Chapter 4: Gone Missing!?

A loud knocking sound startled Bulma awake. Where am I? She thought groggily trying to remember any events before going to sleep. She couldn't open her eyes, they felt glued shut. That knocking sound rung in her ears again.

"Go away…" Bulma said hoarsely but it was barely audible.

"Bulma? Bulma are you in there?" Came a familiar voice when the knocking ceased. "Bulma if you're there please answer me." Said the voice again. Why couldn't she place the voice, it seemed so familiar. Her brain was refusing to work and she didn't know why. She felt like shit and then it hit her. She sat up quickly and gasped.

"Vegeta!" She cried out, clawing at her eyes to open. After a moment of rubbing at them, they peeled open and she looked fuzzily around.

"Bulma is that you?" Came Goku's voice who had been knocking on the door for some time. He had invited himself in because he knew no one would mind. After all, he had been a friend of the family every since his childhood.

"Ye…yes Goku…I-I'm here…just a sec…" She slowly got up, using the wall to support herself. Her legs shook violently, knees knocking together as she slowly unlocked the door. As Goku opened the door Bulma's knees gave in and she fell weakly. Goku with his Saiyan speed caught her just before she hit the ground and hoisted her up, holding her like a small child.

"Are you alright Bulma?" He asked, concern showing plain on his face and in his voice. His brows were creased in a certain concentration as he stared down at her pale face.

"Yes.." She lied softly, giving him the best smile she could manage.

"No you're not…what's wrong Bulma?" Goku insisted, knowing her tale-tells.

"I SAID I WAS ALRIGHT GOKU! IF I SAY I'M ALRIGHT THEN BY GODDESS I'M ALRIGHT!" She yelled losing her temper. Who is he to tell me I'm not alright. Goku's eyes had widened some, his brows lifted in a puzzling question. Bulma bit her lower lip realizing that she just yelled at her best friend, when all he wanted to do was help.

"Sorry Bulma you just looke…" He stopped when Bulma shook her head semi violently.

"Don't be Goku, I'm the one who should be apologizing. You were right, there is something wrong…I'm just not sure I want to share it with anyone." She mumbled, lowering her head in shame at the look of hurt on Goku's face.

"Bulma…you can tell me anything…you know that…" He said quietly his voice careful, clear of all emotion. It was a very un-Goku like thing. He always wore his emotions, and seeing him trying to hide them made Bulma's stomach churn.

She sighed, the day wasn't looking up "I know Goku…I know…maybe if I get a shower and something to eat, I'll think of a way to start and tell you alright?" She looked up at his face.

He smiled and nodded in agreement "OOOKAY! But…you'll have to cook." He laughed putting a hand on the back of his head, still supporting Bulma with his other arm. "Because I don't know the first thing about cooking!" He laughed which cheered Bulma up a bit. Goku was a fun person to be around, she was glad he was here for her now. Now…that she was hurting inside worse than ever before.

"Alright," She smiled walking slowly over to the shower "Just keep your Saiyan backside out of trouble while I'm in the shower." Goku laughed and closed the door, his laughter echoing off the walls even after he had left the hallway. Bulma just shook her head, a smile set on her face, Goku may have been an adult, but he was still a true kid at heart.

"Mrs. Briefs! Hey! Are you home?" Goku scratched his head, with a thoughtful puzzled look on his face. He figured he'd find them to keep him company while Bulma was cleaning up. They're usually always here. Goku frowned, in fact…I've never seen them away from their home, with the exception of Bulma. He grinned lopsidedly, Bulma wasn't the indoor type, she was a wild person who couldn't be contained. Goku decided to check the laboratory, maybe Mr. Briefs was down there, working on some new project or other. Yeah! That was probably it…but Goku couldn't stop the itching feeling in the back of his head that told him something was wrong. Whenever he got this feeling it was always right. Reaching the laboratory door he went to grip the knob but found the door was already cracked open.

"Hello? Dr. Briefs? Anybody?" Goku said a bit softly, as if afraid to disturb someone. What he got in response was the oddest sound he had ever heard. It sounded like a squawking bird combined with an irritated snake. Goku's eyes widened, the lab was a mess. Files were all over the place, along with computer data, a small fire had started at one of the computers which had electricity circuits sparking from it.

"What happened here!?" Yelled Goku, who was actually expecting an answer. That strange squawking sound again. Goku realized what it was when he saw an overturned garbage pale with a tail sticking out of it. He quickly ran over and pushed over the pale, scooping up the trembling figure.

