Chapter Five - Hell Cat
< L 1 Colony - Resistance Base >
< Duo’s point of view >
There were only two of us on the dock. Heero Yuy or Mr. ‘Perfect Soldier’ as I like to call him and myself. Heero and I are always early its an odd habit but we’ve both developed tendencies of being perfectionist. As always he was standing a bit off to the side brooding. I’ve never known Yuy to be sociable.
I leaned against the wall of the carrier watching as they loaded the Gundams. Zero and Sand Rock had already been loaded and now they were loading Altron. Chang would definitely not be please about Altron being man handled like that. The crew was never very careful with equipment.
Speaking of Chang …
“ MAXWELL!” he said exasperatedly, “ the least you can do is tell those imbeciles to be careful with the Gundams.”
“Wu-Man ! Nice to see you too.” I responded.
He shook his head and gave me a pat on the shoulder before walking off to talk to the crew.
Good luck.. not like they’d ever listen to any of us.
I chuckled to myself and turned around just in time so see her walk in. Serena. Now if there was ever someone who can manage absolute perfection it was her. Her every move is perfection. I think from the very moment I met her that day three years ago I became infatuated with her. I never expected her to ever be introduced to this part of our world. The war that is, I had hoped we could keep her from it. However, our little Serena surprised us once again with her tenacity. She set her mind to the training and came out to be enough of a soldier to even rival Heero. She became our Hell Cat.
Coming from the hell that was the training we put her through the Hell part of her name was born. Cat was due to her grace she portrayed only worthy of a Cat. She gave me a mock salute as she approached, that cute smile of hers playing at her lips. I was absolutely, completely dumbfounded at how she managed to look that beautiful in anything she wears. Her blonde hair was tied back in a sports braid and she was clad in dark clothing like the rest of us. Loose fitting black jeans, a navy blue tank top and her military issue boots. Her bag slung over her shoulder.
I waved back and plastered my award winning Maxwell grin. Something was out of place. Her smile wasn’t genuine. I’ve known Serena long enough to tell when something was wrong. There is something about her eyes that gives her away. At first its so faint that no one notices until you know her well enough or in my case spend enough time staring into those blue eyes of hers. Her eyes hold her true expressions they have these silvery specks that when she’s truly happy her eyes almost shine otherwise she has this habit of avoiding eye contact. She knows that’s what gives her away. I also know enough about masking feelings to know when someone’s doing it. I’ve done it all my life. I’m not the laid back person that everyone thinks I am. I’ve seen hard ship, and some of the most horrifying things imaginable. This is something I seem to have in common with her.
I knew what was troubling her. The two little girls that she would be leaving behind, her daughters. Serena had never been away from the girls, the three of them were almost attached at the hip. She leaned against the carrier next to me not saying anything until she caught sight of Yuy. A mischievous grin crossed her features and she quirked a brow at me.
That was genuine, Serena wasn’t Serena with out being mischievous.
"Who's that?" she asked in a tone only for me to hear.
I leaned over in a conspiratorial manner and whispered, ”Another pilot"
She rolled her eyes and jabbed me in the stomach with her elbow I chuckled.
"I know he is a pilot."
"Heero Yuy. He's our mission leader." I amended.
"So serious!" she said while making a mocking impression of him.
I laughed out right then and she started to giggle with me. That caught his attention and earned us a glare from our 'leader' He almost did a double take when he really took notice of Serena. It went unnoticed by her but I caught the look just the same. He quickly masked his look of surprise and walked over.
"Maxwell, what's the woman doing here? This mission is top secret." he asked me in monotone.
Serena didn’t even give me a chance to formulate a reply. It was quite hilarious seeing the petite form that is Serena stand square in front of Yuy and face him down.
"This 'woman' has a name. You may want to ask what it is some day. If you don't think names are appropriate for 'your' mission then perhaps you prefer my code name. Pilot 06, Hell Cat"
“Hnn”
That was all the response that came out of his mouth before he promptly turned and walked away. Serena got an amused look on her face and I instantly knew this was going to be quite the interesting mission. Who will break who first? Not to mention she had yet to meet Wufei, he was trouble all on his own not the kind I am mind you, but his whole I’m more honorable than you code was totally shitty. He needs to loosen up about as much as Yuy does. Then there is Trowa, our silent guy if there was one think that irked Serena as much as it irked me was total silence. Serena could be as bubbly and talkative as I could be given the occasion. Another similarity between us.
Very interesting mission indeed …
I noticed Altron had finally been secured and Wufei's form emerged from the ship. He was wearing his 'I’m not in a good mood so bite me' scowl. Sometimes I think he ties that pony tail of his on too tight. He walked over to us the scowl leaving his Chinese features only to be replaced by a questioning look directed at me.
"Are we almost set to go Chang?" I asked trying to derail him from the obvious question he was going to ask.
"All except for Winner and Barton." he replied, "I didn’t know that we were having a guest on this little adventure though, Maxwell."
"Hate to break it to you Chang, but she's our sixth man."
"What?!" he asked incredulously.
Serena smirked.
"Chang Wufei, meet Selena Winner our sixth pilot." i introduced.
"And since when do women become pilots?"
Serena rolled her eyes at him it was the second time in one day she had been labeled as such.
"Since this woman passed the training." Serena cut in.
"Lets see how well you do with the real thing." Wufei replied.
He was right about that, training never prepared you for what your going to see once your actually on a mission, and any mission could go sour with in minutes.
Serena gave him a petulant look.
"I can stomach anything you can, Chang, being a woman doesn’t make me any less of a pilot than you."
"We'll see about that. If your anything like Winner though, you must be at least a decent pilot."
Now Wufei was smirking, leave it to him to mask a compliment with in an insult it was his way of showing he could at least tolerate you.
"Where is Winner anyway?" Wufei inquired noticing we still lacked two of our squad.
I shrugged.
"As far as I know I heard there was trouble clearing Hell Cat for the mission. He probably went to straighten things out."
"Did they expect to send six pilots while lacking a Gundam? They are absolute imbeciles if they think they can do that."
"Apparently one of Hell Cat's Weapons wasn’t suitable for clearance.”
At that moment Quatre and Trowa entered the docking bay, Quatre looking pleased with himself. Obviously our little golden boy had pulled some strings to get Hell Cat cleared. He had some official looking papers in his hands.
"Hey Quat, Barton," I said in greeting.
"Hello," Quatre replied.
Trowa simply nodded.
"About time Winner, we're about to be off schedule with the departure."
"I had to get this straightened out." Quatre replied while brandishing the papers.
He handed them over to Serena.
"Hell Cat's clearance," he elaborated, "they should be loading her now and we should be ready to go by launch."
I laughed, "better tell Yuy that before he starts lecturing us about the importance of a well calculated mission."
Quatre shook his head with a smile.
"No need for that we're still on schedule."
