this onto her but she love who she was. Other looked at her strangely and pitied her because of her tail but Melody loved to be different even if others punished her for it. She had adjusted to the abuse the other student loved to put on her. Melody had always been strong, going through life as she had Melody had to be, but most would call her a survivor, but most people didn't know her well enough and that suited her just find. She loved her solitude thought it was lonely at times.

Fishing up the green Jell-O, she fished out the timetable from her pocket. Glancing up at the clock mounted on the wall, Melody noticed she still had 20 minutes before her next class. Wanting to know where all her rooms were before the bell so she won't get lost, Melody walked out of the lunchroom and looked for the room where she would be taking Math. It was rather easy to find. The computer room, however, was more difficult. After wandering aimlessly around the hallways for 10 minutes, she finally located the room.

Standing outside the door she was just about to turn and walk away when she hear a muffled THUM! , followed by the unmistakable sound of hushed voices. Melody opened the door.

"Hello," she called out to the empty room feeling very dumb. Melody stepped into the warm room and let her eyes roam up and down the rows of computers. Noticing a blue flash behind on one of the machines she peered around the computer small toy was resting against the back. It was about 5 inches tall with two small legs and arms. Small horn-like ears rested on top of its head and it had a white front and a blue back. Two coal black eyes that seemed to sparkle with life peered out at her.

"Hey little guy," she cooed softly. Picking up the small stuffed toy Melody cuddled it gently. Turning she began to walk away.

"Guess I'd better take you to the lost and found box," she said to herself. Just then the bell rang loudly.

"After school," she corrected.

Neither her nor the stuffed toy noticed that one of the computers had turned on and was glowing with a bright, white light.

Opening her locker, Melody placed the plushy in her open backpack so its head and arms were hanging over the side. Smiling she bent to pick up the books she would need for the next class.

"Hey you"

She didn't even needed to turn. Melody knew it would be the dark hair bully from the lunchroom. He approached her with the same sneer as before. His hand shot out and wrapped around her neck, slamming her back into the lockers. Melody's books fell to the floor as she struggled to breathe in the boys crushing grip.

"You think we run a circus for freaks or what," he said in an angry voice. The group of boys surrounding him cheered him on.

"I think we should teach you a lesson, ya little primeape. What da ya think boys?" the group all voiced agreement.

Melody was feeling lightheaded from the lack of oxygen when one of the boys yelled out.

"Teacher!!!"

The dark boy dropped her to the floor, "You just wait," he growled out in a low whisper.

The group fled down the hallway and Melody picked herself up. Gathering her books from the ground she glanced at the blue stuffed toy, looking completely adorable sticking out of her pack. Melody rummaged though her items and pulled out a white silk scarf. Wrapping it around her neck to cover up the bruises she could almost feel forming, she smiled sadly at the blue plushy.

"Don't look so surprised," Melody said sadly at the little creature, "I've had worse."

Closing the door she didn't notice the little toy lift its head and look at her with a mournful expression.
