CHAPTER SEVEN
Bulma swallowed loudly as she stood rooted to the spot. She was transfixed by Vegeta’s powerful gaze – as always! She could feel the blood thrumming through her veins, her heart pounding in her chest and her breasts heaving from her short and fast intakes of breath. Why did he affect her so? As he approached her, like a lion hunting a poor, helpless deer, Bulma lifted her chin defiantly and stared right back at him! She refused to cower at his stance. He stopped just short of reaching her and she hated the way her traitorous body reacted to him. It was like her senses were on overdrive! Every nerve ending was aware of his presence.
She closed her eyes to try and catch her breath. However it was the wrong thing to do! Oh God! Without her sight her other senses became more attuned to her surroundings. The deep breath she took in filled her being with that potent musk scent that was uniquely Vegeta. While Yamcha had bathed in cheap cologne everyday Vegeta was so naturally masculine that she could not help but shiver in his presence. His dominating aura overwhelmed her like a great wave consuming her in its fierce depth. But it was his strong heat that melted away all of her resistance she hopelessly tried to build up against him.
Vegeta watched as big blue eyes flew open to stare at him in hopeless desire and unwanted attraction. He almost felt sorry for her – almost! He could almost see the erotic images that were flirting with her mind, torturing her body into helpless desire and yet all he could do was stand rooted to the spot!
Stand and gaze at the enigma that was this woman as he let himself be drawn in by her full breasts as they heaved with her desire for him. Truth be told, he enjoyed watching her! The way her lips parted in silent invitation and her creamy cheeks flushed with her desire for him and her sweet scent become so palpable, he could almost taste her sweetness. This woman called out to him like the sirens at sea, she reached out to every primal instinct he possessed as no other had ever done so before! He could tell that she was having the same mind battle as he was and it pleased him to no end to know that she was just as affected by him as we was of her!
“Who were those people?” Bulma asked the second she had managed to regain her wandering thoughts. Although her voice sounded incredibly husky and she was still battling the urge to reach out and touch his muscular and toned body as he stood so close to her.
He didn’t answer her though and his lack of response started to irritate her. “He was a Saiyan, wasn’t he?” Bulma had noticed the male had had a tail curved protectively around his wait. A tail that she had become so accustomed to seeing on little Goku! And later on when she had seen the fury appendage on a baby Gohan and the other Saiyans, that Bulma could definitely spot a Saiyan tail when she saw one.
“Yes.” Was his simple reply and his eyes became veiled, shuttered and Bulma become more irritated as she knew he was hiding things from her.
Things that he didn't want to share with her. And Bulma told herself that all she felt for his attitude was anger at being kept in the dark and not hurt at his secretive behavior which excluded her from his world.
“Does Goku have any other long lost brothers?” It was a question she had to ask. The man resembled Goku so intensely that she had, for a brief moment, thought that it had been Goku standing before Vegeta. She was fortunate that her surprise and confusion had kept her rooted to the spot long enough to realize it wasn't Goku or she would have most likely launched herself at the Goku look alike! But when he had looked at her she had seen the differences in his dark skin and more intense gaze. And she had received more proof when the Goku look alike had looked at her with his assessing masculine gaze! Something that Goku would have never done in any way but friendly. And this man did not make her feel friendly!
“No.” ,came his reply, as if he had expected her to ask such a question. “Turles is not related to Kakarot.”
“Turles.” Bulma muttered the name unconsciously as she often did when committing facts to memory.
Vegeta did not like the way the other Saiyan’s name rolled off of Bulma’s tongue and a feeling of intense dissatisfaction passed through him. It was probably for that reason that he found his hand reaching up to caress her bare arm. He learned that her skin did feel as soft as the finest silk in the Universe. A thought that had plagued his mind for far too long now. That, and the fact that he didn’t want her to think of another man while he was standing right before her. She shivered and he smirked at her reaction!
