Chapter 2-Contagious
A tall, brown-haired teenager kicked a soccer ball around an otherwise empty field, keeping up a running commentary all the while.
"And it's Kamiya with the ball yet again, seems like he's had the whole game. Oh, but not for long, looks like Tim Johnson has his eyes on the ball, they say
there hasn't been a player yet who's been able to keep the ball from him. Oh! Until now," Tai crowed to himself, dodging an imaginary player. "Kamiya breezed right
past him and now he's heading for the goal. He stops the ball expertly with his foot then moves it back for the kick, fabulous form by the way, slams the ball
straight for the goal and its.....not good." Tai watched as the ball bounced off the side of the goal and to the side, heading straight for-.
"Agumon, heads up!"
"Huh-Ahhh!" THUMP. "Ow."
"Agumon!" Tai ran over to his fallen partner. "Are you okay?"
"Don't take me out coach." the orange, dinosaur-like digimon said in a dazed voice.
"Uh, okay." Tai sweatdropped.
"Owww." Agumon groaned, rubbing his head. "What hit me?"
"Uhhh..." Tai glanced over at the ball, which now lay underneath the deserted stands. "Let's just say I need to work on my power kick a little more. So did you get the nachos?" he asked, quickly changing the subject.
"Huh? Oh, yeah they're right-hey where'd they go!" Agumon searched frantically around the field before spotting the small cardboard box he'd been
holding lying face down a few yards away. "Never mind." Tai sighed.
"Well, there goes three dollars down the drain."
"Sorry Tai." Agumon apologized. Tai grinned and helped Agumon to his feet.
"That's okay, my mom's probably almost done with dinner anyway." he reassured him. Agumon stared at Tai in confusion.
"I thought that was why you wanted the nachos?"
"Well...yeah but, I think I can last one night." Tai paused. "I think." He shook his head. "Come on, let's go home."
"Right." The two started to head home when Tai suddenly stopped.
"Wait!" he cried, running back over to stands. "I almost forgot my soccer ball." He bent over, but stood up again looking confused. "Hey where'd it go?"
"Looking for this?" said a voice from behind them.
"AH!" Tai shouted, jumping nearly two feet in the air. "Oh, it's just you." he said, relieved. Agumon ran up beside him, glancing at the visitor with a strange look on his face. "Don't sneak up on us like that."
"Sorry." Izzy replied. "This yours?" he asked, holding out a soccer ball.
"Yeah! Where'd you find it?"
"Under the stands. Want it back?" he asked.
"Well, yeah. Why else would I be looking for it?" Tai replied.
Izzy just smiled. "Here you go." Izzy said. He drop-kicked the ball and watched as it zoomed past Tai and Agumon, narrowly missing Tai's head, still with that strange smile. Tai and Agumon watched open-mouthed as the ball cleared the soccer goal and continued on, still gaining altitude and showing no sign of stopping soon. Tai was the first to turn back to Izzy.
"Um, Izzy? How did you do that?" Tai asked a little shakily.
"Do what?" Izzy asked innocently.
"What do you mean 'do what'? Do that! That thing where you kicked the soccer ball, my soccer ball, into orbit! How did you do that!?" Tai exclaimed, pointing upwards. Izzy looked up, then looked back at Tai.
"Do you want to learn how do it?" he asked simply. Tai seemed startled by this question.
"Uh, sure. I'd love to learn how do that. Certainly help my power kick, that's for sure." he replied, the last comment muttered to himself. "But first I want to know where you learned to do that. No offense Izzy, but you've never been the athletic type."
"Be careful Tai." Agumon warned before Izzy could answer. He moved in front of Tai protectively. "There's something strange about Izzy."
"Strange? What do you mean?"
"He probably means this." Izzy replied before Agumon. He lifted a hand and fired a blast of purple lightning at Tai's chest. Tai flew backwards into the stands, reducing the spot where he landed to splinters.
"Tai!" Agumon shouted. Whatever he'd been expecting this wasn't it. "Tai! Are you okay?" he called. Tai didn't answer. Izzy started towards him but was stopped by Agumon. "Don't come any closer." he warned, torn between his desire to check on Tai and his duty to protect Tai from...whatever this Izzy-imposter was.
Izzy stared at Agumon. "Oh please." he said with a snort. He stepped over Agumon and continued towards Tai but a cry of 'Pepper Breath!' knocked him flat. Izzy got up, not hurt at all by Agumon's attack, and turned toward the Digimon angrily. He lifted his hand, which began to glow purple again, but before he could do anything a bright orange light burst from Tai in the shape of a sun. Izzy spun around. His smiled that frightening smile again. "The crest of Courage." he whispered, not noticing another glow behind him. So he was caught completly off guard by MetalGreymon's attack.
"Giga Destroyer!" MetalGreymon's cried, shooting two large missiles from his chest plate. One of the missiles missed and continued on to blow a large hole in the soccer field while the other hit it's target. Izzy flew about twenty feet, where he stayed. MetalGreymon raced over to Tai, dedigivolving back to Agumon. "Tai! Tai! Are you okay?Ta-huh?" Agumon had been expecting Tai to be unconscious. He had been expecting Tai to be hurt or worse. He had not been expecting to seem standing, seemingly fine, and staring at his hands.
"Tai, you're....okay. How did you-?" Agumon cut himself off when Tai held up a hand in front of him. The Digidestined moved his hand to the side so that the palm was now facing Agumon.
"That wasn't very nice. Hurting my friend like that." Tai said, not even looking at Agumon.
His hand glowed orange.

