~~~~~~~~~~~~```` Chapter–This is Now
What I’ve seen and what I’ve been through has made me who I am
There was a time in my life where I had no desire to carry on
I couldn’t see a place for me or a will to survive
I never thought to rely on myself or the beliefs that I have denied
Hatebreed
Vegeta didn’t like what he was seeing. The ship’s system named Betsy could only take so much beating and she was reminding him of it almost every time their ship was hit. “What is it, dad?” Trunks asked walking up in his pajama pants, yawning widely but his eyes grew huge upon seeing the debris that decorated the vastness of space.
“Parts of planets.” Vegeta replied, sighing softly. This Gideon was sure doing hard work. He wondered how long this creature has been out here terrorizing all of space. How many races now were gone? For how long did the list of the deceased go on? A possessiveness grew inside him. He wanted now to seek revenge upon these murderers. What rights did they have to do this? Vegeta grit his teeth and fisted his hands, revenge would be upon Gideon soon enough. Then instead of being known for thirty years as a destroyer, the universe will be chanting his name out of respect.
It was four in the morning when the monitor blinked on and shined in her face. Bulma wakened with a gasp before finding his dark eyes and being able to calm herself enough to smile brightly at him. She got closer to it. “Vegeta.” She whispered just so she could hear his name fall from her lips. He gazed at her with no emotion but by the blackness that darkened his eyes, her smile slowly receded. “Some wounds don’t heal, Vegeta. Did you think they would forget it all?” She softly stated with sympathetic eyes. His eyes told her enough when he looked away. Bulma knew he wasn’t going to tell her what happened but from the looks of it, he wasn’t taking it very well.
“The boy saw it all.”
“Oh, baby, give him some time. He’s learning all this stuff about you. Some of it will be very hard to hear, but no matter what he will think no less of you.”
“He won’t think anything of me.”
“Vegeta, Trunks will love you no matter what. Do not pay any mind to what he says, okay. He doesn’t understand.” Bulma watched him for a few moments but that wasn’t a good idea with a skittish Sayian so she quickly changed the subject. “How’s space?”
Trunks watched his father silently, hiding in the shadows for the last five minutes. Vegeta probably knew he was there but paid no mind. Either way, Trunks stood there and observed him. Vegeta sat on the window seat, his legs brought into his chest and chin resting on the knees. An innocent and childish position that made the man seem so much younger and completely lost. The darkness stretched for miles, stars were bright but were still so far away. The large protective shield that surrounded them had finally been activated and the voice of Bulma was pleased nonetheless that her ship was not being plummeted anymore. But debris still hit and dissipated as they continued on their journey into deeper space.
Loneliness was a feeling that was familiar with only a thought of space and now it set in around them even if they were together. Space was definitely beautiful but Trunks would have given it up for one more sight of Earth’s sun sinking below the horizon. At least then there would be color.
Trunks didn’t know what to say to undo what he had done. He made judgements on something he knew nothing about. There had to be circumstances. There had to be reasons. His father would never rape any woman. Vegeta had even beaten the shit at him when he had raise his ki to Bra when he was eleven and she was just a baby. He found it repulsive and hated to hear anyone taking advantage of a less powerful being. But even though it happened a long time ago, at least twenty three years ago, it still happened. “Dad.”
Vegeta had known the boy was there, but he had hoped he would just walk away. The memoires of long ago were giving him enough punishment, he didn’t need the boy to make him feel even worse. “Do you think. I like my past, boy. Do you think I am proud of it?”
That question effected Trunks far more then he thought it would. “No.”
“I will not make excuses. I will not place blame on anyone but myself. But I will not let that define who I am now. I have changed. And I am no longer ashamed of who I am. That is why I came back to this. ” He was silent, and Trunks was thinking that it was up to him to continue the conversation but Vegeta’s cheeks clenched telling him he had more to say. “So you may judge--”
“No dad--”
“And you may grow to hate me. And you may think that I have not paid for all that I did when I was young; the mistakes that have followed me my whole life.” Vegeta eyes finally turned to face him. “But I have suffered.” He turned back to the darkness and when he spoke again anger laid etched into every word. “I do not need my son to make inaccurate accusations. If you have problems with what you have seen and what you will continue to see, then go cry to your mother.” Trunks wiping a tear from his eye quickly left.
Vegeta eyes followed after the boy. He hadn’t wanted to be so hard on Trunks. But anger was his best expression. Vegeta felt such awful guilt and to know that his own son would also blame him, was enough to make him crawl back inside of himself and stay away from emotion, except anger. The only emotion that was ever acceptable by his own father.