"It's alright kitty, what were you doing under there? What happened in here?" Goku asked, petting the frightened cat that always sat atop the Doctor's shoulder.

"Meow…" Whined the pitch black cat who quickly turned over on it's back in Goku's arms and brought its tail to lay against its stomach. It grabbed its tail with his front paws and starting licking the tip of it, with long caring strokes.

"Gee little guy, are you okay?" Asked Goku curiously. Just another strained mew and the cat went back to licking it's hurt tail. Goku frowned, obviously someone had broken in…what was Bulma going to say? After all…her parents were missing and the lab was a mess. A sure sign of struggle. But how to tell her…he sighed in his mind, that was one task he was NOT ready for.

Bulma was getting out of the shower, wrapping a towel expertly around her body so that nothing she didn't want to show was exposed. She grabbed a second towel and wrapped it around her head. She hummed the Dbz theme song (Rock the Dragon) under her breath (subconsciously :P). She opened the door and was leaving to go get clothes so she could dress and nearly walked right into Goku outside the door. She stared at him for a heartbeat or two, her eyes flicking to the purring ball he held in his hands. Her eyes flicked back to his face. He looked quite serious which made Bulma's face form into a puzzled expression.

She searched for something to say and blurted out the first thing that came to mind because she couldn't stand the silence for much longer "Did you actually get that cat to part with dad?" She chuckled and brushed past Goku to push her bedroom door open.

"Not exactly…I kind of…found him all by his lonesome…" Goku said uncomfortably. He didn't want to have to tell Bulma the news. Wait? Why was he jumping to conclusions…well it was the only explanation there was…he sighed in his mind. No, he could feel it, they were missing.

"What exactly do you mean not exactly? He's always with my father and if he's not, he's eating. Oh is that it? You found him eating and couldn't resist loving up to him?" She grinned turning in her doorway to stare at him. The look on Goku's face stopped her grin right in its tracks.

"Bulma…I don't know how to tell you this…" Goku muttered, unsure on how to say it. Why him? Why couldn't Vegeta be the one here to tell her. He wouldn't have a problem breaking the bad news to her. He might even enjoy it.

"Tell me what Goku? If you have something to say just say it, I promise not to be offended or anything." She laughed nervously because his facial expressions weren't changing in the slightest. She wanted to grab him and shake him violently back and forth yelling at him to at least smile. But living around him all her life, if he was serious about something he didn't change his mind about it…unless he was starved for food. Bulma chuckled in her mind uneasily, Saiyan's have a deadly hunger, if they're hungry you best keep out of the way or it just might mean your life.

Goku watched the play of memories run over her face like water, flowing so freely and decided to just outright tell her. "Bulma your parents are missing…the labs a mess, like there was a struggle of some kind, but I'm not sure." Goku said, ready for the explosion.

"Is that all?" Bulma laughed, who hadn't really registered what he said yet. "So my parents are missing and they might be dead and…" The shock hit her and her eyes widened. "THEY'VE GONE MISSING?!" She screamed and rolled her eyes in the back of her head fainting clear out. Goku quickly tossed the black fur ball over his head (poor kitty :S) and caught Bulma before she hit the floor. That hadn't went as well as he had thought but hey…at least she wasn't crying her eyes out…or maybe that would have been better then having to stare at her limp form as he picked her up to put her in bed. The towel on her head had slipped off and fell on the floor. Goku just left it there. He would have to call the other "Z" warriors and tell them what had happened. He had no idea what was going on but he wanted the gang involved if anything went down. He lay Bulma gently in her bed (mind you she's still in her towel) and covered her up. Now he would have to call the fighters. He walked out of her room, closing the door behind him and headed for the kitchen where the phone was. He examined it a minute before picking up the phone from its cradle. The cat had walked into the kitchen and was sitting near Goku's feet, glaring up at him, the fact that it thought he was a baka plain on its face.(hehe ^^)

"Hmm….I think it's this one…" He said pushing a button and putting the phone to his ear (upside down I might add). "Hello? Hello? Can you hear me? I'm trying to reach my friends, do you think you can help me? Hello?" He took the phone from his ear and stared at it with a frown set on his face. Scratching his head he put the phone back down in it's cradle.

"Man when Bulma wakes up I have to tell her that she needs to get a new phone." He scratched his head thoughtfully. "Guess it's just back to good old fashioned flying" He said and went to the door, ready to take off. Taking off he thought…boy phones sure are useless.
