Chapter 10 The Sad Truth About Mom
A/N: Last chapter!
It's been three years since my unexpected visit to
Japan. Everything is back to the way it should be. I had
to make up all the work I missed at my old, original
school. I still miss Kouji san and the others. I'm sitting
on my porch, barefoot. It's summer vacation. I,
suddenly, hear the screen door open. Mom comes out
and sits down on the porch swing. I turn my back to
her. "I'm sorry I pulled you away from your friends," She
starts. "But I couldn't let you miss school here." "I
could've made up the days at my school in Japan," I
mutter. Mom doesn't seem to hear me. "I love you so
much," Mom continues. "Do you know that?" 'If you
love me, you'd let me stay in Japan with all of my
friends,' I think, bitterly, but I answer: "Yes, Mom. I'm
going to the store." "O.K., dear," Mom says, rocking on
the porch swing. I stand up and go inside the house. I
run up to my room and grab my money on my dresser.
Slipping on my sandals, I run back down the stairs and
out the door.
I walk down the street. I get to the store
and go inside. I go straight to the freezer, open it, and grab a
Popsicle. Before I could close the freezer door, a hand
reaches past mine and grabs a Popsicle, too. A familiar
pale hand. I turn around and gasp. A tall, familiar boy with long, dark blue hair stands behind me. "K---K---Kouji san...?" I
stammer. He smiles. He's still wearing the bandana,
windbreaker, and white sneakers with the blue stripes,
but his T-shirt is white, and he's wearing a pair of blue
jeans. He's taller, too. A whole 2 feet! I feel tears
forming in my eyes. "Am I dreaming?" I ask. "Are you
really here?" Kouji san smiles again and pulls me into a
hug with popsicle in hand. I bury my face deep in his
chest. 'He still smells good,' I think. 'And he's still warm.
Ever so warm.' I sigh and stay my position for awhile, savoring the hug. I missed it. I let go and walk up to the
cashier to pay for my popsicle. So does Kouji san.
Then we both leave the store.
Kouji san walks home with me, just like in Japan.
We talk. I've missed him so much. He did ,too. He
tells me he's thought of me everyday, even when he
got mad at his dad or friends. He says that thinking of
me makes him happy and calms him down whenever
he's upset. I tell him I've thought of him, too. His
beautiful, hypnotizing, soft, ocean blue eyes. I see a
familiar car parked in front of my house. Takashi san's
here! I run up the steps and pull open the screen door,
but the voices of Takashi san and my mom talking stop
me. Kouji san comes in. He stops beside me. "You
can't hold onto her forever," Takashi san is saying.
"She has to make her own decisions in life." Don't tell
me how to raise my daughter!" I hear my mom yell.
"You didn't have her! I did!" "I know," Takashi san
replies. "But you're treating her like an object." "I am
NOT treating my daughter like some object!" Mom
continues to yell. "Don't come tell me
what to do!" "Calm down,"Takashi san says in a gentle
voice. " I just want what's best for her."You're trying to
steal my daughter away from me!" My mom sounds
hysterical. "I'm not trying to steal her away from you,"
Takashi san keeps her voice gentle. "Yorande chan
wants to live in Japan. She's made friends and found
love. She was happy there. Don't you want her to be
happy?" "She's happy here!" Mom shouts. "No, she's not,"
Takashi san says. "She's miserable. And
what you're doing is only adding onto her misery."
"GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!!" Mom screams."YOU'RE NOT TAKING
HER AWAY!!!! SHE'S MINE!!!" I jump back, startled.
Kouji san wraps his arms around me and holds me
tightly. I've known my mom to be so possessive of me.
She's like that with everything and everybody, but this
time she's gone too far. "You're too possessive,"
Takashi san says. "Just like your father." "You don't
know anything about my father!!!" Mom continues,
screaming. "I know your father beat you when you were
younger," Takashi san replies. "He locked you away
from the world and forced you to have intercourse with
him often. Are you going to lock Yorande chan away
from her friends and family? Away from the world?
Away from LIFE?" "SHUT UP!!!" Mom screams. I start to
cry. Kouji san hugs me, soothing me.
I've seen bruises on my mom, but she never told me
how or why she got them. Now I know. I run out the
house, not wanting to hear anymore. I run all the way to a
tree in the park. I try to climb it, but it's hard with
sandals. I hear rapid footsteps running towards me. I
turn around and see Kouji san rushing up to me. He
wipes my tears away with both hands. I hug him tight,
never wanting to let go. Kouji san rubs my back,
comforting me.Takashi san. "Is
Mom all right?" I ask. Takashi san nods. "She's just
shaken up from her past. She's going to start counseling,
soon." "Where is she now?" Kouji san asks. "With a
neighbor," Takashi san replies. "They're going to take her
to the hospital for medical attention. Apparently, I may
have brought out a side to her that has been hidden for
years when I was talking to her. That's probably why she
snapped." "Don't say that," I say, letting go of Kouji san
and hugging her. "You did what was right. That side to her
would've came out sooner or later. If not me, then
somebody else." Takashi san nods. "You're right. Well,
let's go." "Am I going back to Japan?" I ask, as all three of
us walk to her car. "Hai," Takashi san replies. "It's why Kouji san came here for.
To come and take you back to Japan. I came with him. He
wanted and was going to convince your mom to let you come back, but
he had a strong urge to see you. That's why you saw him
in the store. So I took his place and talked to your mom.
And that's when you heard us talking." "Oh," I say. "Poor
Mom. No wonder she held onto me." We drive back to my
house and get my clothes and stuff, then go to the airport.
As you may have guessed, I go back to Japan to stay.
Forever. I'm happy and sad at the same time. My mom's starting
her counseling. She stays with Grandma. She never
knew the truth about Mom because Grandpa threatened to
kill her if she ever told. I tell Takuya san and the others the
whole story. They all hope she gets the helps she needs,
but they're all glad I'm back in Japan. Me, too, but don't
think I don't love and care about my mom. I do. It's just
forcing me away from the people I love made me sad and
angry, but ever since I heard the truth about Mom, I have
a different viewpoint on why she made me come home.
She was scared and needed someone to hold onto for
comfort. She's been traumatized for years, but thank
goodness she's getting help. This is the end of my story.
Maybe you're wondering if you'll ever magically appear in
a place or get a chance to go to a place you've always
wanted to go. Well, anything is possible. Just keep on
dreaming 'cause dreams DO come true.
