Dragon Ball X

A Love Story

Chapter 2:

I ended up finishing that paper and passing the class, thanks to Aiko from the library. I didn't really see her after that. I returned the book, but she wasn't there. I was kind of hoping she would be. I did manage to make a spectacle of myself, showing up at the library with a dozen roses. Now the gossip mill around campus thinks I am dating someone. I don't even know her last name.

No one even knows who the blue haired girl from the library is. Of course all the people I asked are too busy paying attention to their own socialite lives and wouldn't think to think about a mere librarian.

But she had an ID. Which means she is a student here. I didn't bother to check the book for the return slip, as it would have had her last name in it.

Well, whatever she is doing now, has nothing to do with the library. She hasn't been there since. For a while, I was checking several times a day. While I had another paper due, I didn't have to go to the library that many times. The mystery of the elusive blue haired student was starting to get to me.

"Hey Zoe, when are you going to get a life and just date someone ?" My cousin Zane asked from across the table.

"For real dude. This shit about the librarian that doesn't exist is getting kind of old. It was bad enough when you were busy playing the permanent bachelor." My other cousin Zoel said around a mouthful of food.

"One, she does exist and two, I didn't ask either of your guys' opinions on the matter." I shot back hotly.

"Just the fact that you actually got pissed right now proves you are obsessed. You are pissed because you are used to getting anything you want, and you cant have her because she isnt real." Zane grinned. Zoel laughed carefully, trying not to choke on his food.

"I don't see you with a girlfriend yet Zane."

"But I have enough fuck buddies lying around to count as one. Therefore giving me the right to rag you dearest cousin of mine. You didn't even contest your obsession, so I am going to assume it is true."

"Since when did contesting your stupid assumptions ever get you to not think something false was true?" Zoel said with a raised eyebrow. I grinned at Zane.

"Since pigs learned out to fly out my ass. Don't you worry about it chubby."

"Dude, you are cruising for a fucking bruising. Don't make me kick your ass here in front of everyone." Zoel said warningly, waving his spork around Zane's head. Zane made a moue.

"Fat fuck." He said leaning forward so that his longish blood red bangs hung darkly over his twinkling blue eyes. A wide mischievous grin crawled across his face.

"Okay bitch, start running." Zoel said jumping up from his sitting position. Zoel was the tall one of our three man group. He was the direct grandchild of Gokou and looked a damn lot like him. He was the same stifling height of six foot six and had a slightly leaner build that made him look slightly less than a muscle bound hulk. His short spiky hair however, was almost comically bright green. Neon almost.

Zane hopped up and did the same. He was just a little taller than my person by an inch or so. But he was very lean in retrospect. His father was a little less adamant about his training than my mother and Zoel's father had been.

By the time Zane had reached the end of the food court, Zoel looked to me admonished. "What is the point of him running when he knows that I know the instant transmission?"

"Because he is retarded and thinks it is funny. I mean, all these kids who just overheard you are now giving you funny looks." I said with a grin.

It was true. Zoel began looking around, self-aware for the first time that he had been being watched. Zane picked up on how he was being watched for his grotesque eating habits and commented on it. Zane wasn't trying to hurt Zoel's feelings, his subtleness was just not coming across.

"Fuck. He was trying to warn me." Zoel said disgustedly, throwing down his spork.

"Yup." I said with a grin.

"All well. I am still going to kick his ass. Mainly because my ego is bruised and it will make me feel better."

I laughed. This was ever the case.

"Peace bro. I hope you find your mystery woman."

I sighed. "I hope so too."

I hated the snow, I thought as I stared out the library window on the upper level. That was a main reason why I hadn't left yet. It had been a couple months since the library incident and I was still coming here. Though I did manage to leave the roses at home these days. No matter what, the snow seemed to chill my bones, even if I powered up. My father said it was genetics, that the Saiya-jin were genetically tolerant of heat, but temperamental of the cold.

Here in North City, it snowed quite a bit. It was at least a foot high outside and I had left my booties at home. So unless I wanted to walk around in it, I would have to wait until it was dark enough to fly home.

