Chapter Three - Rebirth
< L 1 Colony - Resistance Base >
< Serena’s point of view >
I don’t know what exactly posed me to come back among the living, to this day I still wonder. I groaned hoarsely coming around. My eyes still refused to open and at my first attempt I discovered that I would instantly regret it. The pure light of wherever I was blinded me.
I must tell you, despite what others may say, that I’m a very stubborn person. Stubborn, and very hard to break down. I was always stubborn, that is a fact people may actually agree with, but I used to be the type to break down and cry when things got even a little rough. It wasn’t until I fought Galaxia that I became completely and utterly hollow. Nothing could break me down even though I kept this unnervingly convincing façade that I was still innocent, pure, and untouched. That I could still be the full of light Serena, I was as a teenager, back when there really was something in life to look forward to. You don’t come out of seeing all your friends die before your eyes unscathed. That was impossible. I had cried till there were just no more tears to shed. That is until now. I had watched them all die all over again.
My instincts told me to ignore all rational thought as I opened my eyes, blindly hoping that I’d find myself in my warm bed with my husband not inches away from me, asleep. Apparently that was not the case. All I saw at first was white. White everything. Walls, curtains, sheets. Everything was white. I scrambled to sitting position looking wildly about this unfamiliar room. I ignored the sudden jolt of pain at my side. It had no comparison to what I felt emotionally.
There were people in the room, several, okay maybe three. I must have been hooked up to some sort of E.K.G monitor because its erratic beeping brought the three people’s attention to me. I yelled out the words ‘ Where the hell am ‘ when I realized there was no voice. I couldn’t speak. They only came as a mouthed desperate simper.
My hand immediately flew to my mouth and I completely freaked. I was being forced back into a reality I didn’t want to face. I refused to face it. Worried expressions crossed these strangers and one of them called for a sedative. I didn’t care. If I had my voice I would have been screaming. Two of the figures approached me. One, being the only other woman in the room. She held a syringe in her hand with a strangely familiar blue liquid and I stared wide eyed at it. I fought them but I guess that had been anticipated because another held me in his arms. I was surprised that he wasn’t holding me down but quite the contrary. He tried to soothe me, whispering for me to calm down, that everything was alright. I fought him too. Just who the hell did he think he was?
Everything was NOT alright !
His grip tightened a little as I felt the syringe pierce the skin of my arm. It was then I looked into his blue eyes accusingly. I hated him! Why the hell was he holding me and letting that god awful woman inject me. Yes, at this point I think I hated the world. I had not one rational thought running through me. Everything was starting to look hazy but those eyes …those cobalt blue eyes. I felt like I was staring into Endymion’s eyes. A peaceful smile crossed my lips with that thought. For a split second I thought I was at bliss. Maybe it was the god damned sedative that was kicking in I’ll never know that either. I suddenly had the urge to cry for all I was worth. I buried myself into this strangers chest and started to cry, whimpering slightly. That’s all I remember, It was dark and so very cold after that.
Days later …
I don’t know how long I had been asleep. I suppose it felt good to be dead to the world even if it was for a little while. I woke up with a soft groan opening my eyes to find the light in the room dimmer. I was grateful to find the curtains drawn keeping most of the sunlight out. The first thing that hit me after that was the fact I could barely feel my left hand. Glancing over I discovered why. Asleep at my bedside was one of the people that I had seen the first time I woke up.
He had pulled up a chair and stayed watching me. My hand was obviously in his and he had fallen asleep using my hand and part of the bed as support. Despite myself I smiled, reaching over brushing a few stray strands of his chestnut brown hair out of his face. The light touch was enough to awaken him and I was once again staring into intense cobalt blue eyes. He blinked owlishly at me at first. I guess he was surprised to find me awake.
“Hey,” he greeted.
He gave me a sheepish grin and I smiled back.
“I’m going to get the doctor to check on you. Alright? I won’t be gone long.” he told me as he began to get up.