Bulma played spider solitaire on her laptop while Bra splashed in the pool with Jory who was being held protectively by Annika. Nesa sat next to her reading a magazine with Trunks’ picture on the front. “They are so stupid.” She laughed looking over to Bulma. “They made up some stupid story about you and Vegeta having a fallout and Trunks taking off to an uninhibited island because, and I quote, “Doctors at New York hospital have recently told us Miss Taylor Smith has had an abortion, and Mr. Briefs finding this out could not stand to lose another child. Everyone still remembers what Nesa Juno did by pretending that the baby she was having was his.’ Don’t they have anything else better to do?”
“You have to understand, Nesa, Trunks is a very important man, they won’t let this just go. I give it a week before accusations start going about how I chopped my husband and child up and tucked them under the floor boards.”
Nesa laughed and leaned back in her chair, throwing the magazine aside. “Where do you think they are?”
“Trunks just called about an hour before you came. Saying they were more then ten light years away.”
“How does the whole light year thing work?”
“It’s simple really. For every hour that they are away it’s three hours on Earth. It’s a lot of progress since the first theory on light year travel. For every light year they would travel, a hundred years passed on Earth. Now it takes three hours to travel one light year which means it takes nine hours here. They have been gone for 30 hours but for us it’s been four days.”
“So what you’re saying is, we are aging faster then they are by three days.”
“Yes.”
“I can’t believe I understood that.”
Needing a break from his son, Vegeta told Betsy to head to the nearest planet. And if he’s caculations were correct then they were going to be landing on Rahmeraton. It was known as a safe planet. He had learned about this planet when he had taken a year to train out in space. He stopped at Kino Desta and saw the flyer on a billboard. Apparently after the Cold family’s downfall, many soldiers could not return home by the fact that they had disgraced themselves. So to begin new lives, they came here. No murder was allowed, everything was done though the court system, if someone did something wrong that couldn’t be fixed by getting a fine, they were given a ship and some money and told never to return. And though the planet was filled with a bunch of murderers and rapists, no one did that here.
Vegeta didn’t like it, he actually hated it. Because, back in those days, even a safe planet would have gotten him many enemys. Not only that but he thought no one should be allowed to have a second chance. Now that he was older, he will admit that there were some soldiers like him, that regretted what they had done. A very small number but there nonetheless.
They landed without difficult and were greeted by a eight foot tall man that must of weighed a hundred pounds he was so skinny. “State name, and purpose, please.” Vegeta was afraid to reveal his idenity but he hadn’t changed in appearance enough to get away with a lie like that. The creature was startled by the name. And with all eight eyes wide with fear he forced out, “Follow me.”
Trunks was quiet and wouldn’t lift his head enough to enjoy the view around him. This planet was more gorgeous then even Earth. With two sinking suns opposite of each other, bursting the sky from both directions in pinks and purples, and vast lakes that intertwined between every city and was visible in everyone’s back yards. Houses in form of squares with a variety of color, no where was there any corison, it seemed brand new and a heaven.
The mansion that the docking bay attached too was made of light blue stone, almost a white, and black marble that led every pathway. Upon entering the huge building, Vegeta found the owner pacing back in forth in a small, comfortable welcome room.
With black stripes decorating his body and a white background, Trunks would regonize it as a tiger on his home world. But as far as Vegeta knew tigers couldn’t communicate through telepathic abilities. The creature known as a Vanasha, stalled to stare them down, his large tail was thrashing with nervousness. I am Zolo. What brings you here, Prince Vegeta?
I am in need of fuel.
Zolo looked to a man standing next to the door and nodded. He quickly ran out. Anything else?
Vegeta looked back at his son had turned to a window to glare out. And some entertainment for a shift or two.
We do not call them shifts anymore, Prince. They are called kelings now He began to pace again, never taking those big black eyes of his off of Vegeta. We banish anything the Cold family invented. And though I welcome you here. It is not wise to stay here.
I did not think anyone was allowed to be sent away. I have done no crime here.
Please, do not insult my intellgence. You come to bring up past memories that are better left forgotten. Many here wish revenge upon you. I do not want to interrupt my peaceful planet. Please, leave, before word gets to my people that you live.
Vegeta angered by being sent away wished for answers he never understood. Why do you keep them? Knowing what they are?
And what are they?
Filth.
And what are you?
You dare say such?
I am simply asking.
I am better.
Zolo now walked around Vegeta, making the Sayian on edge. You are better? Now? How about twenty years ago? All of them were forced into service. All them lost families. Lost their honor, and pride, just like you. And they have done horrid things that haunt them daily, and I dare say, just like you. So tell me, what makes you different? You’re the One? You were the one that destroyed Frieza and kin. So I guess that makes you king doesn’t? But that doesn’t mean you aren’t the same. It just means, you carry more burden. And more hatred. But you are no better.