I fiddled with the chain to my wallet. I wasn't really even doing work anymore. Just watching the snow flurries and listening to the heater vibrate. Most people, as I understood, didn't have the refined hearing that I do. Another gift of sorts I suppose. But that just meant my hearing was that much more sensitive. Yelling in my ear didn't take much. Same with my sense of sight and scent. A bright light that may not be much to ordinary people could blind me, along with someone's B.O.

"Hello."

Now I jumped, startled. I usually do not get sneaked up on, unless I am spacing out really, really bad. Which I admit I was. I turned around.

It was her. She did exist. I wasn't imagining it. My mouth gaped, but nothing came out.

She started to look uncomfortable. "Look, I can leave if you want me to."

"No!" I yelled, then flushed a little at my overreaction when her eyebrows raised in surprise. "No, have a seat." I said again softer.

She did so. She was wearing a white t-shirt with a black hoodie with form fitting jeans. Less matronly like her librarian outfit.

"I never did get a chance to thank you for the other day." I said with a smile.

She laughed. "The other day was several months ago."

"Was it? I never noticed." I lied, I had noticed each passing minute. She laughed again and smiled. She had beautiful eyes.

"I am here to ask for a return favor." Aiko said, with a smile still on her lips. I felt a bit apprehensive. Please don't ask for money, please don't let her be like that!

"Sure." I said, forcing the smile to remain as doubt began to claw at my chest like a wild animal.

"I want you to go to the Winter formal with me. I am only a sophomore, so I cannot attend without an upperclassmen."

My heart pounded in my chest. How did she know I was a senior? Pease don't let her be a stalker!

"Sure…" I said rather hesitantly. I had not meant to. Her smile faded and she adopted a puzzled look.

"What? Is there a problem?" She asked faintly. Was she thinking I had a girlfriend? No.. everyone knows that I don't.

"No, nothing like that. I was just wondering how you knew I was a senior."

"Everyone in your class who had checked out that book before you was a senior writing their thesis paper." She said with a smile. "Librarians know that kind of thing."

Oh.

"Oh, okay." I said, flushing, feeling rather foolishly. I curse my stupid father and his inability to keep the color of his cheeks from turning red and then passing that stupid trait to me.

Bulma claims he didn't get it from her.

Aiko smiled again and started to stand up. I watched her, wondering where she was going. My heard pounded. She took my hand, which was starting to feel sweaty. Her own hands were so much smaller than my own. She turned it so that it was palm up, using both hands, then pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket and putting in my hand.

"That is my number. Call me."

She lived in North City. The area code told me that much. I nodded to her and she left as quickly as she had come.

"Are you shitting me?" The admonished voice of Zoel asked on the other line, his pitch raising a few steps for emphasis. That usually only happened when he was protesting his innocence to his mother, who could be extremely scary when she was angry.

"Nope. I found her, and I am going to the Winter formal." I said feeling triumph.

"Wow. Two strange things in one day. Zoe finding his girl, and being interested in her at the same time, then going to a public and social function. Rock man."

"Ugh. Don't remind me of the last part. She told her friends, so naturally the school is in a state of utter and complete shock." I replied.

"Maybe you will be voted King."

"Don't say shit like that man. My Dad was a year my junior and he took Mom too the Winter formal to show her what it was like at dances. That was not pretty."

"That couldn't have been pretty." Zoel sounded like he was grimacing on the other line.

"It wasn't. Made Carrie look like she was just throwing a simple temper tantrum. My Dad ended up with a black eye."

"A Saiya-jin with a black eye. Not good."

"MmHmm."

"Zoe."

"Yeah?"

"This Aiko ain't like your Mom is she?"

"I am praying man. She already has the coloring down."

"I will pray for ya brother. Peace."

"Peace." I put the cell phone in my pocket and kicked back on the couch. I flipped through the channels because that Sponge Bob shit was really annoying.