I grabbed his hand and shook my head.
I wanted to ask for my girls but I knew all too well I couldn’t speak.
He looked back to me questioningly. I frowned and motioned for something to write with pretending to write on the palm of my hand. He understood and quickly rummaged for pad and a pen. Taking them in hand I scrawled my message to him.
Where are my girls? Could I please see them.
I handed back the pad of paper for him to read.
He smiled and nodded.
“I’ll be right back,” he assured me and disappeared from the room.
I sighed falling back into the bed and wondering just what was going to happen next. I had no idea where I was nor who any of these people are. Looking around, I noticed I was still hooked up to several monitors and upon more inspection I found I was only wearing under garments and bandages. There was one across my abdomen and another around my right arm. I grimaced finally starting to feel some of the pain.
Just then he returned to the room with another woman and my girls. I reached out for Reeni and she was handed to me. Tears were already beginning to fall down my cheeks as I hugged her close. I had been so afraid that we had been separated when I didn’t see them that it was an extreme relief to finally have them both in my arms. Reeni immediately buried herself into my arms and I was only too happy to hold her. I wiped the rogue tears away and promised myself those would be the last. If the fates wished to condemned me I would not give them the satisfaction of breaking under their whim. I would be soul-less if need be. The masks I held in place all of my life would fall today.
I sat contently with the girls in my arms for a while until a doctor came in. I regretfully let the girls be taken out of my arms as the doctor started checking me over. I was starting to feel uncomfortable with all the scrutiny, but the doctor continued with his work quietly and efficiently. When he finished I was surprised to see him remove the monitor and I.V
"You seem to be doing much better than I thought." he informed me as he bandaged my arm where the I.V had been.
I nodded and he turned to speak with his nurse assistant.
"I think we can start her treatment now. She's been on I.V long enough to start on solid foods but for today lets keep it slow, really light foods. Start her on the medication and lets see how she does." he explained.
The nurse nodded.
"I'm going to bring her some food." she said excusing herself.
She left the room and the doctor picked up the small notebook pad I had been given to write on. He flipped the first page over and handed it to me with a pen.
"I'm Dr. Littrel," he explained, "My assistant and I have been treating you and the girls for several weeks now. You are on a base in the L1 colony."
He turned and motioned to the man whom had been with me when I woke up to come over.
The man walked over and reclaimed his chair at my bedside.
"This is Duo Maxwell, one of the young men who brought you in." Dr. Littrel introduced.
I gave them a weak smile and a nod in understanding.
"If you don't mind young lady," he continued, "I would like to ask you a few questions."
I nodded again urging him to continue.
"I think first and for most we are very interesting in knowing who you and the children are." he said.
I picked up the pen and began to write up my reply.
My name is Serenity Tsukino.
The girls are my daughters, Reeni and Diana.
I showed him the note and he gave me a curt nod. Deciding on a question of my own I began to write beneath my previous message.
Will I be able to speak again?
He gave me a small smile when he saw this new message.
"Yes, it seems your voice wasn’t permanently damaged. With the medication I prescribed you should start to regain it slowly. You need to follow all my instructions carefully you still have some pretty serious injuries." he explained.
I was extremely relieved when he told me that. With out my voice I would never be able to use any of my powers, but thankfully I would be getting it back.
"Now, for a more important question," the doctor continued, "What exactly happened to you?"
The doctor sure didn’t waste any time in getting to the point now did he ?
I frowned and started writing again. I decided that the best thing to do was to keep the explanation as short and simple as possible.
My home was attacked and destroyed. I lost consciousness and woke up here.
Yes, that was as close to the truth as they were going to get. I definitely wasn’t inclined to going through the whole explanation of what happened when I wasn’t even sure of everything myself. To my relief that was enough to sedate the doctors curiosity.
"I see, I'm very sorry about your home." he responded. "I have taken the liberty of having more proper accommodations prepared for you. I'm sure you don't want to stay in a hospital ward for much longer. When you've recuperated we can discuss further plans. For now you should just rest and concentrate on your recovery."