A blue-haired college student looked up from his studies when he heard a knock at the door. "Coming!" Joe called. He stood up carefully so as not to disturb the pile of papers and books on his desk. Walking past Gomamon, who was asleep on Joe's bed, he opened the door to his dorm room. "Tai? What are you doing here?" Joe asked, immediately recognizing the shadowed figure in the doorway. No one could mistake that hair. Tai didn't answer, just walked inside. Joe gasped when saw that he carried an unconcsious Izzy on his back. "What happened?" he asked, helping Tai place Izzy on the couch.
"I don't know." Tai replied. "I found him like this in the park. I brought him here since you're closer than the hospital, and probably cheaper. Besides, I figured you'd take care of him better since your a friend."
"Well, I'm flattered Tai, but I'm really not qualified to have a patient yet." Joe said, checking Izzy's pulse. He didn't notice Tai reaching out a hand towards his neck, nor did he notice when Tai suddenly stiffened and looked to the right. "Where are Agumon and Tentomon?" Joe suddenly asked, finally realizing that the two Digimon were missing.
"Huh?" Tai quickly turned his attention back to Joe. "Oh, they went to tell Izzy's parents."
"Both of them? That's kind of strange. I expect Tentomon to be glued to Izzy's side at a time like this."
"Yeah, well they both volunteered so I let them both go." Tai said, sounding a bit impatient. "Which reminds me, I need to go."
"The bathroom's the blue door." Joe replied absently, now searching through his first aid kit. "We're out of toilet paper though, so I suggest you wait for my roommate to get back from the store."
"What? No, that's not what I meant. I mean I have to go as in leave."
"Now?" Joe objected. "What about Izzy?"
"I'm sure he'll be fine." Tai said, definately sounding impatient now. He moved to the door. "Bye!" he called, racing out.
"Wait!" Joe shouted, but he was already out the door. Joe stared at the door, confused. "It's not like Tai to just bail out on a friend like this." he thought aloud. "I hope everything's okay." His musing were interrupted by a stir from Izzy. He spun around and was shocked to see the crest of Knowledge glowing on Izzy's chest. "What? But, how?" Izzy lifted his hand so that the palm faced Joe, but his eyes remained closed.
Gomamon finally started to awaken, but it was too late.
Izzy's hand shone purple.

Matt carefully drove his father's brand new, bright red convertible through traffic. His father had saved for years to buy this car and it had taken a lot of convincing (and a month of chores without allowance) to get Mr. Ishida to let his son borrow it. But it was worth it. Matt glanced over to the passenger seat where his date, Sora Takenouchi, sat. They'd had a great time and Matt was convinced it was all because of the car.
He took a quick look at the rearview mirror and managed to get a glimpse of Gabumon and Biyomon in the backseat. Matt grimaced. He loved his partner like a brother but really, who wants their brother to come along on a date? Gabumon would have stayed home that night, but Matt's father was working late and after that incident with the blender Gabumon wasn't allowed to stay home alone. So he'd been forced to bring him along and, so he didn't get lonely, Sora brought Biyomon also. They'd still had a good time but Matt just couldn't stop thinking about the things they'd been unable to do with their digimon around. Like, for example, making out. And also...well, actually making out was about it. Sora's mom had told him repeatedly and graphically what would happen if he went any farther.
Matt took a second to glance into the mirror again when Sora suddenly screamed a warning. He slammed on the brakes, causing everyone in the car to lurch forward, and looked up to see what had caused Sora's sudden cry. To his surprise he saw figure standing in the middle of the road, but what surprised him even more was that he recognized the figure.
"Tai?" he said incredulously. "What the heck is he doing?" he asked no one in particular.
"I don't know." Sora replied, just as confused. Biyomon and Gabumon peeked over their partners seats. They all watched as Tai held up a hand so that the palm was facing them. He brought up his other hand parrellel to the first.
"Wha-" Matt cut himself off and watched with the other shocked passengers as both hands started to give off a bright orange light. A spark appeared in front of Tai's hands and grew, slowly at first, then faster, into a huge ball of fire. The other cars on the bridge either stopped so their drivers could stare, or raced on as the smarter drivers got as far as possible from what was about to happen. "Get out of the car." Matt whispered.
"Get out of the car!" he shouted when no one moved. Grabbing Sora's arm he leapt over the driver side door onto the pavement. In the backseat Gabumon and Biyomon did the same, only out the other side. Matt ran as fast as could until Tai released the fireball. Matt pushed Sora down just as it reached the car, where it exploded in a firey mass of hot metal and burning leather. As Matt stared at the remains of his father's dream car one ridiculous thought kept running through his head. /My Dad's gonna kill me./
"Tai." Sora whispered, snapping Matt out of his stupor. She leapt up and ran towards the figure walking past the former convertible, stopping a few steps in front of him. Tai also stopped and stared at her, a strange and disturbing smile on his face. "Tai I...I don't understand." she said helplessly.
"Sora wait!" Matt shouted, running up to them. "Sora, that's not Tai."
"Wrong." Tai said. "I am Tai, or at least I am now." Matt turned to him.
"What that's supposed to mean?" he demanded. Gabumon and Biyomon finally reached their partners and stood in front of them protectivly.
"It means exactly what it sounds like. I am now Tai Kamiya and soon I'll also be Sora Takenouchi and Matt Ishida." Tai leapt forward before anyone could react and grabbed the two Digidestined arms. Then he let them go.
"What was that?" Matt asked, now completly confused. Tai just smiled. Before Matt could ask again a jolt of pain raced through his body. He fell to his knees and beside him so did Sora.
"Matt!"
"Sora!" The two digimon cried their partner's names and turned to help them. But there wasn't anything that they could do. The crests of Love and Friendship blazed brightly, almost mockingly. Joe walked up beside Tai. He stared at the two Digidestined on the ground and smiled.