Two pouting heads turned to face me. One looked a lot like a tiny Vegeta, the other a tiny Gokou. Both dressed after their namesakes. I guess their mother thought that was cute. "What?"

"We were watching that!" The two kids exclaimed. I sighed. I hated babysitting. While the two kids were amazingly well behaved for four year old half Saiya-jin, I knew that if I crossed them, I would pay. I put the channel back and made a mental note to charge Bra and Goten more.

Gokou Jr. hopped up from his seat on the floor and jumped up on the couch next to me while Vegeta Jr. did the same on the right. I regarded the pair of them with a neutral expression. "What now? I changed it back."

"Who were ya talking to?" Gokou Jr. piped up.

"Zoel." I answered.

"What did he want?" Vegeta Jr. asked.

"We were just talking."

"About what?" Gokou Jr. asked. It was almost cute how the twins traded off each other like they could reach each others mind. Of course, it wasn't cute with it turned out to be a double team effort against your person.

"None of your damn business. Go watch your kiddie shit." I snarled. I really should be nicer, but they are cousins, you can only be so nice to cousins. Especially obnoxious, bored four year old ones.

"I am telling Mom." Vegeta Jr. said in a huff.

"Tell your Mom. You know what happens then? Grandma ChiChi watches you from now on then."

The evil children looked at each other and contemplated this. They slid down so that their backs were against the couch and watched the T.V. rather sullenly. Zoerinthian knew how to handle them.

Kami, it will suck when they get older and that doesn't work anymore. I sighed mentally.

Gokou Jr. reached over and snatched the remote and changed the channel. I knew they weren't actually watching that shit. Cops flickered on for a moment and they grinned at me. I rolled my eyes. They loved anything that was violent. They were anticipating the day when Bra would allow her babies to train with their grandfathers. But so far she has laid down the law and said that only Goten can train them at the moment because Gokou, Vegeta and Alex would be too dangerous for her babies.

I was allowed to train them up to the point where Bra discovered I was merely running them around all day to tire them out so that they would nap then wake up when she got home and stay up all night. Instantly she forbid that. She wanted them damn near comatose when she got home.

She worked at Capsule Corporations too. She was the head of the board of directors. My father was the president and chief executive officer and I was acting chief financial officer until my degree came in. In a normal company, I wouldn't be able to do that because the board wouldn't have it. But of course, Bra as the head of directors had no problem with it as my aunt. Everyone on the board knew that the Briefs held monopoly, owning fifty one percent of the stock and not letting go of it to anyone.

Fifty one percent of stock was a big number, especially Capsule Corporation stock, the biggest company on the face of the earth. It had its fingers in every single pie you could think of. When Bulma ran it as president, Capsule Corporations made most of its money from its very first breakthrough invention, the pocket capsule and the capsule gun.

But when my father took over, he branched out and started brand names in practically everything from clothing, automotives, transportation and travel, to industrial and household appliances and medical and insurance services. He maintained the service quality for these things, so that everyone was satisfied, or their money back.

Yes, I was going to inherit a large sum of money some day. Working there may suck, but it was pretty good on the long run. If you could stand working with your relatives 24/7 anyways.

My phone jingle went off and I reached for my phone. As it came out and pressed the talk button, Vegeta Jr. snatched it. I let him talk on the phone and rolled my eyes again.

"Who is it?" He asked, giggling mischievously. Gokou Jr. Laughed as well.

It sounded like my father on the other line. He was being patient. Vegeta Jr. giggled more. "It is Zoerinthian! May I ask who is calling?"

I rolled my eyes again as Dad talked to him on the other line. Vegeta Jr. paled and handed me the phone. "Hello?"

"What happened?" Gokou Jr. asked.

"He said Mom was there too." Vegeta Jr. said.

"Zoerinthian, I need you to come with me to the dinner party tonight. The board of directors want to officially recognize you as the C.F.O." Trunks said. I could hear traffic through the phone meaning he was on the way home.

"Do I have to?"

"Yes. And bring a date. Important for appearances that you don't appear to be single. They like married men."

