Chapter 4
Good and Evil
Jessie was all smiles as she strolled into school. She felt happy, and this was a rarity for her. Her smile was usually turned upside down at the very thought of school, especially because of the people in it. However, her night had proven to be a good one. James had called her and they stayed up late talking. She'd let out her anger and frustration regarding Cassidy's confrontation with her the day before, and he seemed to completely understand everything she was saying. He made her feel so much better. And in addition, she had made an agreement with him to swap thoughts about year 12 that day. Jessie's smile broadened as she saw James walking towards her. He didn't smile that much, she noticed, but he was still gorgeous. She felt herself blush at the thought, before shaking it off.
"Hey James."
"Hi Jess, how are you?"
"Actually, I'm pretty good. And you?"
"I'm fine", he said, but his eyes seemed to become distant. Jessie peered at him, but just as the moment seemed to have come, it went, and his eyes went back to their usual serious yet childlike state.
"So did you write your worries down?" Jessie asked him as they walked towards the fountain that sat in the centre of the school's front yard, and sat on its edge.
"Yes, I did", he stated simply, reaching into his pocket.
Jessie watched as he seemed to clutch the piece of folded white paper, staring at it so seriously that she thought he'd put a hole in it.
"James?" Jessie asked, and he looked up, his eyes once again returning to their normal state.
"Uh…yes?"
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, yes."
"Okay…" Jessie peered at him curiously, before taking her own note out of her pocket. She held it out to him, as he held his out to hers, though he was hesitant. It seemed as if it were just the two of them in the world at that moment, as their eyes locked in understanding and trust. They nodded, signaling that they trusted each other with their deepest thoughts and emotions. James was still hesitant as he handed over his note.
Jessie noticed this and smiled. "I promise."
James smiled back softly. "I promise."
The loud bell echoed across the school grounds at that moment, causing Jessie and James to realise that they had to go to class.
"Meet you at recess?" Jessie turned back to him and asked, as they were walking away.
"Same time, same place", James replied.

"Hi Misty!" Ash called out as the orange-haired girl strolled past him, acting as if there were nobody there. She did not reply. Again, Ash called out to her, and this time she stopped, but did not turn around.
"Hi", she said coldly and just loud enough for him to hear, before continuing to walk in the direction she was going.
"Misty…" Ash called out, however she did not turn back.
Destinee, who was standing next to Ash, sighed. "What are we going to do, Ash? If something bad is happening, she's going to need support…"
Ash closed his eyes in concern. "I know…"

"Hey, Raye!" Gary called out as he saw Raye walking into a classroom.
Raye stopped walking and rolled her eyes quickly before turning around.
"Hi Gary…' she said.
Moving closer to her, he smiled charmingly. "So how are you?"
"I'm…fine…" she said slowly, unsure of how to react. "You?"
"Oh, well…I'm great because I've seen the most beautiful girl in the world."
Raye smirked. 'I knew I couldn't trust him. He's a total player.' "Oh, and who might that be?"
"You", he stated simply, and turned to walk away.
A look of shock had entered Raye's face and she felt her cheeks burning as she thanked her lucky stars that he'd turned around and couldn't see her blushing. Before she could think of a reply, he was walking away.
"Have a nice day, gorgeous", he said as he walked down the corridor.

Jessibelle sneered as she put her pen down. Giving what she had written to Butch, she laid back in her chair and smiled.
"This is so fun!" she said.
Both Butch and herself were in study hall, completing the phases of Jessibelle's plan to completely upset Misty.
Upon hearing Butch laugh, she turned her head.
"This is great, Belle. The handwriting's even totally different from yours", he commented, shaking his head and laughing slightly.
"You think so?"
"Definitely", Butch laughed. "Definitely."

Destinee smiled as she sat down next to Trowa, however he did not seem to notice her. She glanced over at him, noticing that he was staring at his book in front of him with glazed eyes, as if he were lost in a world of his own. He also seemed to be cradling his left arm.
"Trowa? Are you okay?" Destinee asked, becoming a little concerned.
Suddenly, Trowa snapped out of his state and looked around frantically, as if he'd awoken from a nightmare, and attracting the attention of the other members of the class.
"Trowa…?" Destinee said worriedly.
Calming down, he finally noticed that she was sitting at the desk next to him, looking at him with her large brown eyes full of worry and concern.
"Are you okay?" she asked, a concerned tone in her voice. She went to put her hand on his arm, something Destinee always did out of her natural instinct to calm others. However Trowa flinched, edging backwards in his chair.
"What's wrong…?" Destinee asked, even more worried.
Closing his eyes for a moment, Trowa shook his head. "I'm fine, just a little shook up from a bad dream I had last night."
Destinee's eyes searched his for proof that what he was saying was the truth, but his eyes seemed emotionless.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Destinee asked seriously.
Trowa shook his head. "No", he replied. "I'm fine, really."
As his gaze returned to the desk, Destinee peered at him. 'He looked so afraid before… I'm worried… What if something bad happened to him…?'
"Is your arm okay?" she asked quietly.
Trowa looked up hastily. "My arm? My arm is fine", he said, almost snapping his answer at her.
Looking a little shocked, Destinee nodded slowly. "Okay then… I hope so…"
Trowa looked into her eyes for a moment, then turned his head back towards his desk.
Before Destinee could contemplate what had just gone on, Serena plopped her bag down at the desk next to her. "Hey Dest."
"Oh, hey Serena", Destinee answered.