Bulma struggled to try and keep her wits about her as she felt Vegeta’s had touch her. Yet she could no more stop the shiver that raced through her than she could keep the sun on Earth from rising each morning. It was done so skillfully, so softly, and yet his strong battle worn hands seemed not only to touch her arm but something else. Something very deep inside of her. It was as if his simple touch was rapping against the doors that held her unexplainable desire for this man at bay. Demanding she let him in so that he could light the match and set them both ablaze with her burning need for him! Shuddering at the intensity of her wicked thoughts Bulma took in a calming breath.
“And the woman?” She had seen a lot of women eyeing her jealously when she had been with Yamcha and she was not so naïve that she could not recognize the feminine look of warning and challenge. It was the “don’t mess with my man” look “or else …” that had Bulma questioning the woman’s connection to Vegeta. More so than the strange feeling she got that Vegeta’s two guests were there for a very big reason! One that she was determined to find out about.
“An old acquaintance.”, was his off handed reply. But there was something in the way he said it – something that made Bulma instinctively know that the woman she had seen earlier was more to him than an old acquaintance – that made Bulma feel irrationally insecure.
The woman had been beautiful in her own way. Although her features were exotically defined and her body generously curved she had not been petite or softly feminine and far from delicate! But she did have a poised strength about her that Bulma guessed appealed to some men. Men like Vegeta, who enjoyed bloody battles and respected formidable strength. Bulma felt strangely disappointed at this analysis of the other woman and Vegeta’s tastes as she knew she fell far from short of those requirements herself.
Rolling her eyes both at his explanation and at her own feelings Bulma continued to question him, "You must have known them pretty well. They were both wearing Frieza's armor." Bulma observed.
Knowing all too well the intelligent working of Bulma's mind and not wanting to answer any more of her prying questions Vegeta lightly ran his fingers down the valley between her breasts and her tummy, lingering low on her abdomen. He needed to distract her!
"Is that what you came here for woman? Is that what has got you so riled up?" Vegeta teased, enjoying the way she shuddered and her eyes widened in surprise.
Bulma felt her insides – and outsides – quiver at Vegeta’s intimate touch. The feel of his strong fingers on her clothed skin felt like a flame licking its way up an ice cube, melting its frozen solidity into a rippling puddle. She felt like she was melting. Looking into Vegeta's intimidating dark eyes Bulma reached deep inside her to find that life line of anger she needed to confront him!
"No Vegeta. This is why I came." Bulma spat as she quickly took a step back – so she was no longer susceptible to his expert touch – and held up the poster that she was crumpling in her hand, from holding onto it too tight, right in his face.
She was aware of the deadly silence that suddenly permeated the air and Bulma slowly lowered the poster. "Did you know?" She asked softly as she saw his eyes harden and his jaws stiffen.
"Not until a few moments ago." Vegeta said truthfully. For some reason he couldn't lie to her. Why? Gods help him if he knew.
"From your old acquaintances I take it." Bulma said smartly.
"Yes." Vegeta gritted out. She was too brilliant to lie to and yet he knew if he had really wanted to he could have spun her a web of lies. A web so catching Bulma would have become entangled it in its mastery.
But he found himself balking at the idea of patronizing her. For some strange reason she trusted him and he felt oddly reluctant to break that trust. Of course he was ultimately lying to her but that did not affect him. If anything, it allowed him to feel as if he still had some control over the situation – over her! However, if she did, would he have told her?
"Who is he?" Bulma couldn't help but ask, her question cutting through Vegeta’s thoughts.
"Frieza's father." Vegeta found himself replying.
Her flawless face crunched up in confusion. "But what does he want with you? And for a hefty some of credits too."
"He thinks I've killed Frieza."
"But you didn't!" Bulma immediately objected.
"Yes, but people here do not know that. No one except Radditz, Nappa and I knew about Kakarot. Later on all who found out about the existence of another Saiyan were killed on Namek. When the rumors started saying that a Saiyan killed Frieza people naturally assumed it was I who did so. Especially considering that I was on the Planet Namek when it happened."
"Why don’t you just tell them the truth then?" Bulma asked as if the solution were that simple. And it was, to her.
"That is none of your concern woman!" Vegeta barked at her. He had no intention of telling this woman, one who already seemed to ask so much of him – so much that he wasn't willing to give – of how his pride and jealousy had at first forbidden him to do so.