He excused himself and left me alone with Duo. I fully expected him to leave too but he stayed. I was curious as to why I was getting all this attention. I was sure that all of this was costing someone a lot of money. I still had possession of the note pad so I thought I’d strike a conversation with my ' guardian angel '
I'm curious to know why I’m getting all of this attention. I'm sure it costs a fortune.
I jotted down.
He was looking curiously at me until I handed him the paper. He read the message and smirked.
"Perceptive aren’t you." he said, "well you can thank Quatre for all this hospitality. The Winner family is well respected and one of the wealthiest. He'd be here now, but he's taking care of some things for you. I'm sure he'll be around to see you soon."
I grinned and took the note pad back to jot down yet another message.
So this means I have two guardian angels?
He watched as I wrote this and laughed.
"Why two?" he asked.
You've been watching over me.
I quickly wrote down.
"But I’m not the one that looks like an angel" he replied.
I blinked in surprise. He was certainly very blunt and to the point. Our little conversation was about to continue just when the nurse came back into the room. She was carrying a tray with what looked like chicken soup and jello.
“Well now,” Kumiko said, “you really do seem like your doing much better. After you eat I think we could move you to your quarters. Mr. Winner insists that you be made comfortable.”
She smiled and set up the tray for me. I gave the food a dubious look. I seriously wasn’t in the mood to eat.
“Come on now. You need to eat. “ she insisted.
Kumiko was the doctor’s assistant and the nurse who had kept watch of me and my girls. I owed her a lot you could say. She has these warm hazel eyes that remind me of Luna, her hair is long, gold and wavy in contrast to mine, which has acquired a platinum blonde color. She kept her hair in a loose pony tail some strands were left loose framing her face. It gave her a motherly look despite her young features.
I decided I’d just eat a bit to please her and hopefully be able to leave the hospital bed I had been confined to for god knows how long. Duo gave me a smug look, knowing full well just how hard it would be to argue with Kumiko. I just glared at him and started on the food. I’ll admit that it was actually pretty good, the soup anyway.
There was a knock on the door and Kumiko got up to get open it. A young man with platinum blond hair, and blue eyes came through the door. We look so much alike I swear if I didn’t know any better I’d say I have a long lost brother. He was dressed in a white button up shirt khaki pants and a blue vest. He looked formal yet casual at the same time. Very few people could pull that off.
“Ah, Quatre my man,” Duo said humorously. “the man of the hour.”
Quatre grinned and set down a package he had been carrying on the table.
“Hello Duo,” he greeted.
Duo gave him a mock salute which Quatre ignored as he turned to greet me and Kumiko.
“How’s our patient, Kumiko?” he asked.
He continued to wear a warm smile as he spoke.
“Serena is doing quite well Mr. Winner.“ Kumiko responded.
“Wonderful! Kumiko, do you think Serena can leave the hospital wing now?“ Quatre asked.
Kumiko looked thoughtful for a moment before answering.
“Yes, she’s going to need some clothes though I had to get rid of the gowns she and the babies were wearing when you found them.”
Quatre grinned picking up the package he had set on the table and handed it to me.
“I’ve taken care of that.“ He admonished, “Serena how about you open that package I think what I ordered for you and the girls should be alright for the time being.”
I blinked and pointed at myself, questioning whether the package was actually for me. Quatre nodded and urged me to open it. I began to open it slightly embarrassed at all the attention I was getting. If I had a choice I would have preferred they let me die out there.
The contents of the package surprised me the most. There were three sets of clothing, for myself and the girls. I grinned at Quatre as I sorted through the clothing. The girls outfits were cute. I grabbed the notepad from the bedside table and scrawled out a ‘ Thank you ’ and held it up for him to see. He chuckled and ushered Duo out of the room with him.
