Mister Nice Kai
August, 2005
MNK:Okay, faithful readers, this is a no-plot story. That’s right. No plot. Just a bunch of fluffy stuff. In this story, May June and Dende are both around seven years old, physically and mentally. Gohan is about the same age. They are all living in Anirania, in the Opalace. Why did I name the story like I did? You’ll see...Mister Nice Kai
August, 2005
Dende sat in a window seat in the front room of the Opalace, thinking hard. He’d just moved to planet Aniria, to live with the great Piccolo Majunior and his family. He was friends with all of the Opalace’s inhabitants, and they were all quite fond of him. Still, there was one who captivated him.
May June. Piccolo’s daughter May June. She was about his height, with beautiful, smoky teal eyes and a long, cat-like teal tail. Her short teal hair all spiked back except for one ornery ridge straight down the middle of her scalp. She usually wore a navy halter top and baggy navy slacks with brown sandals. She always blushed when they were together. Then again, so did he. She had a beautiful voice, and her natural scent was even more beautiful...Ferns, butterflies, and the sea.
Dende couldn’t help thinking about great Elder Guru when he thought of May June. He was one of Guru’s favorites, and they often spent hours talking, sometimes of the past, sometimes of the present. What stood out in his mind at times like this, though, was the times when Guru would talk about how once there had been female Nameks on Namek-sei. He’d tell Dende of his mate, who’d died in the great storm. Each time he’d seem so happy, as though the mere thought of his dear Jira was enough to brighten his day. At times like this, he’d talk of youth, life, and love, telling Dende to never miss a chance to take advantage of any of the three. “All three only come once,” he said. “And you never know what you have until it’s been taken from you.” At this point, he’d heaved a sigh, half of pain, half of joy. Joy at being able to say he’d taken advantage of all three, pain at the fact that only one remained in his life, and that was life itself.
True, Dende was a little young to be in love...Wasn’t he? He was only about seven Earth years old, and still at times thought that girls were ‘Yucky.’ But May June...she was never yucky. She was perfect. Dende shivered.
“Feh.” he snorted, crossing his arms. “Love. Hope it’s nothing catching.” Then something else crossed his mind. “I wonder if she likes bugs...”
Yamcha and Krillin sat in the living room, watching Television. Out of the blue, young Dende came into the room, carrying a small cage made of balsa wood and wire screen. “Whatcha got there, Den?” Krillin asked. Dende walked over to him and set the cage in his lap. Krillin peered inside it. It held an enormous millipede. “Nice bug. Where’d yah find it?”
“The Eastern courtyard.” he answered happily, as Yamcha examined his bug. “Do you think she’ll like it?” Krillin blinked a few times, wondering if he’d heard the boy right.
“Pardon?”
“May June. Do you think she’ll like it?” Krillin and Yamcha just looked at each other for a moment, then burst out laughing. “What’s so funny?” Dende asked in a quiet, somewhat hurt voice.
“Girls don’t like bugs!” Yamcha wheezed. “They’re scared of ‘em!”
“Try something else, Dende.” Krillin smiled. “Girls like flowers, kittens, jewelry...you know...girly things.” Yamcha finally managed to stop laughing, only to start again at the memory of the last time Bulma saw a spider. “Good luck, Kid. You couldn’t have picked a better girl.” Dende slumped out of the room, wondering what he could do. Then, his eyes lit up. Maybe he could find her a cooler bug...
May June stood on the sand, facing the ocean. Her short hair rustled on the breeze, and the mesh bag hanging from her wrist flopped like a flag. Without warning, she spread her arms and dove into the deep water. She absolutely loved to go pearl hunting. After a few moments of swimming, she came to a large settlement of oysters on a ledge just below the water’s surface.
“Well,” she thought to herself, picking one up and gently opening it. “Here goes nothing!”
Dende and Gohan clambered over the rocks. So far all they’d found were a dead spider, a fried worm, and part of a scorpion, none of which were very cool.
“Come on, Dende.” he said glumly. “These bugs are lamer than strained peas. Let’s go look around in the western courtyard.” Dende sighed. He was about to reply, when he saw a really COOL BUG! It was an enormous, fuzzy, green caterpillar with a big red, heart-shaped spot on its back. It was headed toward a hole in the dirt.
“Gohan, come check this one out!” Dende shook the millipede out of the cage and plunked the huge caterpillar in it.
“Oh, WOW!” Gohan murmured, staring at it. “She’ll LOVE this one!”
May June was about to give up when she noticed a rather small oyster in the very back. She opened it and mentally gasped. Resting on the pillow of pink muscle, was an abnormally large black pearl! She tossed it into her bag, and swam to the surface.
When she got to the Opalace, she went to her sister Celena’s rooms in the basement. “Celena!” she called out upon entering the first room. Her sister came in.“Hey, June! What brings you all the way down here?” May June handed her the black pearl, which had been painstakingly dried on the way to the room.
“Can you turn this into a necklace for me, please?” Celena smiled at her younger sister.
“Sure, Hon. What do you have in mind?”
“Ummm...” June thought for a moment. “Do you have any more of those claw-type- -things? You know, the things that you hang marbles from?” Celena thought for a moment, then nodded. “And have you got any more of that black leather cord?” She nodded again, leading June next door to the workshop. She rummaged around in drawers for a moment, then held out what May June was looking for.
“Like this?”
“YEAH!” May June grinned. Celena set to work. Within a few minutes, the black pearl was in the talons of a small silver dragon’s claw.
“Now, how long do you want it to be?” May June pointed at the middle of her chest.
“This long.” Celena measured the leather cord, and cut it to the length her younger sister wanted. She slid the freshly dried claw and pearl onto it, and tied the loose ends together.
“So, who’s it for?” Celena asked. May June blushed.
“Dende.” she smiled shyly.”
“Really...” she smirked. “Well, I hope he likes it.”
“Me too, Celena. Thanks!” May June raced out of the room, the necklace safe in her hand.
On his way to May June’s rooms, Dende literally ran into her. He blushed furiously, hiding the cage behind his back. She blushed hard, smiling shyly at him. “Hi, Dende.” she said quietly. “You wanna come to my room for a while?” She blushed even harder.
“S...Sure...?” He followed her to her living room. She gently closed the door behind him. An uneasy silence enveloped the room, then finally...
“I brought you something...” they said in unison. May June handed Dende the necklace, and he handed her the cage. Their eyes widened when they saw the gift they’d gotten.
“Where did you find this bug?” May June breathed. Dende’s eyes lit up.
“Y...You like it?”
“I LOVE it!” she grinned
“I found him out in the quarry. I love the necklace...” he gently slipped it on over his head. “Thanks.”
“That’s a black pearl---the first one I’ve ever found. I hoped you’d like it.” she thought a moment. “Dende...do you know what kind of bug this is?” she asked quietly, her gaze locked with his.
“Nope. You?” She smiled and nodded.
“It’s a Love Bug. They’re really rare in these parts.” She blushed again. Dende flushed dark purple in embarrassment.
“Heh...” he smiled, his upper right fang showing. “June...” he asked quietly, averting his eyes to the window, watching the sun set. “Will you be...my...girlfriend?” He spoke the last three words so quietly she could barely hear him. She threw her arms around him, grinning like mad.
“I will...” she murmured against his shoulder. She pulled back a bit, and kissed him on the cheek. Together, they sat down on May June’s bed and watched the setting sun.
