Chapter 8

Where Did I Put My Fly-Swatter?

They walked along down the path in single file. During the day, the forest was dim, the nights were far worse because it was pitch black. They were extremely careful with their provisions, but after about a week they began to get low on food. Soon they came to a black river.

"What kind of river is this? The water is all black." Vikki asked.

"It looks scary!" Hope whimperd as she hid behind Mirai's leg.

"It is evil that's for sure. I wouldn't chance wading or swimming." Zamba said.

"If we tie and piece of rope to the end of one of my arrows, I could try to hit that boat on the opposite shore. Then we could pill it over here." Legolas said.

"What boat?! I don't see anything!" Vikki protested.

"I do!" Zamba said. "Great idea, Legolas, we'll try it!"

Legolas tied a rope to the end of an arrow and took aim. He fired, everyone heard it hit the boat. Mirai tugged the line a little.

"It's secure!" Mirai exclaimed as he began to pull the boat over.

Once the boat was on their side of the river, everyone got in except Ashley.

"I'm not riding in that rickety old boat! I might fall out and get my hair messed up! Not to mention my outfit!" Ashley whined.

"Yes you are or you'll get left behind! Now get in!" Zamba said.

Ashley reluctantly stepped into the boat, but as she did so it began to push away from the shore. She ended up falling in the water. Legolas reached down and pulled her up into the boat. She had fallen asleep.

"Seems the water puts you into an enchanted sleep." Mirai concluded.

"Then I think we had better get to the other bank before someone else falls in!" Vikki said.

They reached the shore and got out of the boat. Legolas and Mirai shared the burden of Ashley, who slept on.

The Next Day

The group had stopped to take a break, Ashley slept under a tree with a goofy grin on her face. Zamba scowled at her.

"At least somebody here is happy, I'm about to starve!" She groaned.

"Will this forest ever end?!" Vikki cried.

"Why dosen't somebody climb up a tree and have a look around?" Mirai proposed.

"Great idea, and thank you for volunteering dear!" Zamba said.

"Me and my big mouth" Mirai mumbled as he began to float up to the top of the tree everyone sat under.

When Mirai reached the top of the tree he gazed out at the blue sky. It had been awhile since he had felt the sun and wind on his face. For a minute he just stayed there with his eyes closed, basking in the warmth.

"MIRAI!!" Zamba screamed.

"Ack!" Mirai screamed, nearly loosing balance and falling.

"Mirai! Are you ever going to get around to telling us where the edge of the forest is?!" Zamba fussed.

"I don't see the edge, all I see is the green tree-tops!" Mirai concluded.

Everyone down below on the ground sighed. Mirai floated down to them. They all stood there depressed when suddenly Ashley sat up, awake. She seemed to have forgotten what had happened since they left Elrond's.

"Why did I wake up!?" She sobbed. "I was having such a lovely dream. I was a shopping spree at the mall...."

"Ashley....just stop talking....right now...." Zamba mumbled.

They all loaded up there gear and started walking. Everyone was starving and in foul moods. Soon they saw lights through the trees and heard the sounds of a feast. The groups stomach's got the better of them and they ventured off the path and creeped towards the lights. They all peeked around the trunks and saw elves feasting in a clearing. The sight and smell of food was to much for them. Suddenly, Mirai ran into the clearing, wanting to sink his teeth into the food. Suddenly everything went black. The groups back at the edge of the clearing ran out in search of Mirai.

"Mirai-Trunks Briefs! Saiyan! You dratted Saiyan! Oie! Saiyan! Confound you, where are you?!" Zamba screamed.

They were all walking around in the dark until hope stumbled upon Mirai, literally!

"Daddy?" Hope asked.

"I was having such a wonderful dream," said a drowsy Mirai, "I was at an all you can eat buffet."

"Shaddup about food, Mirai!" Vikki screamed.

The groups started wondering back to the path, when Legolas saw the lights again. The group started to run for the lights. Mirai tripped on a tree root and fell, the others ran straight on into the clearing. The forest went black again as soon as they entered the clearing. Mirai sat up and called everyone's name, Zamba's repeatedly. Mirai, depressed at the loss of his family and friends, sat down under a tree to think about the problem he was in. He ended up dozing off.

Only when he woke up did he realize that he was being bound by a giant spider. He started struggling to get free, then he remembered his sword. With the hand that he had managed to free, he drew his sword and slashed the spider back. He then started to cut the spider webs that bound him. The spider came back to attack again, Mirai stabbed down on it's back. The spider rolled over, dead. Mirai wiped the sword off on the grass and sheathes it in it's case on his back. He then explored the area with the knowledge of giant spiders on the loose and his friends and family still missing. He crept to a clearing in which dozens of giant spiders hung around a group of bundles. He could tell his friends were in those bundles. Slowly he devised an idea in his head: stir up the spiders and save his friends. He took his ring from his pocket and slipped it on. Then he chanted:

Lazy Lob and Crazy Cob

are weaving webs to wind me,

I am far more sweet than other meat,

but still they cannot find me.

Moving from place to place and re-chanting the verse got the spiders all confused. Soon he had them a good distance from the bundles. He quickly ran back to them, slipped of his ring, and cut everyone loose. They all fell into a patch of clover under the tree they were hanging from. Everyone jumped up to run away but the spiders returned. Everyone took weapons; Legolas with his arrows, Zamba and Hope with their claws, Vikki and Mirai with their swords, and Ashley with her pom-poms. The fight began. Soon everyone was getting tired and the spiders were closing in. Mirai made a decision.

"I'm going to disappear!" Mirai said. "Don't worry. I'm going to try to to get them away so you all can escape! Stay together! I'll see you soon!"

With that, Mirai slipped on his ring and disappeared from sight. Everyone gasped in shaock. But then, behind the spiders, they heard Mirai's voice taunting the them. All the spiders ran off to find the voice. The others from the group ran away, hoping Mirai wouldn't be caought. As they paused under a tree, a couple giant spiders jumped down and attacked. Mirai reappeared from the side and fought them with his sword.

"I've got them! Go on! Run!" Mirai shouted.

Hesitant at first, they turned and left Mirai with the spiders again. They ran into a clearing, one that the elves had used for feasting the night before. Here they sat to rest and wait for Mirai. He returned within a few minutes. Vikki and Ashley both hugged him, Legolas slapped him on the shoulder, Hope ran up and leaped into his arms, and Zamba walked forward last and kissed him. Everyone began asking him questions. Mirai explained everything, even his secret treasure, the ring. Soon they all dozed of the into a sleep. Suddenly Vikki opened her eyes and jumped up.

"Where's Zamba?!" She asked.

Everyone jumped up and looked around. Zamba was indeed missing. It seemed she disappeared in all the chatter. But since everyone was nearly dead from being so tired. They all fell into an uneasy sleep.

Two wood-elf guards dragged a tightly bound Zamba down a hallway made of stone. They where unkindly to the Ctarl-Ctarl race so they didn't drag her very gently. They threw her before the Elf-King. He eyed her sternly as she sat up.

"Why did you and your friends attack my people while they were feasting in the forest?" The king asked.

"We didn't attack them, we were only hoping for a small take-out cause we were hundry." Zamba replied.

"Where are your friends, now?," questioned the king.

"The forest, somewhere," replied Zamba.

"What is your reason for being in the forest." The king asked.

"I ain't saying," snapped Zamba.

"Take her to the dungeon until she is ready to speak and be more nicer with her tone!" The king shouted.

The guards returned and drag Zamba to the dungeons. They tossed her into a cell. She sat in the dark alone and wondering about her family friends.