"But Vegeta, you can not take the blame for something you haven't done. Why would you do that?" It didn't make sense that Vegeta was protecting Goku, so why was he doing it?
"Who said I'm taking any blame for it? It simply suits my purposes." His answer intrigued her just as much as his smirk did. Although it should have looked evil and monstrous on Vegeta's sensual lips it only seemed deliciously attractive and spine tingling to Bulma.
"What purposes?" Bulma asked, trying to regain her focus.
"None of your damn business woman." Vegeta barked while he gave her one of his fiercest death glares. A glare that would have normally shrunken even the strongest of men into quivering messes – but not this woman! No, she had to challenge him at everything! She challenged him with her brain, with her smart comebacks to his every insult, with her inexplicable caring for him and most of all with her want for him and the way it all seemed to come together and affect him the most basic ways mortally possible!
"But you have been expecting it, haven't you?! That's why you insisted we keep moving." Bulma decided to change tactics.
"Are you suggesting I am running away?" Vegeta challenged.
"No. But you are helpless without your energy." Bulma reminded. She did however wish she could have bitten her tongue the moment she had spoken her mind. Once the words left Vegeta had turned his back on her and the tension could be seen coiled into his posture like a spring waiting to bounce. Not wanting to be on the receiving end of Vegeta's anger Bulma decided it was best to leave him be. However she had not even turned around when Vegeta turned back to look at her.
"Have you bought the part you required?" He asked her calmly although she could hear the undertone of controlled rage in his raspy voice.
"I did." Bulma gave him a tentative smile. She knew better than to push him for answers when he was like this. Not only would he ignore her but it would be a waste of her breath. Besides, she really hated when he was angry with her. Their normal battles of words she could handle for she never thought that Vegeta, like herself, took their exchanges personally. It was just a fact that they could not go long without getting on each others nerves! It was weird how she had grown so familiar with his presence when not too long ago she would have hid behind a rock just to avoid him.
"Good. So get to work. We don't have time to waste."
Irritated with his dismissal Bulma blurted, "Why didn't you tell me?" She told herself that it was stupid to feel hurt that Vegeta hadn't confided in her but he had told her that he had not had his suspicions confirmed before now. And he was not the type who discussed his thoughts with anyone. Least of all her.
"Why, so you could prepare escape plans if we were caught?" Vegeta mocked icily, not pretending not to know what she was referring too.
Angry that he thought so little of her Bulma felt the need to defend herself. "No jerk. So I could have prepared to protect us. I could have created invisibility shields to cloak our ship, put in energy resistance shields for if we were attacked. I could have created ammunition, put up faster ..."
"You still haven't finished reversing the energy draining process that you have dealt me." Vegeta reminded as he cut of Bulma's rambling. He wasn't in the least surprised that her brain or her hands could create such ammunition but he didn't want her to get sidetracked from her main task. With his energy they wouldn't need any technology to protect them. And Vegeta told her so.
"Oh please. One project is never enough to keep me fully occupied." Bulma shot back while bristling at his ignorance of her capabilities. So engrossed in the possibility of future creations Bulma did not think twice about her next words. "Besides, I've already upgraded the gravity machine and studied Saiyan DNA."
‘Oops!’ Too late did Bulma bite her tongue as she realized the words that had just left her mouth.
Immediately Vegeta was standing before her, his hands gripping into her arms like a vice grip.
"What did you just say?" Vegeta demanded.
"Oh nothing. You know how I can babble. Foolish woman." Bulma gave a nervous laugh as she tried to make light of the situation all the while trying to squirm from Vegeta's forceful hold.
"Do not lie to me woman." Vegeta warned. "Let's start with the first part of your babbling, shall we?! What do you mean upgraded the gravity machine?"
Sighing in exasperation Bulma decided it was best to answer him honestly. After all, she had already told him what she had done and the last thing she wanted to do was have Vegeta try to extract the information he wanted from her using another method. Like torture! Bulma's mind revolted at the thought though her body seemed to revel in it as dangerous images of her tied to her bed ... A strong shake from Vegeta was enough to bring Bulma back into focus with her intimate thoughts flying away from her like leaves in autumn. "Well daddy made it so that the machine could only increase the gravity to one hundred times its normalcy. I made it so that it could reach four hundred times normal gravity."
