Hearts for Charity

“Remind me again why we’re doing this?” Gohan asked.  He rubbed his sore writing hand before reaching for another construction paper heart.

“Hearts for Charity is a great fundraiser,” Videl said, rolling tape loops and sticking chocolate hearts to the paper ones.  “We make money for a good cause, it’s cheaper for the students than buying boxes of Valentine candy and we get out of class for volunteering to put them together.”

Gohan sighed.  “But why does everyone send to their entire class?  I’ve written two thousand already!  I thought only guys got chocolate on Valentine’s Day.”

“Times change.”  Videl opened another bag of candy.  “Besides, do you want to do this all over again on White Day?”

“Not really,” he admitted.  They worked side by side in silence until the lists were nearly completed.

“Gohan.  You didn’t send any hearts.”

“Nope.”

“If it’s money, I could lend you“

“It’s not the money,” he said.  “I gave a donation, but didn’t want any hearts sent.”

“Oh.”  Videl sounded so disheartened, Gohan put down his pen and took her hand in his, looking deep into her eyes.

“I didn’t want to give my heart to everyone.  Only to someone very special.”
