Yeah, it's a lot of words. Anyway, enjoy the story.
Have you ever take a nap and, unexpectedly, wake up in
another country? It has happened to me. I had gotten sleepy
earlier today and decided to take a nap. I had a dream about
being in Japan, living in a traditional Japanese home, going to
a Japanese school, making friends, falling in love and
experiencing other things in Japanese culture. When I had
awaken, the dream came true. Now, in the middle of the night,
I'm lying on a futon in a dark room. I get up out of it,
feel for my glasses, put them on, and walk over to the door on
the right. I don't feel a handle, so I try sliding it open. It slides
open easily. The hallway is pretty dark. I fumble for a light
switch, careful not to knock anything over. I, finally, find one
and flip it on. I've never seen the inside of a Japanese house
before, so I decide to explore a little. Almost every room has
one of those doors that slides open. I walk to the living room(I
think it's a living room.), then straight to the entrance. By the
door, lies a mat made out of straw with my sneakers! 'How did
they get here?!' I think, picking them up. Becoming totally
confused, I sit them back down on the straw matt. I decide to
go back to bed and get some shut eye. I walk back through the
living room, flip off the light switch and went straight back to
the room I had been in. I slide the door shut, get into my futon,
pull up the covers and fall asleep. I hope that the next time I
wake up, I'll be back home in my own bed.
I slowly open my eyes. Sunlight shines through the door on
the right. I yawn and sit up. I rub the sleep from my eyes and get
out of my futon. I walk over to the door and open it.
"Whoa!" I exclaim. There's a huge garden with a small pond. A
bridge stretches across the pond. I walk up to the pond. I see
little fish swimming in it. "Yorande?" a feminine voice calls. I
look up and see a young, thin woman with long, straight, black
hair, big hazel eyes, a button nose and nice features. She
walks over to me and smiles. "Ohayo gozaimasu", she
says."Uh..." I say, confused. I can't speak Japanese, but I
guess what she had said means "good morning". "Good
Morning", I say. "Excuse me, but what is your name and how
did I get here?" "My name is Takashi Miyako", she replies.
"And Ill explain how you arrived here later. Right now, you
have to get ready for school." "O.K.", I reply, confused again.
The woman shows me where the bathroom was and I get
washed up the traditional Japanese way----on the floor. In the
bathroom, there is a hot tub. It's for relaxing, not bathing. After
getting dressed in some of my clothes that, mysteriously,
appeared here with me, I go into the kitchen. I don't feel like
much, so I just grab a piece dry toast. Takashi san(She had
told me to call her that since it's formal.)
tells me that she has to leave town to leave to visit her sick
grandma right away so she doesn't have time to pack my
lunch or drive me to school, but she had said I can buy a lunch
at school. She gives me some money(yen) and a map that
shows the way to my school. I pocket my yen and walk to the
genkan (entrance). On the tatami, I slip on my
sneakers and say "sayonara" to Takashi san.(She told me how.) She had said the school I'm going
to is called "Saiju
Elementary".
Eventually, I find the school. At it, I can where my
street clothes, but I have to change into special indoors
shoes.(Very formal in Japan.) Questions buzz through my
brain as I enter the school. I decide to put them off until
later. I don't know where the office is so I ask a slim man.
Luckily, he speaks and understands perfect English like
Takashi san. I thank him after we arrive outside the office
and go in. I ask one of the secretaries where my
classroom is. She told me to wait until the teacher arrives.
She explains that teachers aren't already in their
classrooms like teachers in America. They arrive later.(I
think. Bear with me.) So, I take a seat in one of the chair
and wait. After about half an hour, the bell rings. 15
minutes later, the secretary shows me to my assigned
classroom. I thank her. The secretary told me to wait until
I'm called. "We have a new exchange student joining us
today", I hear her announce. "Come in!" That's my cue to
open the door. I do. Everyone looks at me as I enter the
room. "Please approach the front of the class",the
teacher says. I walk up to the front of the classroom. The
teacher is slim with shoulder-length brown hair, brown
eyes, a small nose, and delicate features. She wears a
blue dress. She writes a name on the chalkboard. Mine.
"This is Inguramu Yorande", she says. "She's come all the
way from America so be nice to her, O.K.?" "O.K.!" the
class says in unison. "You can sit behind Naoko", the
teacher says, pointing to a girl with pigtails. I thank her
and claim my new seat. I hear whispering taunts. "She
looks weird", a girl whispers to another. "She SOUNDS
weird", the other whispers back. "Her voice is deep. Do all
Americans talk like that?" (A/N: Sorry if this sounds racist, but my voice is kind of deep. Please
don't be mad.) They laugh. "Quiet, please", the
teacher says, not turning from the chalkboard. They gab
about me some more. I struggle not to cry. I ignore them
as the teacher begins to explain the lesson in Japanese. I
can't speak Japanese let alone read it. How am I gonna
survive this school year? I sigh. My first day of school
is gonna be a disaster.
So what do you think so far? Read and review, please.