Kumiko stayed behind to help me. She removed the tray with the remains of my lunch and helped me sit up. She made me stay put while she returned with some fresh bandages to replace the old ones and I sat patiently while she redressed all of the bandages. I began to notice all the little things I hadn’t noticed before. My right ankle and knee must have been damaged from the fall of the stairs in the palace and were in a tight bandage probably to serve as a cast and keep it set. It seemed I hadn’t done enough damage to need a hard cast. My right hand and elbow were both in the same predicament all tell tale signs that I had fallen heavily on my right side after all the nasty gash was on the right as well. After she re-did all the bandages, she moved to pick things up. I took that as an opportunity to get up and access the real damages and to test my new limits. I got up only to be hit with a nasty wave of nausea. I staggered back onto the bed shutting my eyes tightly to regain composure.
I was thankful that Kumiko hadn’t noticed so I sat for a few moments regaining my bearings. I stood again this time meeting the almost unbearably cold floor on my bare feet. I bit back a small cry and fought back the nausea, this time being the victor. I was standing, the next step was finding out how far I could walk with out becoming nauseous or worse passing out. I think by now Kumiko had noticed what I was doing but didn’t intervene. Again I had something to be thankful for. I wasn’t about to soften my new resolve now that I was determined.
I decided to set a goal point. Across the room Kumiko had set up a makeshift crib-playpen where the girls were. I would try walking that far. Since I had been off of the medication for a while I was feeling the effects of them wearing off and the pain from my abdominal wound came back with a vengeance. Kumiko saw me wince and that set her into action. Taking a bottle of my medication from the counter she had me sit down and take it with a glass of water.
“Serena, take it easy.” she chided, “you’re wounds are healing but you are still just as weak. How about I help you get dressed and then we move you to your new apartment.”
I nodded and allowed her to baby me for a little while longer.
Quatre, I decided was obviously very intuitive. He had the sizes pegged right and the outfit was actually something I saw myself picking out. The top was a navy blue muscle tank top with the adjustable spaghetti straps that fit me perfectly. Upon further rummaging I saw he’d matched the top with a pair of black cargo pants that we exactly my size. There was a pair of those dressy flip flops, the ones you could actually go out in. Again, dressy yet casual. Quatre was my kind of person. He probably also figured sandals would be the best since I had my ankle injury, hence the comfortable flip flops.
I quickly slipped the tank top on and Kumiko helped me with the pants. I noticed they were low-rise and were just below the gash on my stomach. I felt quite comfortable in them. I slipped on the flip flop sandals and Kumiko brought the girls over to dress them as well. They were wearing the little footy type pajamas that I thought were simply adorable. Reeni’s had a little bunny prints on them and I smirked at the irony of it.
I took out the toddler outfits Quatre had picked out and we set to dress the girls. Kumiko had Diana and I was dressing Reeni. I took the pajamas off of Reeni and slipped on the small white blouse. I had to admit it was cute and a definite change to all the formal wear we both had to endure back home. A pair of pink pull-on Capri pants that had a cute little floral stitch work on the pant leg completed the little outfit. Diana’s outfit was similar only pants were lavender.
There were two pairs of white Velcro sandals for the girls and I put those on their feet. I looked at them and I swear if they only had the same hair color they’d be twins.
I figured that their similar features would work in my favor since I claimed they were both mine. After having my girls dressed Kumiko left the room to retrieve a wheel chair. I tried to argue that I could walk but she refused to even contemplate the idea of letting make the trip to where ever it was they were moving me.
A few moments later she returned with reinforcements. Duo and Quatre had come back with her. Duo smirked and rather unceremoniously lifted me up and sat me in the wheel chair. I was going to learn to hate that smirk. I glared at him and he only smirked at me again. Kumiko walked over and handed me Reeni whom I set on my lap and Quatre already had Diana in arms.
“I have some patients to tend to Serena. The boys will settle you in and I’ll be around to check on you tomorrow.” Kumiko told me as she handed me a small package with my medications.
I nodded and she gave me a small glare.
