Disclaimer: We don't own Digimon. I wouldn't mind having NiseDrimogemon, but, no.
Also, don't flame me because I wrote tragedy or bad tragedy. I can't write stellar tragedy for my life.
It was a few years ago that he died; yet everyone remembered it like yesterday.
Yolei and Ken were happily married and had three kids, many friends, Hawkmon, Wormmon, Minomon, Poromon, and Leafmon, and a future.
One doctor's appointment changed that in a flash.
"You should go see a doctor; you haven't seen one for a while," Yolei said.
"I've seen Joe."
"Joe's a Digimon doctor, not a human doctor. Besides, I'm worried about you. You've been tired lately and you've lost weight."
"I've just been working too hard."
"Still, go."
"I still want to know how I got into this," Stingmon said. Ken had roped Stingmon into coming to the doctor's office, and now he was complaining.
"Ichijouji, Ken." A receptionist called his name. Ken got up and he and Stingmon walked over to the room.
After a long grueling physical, the doctor said that Ken seemed fine, but the tests would tell the truth.
Two weeks later, the phone rang.
"Mr. Ichijouji?"
"Yes."
"This is the doctor's office. I'm afraid the news isn't good. You and your family will have to come down here."
With a worried look on his face, Ken told Yolei.
Ken, Yolei, their three children, and the five Digimon were in the office. All their friends were waiting near the phones for what was wrong with Ken.
The doctor walked in with a sad look on his face.
"Ken, I'm afraid that you have a type of stomach cancer that is incurable. I'm sorry, but you don't have long to live."
Ken couldn't believe it.
He was dying?
Why him?
That went through everyone's minds as they heard the news.
It was four months later. Ken was bedridden. He was struggling to live. The doctor told the people and Digimon that they better say goodbye now.
Matt and Gabumon were the first ones to enter the hospital room. They were shocked at what Ken looked like. Ken was skeletal. He was so weak; he could barely turn his head. When he saw Matt, though, a frail smile crossed his face.
"Matt, Gabumon, hi."
"Ken, I guess this is it. You were a proud person."
"Not what I want to hear before I die."
"Oh no, I was referring to the pride you had when you married Yolei and when your kids were born. And also when we were in Mexico, you had a look of pride and courage when Stingmon knocked down the control spire. I know courage is Tai and Davis's crest, but it was there."
"You really think I was courageous?"
"Yes. We'd better go."
Matt and Gabumon left the room.
The next to enter were Mimi and Palmon, back from America to say goodbye to Ken.
"Um, I didn't know you well, but you were cool. True, I hated you when you were the Digimon Emperor, but as you stopped being evil, you were one of the better friends."
"Your cooking isn't as bad as it used to be."
"I." Mimi ran out of the room in tears.
Palmon was still in there, and had one thing to say.
"If and when I ever see you again, I'll still tickle you with my Poison Ivy for trying to put a dark spiral on me."
Then Palmon and Ken looked at each other and laughed. It was an old joke between them.
Izzy and Tentomon were next.
"Well," Tentomon said, "you're going down. You've put up a good fight, but now it's time to go."
"You're not helping Tentomon.'
"Sorry. It's the only way I know of to say goodbye."
Embarrassed, Tentomon left the room.
"Have I ever told you that you were smarter than me?"
"You're just saying that, Izzy."
"No, I mean it. You were always smarter than me. I could have never done what you've done. I could never have created the control spires, the evil spirals, or seen the wrong I've done.
"You figured out how to stop Diaboromon. Tai told me."
"I could never get my Digimon to DNA Digivolve."
"Well, you're just as lucky. Tentomon can digivolve to ultimate and mega without another Digimon. MegaKabuterimon and HerculesKabuterimon is an exquisite Digimon."
"So's Paildramon, Imperialdramon, all its modes, Dinobeemon and GranKuwagamon."
"Hey, are you two going to spend the rest of your time arguing over who's better, cause I am.'
The brown headed man stuck his head in the door, said that, then stuck it back out.
Izzy and Ken looked at each other.
"That's Davis for you," Ken said weakly.
The next two to enter were Tai and Agumon.
"Kari has told me that you had redeemed yourself many times. I have seen for yourself that you are a person of good virtue."
"Tai, don't give me that crap. I was evil and it was because of Davis that I became good."
"You still are good."
"And everyone's forgiven you, even me!" Agumon said.
Ken looked at Agumon with dull eyes. "You.forgive .me?"
"Sure!"
A little sparkle shone in Ken's eyes as Tai and Agumon walked out.
TK and Patamon walked and flew into the room.
"Hey! I guess you don't look so good."
"I guess I don't."
"All I have to say is you're one of the best friends I ever had, and you're one of the kindest."
"That is because my crest is kindness."
"And mine is hope. So I hope to see you in the next life."
Patamon digivolved to Angemon and touched him with his Hand of Fate. Ken glowed and then dimmed. "My gift to you to help you."
The hospital people didn't let Cody in at first. Even though he was a full- grown adult and Ken's lawyer, he was still the shortest Digidestined. Eventually they let Cody and Armadillomon in.
"I have to apologize to you. I didn't like you at all when you were the Digimon Emperor, and I didn't treat you nicely when you became one of us. I never really trusted you until you sealed Daemon in the Dark Ocean, and even then only slightly."
"I don't blame you, Cody. If I was you, I wouldn't trust me either."
"There's one thing left. You never said in your will what would happen to your Wormmon. Do you want Yolei to decide?"
"No, I must ask someone about that, and I'll have him tell you what will become of him."
Kari and Gatomon next entered. Or rather, Kari and Angewomon, for Gatomon digivolved to Angewomon.
"Ken, I'm sorry that you have to die. I wish you didn't have to go so soon."
Angewomon performed a Heaven's Charm on Ken, protecting him from receiving an evil body in the next life.
Sora came in with Biyomon behind her.
She just simply said that she'd miss him. Biyomon said that she and Hawkmon would make a good eulogy for him.
Gomamon came alone. He said that Joe felt bad because he should have seen that Ken was not well. Ken told Gomamon to relay a message for him. He said, "Tell Joe that he shouldn't feel bad; most of us didn't see it either, only Yolei. Tell him I would miss him.'
Gomamon then said that he'd miss Ken and left the room.
Davis entered with Veemon.
Ken saw the sadness in Davis's eves, knowing that the only people sadder than him were his family. Davis saw the sadness in Ken's eyes and knew that Ken saw his sadness.
Ken's life force was nearly out and he told Davis to bring Yolei, Wormmon, and Hawkmon in.
He was nearly inaudible when he said, "Davis, promise me that you'll take care of Yolei and my children and their Digimon when I die." Davis nodded.
Ken touched Yolei's hand. "Yolei, I will always love you and cherish you."
"And I you, Ken."
Suddenly, Ken's body stiffened and everyone knew that Ken was dying right then and there. Yolei's glasses fogged up with tears. She took them off and wiped the tears off on her sleeve. She leaned down and kissed Ken. The last words to come out of Ken Ichijouji's mouth were, "Don't be alone the rest of your life."
Ken Ichijouji died on March 8, 2003.
The funeral was held two days later. Yolei remembered the last words Ken said.
Davis took his new role seriously. He took care of Yolei, her children, and the Digimon.
As time passed, Davis and Yolei fell in love with each other. Two years later, the two were married. In honor of Ken, Yolei kept both the names and became Yolei Ichijouji-Motomiya. Ken's final words were inscribed on the cake.
"Don't be alone the rest of your life."
