He still couldn't believe it. His father had returned, and with *him* no less. Goten lifted the axe high and grunted as he swung it down with such great force that it split the log in two. He bent over to pick up the twin pieces and threw them over into a small pile that was ready to be stacked against the house.
His eating habits often made his mother go through an entire day's work of wood just to keep their stove running. Now that their father had returned, his workload would change. If he knew his mother, she would be cooking for him again very soon, whether she wanted to or not. Goten didn't know how he felt about that. All he knew was that he was not ready to forgive his dad for abandoning them for so long. Yes, Goku had done it before, but Goten had not been old enough to feel the loss of his father then.
He told himself that he shouldn't care so much about it, but he did. He couldn't help it. A part of him wanted his father to suffer. Maybe it was his Saiyan side.
Dende, he wondered what would have happened if he had let that part of him out to vent his anger. Nothing good obviously.
He positioned another block of wood on the tree stump and lifted the axe again but hesitated when he saw out of the corner of his eye a flash of orange. He let the axe fall and the blade was imbedded into the wood.
*Damn it.*
"Goten."
Hearing his name he turned around, the handle of the axe still in his grasp. His father was taking him in, noting the changes in his body and stance. Beside him stood the boy that Goku had been fascinated with all those years ago. He wasn't the scrawny kid that Goten remembered. He was taller, muscular, his hair thicker. He stared openly at Goten. It creeped him out.
"Goten," his father said, "you've really grown."
"Yes," Goten told him, "I did fine without you."
He had expected some reaction from either one of them, but his father seemed unbothered by his cold response and the kid just kept staring at him. It was irritating. "Shouldn't you be off somewhere with your...pupil?"
"I came to see you and your mom," Goku announced.
"Well, you've already seen me. I don't know if mom wants to see you."
"Goten," Goku tried to touch him but he took a few steps back out of his reach.
"Just go talk to her. If she'll let you. I have work to do." He returned to chopping wood not caring if his father and the boy were still at his back. After a few minutes, he felt his dad's presence diminish and knew that he had gone into the house. However, there was another set of eyes focused on him. He could feel them piercing into him. A glance over his shoulder told him that it was the kid. He was surprised that the boy was still hanging around. Of course, his father would have been stupid to show up in front of Chichi with the boy in tow, but Goten would have preferred it if he didn't had an audience while he was chopping wood. Maybe if he were lucky, the kid would keep his mouth shut and leave him in peace.
"You're father told me a lot about you."
Goten guessed that luck wasn't with him today. He chose to ignore him, but he obviously couldn't take a hint. He rounded Ten, an irritating smile on his face. "He said that you're very strong."
Goten sighed heavily and frowned. "Yeah? Well he lied to you, because I don't even train anymore."

That morning, Uub had experienced anxiety at seeing his teacher's son again. He didn't know what to expect when they came upon him splitting wood. Surely, the fierce beating of his heart had not been caused by anticipation but by fear. Goten was after all holding an axe -a very dangerous looking one at that. Once more, Uub had been struck by the similarities between the father and the son.
There had been no welcome from him for Goku. His harsh gaze had made Uub want to squirm in shame. They were clearly causing him pain.
Uub was thankful that his master had left them alone. Perhaps he and Goten could become friends. He started up a conversation with him, hoping that he would respond. To his delight, he did, but his words sounded bitter and resentful in Uub's ears.
*I don't even train anymore.*
Uub's smile slipped away at his confession. Goten was a Saiyan. Saiyans loved to fight. Goku had told him that. It was as necessary to them as breathing.
"Why did you stop training?"
"There wasn't the need for me to train. Things were quiet," Goten said. "Besides, I had better things to do, like work and school. Someone had to help my mom."
"It must have been hard."
"Nothing that a weakling like me couldn't handle," he muttered and kept on chopping wood.
*You're not a weakling, Goten!* Uub wanted to tell him. Anyone who would sacrifice their training to take care of their family was strong.
His adoration for Goten grew. He had heard of him through Goku's descriptive memories of him. His teacher's love for his son had carried over in his voice, and Uub had become enamored with Goten before he had even first laid eyes on him.
Uub loved his teacher too, just a little. He had been a second father to him and had taught him so much.
Goten had started stacking up the pile of wood and he had put away the axe. Uub gasped as the demi-Saiyan rose into the air.
"You are leaving?" he asked, startled by the disappointment that was clearly in his voice. "Where are you going?"
"I'm late for work," he answered and flew off.
As much as Uub wanted to pursue him, he restrained himself, crossing his arms behind his back. He kept looking at the sky even after Goten had left. The strange sensations had returned. The ones that made him feel all light headed and funny. It was bizarre the way that his body reacted around Goten. He wondered what Goku would make of it.
His attention was focused now on the house. It was very quiet in there. Maybe Ms. Chichi had forgiven his teacher. Uub really hoped that she had. He wanted to be able to visit Goten whenever possible, whether he wanted him to or not. He had a feeling -a nagging premonition that they were destined to be friends, or maybe even more…