It seemed as if first period had flown by to Jessie, but she figured it was because she was looking so forward to seeing James at recess. She found him sitting in the same spot as yesterday, and smiled when she saw him.
"Hey, James!" she called out, waving at him. He smiled at her as she made her way over and sat down across from him at the table.
"How was class?" he asked.
"Completely boring", Jessie said, waving it off.
James laughed. "Same as mine."
The two smiled at each other for a few moments, before blushing and looking away again.
"James…" Jessie asked a few moments later, hoping the redness streaked across her cheeks had subsided.
"Yeah?" he asked.
"Are you…going to the dance?"
James paused. "I don't know… I haven't really thought about it."
"Oh…" Jessie looked down, disappointed.
"How come?" James asked.
"Well I…" Jessie trailed off.
James looked at her, his eyes asking for an answer.
"I was wondering…if you would like to go…with me…" she said slowly, hesitating as she said each word. She looked down, and didn't notice the soft smile that played upon James' face after she said the words. He was hoping that she would ask.
"I'd love to", he said.
Jessie looked up, half in shock and half in happiness.
"Really?!" she asked excitedly.
James smiled. "Really."

The bell that signaled the end of their break sounded as Ash and his group of friends were in a deep conversation about the Idol competition.
Gary groaned. "Oh man! Now I have to go to Physics! How boring!"
"You chose to do it, dude", Duo laughed, patting Gary over the back.
The group disembarked and everybody went their separate ways.
"I wonder where Misty is… I haven't seen her since this morning", Destinee said to Ash.
"Me neither", Ash replied worriedly. "I've got study hall now and she should too, so I might go and look for her."
"Okay Ash, good luck."
Ash nodded. "Thanks. See you at lunchtime."
Destinee smiled "Sure!" she said, before making her way to her next classroom.

An evil smirk crossed Jessibelle's face as she looked carefully around the corridor.
"Good. Nobody's around", she said.
Taking a piece of paper out of her bag, she peered at each locker carefully, looking closely at the number on the top.
"Here it is…" she said quietly, smirking. She quickly took another glance around the corridor. Seeing nobody, she proceeded to wedge the piece of paper through the gap in the locker door. When she had done it, she disappeared as quickly as she had appeared, walking back down the corridor casually, snickering on the way.

Ash sighed. He had been looking for Misty for about half an hour, and had checked pretty much every place she could be, save for the ladies bathroom. However, he wasn't about to go in there. He sat down on a bench nearby, thinking over all the places he had checked.
'She has to be somewhere else… But where…?' he pondered.
Suddenly, he thought of an idea. "I know!"
Picking himself up from the bench, he ran towards the school garden. It was a beautiful array of plants and flowers, both something to admire and something that students used in subjects like Biology. Ash glanced around the garden, and sure enough, saw an orange-haired girl sitting in the corner, bunched up and crying. Ash's face fell. 'Poor Misty…'
Slowly, he walked forward. He didn't want to frighten her or catch her off-guard.
"Misty…?" he said softly as he leaned down next to her.
Misty's head whipped up. She stared at Ash in surprise for a few moments, before throwing herself into his arms.
Caught off-guard and unexpectedly, Ash didn't know what to do. One minute she was biting his head off and the next she was hugging him. He could feel her shaking and sobbing in his arms, and slowly put his arms around her and hugged her tightly. Neither of them said a thing as she cried almost hysterically in his arms.
"It's going to be okay, Misty… Why don't you tell me what's wrong…" Ash said a minute later.
Suddenly, Misty's head snapped up. She appeared as if she'd just awoken from a dream, a shocked look present on her face. Ash, too, became shocked as Misty forced her way out of her arms. She looked into his eyes angrily, vigorously wiping tears from her own eyes.
"How dare you!" she screamed at him, before turning and running out of the garden.
Ash stared after her. "What on Earth…?" he mumbled, a bewildered look on his face.
To be continued…
Love and light,
Serenity.