Here I thought you hold no judgement.
I have no judgement. I just state facts. We will charge nothing for your fuel because we are thankful that Frieza and his kin are no longer in this unverise, but you must leave. No one here must know you are alive. Please, I beg of you, let them live in peace. They have a new life now, and they are free. Just like you.
Vegeta glared down this creature, hating it for saying the things that it did but then respected him at the same time. “Boy.” Vegeta barked before stalking out of the room. It had been a waste of time, Vegeta was hoping to learn from others about Gideon and what his prioties are. He needed to know how to beat them. But now it appeared hopeless.
By the time they got back to the ship it was restored and refueled. Immediately they took flight and Trunks made them something to eat. And as Vegeta was just about to shove his fork full of food a clattered happened in the back of the ship in one of the bedrooms. Vegeta silently told Trunks to stay still and slowly made his way to the back, rising his ki with a hand out before him ready to kill any assassin that might have stowed away.
Swinging himself into the doorway ready to fire, the figure stopped him. A vanasha stood, staring up at him. Prince Vegeta, I am Mischa. She lowered her body to the floor in a bow. I am given to you by Zolo. She sits down to get a better view up at him. Zolo apologizes for his discretion. But he was afraid someone would see you and report him.
Trunks entered the doorway and smiled upon seeing the beautiful creature just sitting there with her big black eyes. He reached at his hand which she smelt, and when she nudged his hand he fell to his knees before her and began to pet her gently on the face. “Dad, she’s beautiful but what is she doing here.”
“Boy, Stand up.”
It’s all right. She giggled, leaning into Trunks’ palm. He does not know I can communicate? Vegeta shook his head. Mischa looked at the boy, Hi. Trunks flew back on his butt and pulled himself away. Vegeta chuckled silently watching the boy’s wide blue eyes go to him and then back to her.
“You can speak?”
Only to your mind.
Trunks cheeks instantly went red, “Sorry about that...” He nervously stated about touching her.
It’s alright. I didn’t mind.
Why are you here Vegeta interrupted, though his responses were limited to only Mischa. Trunks had no control over what he saw during a telepathic conversation and Vegeta’s mental shields had been damaged after his last conversation with the invisible force that called himself Radditz. He hadn’t been able to reconstruct his walls. Mischa knew exactly where to tap into and what to keep shut. She wouldn’t read his thoughts, she would know better.
Mischa spoke now so both could hear her. We are prisoners. The new ruler of these parts, Gideon has decided to make all creatures pay for their crimes during Frieza and kin. It is strange though. Gideon was our alley and even protected us from many revengeful spirits. But only a keling ago he attacked us. We know not his motives, nor do we know what changed his mind. But they stationed a few of his men on the planet to keep an eye out because he imagined the people grouping together and rebelling. My people are innocent. And many were killed. She dropped her head for a silent prayer for those already gone. He however does show mercy. He only kills those that fought with Frieza. Their mates and children are being kept in a shelter until we can clean the bodies up.
Why didn’t he just tell me?
He needed you to get off the planet. You are very important to this battle.
How?
You’re the one. She stated as if it was the only truth she knew. You can defeat him, just like the others. We have been waiting for a savior to arise. And you show up. If that doesn’t prove it, I don’t know what else does.
Vegeta thought of what she was saying, and not sure if he liked it. He hadn’t planned on being caught in a war. He had been hoping, maybe, that space had fixed itself. He wanted only to come here and fix the past. But obviously he was stupid to think they would never again be a Frieza. Why didn’t he tell me? He hated repeating himself but the answer she had given him last time wasn’t acceptable.
As I said, he wanted you off the planet. If you would have killed Gideon’s watchers, then Gideon would know you are alive. Zolo believes a surprise would be better.
Vegeta looked to Trunks. It was obvious Trunks wasn’t understand all of this very well. He had his brows knit and tongue poking through his lips, just like Bulma. I do not kill anymore. I will only kill Gideon. If he proves to be incapable of being controlled.
I’ve heard many a tail about you, Prince Vegeta. And from those words only, you have changed beyond anyone’s expectations. I actually feared when I was appointed to this task. Now I am honored. I promise, on this voyage, I will look after you and your son. Vegeta’s eyes widened. He smells just like you. There is no denying it. He is something to be proud of.
No one must know.
I will keep my secret safe. She stood on all four legs and bowed.
Trunks looked on with furrowed brows, “This isn’t fair, I want to hear it too.” Vegeta turned out of the room. He looked at her and smile, “You hungry?”