“You’ll take your medication as indicated and take it easy, alright?” she warned.
I grinned and nodded again and she rolled her eyes in a ‘ what am I going to do with her ’ action
I put on my best ‘ I’ll be a good girl ’ face and Duo started to wheel me out of the room.
We past through several corridors of the base until we reached a sort of residential area. We continued on to an elevator which took us up to the 3rd floor. Once off the elevator I found my knew ‘ quarters ‘ to be just down the hall from the it. Quatre and Duo pointed out that they had their place on the same floor and for me not to hesitate to call on them if needed.
Finally stopping in front of my apartment Quatre slid the access card through the key slot and the door slid open with a hiss. The three of us went inside Duo still wheeling me on the chair, they simply refused to let me do anything. It was seriously starting to get on my nerves.
Irritated I stood from the chair as soon as Duo had stopped and though he made a move to make me sit back down I gave him a glare that set him straight. Feeling the tension in the room Quatre decided to lighten things.
“ How about we take a look around?” he said motioning past the foyer.
I nodded, shifting Reeni so that I could support her in my left arm propping her up on my hip.
I had to hand it to Quatre. When he took care of things he really took care of things down to the last detail. The place was fully furnished and everything looked so refined and expensive. The living room on its own had a wonderful European manor house look to it. The couch, love seat and arm chair had chenille and damask upholstery and elaborate crackle bisque wood carved frames. The coffee table and set of end tables were made to match with elaborately designed claw carving on the legs. Along the other side of the wall there was a wall-unit of the same wood the rest of the living room furniture was made of. The unit was fitted with a stereo system and a rather large television set, there was plenty of space to put a collection of books or whatever suited my fancy.
Walking into the kitchen I found it fully equipped with everything. Microwave, Toaster oven all sorts of cooking utensils and a full dish set. Everything was black and silver including the refrigerator which with out checking I knew to be fully stocked.
I grinned as I looked around. I was definitely going to enjoy cooking in this kitchen. Yes, don’t laugh. I did eventually learn how to cook and quite good in fact. The fact that I had spent the better of three years with servants didn’t dull my talent at all. I had taken to sneaking into the kitchen with the cook and helping to make the meals. No one ever knew they were really complimenting my cooking. I will be for ever in Makoto’s debt for having the patients to awaken that talent in me.
The dinning room which could be seen from across the kitchen counter was something else all together. It was made of Asian hardwoods and oak veneers, the table had a washed bisque finish. There was elaborate hand carved detail on pedestal table and matching chairs, they were upholstered in white to contrast the kitchen. I ventured on and found a sliding door that led to the bedrooms. There were two. A slightly larger one to the right and the smaller one to the left. There was a bathroom in between.
I hadn’t noticed that the guys had gone quiet as I walked through what would be my new home. The girls room was the first I entered. I was immediately in awe when I stepped in. It was everything I had dreamed of. The room was left with white walls unpainted probably for me to work on how I wished. I smiled thinking that would be a fun project, to actually be able to paint the walls and decorate the room for myself.
The furniture was all of white wash wood and really beautiful. Two cribs, the kind that could be turned into beds as the children grow out of them claimed one wall with a night table in between them. A dresser claimed the wall directly across from that There was a small entertainment unit which housed a television set and a book case area beneath it. I already imagined it filled with various story books.
There was a toy chest on the third wall beneath the window and a rocking chair. The chair matched the room furniture nicely. I curiously opened the toy chest it and found there were a few toys to get the girls started with. I picked up a teddy bear and gave it to Reeni. She giggled and hugged it. I smiled at her and tapped her nose out of habit. She giggled more as we continued our little investigation. Of course the fourth wall was home to the closet and the door I had come through. The closet was open and there were several outfits of clothes hung neatly on those cute little children’s clothes hangers.