Unbelievable was the first word that came to Vegeta and he was grateful the he had not spoken aloud. Four hundred times normal gravity! He could have been four thousand times stronger now than he had been even after training in one hundred times normal gravity.
"Why haven't you told me?" He asked her in confusion.
"You can't use it yet at your ... current state. I didn't want to offend you." Bulma mumbled, trying hard to find the right words.
Vegeta could not detect an ounce of dishonesty in Bulma's words or her bold eyes and it instantly winded him like a powerful punch to the solar plexus. She cared so much about him that she didn't want to upset him with simple words. Immediately he let go of her as if she had burned him. He didn't want her to care about him. Her desire he could handle but her feelings were not something he wanted, at all!
There was something about this woman that made him want to unbury things he had hidden so deep that not even he knew existed anymore. Like a conscience thought long lost, or the need to be honest, or the want to trust and protect someone that wasn't himself and more disgustingly the want to give into those feelings! A pathetic, unnecessary and weak thought.
"Why have you been studying Saiyan DNA?" His question was very harsh – as he was angry with her for making him think in theses ways and more so at himself for entertaining such thoughts – and he saw her visibly flinch while she rubbed at her bare arms. It was unusually disconcerting to see her fair and soft skin start to bruise from his harsh touch. Frustrated with himself as he normally would have taken immense pleasure in bruising his enemy Vegeta tried to crush the thoughts from his mind. But that was the thing, wasn’t it? Bulma was not his enemy. Hadn't she already proved her loyalty to him? And that in itself was yet another thing that she made him think about. The fact that he had to stop treating everyone like his enemy!
"I've always been fascinated by Saiyans. I've known one since I was sixteen. But I could never get a blood sample from Goku as he has a phobia for needles."
"Idiot!" Vegeta muttered and Bulma didn't dare ask if he was referring to her or Goku for fear that Vegeta hadn't meant the latter. "But you must have had him battered and bruised often enough to have swiped some of his blood."
"True." Bulma replied with a small smile. "But after a battle the last thing on my mind was trying to steal some of his blood." Bulma explained. And wasn’t that the truth! She would either be too concerned about Goku’s well being to think about her own desires after a battle or too overjoyed that her friend had managed to save her world, yet again, to care! "I'm sorry Vegeta. I should have asked you first but I didn't think you would have said yes." Bulma spoke honestly. It was a temptation she could not risk when she had taken Vegeta's blood for testing to reverse the energy draining process.
Vegeta should have felt anger at her honest reply but all he felt was the ridiculous urge to smile! Something he never did. He could not understand how this woman – this weak Earth woman – could make him want to strangle her or kiss her or laugh at the ridiculous things she often said or did at the same time! How was it possible that a proud Saiyan Prince could be so entranced and baffled by a mere woman?
"Did you find anything interesting?" Vegeta asked indifferently but in all honesty he was anything but indifferent. He wanted to know what she had found, for if there were any secrets to a Saiyan, there was no doubt in his mind that this woman could reveal it!
"Nothing that we didn't already know." Bulma shrugged casually.
Vegeta could easily tell that her diplomatic answer was shielding the truth from him. He couldn't imagine a woman of her expertise not finding anything of interest in something that she was so intrigued by.
"Do not insult my intelligence woman." Vegeta warned in his deadly tone that gave the deceitful impression that he was not upset with the answers he received.
Bulma contemplated telling Vegeta the truth but she couldn't find the words to do so! She was still not one hundred percent certain about her findings and she knew how much this meant to him. If she were wrong he would most likely hate her for it. And she was not exaggerating on the matter, this meant more to him than anything in the Universe. No! She was safer keeping it to herself. But what if she could give him what he wanted and she willingly kept it from him? How much more would he hate her then? And if things worked out well, then what? Would he instantly forget all about her or would he be so grateful that he would review his opinion of her? Is that why she had worked so hard on her research? To gain Vegeta's approval? No! She denied. She was a scientist and it was in her blood to be so passionate about such powerful possibilities and potential.