"But I am not married."

"If you show up with someone, they wont ask."

I grinned evilly. "How about a guy then?"

He paused on the other end. As if he was unsure of his own son's sexuality. How disappointing.

"To make it fair, if you bring a female date, I will convince your mother to go so that you don't suffer alone. Deal?"

"Deal. Did you grab a tux for me?"

"Yep. See you soon. I am coming up the drive now."

"Are you gay?" Trunks asked as he straightened his tie in front of a mirror. Mom was busy muttered dark things in the bathroom.

"No. But I bet you thought I was for a minute." I said yanking on the pants to the tuxedo my father had brought me before I paused at the lack of shirt. It was just a pair of pants and a jacket. "What shirt should I wear Dad?"

"You are a bit young yet for a shirt and tie look. I have a pale purple thing that your grandmother got me in the closet somewhere." I reached around him to get into the closet and grabbed the only purple thing hanging there. "I don't think your aging grandparents would take it well if you suddenly decided you were gay. No pressure though."

"This looks so gay." I muttered pulling it over my head. Trunks grinned at me and I could hear a chuckle from the bathroom. "And I am not by the way. I am probably straighter than you are."

More chuckling from the bathroom and Dad rolled his eyes.

"Who are you bringing then?"

I lost the smile and averted my gaze. "A girl from school. I am already going to the Winter formal with her."

The chuckling in the bathroom was replaced by more muttered. More intense and dark muttering.

"Well. Don't have too much fun alright?" Trunks said with a knowing grin. Only I didn't know what he was grinning about.

"Uh. Sure."

I finished pulling the sweater over my head and Trunks swooped over almost automatically to fix the collar. I grinned at him.

"You know I am twenty two right?"

"I like to pretend you are still a kid though." Trunks grinned back.

"Awh. Aren't we cute?" Mom laughed coming out of the bathroom, poking fun at the moment we were supposed to be having. Dad gave her a dirty look. Of course it only made her laugh more, causing my father to grin.

"We aren't the only cute ones here." Trunks said giving Mom a wink. Then Mom shot Dad a dirty look that matched the one he gave her. Then he laughed and she grinned. So lame, these two.

"Okay. Vomit." I said rolling my eyes. The pair of them smirked at me. "But you do look good Mom."

She smirked more, but said nothing. She wasn't used to dressing up, or receiving compliments about her clothing or looks. She usually looked like she just got out of bed and wore clothing fit for training. Not always clean either. She was wearing heels that put her at about our height. She was already tall for a woman at six foot even. But for a Saiya-jin she was short and painfully aware of it. Just as Vegeta was, being the same height.

Ah. The joys of explaining that the woman that could pass as a sister is really my mother. I tell people she just ages well when in reality she is only four years older than I am. Ah, the lifestyles of the genetically created. Popped out of a test tube, fully grown. Only a two decade gap between Mom and Dad.

"When is your girlfriend going to get here?" Mom asked.

"She isnt my girlfriend. She will be here any minute now."

"Fuck buddy?"

"MOM!" I exclaimed, flushing. Both parental types took notice and grinned at each other.

"Somebody in here had a crush on someone." Mom said tauntingly. "My little boy is growing up and has fallen for some Earthling." She sniffed midway through her sentence melodramatically.

"Speaking of Earthlings. Behave yourself tonight." Trunks said embracing Alex. She gave him a dirty look like he had told her to eat shit and die. But she nodded and gave him a kiss.

"What are you getting out of it anyways? If it is sex, don't answer."

"Trunks said that you were bringing some chick. I wanted to make sure she is good enough for my kid."

Lovely. I didn't even have a chance to warn Aiko yet. My heart dropped. My mother was going to freak her out, then I would never see her again.

"Go easy on her Alex. The boy hasn't had a chance to warn her properly and you know how Earthlings react to Saiya-jin." Trunks said shaking his finger. Alex looked at it like it was food. Like actual food. Trunks hastily stopped.

"Yeah. Yeah."