I was beginning to wonder how long I had been holed up in the hospital wing if Quatre actually had the time to get all this set up for me. This place screamed interior designers. I imagined him spending a fortune just to pull all the strings for this to come together. I was a complete stranger and he was treating me like family. I was beyond embarrassed and guilty for all the attention. It was lucky I didn’t have my voice because words weren’t enough to thank everyone especially Quatre.
I set Reeni down in the crib on the right side of the room and as if predicting my next action Quatre handed Diana to me and I set her in the next crib. I reached into the toy chest again dragging out another stuffed animal. A bunny this time, and I gave it to her to hold. I drew the sheets the crib had been lined with over her and her eyes instantly drooped giving into sleep. I returned to Reeni pulling the sheets over her. She resisted giving me a small pout but another soft tap on her nose was all the prodding she needed to fall into slumber as well. I kissed her forehead and watched her breathing slow. I smiled feeling like I’d just stand there an eternity watching my Reeni sleep.
She truly is my life. I wouldn’t have been standing there in the first place if I didn’t have her. She is my only anchor to the real world. Tears had started trickling down my cheek. They went unnoticed for a few seconds before I scrubbed at them angrily. I felt Duo’s hand on my shoulder with out looking.
It struck me hard when I realized I had felt rather than saw. How was I so sure it was Duo and not Quatre? Maybe it was because I had held that very same hand in mine for several weeks while I was in and out of consciousness. I suddenly felt very weird and tensed at his touch. He seemed to notice but didn’t relent until he had led me out of the girls room. He carefully shut the door behind us and then I was led it to what would become my room.
My room? Would it ever really be MY room?
I didn’t investigate my bedroom as I had the girls. I vaguely realized everything was in polished oak. A rather large four-poster bed dead center with the most unbelievably plush mattress. I don’t know why but the dresser caught my attention and I made my way to it leaving Quatre and Duo at the door. My finger tips touched the sleek polished wood and then I slowly worked myself into looking at the dresser mirror.
I suppose you could say I changed and hadn’t at the same time. My eyes were not the bright blue they used to be but looked haunted and darker specked with silver. My neck was still marred with a few bruises but they were beginning to fade. My hair though still long as it was always was now free from the usual meatball hair style and picked up in a plain pony tail. Some how I looked so unlike myself. I felt my body protest at the scrutiny and my knee buckled under my weight it was obviously tired of carting me around and decided ‘ okay Blondie time to sit this out ’
Duo was there in a second and rather unceremoniously lifted me into his arms and carted me over to the bed. There was a ruffle of sheets and then I was set on the bed in sitting position as Duo proceeded remove my sandals. He shifted me so that I was now laying in the bed I let him maneuver me like a puppet until he was sure I was comfortable. The sheets had been turned up and he drew them over me. I didn’t protest. I mean I didn’t even have the voice to do so.
I closed my eyes trying to drown myself in the comfort of the bed, but somehow it felt too comfortable, too not mine. I pretended to start to drift into sleep, purposely slowing my breath until I felt their foot steps heading out of the room. They were so quiet it was almost inaudible but I caught it none the less. Then a tiny creak of the door and they were gone. I was left to my solitude
Truly, blissful, solitude
I cried myself to sleep that night. That was the night Serenity Tsukino Chiba died and gave way to the true me, the one with out the mask of innocence. All the masks fell and were washed away with the last tears I would ever cry.

ATONEMENT
Serena’s rebirth has caused some serious changes. With her new life commencing she struggles to make it all come together. Her new friends will help her on the way as her new identity and life take her for a wild ride.
A/N : I decided to try first person view to get the true feel of what Serena is going through and I probably will continue with her perspective on things for a while. Let me know what you guys think. Also I thought I may play around with the idea of having some of the other characters views. I also had the idea of maybe having one of the Gundam boys go with her and the girls to the DBZ world. I would like everyone’s opinion on which one of them would be the best to go. I hope everyone is enjoying the chapters and that the rewrites have been a real improvement. Please R/R everyone ^^

Next time on Lives Crossed …..
