A Wife Knows

“Vegeta’s awfully quiet today,” Bulma commented.

“How can you tell?” her father asked. “Vegeta’s always quiet.”

“I can tell,” she answered.

She found Vegeta staring out the window of their bedroom. Even before she could see his face, she knew the sad, contemplative look he would have.

“Done training already?” she asked.

He didn’t answer, but gave a long, deep sigh.

“You’d better hurry,” she said.

“For what?”   “You don’t want to keep Goku and Piccolo waiting too long. They’re liable to take their impatience out on you during the fight,” she said with a wink.

Vegeta’s eyes lit up with the excitement of impending battle, then faded as he gave his wife a quizzical look. “What fight?”

“Now, it’s just sparring,” she warned, shaking her finger under his nose. “I don’t want any of you going so hard that you need a Sensu bean. But just in case . . .” She held out a small, familiar bag.

Vegeta looked at her in surprise, trying to determine if she was joking. He took the offered bag and she opened the window for him. On the sill, he paused and gave her another questioning look.

Bulma smiled back and said, “A wife knows.”