Bulma shrugged trying to keep a cool facade. "I don't know how intelligent you think you are Vegeta but I assure you I am doing no such thing."
Vegeta could spot a lie a mile away. Especially from this woman, whose feelings could so easily be read on her expressive face, but he did not call her on it. He would just have to keep a closer eye on her from now on.
Stepping closer to her again Vegeta reached out to tuck a stray tendril of hair behind her ear. The gesture was so intimate that Bulma blinked uncertainly as if reassuring herself that Vegeta was actually doing it! And not some figment of her imagination that she had conjured up because she longed for his touch on her skin. But it was his face that was before hers, his fingers trailing down the side of her face and his dark eyes watching her intently.
"Get back to work woman." Vegeta's voice was serious but tinted with amusement.
"You don't have to keep doing this you know." Bulma tried to sound harsh and cold like he did sometimes but her voice came out low and breathy. Kami help her!
"Doing what exactly?" Vegeta questioned, truly baffled about what she was insinuating.
"Intimidating me like this. I promised to return your energy to you and I will." Bulma told him breathlessly, ashamed that she could not keep her body from reacting to him.
Surprised that she thought he was intimidating her Vegeta lowered his hand to lay on shoulder while his other hand mimicked its twin's action on her other shoulder. He didn’t know what he hoped to achieve by his action but he did it instinctively! There was some truth to her statement as he realized he was using her desire for him to intimidate her into doing his bidding, seducing her to keep her from challenging him. Because it was the only way he could win as she could not fight her desire for him! She challenged him so often that he found it the best way to keep her in her place. But there was also another reason he did. One she obviously had no idea about. His own desire for her. He wanted to touch her, to feel her and that was why he was doing it now!
His thumbs rubbing a sensuous pattern of circles on her skin concealed bones as he held her firmly in his grip. He looked at her and it was the first time he had done so without his walls up. His dark eyes glinted like lightning back rain clouds, as his eyes met hers, showing her all the burning desire she invoked in him!
Bulma gasped. For once she could see the real Vegeta. A Vegeta who was so scarred and hurt, so tormented by his past that he now survived on his own immoral and yet sometimes honorable code. The sight of his unveiled gaze was so intense that her gasp was shockingly audible in the quite of the ship.
But she also felt highly intoxicated from its magnetic intensity and she knew she wanted to get sucked in! And as Bulma stared at those ebony eyes she found herself moving closer towards Vegeta as if she really were been drawn in by his gaze. And so what if she was? Now was not the time to question it. All she wanted to do was feel! Her eyelids started to feel heavier and she was holding her breath in excited and nervous anticipation as her face lifted towards his. Even without being able to see she knew her lips were inches from his as she could feel his warm breath on her skin and her lips tingled in eager anticipation as they softly parted for his masculine invasion ... However the much wanted kiss eluded Bulma as she felt herself stumble forward.
Her big blue eyes shot open to see Vegeta standing at arms length from her but it was thanks to the firm hold that he had on her shoulders that had stopped her from falling flat on her face. Looking at his stern face and realizing that Vegeta hadn't kissed her made Bulma's cheeks burn with mortification. Embarrassment seeped through every pore of her being at the thought that he did not want to kiss her. However it was lucky for Bulma that she could still hold onto her pride. A pride that would most likely save her from a deadly humiliation!
Shaking his hands off of her shoulders Bulma glared harshly at him before turning to go!
Authors Note: Happy Valentine’s Day all! I thought it would be a good day to update a romance novel – although there wasn’t much action in this chapter – I hope you all liked it?
Back to the story … I feel so bad for Bulma, why didn’t Veggie-kun just kiss her and put her out of her misery? Knowing him, he probably has some dumb reason for not doing so – one we will find out about in the next chapter. Also, it looks like Bulma has been pretty busy recently! What had the genius been up to? And more importantly, what has she been keeping from Vegeta?
I think you should definitely keep reading to find out, but you should definitely look forward to reading chapter nine! Until then, happy reading!
