Digimon Fan Fiction ❯ Too many to count on ❯ Losing a member of the party ( Chapter 11 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
The Digidestinds were amazed the next day when they woke up, because they weren't attacked by some random evil Digimon.
Izzy suggested that they get off the beach at once, for Digimon would probably come and attack them if they stayed too long.
Tai told Yolei, Davis, and Cody to go fetch some water in the coconut shells, and bring some coconuts along, too, in the basket that used to hold the sodas. With little argument, they did.
As for Mimi, she woke up groggily with her hair tangled and undone. Her hat was beside her, and after she brushed her hair with her hand serving as a comb, she put the pink hat back on. She couldn't quite remember what happened the previous night, but later in the morning when her memory came back, she thought it was just a part of her dream. Why would Matt kiss me, anyway? And like that?
Matt ignored Mimi throughout their whole getting-ready trip. He and Sora went around waking everyone who wasn't awake.
The sun was directly overhead when they were all ready to leave.
“Okay, gang!” Tai exclaimed. “Let's --“
A hysterical childish laugh interrupted him.
Tai looked over at the kids that he sent to get water, and noticed that they were playing in the water, splashing the others, jumping and seeing how big a splash they made, they looked like they were having so much fun…
This was not greatly appreciated by Tai.
With a huge vein popping out of his head, he screamed, “GET OVER HERE, YOU DOOFUSES!”
A squeak was barely concealed as Davis and Yolei quickly got out of the water, scurrying over to the rest of the group.
Tai looked back, and saw a small figure still in the water. “CODY, GET YOUR BUTT OVER HERE!”
“Sheesh, you don't have to be so mean, Tai.” Sora said, sticking her finger in her ear.
Tai ignored her and squinted over at the shore. Cody was still in the water, but he seemed like he was struggling to get out. Suddenly, he tripped and landing head-first into the sand. “Help!” he squeaked, raising a hand to try and get their attention. “Help!”
As soon as he realized something was wrong, Matt rushed over to Cody, trying to pull him out of the water. The Ishida tried with all his might to get Cody out of the water, but Cody wouldn't budge. It's not like Cody wasn't trying, though. Oh, no. Cody was trying desperately to get out of the water, but the water was just too strong. Tears started brimming his eyes as Cody wailed for help, begging for Matt to pull him out, screaming for his mother. Tai rushed over as well, and pulled on Cody's left arm as Matt pulled on Cody's right.
“Wow, he just won't budge, won't he?” Tai said through gritted teeth of struggling.
“Tai, Matt, don't let go! Please… please… help me…!”
“Don't worry, Cody. We'll get you out of there.” Matt reassured gently. He sure had a way with kids.
“Man, what is pulling him?” Tai said, tilting his head backwards on the edge of his neck, pulling with all his might.
Cody started wheezing, his strength fading. His grip loosened from Matt and Tai's hands because he was so tired from screaming. He began to flutter his eyelids shut. Matt, noticing this, shouted “No, Cody! Don't let go… please… c'mon, Cody, you can do it…!”
But Cody was soon exhausted, and smiled at Matt and Tai gratefully. “Matt…Tai… thank you so much, but… I… I can't hold on any longer…”
“No!” Tai shouted. “No, Cody, don't you dare say that! We can get you out of there! You can get yourself out of there! Just believe…! Oh, come on Cody! Don't leave us!”
Cody sighed heavily, and then as he looked up at the two boys, he smiled, a tear rolling down his sorry cheek.
After that it all happened so fast. Cody let go, and was pulled into the water. The waves whooshed around, as if not even knowing it swallowed a Digidestined, but more importantly, a friend. Matt and Tai continued to stare at the spot Cody was in, an uncomfortable silence greeting the two.
After a couple of minutes, Matt gritted his teeth and kneeled on the sand, slamming his fist against the stardust. “No! I can't believe we lost another one!”
Tai looked down at Matt sadly. “C'mon, Matt. Let's just head back and tell the others.”
Matt snapped his head up at Tai, and Tai noticed that he was crying. Matt stood up and looked Tai straight in the eye, as if he were going to jump him.
“How can you be so calm? Cody died, Tai. HE DIED!”
Tai jumped back at the sudden outburst, but remained calm. “Look, Matt. There's nothing we can do about it. It's done. It's over.”
Matt glared at the brunette, knowing that he was right.
“C'mon,” Tai started, motioning for them to go back. “Let's tell the others and get it over with.”
Solemnly, Matt followed his best friend, guilt running over him.
When Tai told the others what happened, Sora was the first to react. She had both hands on her face, her eyes peeking through the fingers. But she remained silent.
Izzy, Mimi, and Willis all looked at Matt and Tai for a moment, stunned. They didn't say much, but looked troubled and as if they didn't know what to do.
“Wow.” Mimi whispered, but in a pained way. Her voice cracked under so much pressure.
“I can't believe it.” Izzy said softly, biting his lip to stop him from crying.
“Man, I didn't even know the guy,” Willis whispered. “And now he's gone.”
Kari, T.K, Davis, and Yolei were all packed in a small group. They were all crying, since they knew Cody more than anyone else.
Matt gritted his teeth. His fists started shaking, and suddenly he screamed. “Argh! Why does everything happen at a beach! They've taken three of our friends. How much more do they want us to suffer?”
Matt sighed harshly. “I'm sick and tired of this Digimon quest…”
Tai looked at Matt sadly. “Matt, don't worry. When we save Willis, we'll be done here. And we'll go home… most likely.”
Matt scowled at the `most likely' part. He nodded forward and said, “Let's go. The faster we finish this quest, the faster we get out of this place.”
And with that, Captain Yamato marched forward, leaving his crew bewildered for a moment before they followed.

Yeah, ignore the last part. I just wanted to put something on pirates or something in there. Well, see you guys later!
Disclaimer: Nope, don't own anything. Not even Willis.
