Chapter 2

Clear blue eyes glanced upwards, viewing the sun, distorted by the water. Pushing off the bottom of the pool, Trunks rose to the surface. Gasping in air, he swiped a purple strand out of his face.

It was nice having the gang back together. It was Gohan's birthday, and all of their friends had arrived at Capsule Corp. They always had the occasional get-togethers at Trunks's house; it was the biggest, and there was the pool.

It was strange seeing the men and women who had been raised and trained him, getting along, nonetheless. It was incredible that Yamucha didn't try to murder his father. Trunks smirked at that thought. He knew all about the scandal that had resulted in himself. He found it to be rather amusing, actually.

"Trunks Briefs! You have been in that pool for hours! Get out here and eat your food!"

Trunks nearly winced at the volume of his mother's voice. He heard Goku's cheerful laughter and heard him mention something about glass shattering. Of course, this caused Buruma to go ballistic.

Trunks swam towards the shallow end of the pool. He knew it was childish, but he swam slowly, not wanting to leave the warm water.

"Yeah, so what's this I hear about an assistant, Buruma?" Goku asked, trying to change the subject to avoid pain. It was incredible; even the strongest of men were intimidated by Buruma Briefs.

Of course, at the mention of her assistant, Buruma brightened. "She should be arriving in a couple of days, actually. I'm really excited. She seemed really nice on the phone. But there was something famili-"

"Who is that?" Goten interrupted, staring openly at something. They all followed his gaze.

Trunks's breath caught in his throat.

A girl was walking towards them. Tumbling red waves of hair bounced as she walked, blowing gently in the breeze. She wore sunglasses and a leather trench coat, though the weather was warm. The trench coat blew open in the gust of wind, revealing a pair of tight black leggings and a red belly shirt. Trunks's curiosity peaked.

"Um… excuse me," Buruma said, "but this is private property. You're going to have to-"

She trailed off as the girl stopped a few yards away. It was impossible to read the girl's expression, and the sunglasses were mirrored.

Suddenly, surprising them all, the girl stuck out her hand.

"Buruma Briefs, I presume?"

The girl's voice was cheerful, but there was a hint of sarcasm behind it, as though she knew she was right.

Buruma nodded and asked, "Who are you?"

The girl pulled her hand back, running it through her red tresses.

"Forgive me," she began, removing the sunglasses. "I forgot my manners."

Bright eyes stared out from beneath heavy lashes, and Trunks stared back. These eyes were blue and green, but rings of yellow surrounded the pupils. They were like her voice.

"I'm Ni, your new assistant."

Buruma sighed, a smile on her lips. "Hi. It's a pleasure to meet you, though I was expecting you in a few days."

The two shook hands, and Buruma, ever the friendly person, began introducing everyone. Trunks hung back, noticing that the girl simply nodded at the group.

"This is my son, Trunks," Buruma finished, finally reaching the back of the group. Trunks glanced tentatively at the girl before putting his hand out. She shook it gently. Her hands were ice cold.

"Oh, there you are, Juu!" Buruma suddenly called. Trunks looked behind him and saw the person in question.

"Ni, this is Juuhachi-gou. Juu, this is my new assistant."

The two looked at each other, neither moving. Suddenly, Ni spoke.

"Juuhachi-gou?" she repeated, raising a brow. Trunks swore he heard Kuririn groan.

"Yeah. Is that a problem?" Juuhachi-gou asked. She was evidently unhappy.

"No. But out of curiosity, 18th what?"

Everyone stopped. Juuhachi-gou narrowed her eyes. "What?"

"Your name means number 18. The 18th what?" Ni said, as though this were completely logical.

In less than a second Juuhachi-gou had Ni by the throat, pinned against the wall. No one could speak.

"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Juuhachi-gou yelled.

And to everyone's astonishment, Ni simply laughed. She laughed as though this were some new joke.

Juuhachi-gou dropped her, backing away a few steps.

Ni finally calmed down enough to speak.

"Ah, I've searched far and wide for you, and stories from you and Juunana-gou's expeditions should have been warnings, but, dear sister, you are truly amazing. You truly are."

Juuhachi-gou fumed. "What did you call me?"

"Sister. My. Dear. Sister." Ni replied, saying each word as its own sentence.

"I don't have a sister!" Juuhachi-gou cried.

"Not to your knowledge. But you had a twin, with black hair, ne? Juunana-gou. Our older brother."

"What the hell is she saying?" Juuhachi-gou screamed. No one moved.

Ni sighed. "Perhaps I should have used my full name for introductions. `Ni' is just a nickname. My real name is Nijuuni-gou."
